Chapter Text
His leg idly bounced in place. The flat beige wall contrasting the cool white roof and basic room decor of the small office, nothing here was entertaining to look at. No fun colours or exciting furniture that screamed the setting he was used too. A fun adventurous setting filled with laughter, cheering and action.
Not closed in white rooms, fake plants and boring outdated magazines.
Mostly outdated. Making a point to flip over the most recent newspaper on the Therapists desk as he walked in, ‘Möbius dream couple, trouble in paradise?!’ Splayed in bold across the page with sneaky photos taken of the hedgehog himself being a bit too frisky at a club with a certain other. A few other pictures displayed Amy huddled against Rouge crying at a cafe while Rouge shielded her with a wing.
From there it seemed to go down hill so quick.
He idly scratched at his forearm, ears flicking back as he examined the room for the hundredth time in the hour. His usually overactive body itching to run and jump into action. A flat palm ran across his face as he breathed heavily, the voices a distant mumble in his hearing as he gazed over at the clock on the table surrounded by multiple fidgety items Amy insisted on for Sonic.
Twenty minutes left.
"And you, Sonic? How do you feel about that?"
Emerald eyes flicked up to the grey cat. The cat simply crossed a leg over as he readjusted the clipboard in his lap before taking his glasses off to clean the lenses with the corner of his shirt subtly. "Let me rephrase, when Amy expresses her desires for you to-", the cat glanced up, eyeing the hedgehog pointedly up and down before returning to admiring his glasses, "slow down, how does that make you feel?" He asked calmly.
Sonic sat silently.
The fuck did Amy say before?
He glanced over at the pink hedgehog and instantly regretted it, seeing the tears welling in her eyes as she side eyed him with a trembling lip. Her arms suddenly folded over her chest tightly as she turned further away from him. He only just noticed the ring on her finger had been missing.
Why had he agreed to this?
"Sonic?" The cat asked softly.
"There’s no point, he won’t listen" she grumbled. "He never does".
His fur stood from the chills, hearing her speak with such a frustrated tone. He heard it so often now, all the time at home, at HQ, even out with friends- and Gaia forbid he stood around ‘him’ for too long else that tone would’ve been a lot louder and angrier. She wasn’t the same Amy he remembered, when they were younger and having action filled adventures nearly every day. He wasn’t that much older and definitely not slower. Just more ‘mature’ as she’d put it.
She wasn’t the Amy was laughed loudly and lead teams with a golden heart and iron fist. She was the Amy who yelled at him for coming home late, for getting injured by accident… the Amy that scolded him for ‘under performing’…
He wished he said no.
Egg man’s death was celebrated so suddenly, his final defeat, their final struggle with everything. He was so excited and pumped, freedom finally being found and everyone’s excitement and joy giving him such a boost of happiness he hadn’t registered what Amy asked at all. Thinking she was simply confirming Eggmans death he cheered ‘yes’ with tears in his eyes.
Then she fell to one knee and pulled her locket on her necklace forward, then opened it to reveal two rings. Light pink and colbat blue.
His frown deepened further at the memory, eyes falling to the carpet as he idly dug the tip of his shoe into the solid fabric.
"Like talking to a brick wall"
He heard Amy scoff before suddenly standing.
Another failed attempt at fixing them. Fixing something that wasn’t meant to be.
He should’ve said no. With all the excitement turning to shock he remembered just going along with it, seeing how happy it made everyone around them. Time had quite literally flown by, from the ceremony to the moving in, to Amy’s insistence on a child together. He never treated her different than he had before.
And she visibly hated it. No PDA, No morning or goodnight kisses, hell he hardly held her hand in public or texted her differently than he had before. "I love you" was met with a sheepish smile and her attempts at getting him ‘going’ were nearly always a fail. The nights progressively became more and more quiet, less talking and less physical touch.
Why did he kind of prefer it that way?
"Get up, we might as well go home. He won’t talk, than-"
"May I speak to him alone, I’d like to see if he would become more comfortable in a one on one setting" the cat asked as he stood, straightening his coat out as they both made their way to the door, Sonic still sitting idly in the chair.
"Sure, you can try but he will just give you yes or no responses" Amy gave a cold glare before heading out, making a show of pulling her phone out and dialling a number- more than likely Rouge.
He could hear her complaints through the thin walls.
The cat looked even less impressed than before, sitting back in the plush chair with a soft sigh as he leaned forward, elbows resting against his knees as he scratched under his chin before glancing up at Sonic. Making note of the hedgehog eyeing the flipped over newspaper.
"I’ll make note to never let the secretary set up the office again, the newspaper was a bit of an eye sore" he leaned forward and removed the paper, simply rolling it and tossing it to the bin before leaning back in the chair with a sigh. "I do have a few questions however, feel free to not answer. I just don’t believe the outcome would be ideal if I asked with Amy in the room"
With the item of fixation suddenly removed, he felt himself be dropped back into a cruel reality. He glanced up and cleared his throat, sitting up as straight as he could with a shy nod.
"In our last session Amy shows a visible distaste for someone named Shadow. While you, I noticed became a lot more… talkative. You described him in a way you haven’t ever about Amy, are you aware?"
Sonic felt himself become smaller.
"Yes I know him. Amy hates him"
He hated the way she spoke about him. Since the marriage, Shadow seemed to disappear. Rouge explained he was working more and doing more missions further away…
The few times he had seen him.
They were nights he felt more happiness and excited in than he ever had with Amy.
Shadows ability to leave him breathless and sore days later. The black hedgehog had a way with not only his body but also his words, small phrases and whispers that had Sonic on his knees within seconds- ready to give his soul if the other asked.
They relied mostly on message now. Through an app disguised as a game.
And even then, Shadow responses became less and less..
"This is couples counselling, I am here for you and Amy. My job is to help you two figure out a solution wether it be beneficial to your relationship or…” the cat gestured to the air before shrugging and leaning forward once more. "I am however also here for you two to help sort through this one on one. This session is running a bit too low for me to elaborate however I am free this time next Sunday. I want you to come, either by yourself or with Shadow. No Amy"
Sonic perked up, giving the other an odd look.
"I will book for you and Amy on the Friday. This is apart of my process, to understand you both separately… and together. I will see you then" the cats eyes settled on him, watching quietly as the hedgehog nodded and slowly stood, heading out the door to an empty waiting room. Pictures of smiling happy families littered the walls, a certain poster beside the pamphlet display showing of a very sad looking fox with a number underneath.
He cringed to read the words before giving a swift acknowledgment to the receptionist as he took his coat and pulled the hood over with a scarf.
His phone vibrated softly in his pocket.
Maybe today wouldn’t be all too bad.
