Work Text:
It’s been two years since you met Scaramouche. You two are friends now—well, at least to you.
When he returned from being summoned by the Jester, he informed you that he'd be leaving Snezhnaya in a few weeks. He mentioned something about a meteorite.
Of course, you have to come along just in case anything happens to you while he’s away. Although he only ordered you to stay in the corner and not get any attention from people, you didn’t even get to see him most of the time.
You and Scaramouche got back rather quickly. You heard him talk about a blonde traveler with a white-haired companion. He appears both irritated and intrigued by them, and he talks about how they'll certainly interrupt him in the future.
A lot of things happened. You were there with him when he went to Inazuma and then to Sumeru. Just like back then, when he told you, he'd really become his own god. He got the gnosis, and the Doctor was already preparing for his godhood.
Even so, you refused to worship him.
It’s fine. Although he was a little disappointed, he never forced you. You just can’t see him that way. But it’s not like you were implying that you two were equal; he was way above you. He’s your friend—your first friend and your savior. And to you, that was more than a god.
Hence, Haypasia was his first follower.
Even if he doesn't show it on his face, you can tell he's pleased to receive his first follower. After hearing about his past from himself, you feel happy for him.
You're standing outside the Joururi workshop, stationed there with other Fatuis. Just now, one of Scaramouche's subordinates inside called out for you to come in. Naturally, who are you to decline? But you are both concerned and curious to see how much he changed.
Once you're in front of the door, the Fatui leaves you. It seemed strangely quiet—too quiet. It appears that Scaramouche wants to have a little chat with you alone. You let out a sigh and braced yourself before entering.
And there you see him, standing inside Shouki No Kami's head, with wires plugging behind him. Your eyes widen in amazement.
You heard him calling your name.
"Ah, welcome." He opened his eyes and gave you a small smirk. "Tell me, does this make you want to worship me now?"
You can't help but gaze at the wires behind him. Those fluids... Are those his power sources? Are those wires connected to him, allowing him to control the massive mecha? Thanks to Dottore and Azar, this experiment was a success. You're very fascinated by it.
To believe that humans can create something like this without the assistance of a god. Who exactly is the Doctor? There's still something weird and creepy about him, but you've decided to overlook it for the time being since you didn’t want to get in danger. After all, he did assist Scaramouche.
"Speechless now, aren't you?" You snapped back when you heard his voice again.
"Yes… I'm very amazed, Sir Scaramouche.”
He stared at you for a few seconds and gave a small hum. "You have yet to respond to my first question."
A faint, sad smile appeared on your face. "I told you, I have no plans to worship you."
"Always sticking to your creator, I see,” he said as he rolled his eyes.
"Yes, yes. Do you need something? Or do you simply want to have a small chat and maybe show off?"
He let out a small laugh after hearing that. "Perhaps both."
"Well, what can I do to help you?" you asked him.
"The traveler will be visiting me soon, and I want you to hide in the corner," he says, pointing to the spot you'll hide in afterwards.
The traveler, huh? You've heard so many stories about him. Always saving each nation he steps on just to find his sibling. And now he'll save Lesser Lord Kusanali and defeat Scaramouche. You don't doubt Scaramouche's strength, but it's the traveler we're talking about here. He consistently finds a way to save nations.
"I'll create an invisible barrier to keep your presence hidden," he continues.
“I could just wait outside and come back once you've defeated the traveler. Why do you want me to stay here?”
“There’s no need to hide it. You and I both know you want to witness my strength and my fight with him.”
"I'll be a nuisance in your battle; I don't want to interrupt. Besides, I might even get myself killed," you respond.
You can see his eyes narrowing as he crosses his arms around his chest. With a slightly irritated voice, he said, "Are you doubting my strength to give you a proper barrier?"
"No, no, I simply want you to focus on fighting the traveler—well, it's not like I'm saying you can't multitask—but what I meant is that it's better to reserve your power."
You didn't want him to go down the same path as your mother. You never told him this when you told your story, but there's a small part of you that blames yourself. What if your mother focused more on protecting you and the mansion back then, hence why she couldn't fight well and died? If only you were able to aid her at that time, you could've saved her and perhaps taken her place instead.
“Reasonable and understandable, but it’s no problem for me, really,” he replies. He looked at you with that smirk of his again. “I’ll give you a good show later.”
