Chapter 1: capable of love

Chapter Text

the strenuous nights of her life she would spend out with her friends, either to have fun or distract her from her own problems. she’d rather endure some weird party, even if she wasn’t necessarily the type. she would most likely be in solitude in her own dingy room smoking her cigarettes if it wasn’t for them.

jeongyeon was out with her friends at the club, they were getting totally wasted. her vision was a bit blurred, but all was well. she rubbed her eyes from underneath the thin black glasses, her eyes adjusted to the scenery.

“cmon! spin the bottle.” chaeyoung, her best friend; all the way through highschool and college, was taunting her. her lips were making little kiss noises, which she rolled her eyes at in response.

she made a little hm noise out of frustration and embarrassment, her knuckles knocked on the dark brown wood of the table. she sighed before speaking up, “‘m not doing that.” the cigarette in her hand was practically filling the whole area with smoke as she lifted her hand.

“at least one. just one. try it jeong.” jihyo, her other best friend, formed a smile at her.

“okay fine.” jeongyeon put down the cigarette, and took the bottle in her hand. she knew this was bullshit, she hated things like this but whatever. she let go of the bottle, letting it spin.

her other friend’s eyes followed the bottle like it was a dog’s treat. one by one, they all stared from her and to where it landed.

and it landed on, no other than—tzuyu.

her gaze met hers, and she felt like she was about to take the nearest object and hit herself with it. maybe she’d just pretend to lay dead or something, fucking shit.

she was fucked.

the girls all oooooohed and ahhed; but all the two could think was what the fuck.

jeongyeon made a gesture with her hands to come outside of the club, which tzuyu followed.

“i wasn’t expecting you….” tzuyu’s breath lingered in the cold air. jeongyeon couldn’t help but look at her, and stare at the ground. rinse and repeat that cycle again.

she wasn’t very.. used to the whole relationship thing, even though she’s polyamorous. she had just not met the people—or would she ever? but did that matter?

“me either.” jeongyeon intensely played with the zipper of her jacket, she had to have something to calm her. her legs shaking wasn’t enough to comfort her.

tzuyu gripped onto her fingers, “do you wanna? it’s totally fine if not.” she made a reassuring face.

jeongyeon clearly didn’t want to, which is what she said to herself. maybe she did, but that’d be weird. fucking hell—her mind thought.

“well look, i’m not opposed to it. but at the same time—“ jeongyeon took the cigarette from earlier, using a lighter, before putting it to her mouth.

“but?” tzuyu questioned her, she felt some sort of whirl in her stomach. so she wasn’t against it but.. what?

“i just can’t like right now. you know?” she pulled the cigarette out of her mouth, smoke coming out.

tzuyu nodded in agreement, before taking a few steps away to let the other smoke without getting it in her face.

“hm? oh.” jeongyeon took the cigarette out of her hands and dropped it into the snow. she felt like she shouldn’t have been smoking in front of her in the first place.

regardless, tzuyu felt bad. “i didn’t mean for you to uh..” her face was hiding away from the girl—averting all her attention to the ground.

jeongyeon knew she was really shy, sort of like her in a way. introverted, not very social. all that sort of stuff.

“you know… you and i are alike.” jeongyeon came closer to the girl, her height being only a few inches shorter than hers.

“you were an art major, you’re tall.. well i’m taller than youhmmm… you’re not capable of socially interacting with people…” tzuyu listed the similarities on the top of her head, they had been in the same art department after all. they saw each other time to time, they were best friends.

“‘m not even that shorter than you, tzu.” jeongyeon accidentally let the nickname come out, which she only called tzuyu in highschool. her, chaeyoung and tzuyu were inseparable, but as they went to college; they drifted. classic same old stuff, jeongyeon knew it was bound to happen any moment. she was used to losing friends, it wasn’t a whole new thing for her.

nonetheless, tzuyu felt her cheeks started to flush, realizing she used the nickname.

“you know… me, you and chaeng should get together sometime.” tzuyu looked at the now second cigarette jeongyeon put in her mouth, tzuyu was used to it.

“mhm.” jeongyeon held the cigarette with her index finger before letting it out of her mouth.

the door creaked, it was none other than chaeyoung. speak of the fucking devil.

“you two done here?” she let her back lay against the brick walk right next to the other two.

chaeyoung took the cigarette out of jeongyeon’s hand,

“hey!”

“oh lord just give it to me! cmon.”

jeongyeon made a pouty face, chaeyoung was pulling on the cigarette. she groaned, but let her have the cigarette in defeat.

“atta girl.” chaeyoung smirked, her dimple on her face clearly showing.

tzuyu poked at it, laughing as it came up and went down, and again. chaeyoung felt embarrassed, her cheeks going red—heartbeat racing.

jeongyeon played with the opening of the cigarette box, waiting to go home. she would probably rot, and do nothing. typical of her, but that’s more fun than partying.

“it’s late, are you guys going home?” chaeyoung practically read jeongyeon’s mind, well sort of.

