It’s obvious. Right on the nose. So plain it’s frustrating to know it hasn't happened yet. At least, that's how Oikawa and Iwaizumi feel – oblivious to each other’s shared feelings – after the abrupt end to their secret race to the best proposal. They should be one – one another’s – by now. They want to be and know it; Oikawa because he’s nosy, Iwaizumi because Oikawa is as subtle as a brick through a window. In the end, that’s very much the way Oikawa could propose, if Iwaizumi doesn’t get there first. Which is the entire problem. There’s a reason why they’re on Awaji Island instead of being six time zones apart like they usually are.
If someone asks Oikawa, it’s because he’s a mastermind and tricked Hanamaki two months ago into dropping the fact that Iwaizumi intends to propose by the end of the year. If Iwaizumi gets any say, it’s because Oikawa literally pointed out thirteen times (and counting) just over the past six weeks that same-sex marriage is legal in Argentina and Iwaizumi knows when to take a hint. Move fast and catch up to him, because in this race, neither of them can be left behind. It’s only natural that both of them would do everything in their power to take that extra step in their relationship.
They each just want to do it their way. In their own time and their own fashion. But it’s forgetting how alike they are when everything seems to want to break them apart, how single-minded they’ve remained since they were brought together as infants no matter the distance that ever came between them. Iwaizumi wants Oikawa to be happy and he always has. He’d like for this race to ‘the perfect proposal’ to be a little less of a challenge and a little more of a symbol of their love than he’ll ever admit. Oikawa has conquered a lot of goals, tackled many of his objectives, and he’s come to the conclusion that not many things in his life matter more than conquering Iwaizumi’s heart. It’s a serious matter that Oikawa wants to be intimate and tied into something that lasts forever. They’re simply too proud and attached to the theatrics of grand gestures and moments of their story to just let it simply happen simply. Neither wants to be a bystander to something so important and that’s precisely why, once again, they're playing dumb. Because they sure tricked themselves into a situation that could be much more simple than it is.
And they've never learned… otherwise they wouldn’t be sitting here, on the floor of their rented bedroom’s private veranda, bundled up in yukata while they watch the heavy rainfall directly into their private onsen bath instead of going through with romantic plans that were ruined step by step by life’s ups and downs.
The setting they ended up in instead – this perfectly romantic onsen – is pretty charming in and of itself, as Oikawa effusively pointed out (having organized that part of their week-long vacation). But after aiming for the moon, ending up stuck in a rented bedroom seems like a joke. It should have been a perfect spot to rest after a delayed flight. Another joke in of itself because Iwaizumi changed their tickets last minute so they could meet during their connection and share the last leg of their flight in business class. Arriving late meant their driver had been redirected to another customer and they had to line up for ages to find a taxi that would drive to the countryside and all the way to their magical spot. Now that they're reunited, it wouldn't have been much of an ordeal if the rain hadn’t joined the party too.
“Don’t worry, Iwa-chan. Of course, it's not gonna last,” Oikawa had commented with a petulant eyeroll, ducking into the vehicle.
“... the heavy rain that seems to be lingering over the Kansai region. An episode that could last for the next couple of weeks,” the forecast lady on the radio had conveniently answered.
They could have laughed then but it’s hard to as their respective plans seemingly take the same nightmarish path as the start of their stay does. How is Oikawa supposed to take Iwaizumi to the Nijigen no Mori themed park on Wednesday so he can ask him to marry him in Godzilla’s literal mouth if there’s a typhoon? And it’s not like Iwaizumi’s plan to propose tomorrow under a star-filled sky at an astronomical observatory is going to work much better with those looming heavy dark clouds. No, really, they’re the butt of the joke. Except no one is laughing. In fact, they’re not even in the mood to try and lighten the mood anymore.
Oikawa has been staring at the rain-distorted surface of the exterior bath for several long minutes, his hard gaze slowly turning into a scowl. Iwaizumi isn’t sitting far away, having abandoned sorting out their luggage for now, too engrossed in his own brooding thoughts. From an outside point of view, it’s actually ridiculous to witness. The intimacy, the privacy offered by the very setting they’re in, is peaking. Oikawa just has to lean back, hands gliding against the wooden floor to reach Iwaizumi’s ankle from where it’s peeking out from his yukata. Iwaizumi just has to get on his knees and scoot over to drape himself over his boyfriend’s back so they can stare into the lovely landscape taken over by the growing storm in the safety of their room. It could be as romantic and cinematic as any of the proposals they imagined if they weren't pouting like overgrown children, mourning over futilities. And speaking of futilities, they might as well think about baseless things like food.