Noises can be heard below and Scaramouche can already feel three presences approaching. It appears that they have already defeated his subordinates, who are defending the area. You watch him create a barrier on his upper left side.
“Now go. My visitors are getting closer,” he says.
You sighed as his mecha’s hand gripped you, placing you inside the barrier. It's a great vantage point to witness their fight later. And now, you both hear the elevator going up. They’re finally here.
—
While you're watching from the corner, the four of them are interacting. You can't help but wonder what Lesser Lord Kusanali did before she was interrupted by Scaramouche. It was a green light that was coming out of her hand. It did not appear to have any effects, so you chose to stay focused on their conversation for the time being.
It didn't take long for their chat to end and now they're having a battle. You try your best to focus on watching from both sides. You were curious about how the traveler used his sword. Perhaps you’ll be able to learn something from him and use it later. As for Scaramouche, oh, you can't help but admire him even more. His Shouki No Kami is incredible. He looks so powerful—like a god.
The Shouki no Kami's hand smacked the traveler, attempting to squish him like an insect. The floor began to scatter, resulting in a massive hole in which the traveler fell. You try to glance down and observe them, but the traveler appears so small from your perspective.
You felt a chill run down your spine when you saw Shouki no Kami take a pose. It’s so massive. The traveler cannot possibly overpower him.
You continue to observe them and the traveler is obviously having trouble fighting him. As he ran around the machine's arms, he jumped and pushed his sword into the core, where the electro gnosis was located. However, he was pushed and pulled again by Shouki no Kami's wind force, and he was punched to the ground. That must've hurt a lot.
While powering up for an electro strike, he came to a halt when he noticed the Dendro Archon attempting to protect the traveler. His big hand strikes her and grabs her cape. The robot's head opens again, revealing Scaramouche. His words were barely audible, but then you see his hand suddenly thrust into the archon’s chest. You, the traveler, and Paimon are shocked.
When you looked again, though, all you saw were broken glasses everywhere. Then, they are instantly transported back to the upper floor, where they were previously. Are your eyes deceiving you? What just happened?
“We just concluded the 168th loop,” she says.
Lesser Lord Kusanali’s power. Right, she used her power before. Even though you knew you shouldn't reveal yourself, you still had the opportunity to warn Scaramouche.
“You can’t even defeat me in a dream,” Scaramouche says, mocking them.
On the 168th loop, there's a good possibility he killed either the traveler or the Dendro Archon, or both. After all, he was created by God. He's strong. But you can't help but wonder: What if you were spotted by one of these loops? What if they approach you this time and take you as a hostage? No, you shouldn't think too much. There's a barrier. You trust Scaramouche to keep you hidden.
You saw Lesser Lord Kusanali giving the traveler a golden knowledge capsule. Now, with this and the knowledge of Sumeru's people, he'll be able to defeat him. Scaramouche was infuriated. He banged his hands against the floor, breaking it again. This time, the traveler jumped into the falling pieces of the floor and landed unharmed. However, the Shouki no Kami reacted swiftly and struck him with an electric blow as soon as he landed. Unfortunately, he missed.
“Heh… are you done with your tricks? Can I finally take this as a real battle between gods?” Scaramouche says.
She clenched her hand in her chest and looked at the traveler.
"I'll leave this to you, the first Sage of Buer."
The final battle began.
—
The Shouki no Kami was charging for the Setsuna Shoumetsu cometh but was interrupted. His guard was down, and the traveler took advantage of the opportunity to strike him. His movements had stopped. Scaramouche lost.
The Dendro Archon rises in front of the core, where the gnosis is kept. She used her power to break the glass. Scaramouche sensed it. He will once again lose the one thing that was meant to be inside of him.
“No! Wait! Please, anything but the gnosis!” He begged and pushed the Shouki no Kami's head into bits in an attempt to get out. His hand stretched out to grasp the gnosis back to him, but the wires attached to his back held him back.
"That's mine! Don't even try...!" The wires are almost severed as he pulls to reach out.
"I'll never... I'll never go back!" Your chest tightened as you heard him shout those words. You've never seen him so vulnerable. You wanted to jump in and help him.
Once the gnosis was in her palm, the wires behind his back tore. Your eyes widened. You were really about to jump in and catch him, but the barrier that kept you hidden broke. It reminded you that you need to conceal, so you try to bear it and wait for them to depart.