“yeah, i was just about to go like now.” jeongyeon shoved her hands in her pocket, staring at the ground.

“i… could.. drive you guys home?” chaeyoung said all sing songy, she grinned; her cat-like eyes smiled too. her hands brought out the keys to her car, jingling them.

tzuyu nodded in agreement, jeongyeon gave a thumbs up. they headed to the car, which wasn’t a long walk at least.

“we’re going to your house?” jeongyeon walked alongside tzuyu, who was about to fall asleep.

“yup.” chaeyoung put the keys in the car, emphasizing the ‘p’ and dragging it out for a bit.

she looked at the two in the mirror, jeongyeon was lending her shoulder for tzuyu to lay on.

just like old times, she thought.

she started to take the route to her house, not really trying to talk to the two. she wanted to let them rest, they seemed tired.

her legs shook, out of anxiety. she knew it’d be fine, they’re friends. it’s been a bit though, sort of. they really didn’t have much time to be with each other as they used to, which contributed to the racing mind of hers.

she cleared her mind as she parked into the driveway of her house, checking on her friends which were in fact asleep.

chaeyoung sighed, before she opened the doors which promptly made jeongyeon wake up.

“hm?” jeongyeon blinked her eyes a couple times, before realizing they were already at her house.

“tzu… tzu…..” she whispered into the girls ear, she was right on her shoulder—deep asleep.

tzuyu groaned in her sleep, while chaeyoung helped jeongyeon carry the girl inside.

“hgh…..” tzuyu muttered, she was placed onto the couch of the living room.

jeongyeon and chaeyoung were saying her name like a mantra, which she finally woke up to, before making sense of her surroundings.

“chaengiee…. jeong…” tzuyu slurred, before she laid down back on the couch.

“did she drink?” jeongyeon put her palm over face, she was about to kill son chaeyoung. not literally, but almost.

chaeyoung tried to explain, “a bit… sort of.” she whispered. oh, she was dead, cause of death? yoo jeongyeon.

“you fucking—“ jeongyeon slapped her back lightly, she didn’t want to hurt the girl.

chaeyoung winced, before quickly apologizing.

“sorry…” chaeyoung sat down on the couch next to the wasted girl.

“i’ll take your word for it.” jeongyeon rolled her eyes, before getting out her lighter and a cigarette.

“give me one…” chaeyoung quickly tried to take the cigarette away from her, causing them to fight over it.

jeongyeon’s fingers kept its grip on it, while chaeyoung tried to take it out of her hand.
they were fighting like a cat and a dog, jeongyeon being the dog, chaeyoung being the cat.

tzuyu slowly opened her eyes, met with a weird scene. she stared at silence in the two before they stopped because of her.

“sorry…” jeongyeon scratched her the back of her neck, nudging chaeyoung to apologize as well.

“uhh.. sorry tzu.” chaeyoung stuttered, her mind hoping to god that tzuyu wouldn’t get mad.

“hmm… whatever.” tzuyu smiled, before laying back down.

jeongyeon went to go get a glass of water for her and a pill for her hangover, chaeyoung helped her.

amidst jeongyeon preparing the glass, she asked, “just how much did she drink…” her eyes pierced into chaeyoung’s.

“a lot. maybe. dude i don’t fucking know, i was with dahyun the whole time.” chaeyoung helped find the pill, before turning back to her.

“ughh….” jeongyeon groaned, before she set down the glass and the pill in front of tzuyu on the coffee table.

chaeyoung walked towards the stairs, “i’m going to sleep… you can sleep in my room or down here. i don’t really care just get some rest please, jeong.” she turned back to glance at her before slowly going up the stairs to her room.

jeongyeon decided to follow her into her room, why not? she made sure tzuyu had a blanket, putting one over her. she then turned the lights off, the only light in the room left was the screen of tzuyu’s phone.

jeongyeon headed up to chaeyoung’s room, it felt weird being here again.

jeongyeon peeked behind her bedroom door, “could i sleep here..?” before slowly entering the room she used to always be in.

chaeyoung nodded, before gesturing her to close the door. her fingers made a little “come here” signal after she turned off the lights and closed the door.

chaeyoung looked up at the ceiling, putting the blankets right over her. “you know it’s like old times..” she turned to look at her friend, seeing her brown & blonde streaked hair being basked by the dark night.

jeongyeon turned to the other side, they could talk about this in the morning. she pulled the covers and blankets over herself, before finally whispering to her.

“goodnight, chaeyoung.”

“goodnight, jeongyeon.”

jeongyeon couldn’t sleep, but chaeyoung could. chaeyoung probably wasn’t as wasted, but jeongyeon was a insomniac—so she’d rather stare and contemplate about her thoughts, or things that happened to her, usually the bad stuff.

she shooed the thoughts away as she noticed the clock saying 2 am. not like she’d sleep soundly anyway, her dreams were weird as shit. she looked at chaeyoung—who was already asleep. jeongyeon decided to close her eyes, finally. she let her thoughts go away, and rested.