“We should order dinner.”
“Oh, I thought we’d hunt for a good restaurant in this lovely weather,” Oikawa groans, without looking back at Iwaizumi.
“Very helpful, Shittykawa. But if you think you’re gonna ruin the ryokan's exquisite food with your attitude, you’re wrong.”
“That’s not my name,” Oikawa hisses, shoulders hunching.
Iwaizumi could change names, and bid farewell to any terrible puns, but that would be getting carried away since they can’t even get through with formalities. It’s insane just how much that gets on his nerves, when it shouldn’t be so dramatic.
Right on cue, the sky erupts in light. And because they’re not holding hands or cuddling, Oikawa nearly jumps out of his own skin, almost falling backward. He looks and acts like a fool, and he doesn’t need to be scared of thunder for it all to explode. The not so metaphorical drop of water that makes enacing only for a split second before it’s clear that he’s about to crumble and cry like a kid. He's clearly holding it together only because he knows that even by his standards, it would be over the top to lose it as the elements chaotically crash downthe glass overflow.
Oikawa's silhouette looks menacing, set off, when he looks over his shoulder to flash a deadly glare at Iwaizumi. Foolish and childish, he remains m outside.
Iwaizumi notices the shift instantly, because there’s not much that makes Oikawa tick that he can’t sense. It’s instinctive – because it’s been there all their lives – Iwaizumi could put aside literally anything on a moment’s notice to rush and make things better for Oikawa; to appease him. Pride has its limits and it’s the needs of the man he loves – at least, now that they’ve grown older and lived half their lives apart. Instantly, Oikawa finds himself in Iwaizumi’s arms and pride means nothing when it comes to the only person that really matters to him. That’s why he clings to the front of Iwaizumi’s yukata and presses his quivering lips to his like it’s a god-sent solution for all their problems. Kissing Iwaizumi often is; loving Iwaizumi always is. There’s a reason why they’re here and why Oikawa wants this moment to last forever.
“Hey, you’re fine. We’re fine,” Iwaizumi whispers against Oikawa’s cheek, his nose, before kissing him again, cupping his jaw between his hands.
“I know,” Oikawa can’t help the prickly tone, half ashamed of his behavior and still mad at the situation.
He knows so he kisses Iwaizumi even harder until sitting next to each other isn’t enough. It doesn’t matter if a hard wooden floor is beneath them; they’ve seen far worse today. They’ve survived anything and everything together, years of hardship as both opponents and partners. They can passionately embrace on the ground while the storm rages outside. In fact, now that they’re indulging, it is all very romantic. Not that they pay attention, finally absorbed in the moment.
Oikawa’s hand leaves the hem of Iwaizumi’s yukata to slide underneath the fabric, finding solid warmth to latch onto. It doesn’t take long to disrupt the steady heartbeat he finds there. A drag of teeth against Iwaizumi’s jaw when Oikawa shifts his body to entangle their legs and the man under him is as good as gone.
Oikawa knows he really is fine when Iwaizumi rolls them over, shrugging off his yukata entirely before he lunges to push Oikawa’s open as well. It falls around him with some difficulty, caught between them where Iwaizumi won’t stop pressing down onto him, seeking the contact they both desperately need. Iwaizumi is breathing a little harder than before, but Oikawa can only hear him over the rumbling outside because Iwaizumi nips at his earlobe, then peppers kisses along the side of his neck as he rummages somewhere above their heads. Oikawa doesn’t pay any mind to it, barely noticing that he's making it difficult for Iwaizumi with the way he can’t help but circles Iwaizumi's waist with his legs, holding him exactly where he wants him; where he needs him.
Oikawa only shifts his priorities when Iwaizumi starts to fight him a little to push himself up on his knees. When he settles back between Oikawa’s legs, the hand that was going through his suitcase is holding a familiar bottle.
“I thought we were ordering dinner,” Oikawa grits out, just for the sake of it.
“You’re gonna be a brat after I caught you freaking out because of the thunder?” Iwaizumi asks, arching an eyebrow.