Again, you caused trouble for someone who’s dear to you. If he had not given you the barrier, if he had kept even a small amount of power, he might have won. But then again, if you weren't there, observing him, you wouldn't have heard his final words. You pray to the Electro Archon that her son is still alive.
It didn’t take long for them to leave. They vanished unexpectedly, so you waited a minute to ensure no one saw you. Then you jumped out and descended to a lower floor. You landed safely. You've already had the necessary training.
Your body rushes to where Scaramouche has fallen. There, you saw him, unconscious and a complete mess, with the broken wires behind his back and the purple fluid dripping out of them.
You pulled him close to your body. You started to panic. Is he still alive? You can't tell. He doesn't breathe for life, and neither do you. There's no other way to tell if he's still alive except to experiment on his body and see if he wakes up, but you're not the Doctor. In addition, he’s your friend. That is something you cannot do to him.
Speaking of the Doctor, you should find him and seek his aid. The room is so empty. It’s so quiet… You gazed down at Scaramouche and placed him back on the floor again. You're afraid that he, too, will vanish after you leave, but you promise that you will return immediately after reaching out for help.
And with that, you left him in the room and went out quietly, making sure you wouldn't be seen by the people of Sumeru but... There's really no one guarding the doors anymore. Did the traveler defeat them all? At least one Fatui guard should be available to call for assistance. You gently opened the door that led to the Surasthana of Sanctuary, but no one was present.
They all left. The Fatui abandoned you two.
Why? Why did they abandon you two? The Doctor... He assisted Scaramouche with the project. Was this just another experiment for him, in his eyes? You did not anticipate him leaving his colleague like this. Now... Scaramouche's betrayal grows yet again. You are sad for him.
You rush back to the room, relieved that he's still there, yet... He’s still in the same position. He hasn't woken up. You drew him closer to you again, unconcerned with the purple fluids getting you dirty as well. You started to weep.
"Sir Scaramouche... Sir Scaramouche... Please... Wake up..."
You're at a loss for what to do. Should you two leave? But now you both have nowhere to go. Except for the Fatui, you don't know who to call for help. You don't know how to save him. Yes, you did learn a little bit about medications, but not much. Furthermore, they won't work for puppets like him. How are you going to save him?
You brushed his hair and wiped the dirt off his face. You wish he'd open his eyes or make a slight movement to let you know he's alive. Your tears had fallen to his cheek and your thumb attempted to wipe them, but they ended up blending into the dirt.
"Mother... what should I do?"
—
How long has it been since Lesser Lord Kusanali, the traveler, and his companion left? 4 to 5 hours... You continued to sit there, just holding your savior. Tears have left your face a mess. You wait for someone—anyone—to enter the room. And, as luck would have it, you heard the door open. You didn't even get to your feet, bracing yourself to keep him safe. All you want right now is someone to help.
It was the Dendro Archon. She approached the two of you. You could only look at her through your empty eyes. Surprisingly, she was not surprised that someone was holding the Balladeer.
"So, you're the one who was watching us. Who are you?" she asked.
You didn't even succeed in hiding your presence before. But, regardless, Scaramouche, as well as you, are her enemies.
Nahida's eyes widened, and she took a step back. "W-What are you doing?"
After laying Scaramouche down, you kneeled in front of her, pressing your forehead against the floor.
"Lesser Lord Kusanali, please... take me instead..."
She was taken aback to see you requesting to end your life instead. Especially now that it was the Balladeer you were attempting to save. She was concerned about you.
“Please save him… Please give him another chance…”
You continue to beg her. Scaramouche has already saved you, and now it’s your chance to repay him. Her footsteps are heard after a little pause. She is getting closer to you. You have already lived enough. You can finally reunite with your mother.
You already braced yourself for her strike, but it never came. You slowly looked up after sensing her touch on your head. Her sorrowful smile can be seen. Ah, she pities you. "Please lift your head. Don't kneel for me… I won't take anyone's life."
You eventually stopped kneeling and sat down alongside her. She saw that you were not dressed in the Fatui's uniform, yet you are associated with the Balladeer. Her hand moved to her chin as she started to ponder.
"Are you his friend?" she asked.
You gave him a fleeting glance before turning to face your lap. "I... don't know if he sees me as his friend, but... to me he is, a dear one at that.”
