Warm sunlight flooded the nursery, waking Dewkit out of her sleep. She squinted her eyes against it, and rolled onto her side, attempting to go back to sleep. "What do you see dear?" she heard her mother, Skyfall ask. "Everything is fuzzy!" her brother, Cloudkit mewed in response. He must be opening his eyes finally. Cloudkit was a bit of a late bloomer, as his sister had opened hers days ago. Dewkit turned to look at the grey ball of fur that was her brother. He looked confused. "Give yourself a moment dear, close your eyes and then open them again." Skyfall advised him. Cloudkit tilted his head but nodded towards the fluffy mass of grey and white fur that was his mother, and did what she said. He closed his eyes for a long while and then reopened them. "Nothing looks any different mama!" he cried. Now, Skyfall felt a bit nervous. She looked around and picked up a leaf that was laying next to her nest. Holding it in front of him, she asked, "What does this look like?" Cloudkit stared hard but all he saw was a small green blob. "Green...and round-ish." He pouted. "It's a leaf mouse-brain." Dewkit chuckled. Cloudkit glared at her, "I'm not a mouse-brain!" he shot back, puffing up his fur. "Stop arguing!" their mother nagged. Dewkit rolled her eyes, but did as she was told. Cloudkit looked down sadly,"Why don't I get to see things like you guys!?" He whined at his mother. "I-I don't know." she responded quietly. Another queen, Redfeather, spoke up, "Maybe you should take him to see Frostheart, both of mine could see fine immediately." Skyfall nodded in agreement and picked Cloudkit up by the scruff, ignoring his protests. "Can I come too?" Dewkit asked before her mother turned to exit. "No dear, just stay here with Redfeather, we won't be gone too long." The grey and white she-kit let out a short whine. She'd never seen anymore of the camp than what was around the nursery and she wanted to come. Skyfall nervously made her way to the medicine cat's den. On the way she saw Redfeather's kits, Deerkit and Firekit playing. Firekit saw them and exclaimed,"Hey Skyfall, where are you going?" Skyfall slowed to a stop and told them a quick explanation of where she was headed. Firekit and Deerkit watched her with looks of wonder and confusion as she continued on her way. Cloudkit let out an annoyed grumble. He wanted to go play with the other kits instead of going to the dumb medicine cat. Skyfall stopped at the entrance of Frostheart's den. The sleek, white she-cat was organizing her herbs when Skyfall entered. She sat Cloudkit down as Frostheart walked towards her. "What's wrong, Skyfall?" She sat, looking down at the kit. "Cloudkit finally opened his eyes, and he says everything he sees looks blurry. Dewkit didn't seem to have that problem." she worriedly explained to the smaller she-cat. "Let me take a closer look at him." Frostheart said. She inspected the young tom's eyes carefully and noticed that his blue eyes seemed to look a bit glazed over. Then she began showing him different objects in her den and asking him different questions about how they looked to him. "Well Skyfall, unfortunately it seems like he's partially blind, he can still see basic shapes and colors but it looks more blurry to him than to most." The medicine cat told the tom's mother once she finished her tests. Skyfall glanced down at her kit with a sad expression and nodded. "Will he still be able to do the normal things everyone else does as they grow older, like be a warrior, go on patrols, and hunt?" she questioned. "I want to be a brave warrior!" Cloudkit exclaimed from where he sat. "Well the good news is I do expect his vision to improve a bit once he's older, so he should be able to do all those things, he just might have a bit of trouble since he doesn't exactly see the same way as everyone else." Frostheart insisted. "Perhaps he would do better as a medicine cat, I could use an apprentice." she added as Skyfall picked up her kit. Cloudkit vigorously shook his head. "I wanna be a warrior and protect my clan!" he squeaked. Frostheart smiled at the small gray kit. Skyfall gave her thanks, then went back to the nursery. Redfeather greeted the gray and white she-cat when she came back in. Dewkit was back asleep, so Skyfall laid Cloudkit next to her and told him to get some more sleep as well. "Why do I have to be different? I don't want to be different." He mumbled before curling into his sister's side. Skyfall gave him a pitiful look. "You're perfect the way you are" she soothed. The kit sighed deeply and closed his eyes to sleep. That wasn't exactly what he wanted to hear...