It’s clear from the tension in his shoulders that he doesn’t want to waste time bantering; an eagerness Oikawa definitely shares.
“That’s not what happened,” he mumbles, averting his gaze.
Thunder rumbles outside at that instant, illuminating his features, outlining his pouting lips. Iwaizumi is on him again in the next second: “Then shut up and stop trying to ruin the moment. We’ve had enough of that today.”
Oikawa listens, or maybe the warm mouth pressed against his chest and sucking on his nipple renders him speechless. What’s certain is that Iwaizumi doesn’t have to ask for peace again. Oikawa naturally gives in.
They move fast, in a hurry, as if being frantic will help them exist amidst the chaos, or because their pent-up frustration reached its peak and there’s nothing left but to submit to it. They’re alone in a small warm world, never mind the cold that licks at their ankles and the deafening thunder that even covers Oikawa's strangled and high-pitched gasp when Iwaizumi presses a first finger inside of him.
He arches beautifully over the wooden floor, trapped against his lover’s chest, throwing his arms around Iwaizumi’s shoulders to anchor himself. Oikawa was so tense it should take twice the usual amount of time to prepare him but it’s like a fire has been lit inside him. He melts under Iwaizumi and Iwaizumi is relentless. He’s finally allowed to take and Oikawa is laid bare with nothing stopping him.
By the time Iwaizumi’s three fingers deep, Oikawa has ravished him equally. Without a ring, he'll leave a necklace of love bites on Iwaizumi’s neck.
“Need more,” Oikawa breathes out against his skin, trembling. “Need you. Get on with it, please.” He’s not far from whining.
Iwaizumi stills over him, although he can’t help but crook his fingers one last time before pulling them out, eliciting a sweet moan Oikawa fails to swallow. The rain outside is heavy, but when Iwaizumi sits on his heels and looks down, it doesn’t matter if he can’t hear him panting anymore. Oikawa’s chest rises and falls rapidly, his eyes burning with want as they track Iwaizumi’s lube-covered hand. Iwaizumi looks away, at Oikawa’s luggage on the opposite side of the room, until he’s forced to gaze back at his lover when two strong thighs squeeze his waist. It makes him swallow hard around the lump lodged in his throat. He's missed him terribly, but tonight Iwaizumi wants Oikawa, even more than when they reunited this morning. He wants him so he can make sure it doesn’t matter that he couldn’t ask if he wants to love him forever.
“I– Hajime . What are you waiting for?”
Oikawa cannot wait either. Iwaizumi snaps out of it.
“The condoms. They’re in your suitcase,” he explains, crawling on his hands and knees to look over their heads, and even if he wanted to move away, Oikawa prevents him from doing so.
The death-grip around Iwaizumi’s waist pulls him down, tearing a groan from him and a whine from Oikawa. He stops his fall by slamming a hand next to Oikawa’s head, millimeters before their teeth knock together. This close, he can barely see Oikawa’s glare without going cross-eyed.
“Just forget it,” Oikawa urges.
“You sure?”
There’s a beat and some deep rumbling sounds in the distance. It’s funny how they seem to signify more when Oikawa's looking up at him like that.
“Do you think I have anything better to do after this than taking a long ass shower and a bath?” The thunder erupts then, making Oikawa heave a short but aggravated sigh. “ See? I might soak for a week, so forget about the condoms and get on with it!”
And this time, Iwaizumi can’t help but grin – ever so slightly. It’s only a pull at the corner of his lips but Oikawa catches it, and it ignites the spark between them even more. He drags him down for a kiss, rolling his hips without any subtlety and Iwaizumi would never refuse him.
He makes a mess of re-applying lube, smearing a good amount on the fabric bunched under Oikawa’s waist. He thinks he’ll love seeing Oikawa prance around in one of Iwaizumi’s hoodies later when his yukata has been ruined just like he has. It’s a sight Iwaizumi has always loved and one Oikawa has always loved giving – stealing his clothes since they were teens. Because they owned each other long before they meant it seriously.
Iwaizumi slides home, carving a path for himself the same way Oikawa’s nails carve marks down his shoulder blades, inch by inch, until they’re one.
“God, finally,” Oikawa moans, head thrown back, mouth gaping.