Her face is lit up with a genuine smile. For someone who is only thinking about the three betrayals, he has a loyal companion.
"He's lucky to have you as his friend."
—
Three days have gone by since then. Nahida has already confirmed that the Fatui abandoned you both. She assisted you and Scaramouche by providing you with a room at the Surasthana of Sanctuary to stay in. But he still hasn't woken up yet. He used up most of his strength during the fight, and the fall caused him major damage. Nahida assured you that he is still alive, so all you can do right now is wait. You waited for 500 years for your creator to return. This is nothing. You are patient. Especially now that you’re sure that he’ll eventually wake up.
In the meantime, you and Nahida talked about your background with the Balladeer. You told her everything—the truth—and answering her questions was your only way to thank her for saving Scaramouche.
The traveler and his companion are still unaware of your existence, but in a few minutes, they will enter the room with Nahida. She informed you last night that it was time to introduce yourself to them. Perhaps she is attempting to make you friends with him after you expressed your admiration for his swordsmanship during his battle with the Shouki no Kami. But his companion... You find her loud, but you'll try to endure her later.
You gaze at your companion, who is still unconscious. This gave you a nostalgic feeling. You recall the time he found you in your ruined home and took you to a clinic nearby. You were unconscious for five days and he waited for you to wake up. And now, you have exchanged positions.
Your eyes continue to watch Scaramouche, not wanting to miss if he'll make a movement. As minutes passed, you heard voices behind the door before it opened.
"Paimon just hopes we won't have to deal with his cocky attitude if he's awake now—Waaah! Who's this guy!?"
God, she's so loud… You stood up and bowed your head before introducing yourself. Paimon hid behind her companion after hearing that you worked for Scaramouche.
"The Balladeer? Wouldn't that make this guy our enemy?"
"Please calm down. He's not an enemy," Nahida quickly interrupts.
The blonde man places his hands on his waist and looks at his friend with a deadpan expression. Paimon let out a small laugh and came out from behind him. Their attention is back on you.
"You work for him but you don't wear the Fatui uniform."
"Paimon, they left them, remember?" the traveler says in a whisper. The three of you sat down on your seats while the traveler's guide continued to float.
"No, I never wore one,” you replied.
Nahida gives a brief explanation of your history with Scaramouche. As she did so, your eyes returned to him. You gently held his hand, and the traveler noticed. As he continued to listen to Nahida's explanation, he felt sympathetic to you. A puppet and a doll being abandoned…
"Huh, so that's what happened. Paimon never thought the Balladeer could be so nice. Well, you are a doll ... If you were human, I don't think he would’ve saved you."
Your eyes expanded slightly as your gaze shifted to them. The traveler was scolding Paimon and Nahida was sighing. Your vision is becoming blurry. If you weren't a doll… would he truly leave you there? He only took care of you because you were a little similar to him…
You shook your head, trying to stop your thoughts. It doesn't matter. He saved you, and you’re grateful to him. As you stare at him again, Nahida looks at you, feeling concerned after what Paimon said.
…
After an hour, the traveler and Paimon have already left. Nahida sat down next to you, smiling slightly.
"Worried?"
"Yes. He hasn't woken up for—"
"No, no, I meant... about what Paimon said."
Your attention swings to her before you look down at your hands. Your expression is as blank as ever. You already have a strong understanding of emotions. It's just… You just feel empty right now and wish Scaramouche would wake up.
Not feeling talkative, you simply shook your head to respond. Nahida looks at the unconscious man alongside you. After a while, you notice her making an effort to kneel on her knees in the chair and lean closer to you. Her hand reached up and patted your head.
"You're a good kid." And with that, she jumped off the chair and closed the door, leaving you alone with Scaramouche.
Good kid, huh? You're older than both of them…
—
Four days have passed, and it’s been a week since the incident. Every day, you get up just to sit in the chair and wait for him to wake up. Nahida would advise you to walk outside once in a while, but you insist on staying. You want to be there when he wakes up to reassure him that you've been by his side the whole time. The last thing you want is for him to think you betrayed him as well.
It was already near noon. Days would pass by so quickly. You haven't eaten anything for a week. Well, you didn't eat anything for 500 years back then. Both you and him don't need food to survive anyway. It's just... You miss the days when you served him tea every day.
