Chapter 1: A start
In this world, sadly, power is everything, and having a good Quirk sets you on your way. However, if you have a Mutation, or are a "Villain", or “Without” you face discrimination for something you never had a choice in. So, what would you do to get what you want? Is hard work enough? Or is one bad hand dealt at your start enough to ruin your chances forever? Let's find out.
A boy with wild green hair is working hard down at Takoba Municipal Beach Park. Determination blazing as all he’s ever wanted is dangled in front of him like an enticing carrot... But we are not directly following his story, not this time. Hiding behind a tree, watching from a good distance, is a 15-year-old girl with soft cyan hair that’s been cut short (not her choice). Her pink-hued eyes full of wonder, as a fire blazes inside her as well. A fellow student at Aldera Junior High and she is inspired by a boy who has it as bad as she does. She watched him struggle and rise to never give up and she wanted to do the same to be like the boy who never gave up, Midoriya Izuku. She wanted to talk to him, but she didn't want to disrupt his focus.
-Flash Back-
Kowareta Kintsugi, known by most as “Kin”, wanted to be a hero, one who could help and protect others. The broken-hearted Kin has not developed a Quirk, and by the age of 5, everyone had already started to give up on her ever getting one. It was at School where things started to go downhill for her. Bullies were quick to bring her down, and the taunting started with name calling and began to escalate as the weeks dragged on. They called her corrupt, worthless, tainted, or just picked on her for her Family name, “broken” was popular. As they became more emboldened, physical abuse started and so did the crueler mental attacks. So, she started to pull away and become reclusive, leaning into her studying and trying her best to keep a low profile, not wanting the negative attention making yourself visible gave. That all changed the next year she was put in a class with the boy with wild green hair.
The leader of the bullies of this class was Bakugo Katsuki. He had an amazing quirk, able to produce explosions, not that she really understood how it worked. The teachers went out of their way to praise him and even encouraged him, to bully those weaker or inferior to him, going as far as to out Kin as quirk-less. She hated the way his red eyes judged her. She hated him. Midoriya called him Kaachan, though she couldn't understand the affectionate admiration her fellow quirk-less boy held for him. When he wasn't directly pushing Midoriya around, he would turn his attention to her. Burning her hair with explosions and knocking her over in the halls.
"Stop being such an explosive Dick." She grumbled one of the times she saw him lash out at Midoriya. She didn't mean to say it out loud.
He blasted off at her, pushing her down and pulling her up by the hair. "What did you say to me, you Extra?" he said, his attention solely on her. She cried out looking up at him with fear in her eyes as he glared down at her, an explosion dancing across his palm as he lowers it to her face.
"Leave her alone Kaachan, why are you being so mean? You’re hurting her and making her cry!" The boy who’d been the target only moments ago pushed his way in between the two, standing up on shaky legs.
“Worthless Deku playing hero, I thought I taught you that you don't stand a chance without a quirk. Now get out of my way. Your little quirk-less girlfriend isn't getting away with insulting me." Bakugo practically barked out at him.
"A H-hero never turns th-their back on som-someone in nee-need!"The green haired boy stammered. Despite the tears flowing down his face, he stood up Bakugo looking him in the eyes. Bakugo growled, letting Kin drop to the floor as he turned his attention to Izuku. Bakugo slams him against a wall before turning away with a "tchh", an annoyed look on his face.
"Deku and Lil Gaichu here aren't worth my time." Bakugo stormed off, his yes men followers on his heels. The boy with the green hair looked down at her and offered his hand.
"I'm Midoriya Izuku, you can just call me Izuku." He said with a warm bright smile. It made her heart skip a beat as she took his hand, ignoring the warm feeling across her cheeks.
"Kowareta Kintsugi, please call me Kintsugi or just Kin." she says shyly. This moment cemented Izuku as a Hero to her and made her want to return to her dream to be a hero herself.
This moment had a big impact, Bakugo focused more of his physical actions at Izuku and mostly verbally attacked Kin. It also solidified the insults the rest of the students used. Everyone was already on board with calling Izuku “Deku”, but now Kin was “Gaichu”. In Bakugo's eyes, she was just a pest, after all, not even worthy of being a footnote in his story.
School wasn't the only place Kin suffered; with her family, it was a slow bleed out. They had been so supportive of her, but as the months passed and her quirk didn't manifest, they began to grow distant. Her parents began to fight frequently, a simple argument almost always coming to blows within a year of her being labeled quirk-less. By the time she had turned 8, her mother abandoned her completely, no love in her heart for the girl she left. Kin’s father said she’d shacked up with some loser in Hosu. Her dad tried his best to not let the strain show, but it was starting the decay of her last supportive relationship with her dad. Over the last few years, her father had started to become colder, more distant, and always ran off to any extra shift he could get to avoid the growing silence between them. It wasn't long before he began to drink and to flat out ignore her existence.
-Flash back end-
But now, here she is, 15 years old and watching a boy down at the beach. A boy working hard to accomplish his dream, and it made her feel like she could do it too. So, she pulled out her phone and took a picture of the boy who was her hero. She smiled and walked away, just missing her friend's instructor arriving. She had to keep up. If he could be a hero, so could she. She just had to keep moving forward.