Iwaizumi’s hand finds the small of his back, holding Oikawa close as he takes a moment to ground himself. They both need it, if only so they can breathe again.
“You just had to ask,” Iwaizumi lets slip before he can stop himself.
It’s not what he means, but the choice of word, tonight, is everything. They just have to ask. They always give in to each other. They just have to…
“Really, now?” Oikawa taunts, voice strained. “Then do it. Like you mean it.”
And it’s not clear what he’s asking for but Iwaizumi is willing to give him everything he’s got. He means it when he starts thrusting as deep as he can reach. He means it when he grabs Oikawa’s wrists and pins them above his head. Just like Oikawa means it when he rocks against Iwaizumi, sucking on his tongue and biting Iwaizumi’s lips until they’re raw.
It’s pouring outside, but all they can hear is the sound of their harsh breathing and thrumming heartbeat. All they hear is the whisper of a name, a moaned term of endearment, a curse when it hits just right, a sob when they feel like nothing will ever be able to bring them closer. It’s all they need after all: each other. To be together, like they mean it.
Iwaizumi buries his face in the crook of Oikawa’s neck when he feels like he’s getting close, the rhythm of his thrusts growing erratic. Oikawa can’t remember why he was so upset when he feels so good. He’s only complete when he’s with Iwaizumi. They don't need anything else. They just need to mean it.
Maybe that’s why it slips out as unprompted as the sex. Iwaizumi can’t help and blurts it out when he tries to look back at his lover one last time before he climaxes and Oikawa hears a: “Marry me, Tooru.”
Words he’s longed to hear as much as say and that’s probably why Oikawa can’t refrain from telling Iwaizumi the bluntest truth at the exact same time: “I want to spend my life with you.”
Oikawa immediately chokes on the next word, be it a curse or Iwaizumi’s name before their mouths crash together and Iwaizumi trips over the edge, taking Oikawa with him.
They mean it. Always perfectly aligned, no matter where they are, and it's why they’ve reunited. It’s only then that they realize that was always going to be the case. Or at least… After they come down from the sudden high, pleasure taking over their senses and turning their reeling minds blank.
Somewhere in the background, the pitter patter of the rain can be heard past the cotton in their ears, once the buzzing of the white noise from their orgasms recedes. It takes time, and even more so because the storm seems to have faded. There’s a kind of peace to it, now that they're lying on the ground in a heap of sweaty limbs mercilessly cooling in the too-fresh air of the open room.
It’s what prompts them to move quickly – and without a word – to the bathroom to clean up so they don't catch a cold. They might have just saved their holiday, so it would be a shame to risk it again. They just don’t discuss it yet, because it’s late and Iwaizumi rightfully notices they won’t have anything to eat if they miss their last chance to order before room service stops. And because Oikawa does need to soak and have an internal meltdown by himself – which Iwaizumi immediately picks up on.
It’s only later, when Oikawa joins him again, in fresh clothes stolen in Iwaizumi’s suitcase, dropping down next to him on the veranda, that he feels light enough to banter a bit. After all, the night has started clearing up – for good, it seems.
“I hope you meant what you said,” Oikawa mumbles, eerily quiet rather than petulant.
Iwaizumi smiles, not ashamed of his blush. He’s been waiting for that conversation. Rather than give an answer right away, he pushes some sushi toward Oikawa’s face with his chopsticks while he looks up at the sky, certain he can see a star peeking out from between two clouds. Tomorrow, they’ll see plenty. He’s sure of it.
He turns to look at Oikawa then and they both know how much they meant it. It doesn’t hurt to say or hear it, though.
“I did. You?”
Oikawa’s face flushes, as if he hasn't been ready to answer since they parted before their shower.
“I never say insincere shit. You should know that.”
Iwaizumi scoffs. Oikawa bites off the piece of food at the end of his chopsticks with a warning scowl.
“Right. Trustykawa is what I’m gonna call you now.”
“Fuck, no!”
This time rather than scoffing, Iwaizumi barks out a laugh. Oikawa flops against him, pretending he wants to fight just so he can snuggle against his lover.
“Then drop it for tonight and eat,” Iwaizumi orders as he looks up. More stars are starting to shine their way out from between the clouds, and he holds Oikawa closer, lips brushing his temple. “If you trust me, you’ll see whether I meant it soon enough.”
As if they don’t both already know.