You rose up, feeling a little nicer to yourself, and considered brewing one, but then you noticed a slight twitch from his finger. You instantly returned to your seat and continued to observe him.
Scaramouche gradually opens his eyes. He looked around the room and spotted you with a relieved expression on your face. He slowly sat up and then suddenly saw you jumping on the bed and felt your warm embrace. You didn't even bother to maintain both of your personal spaces. You're just happy that he's finally awake. But his eyes were so empty, and he did not return the hug. It's okay. After all, he just awoke.
"Sir Scaramouche, I'm glad..."
Ah, you remembered that you need to call Nahida now that he is up. With some hesitancy, you unwrapped your arms around him and got up from the bed. Just as you were about to leave, you felt a grip on your hand. He's looking at you, perhaps scared that you'll leave him forever. You gave him a reassuring smile.
"I'll call Lesser Lord Kusanali. Don't worry," you said.
"Buer..."
He was reminded that he had lost against her and the traveler. And he lost the electro gnosis once again. You felt his grip loosen. You leaned in and brushed his hair behind his ear.
"I'll be back quickly."
It didn’t take long for you to call Nahida. You’re back in the room with her, but... Scaramouche returned to laying down on the bed. Were you hallucinating? How did you go insane in a week and not when you waited for your mother for 500 years? You try to look again, and you notice some hair behind his ear. He did wake up.
"It appears that he's still tired. Let's give him more time to rest, okay?" Nahida says, comforting you.
You abandoned the idea of brewing tea. You kept looking at him all day, hoping to see him wake up again. However, it didn’t happen until the following day.
A few days passed and he hasn't said a word since, but you returned to your schedule to pour him tea. However, he never takes it. He doesn’t do anything. Either he lies down and looks at the ceiling, or he sits and looks at his lap. His mental health had become worse after the incident.
You try talking to Nahida, and she will give you the same advice. "Give him time." You know that, but... How long will he stay like this if you don't do anything? At the very least, something tiny might encourage him to speak or do something other than stare at the room.
You want to hear his voice again. Whether he will tease or mock you, it doesn't matter. You dislike seeing him depressed like this... Are you feeling the same feelings as when he brought you to the clinic? Ah, but you were responding to him. It couldn't be helped that you missed conversing at that time. You were not this quiet. His condition is far worse, and you wish you could do something for him to talk again.
Your hands held his, but surprisingly, he didn't pull back. You pressed your forehead to the back of his hand, closing your eyes. You hope he recovers soon…
…
It has been three weeks since then, and Scaramouche is now recovering. He'd respond now and move around the room. The tea you would offer him would be empty at the end of the day.
There are nights where you can hear his cry, but you choose to do nothing. You didn't want to ruin his moment since you knew the instant you moved and spoke to him, he would stop crying. After all, he didn't want to show anyone his vulnerable side, and you wanted to express his emotions. Of course, he is aware that you are listening to him, but he doesn't care. Many things happened but he's glad that you still chose to stay with him.
Nahida and him would talk, and you would simply sit there and listen to them. You were relieved that Nahida would release him, but it appears that she did so in exchange for him investigating the Irminsul. And maybe trying to persuade him to side with her. You are currently on both sides, though. Scaramouche saved you, and Nahida saved him. You prefer to remain silent.
After another week, he has returned to his old attitude. He told you to no longer call him Scaramouche. Okay, that is understandable. He is no longer working for the Fatui, and you two are just... a lost puppet and a doll together, with no idea what to do. He did tell you that he named himself Kunikuzushi but he had already dropped that name as well. So complicated... You didn't know what to call him, so he let it go and let you keep calling him the Balladeer for now.
Just before he’ll go to the Irminsul with the traveler, you two spent the day together. Simply chatting and enjoying one another's company. You two talked about what you did while he was unconscious. He apologizes and laughs that you just sat there waiting for him to wake up. It was the first time you two had spent so much time together without interruption.
Back then, he’d be preoccupied with his work. Is it so awful that you're pleased he's no longer working there so you can spend more time together? You're not sure if he still wants to go back, but you suspect he's lost interest. After all, he joined them solely to help him achieve godhood. He was never loyal to Tsaritsa.
When night fell, Scaramouche invited you to lie on his bed with him. Although you were taken aback, you accepted the request. Just as he turned out the lights, you were already lying on the bed with your hands on your chest. You're always sleeping in that position, like a dead person in a coffin.
"Can you... embrace me?"
Your eyes widened at his request. He never asked you to be this close to him. You faced him and hesitantly wrapped your hands around him. With a sigh of relief, he reciprocates your hug.
He felt safe.
Your hand slowly goes up and down his back. You're happy to learn that he didn't mind showing you his vulnerable side, yearning for comfort. It didn't take long before both of you became drowsy and ended up falling asleep.
The morning came too soon, but he still has some time before he begins his task. You two spend time together again, just speaking or enjoying the stillness if there is nothing to talk about. You didn't mind it. It wasn't uncomfortable. Hours passed and now Scaramouche is dressing up in his Fatui attire again while you assist him with his accessories. You decided to stay and wait in the room. The Dendro Archon did say it wouldn't take long to get information in the Irminsul.
"I'll try to get information about your creator," he said.
Your creator... Right, you still don't know anything about your mother. She told you nothing. Her name, where she is from, and her entire past. All you know is that she created you and many of your siblings, and she treated you all as if you were all her children.
You bowed your head to him. "Thank you..."
He paused and stared at you before reaching for his hat. He called your name, and you stopped bowing, slightly tilting your head in confusion as to why he had called your name so suddenly. He shook his head, saying that it was nothing. He turned around and headed outside, then paused to put on his hat. He took another glance at you, making eye contact. His hand rests on the doorknob, then slowly closes it.
“Goodbye.”
And with that, he shuts the door, leaving you alone.
Good... bye...?
That was something he had never said before. Maybe he meant "see you later." He's not going to... leave you, right? He did promise to gather information on your mother. Furthermore, as someone who understands betrayal, he would not do it to you. Did you do something wrong? You've always been by his side. He wouldn't have reason to abandon you yet... You still feel uneasy.
—
An hour has already passed since he left. He’s already inside Irminsul's inner region, together with the traveler and Paimon. Just now, they found out that Niwa didn't betray Scaramouche. It was all the Doctor's doing.
"... Dottore? Hahaha... Dottore!"
He was the one responsible for the Tatarasuna incident. He fooled him twice. He convinced him that Niwa had abandoned him, and he even made him join the Fatui and even experimented on him. He was just another subject in his experiments.
Dottore killed an innocent man and even blamed him. That heart that Scaramouche threw away... It was Niwa's…
He felt sick to himself.
The traveler and Paimon allowed him some space while chatting with Nahida. After a while, they checked in on Scaramouche to see if he was okay. The dark-haired man simply gave them a smug look. He upheld his tasks and tried to investigate more about the blonde boy's sister. Unfortunately, there was nothing. Nahida has already told them that the other twin was not one of the Descenders.
Scaramouche felt like being nice—actually, no, he only said it to fulfill Nahida's request to at least share something about the sibling. He informed them that she might have records in the Irminsul because of Khaenri'ah. Nahida approved the information, despite it only coming from him.
“Good. In that case… I’ll take some time for myself now.”
An unexpected barrier arose, surprising both the traveler and Paimon. It was to disconnect communication with the Dendro Archon. He has already spent most of his strength, so he should hurry before it breaks.
"His creator... died during the Archon War." Oh, he was referring to you. That statement took them both by surprise. The traveler asked if he was talking about you, and he nodded in response.
He crossed his arms on his chest. "She goes by the name Matryoshka."
He didn't have enough time to research her, so he's hoping the name is sufficient. You can return to Fontaine to find out more about her.
"Matryoshka, huh? A very unusual name," Paimon adds before shaking her hands. "Wait, wait, why are you telling us this?"
"Aren't you going to tell that to him?" the other man asked him.
Scaramouche ignored their questions. He told them that since he shared a secret about the twin, they should return the favor. He wanted to ask a question and then asked for the traveler's hand. They both looked at him suspiciously before the traveler held his hand.
"Can you hear my voice inside your head?"
He got wary after hearing his voice. Paimon could only look at them with confusion.
“So tell me: In this world, is it possible... to change the past?”
The traveler's eyes widened, remembering about Greater Lord Rukkhadevata. "Wait, why would you ask that...?"
Scaramouche has already let go of the hand, not responding to his question. Paimon asked about what happened and he only said that he was just thanking her friend's aid. Then he turned around and walked away.
This is when Aether realized that not denying the question had already answered it. He dashed to reach for him, but it was too late.
"Fast reaction time. But I don't think we'll be seeing each other again," Scaramouche said before he vanished.
"From this day forth, the names "Balladeer" and "Kabukimono" will cease to exist.”
—
It has been an hour since Scaramouche left. You cleaned up both of your beds as well as the floor. After that, you sat on your bed and stared at his. Your thoughts kept returning to what he had said. This feeling... Oh, you remember it so well. It’s exactly the same as when you were waiting for your mother. If he hadn't said it, you wouldn't be this bothered. It would be like the old days, when he would go out for work and always come back.
With a sigh, you decided to go speak with Nahida, just in case. As you reach the Sanctuary of Surasthana, you can see her having trouble. You approached her and she heard your footsteps.
"Oh, it's you." She gave you a short glance before returning to fixing the connection. "Is there something wrong?"
Your hand moved to your chest, and your gaze shifted down the floor. "Lesser Lord Kusanali... did Sir Scaramouche ever mention to you about leaving Sumeru?"
She paused. "Not at all. Furthermore, he's still my prisoner and he's still healing. What makes you think he's leaving?"
"He... said goodbye..."
"... I don't understand the problem. It's only natural for someone to say goodbye when they leave. But he’ll be back after gathering information in the Irminsul; don’t worry," she replies.
"But... he never said that, even when we were still at Snezhnaya. He would leave for days for work without saying it, but I know he'd always come back. So why say it now...?"
Nahida got concerned, then immediately asked you to kneel. You did so, and then you felt her touch on your forehead. You notice her using her power and your body tenses up. Did you do something wrong? Why is she using her powers on you?
"Calm down. I am only trying to take a copy of your memories with him."
Your memories with him? But why? You don't have... What's it called again? Amnesia? You're perfectly healthy—in a doll's way. Now that she mentions it, is there a chance you'll forget about everything? Even your mother? You're afraid.
She said with a small smile, reassuring you, "Don't worry. Everything will be fine. Now go back to the room and wait for him. They're almost done with their task.”
"... Thank you, Lesser Lord Kusanali." You bowed your head and walked away. However, your mind is still preoccupied with worries. Nevertheless, if the God of Wisdom says it's okay, you believe her. You sat back down on your bed, but instead of staring at his bed, you stared at the door, waiting for it to open and reveal your friend.
But Scaramouche never came back.
—
“Gaaah! Paimon’s had it with that little brat! He’s been nothing but trouble ever since we met him!”
The traveler and Paimon have just left the Irminsul. Nahida transported them to one of Sumeru's rooms. After the two explain what happened, Nahida goes to deal with an urgent matter. Meanwhile, the two talked about what Scaramouche might do. If he does attempt to change the past, it will not be easy.
"Seems like now there's nothing left for us to do but go to sleep, but Paimon's still so worried! Paimon won't be able to sleep a wink tonight..."
"Me neither," the other responds.
"So how about, uh... w-we list all our favorite foods to take our minds off things? Heck, if that doesn't work, Paimon's probably gonna collapse of anxiety here."
He nods his head in agreement, and then Paimon begins to list her favorite foods. Time passed quickly and it was already the next day.
…
"... Mm? Huh..."
The traveler has his hand on his waist and looks at his companion in confusion. "Paimon? What's wrong?"
"Uh... what are we... Wh-What was Paimon supposed to be doing just now?" she asked.
"You were getting so worried about the situation with the Balladeer that you started listing foods."
"Is that a food, too? Huh... Weird name, though..."
His eyes widened. Paimon doesn't remember anything anymore, which means Scaramouche has successfully erased himself. He has so many questions. How did he do it? What happened to the Tatarasuna now? What will happen to his seat on the Fatui? Screw it, he drags Paimon back to Inazuma. However, he feels like he's forgetting something, but he'll focus on the Balladeer right now.
…
They're back in Sumeru after their little journey. The past did really alter. Scaramouche was no longer the one who assaulted the swordsmiths; instead, it was referred to as someone else. But even so, Niwa Hisahide still died.
He's relieved that Kazuha and the others are safe. The incident still occurred; it's just that he erased his connection to it—even though he will always be.
They went back to the Sanctuary of Surasthana to speak with Nahida, but it seemed that she had forgotten about the Balladeer as well. It really had an effect on everyone in Teyvat. The traveler is so fucking tired of fixing everything. With a sigh, he explained—the Electro Archon's creation, the Tatarasuna incident, the Balladeer, the sixth Fatui Harbinger, his three betrayals—everything.
It took a long time, but he's relieved that Nahida understood right away.
"Please wait a moment. I want to check something," she said. She closed her eyes and moved her hand to her chin in concentration. After a moment, she extended her hand and a glowing green cube emerged.
"Found it. This should be the one." It was a record of her personal collection.
They opened it, and it recounted the story of Scaramouche. Surprisingly, she recorded it as if it were a fairytale: Niwa and Katsuragi were foxes, he was a cat, and the kid with an illness was a bird. It's very Nahida-like. It was very cute, despite the tragic story. It turns out that the cube has his very own memories.
Paimon wanted to lift up the traveler's spirits, who had always been the one doing everything. Nahida agreed as well. And so the two went for a walk in the Grand Bazaar to clear his head. Still, he feels as if he is forgetting something—actually, two.
He sat down on one of the seats and started digging through his brain. Paimon could only watch him strive to solve things. He eventually remembered one of the two things he'd forgotten. He recalls their encounter with the Greater Lord Rukkhadevata. She claimed that no one could erase their existence. If that's the case, the Balladeer hasn't disappeared entirely. The question is: What happened to him?
When he heard a familiar voice, he turned to look in that direction. He was surprised to see the Balladeer, Scaramouche, Kunikuzushi, Kabukimono—whatever his name now is—in the Grand Bazaar. Seriously, despite having so many names, he never settled on one. So troublesome, really.
But anyway! He’s there! He’s really there! He didn’t completely vanish!
He pointed and told Paimon that it was him. He's so... blue now—the opposite back then. He was red before. He even looks so... polite. This might be the closest they'll come to seeing his Kabukimono side.
Scaramouche had already left to pick up Sunsettias, and the two followed him. However, he did sense their presence.
"Have we met before?" he asked, shifting his gaze to them. "No, we haven't met... but you know me?"
The blonde boy nodded his head. This is becoming more complicated. Even he had forgotten who he was. Scaramouche didn't believe he knew him until he confessed that he knew he was a puppet. It's not something he shares with many people.
"... Look, I'm just a wanderer. But seeing as you've gone to all this trouble to track me down, I'm sure whatever it is must be important.”
The traveler said, “There’s somewhere I want to take you.”
“Okay, but please let me deliver these goods to my boss first.”
They returned to Nahida after bringing the Sunsettias to the man who provided him with shelter from a storm. He's quite friendly to people who take him in. He is only a puppet who longs for a place to call home. If the Tatarasuna tragedy hadn't occurred, he might still be living there and watching over Niwa's descendants. Just maybe.
Nahida told him about his 'previous incarnation' and allowed him to experience his memories. Thus, Wanderer, Traveler, and Paimon entered the Reminiscent Drift. They walked into the Shakkei Pavilion as soon as they arrived. It displayed memories of Katsuragi's first encounter with him and his return with the ill child.
After further exploration, they heard the Jester's voice. It brought back memories of when he was welcomed to the Fatui. Later, they reached the Delusion Factory in Inazuma. It was here that he came across the traveler for the second time. The memory portrays the Balladeer and the Fair Lady having a conversation—more like bickering. They never get along.
After another exploration, they find themselves back in Sumeru, standing inside the Joururi workshop. It displays him, Dottore, Azar, and a Sumeru researcher discussing plans for his godhood. Following that, they return to the location where the three spoke with the Shouki no Kami.
Wanderer looks up as he asks the Dendro Archon, "You're a god... Do you think I'm evil?"
"If you accept that he is you, just as you are you, then yes. You are evil," she responds.
"In your eyes, are there any differences between humans and puppets?"
"Do you think there are any differences between your present self and your previous and future incarnations? If not, then what are the differences between humans and puppets? Whoever has tasted the joys and sorrows of life in the human realm is human. Whoever has loved and lost, cried with grief, howled with rage at the tragedy of death that eclipses the miracle of life... they are human, too."
Wanderer stares down, processing what the God of Wisdom has said. "... I've seen enough of my past. If possible, I'd like to reclaim the sins that are mine to bear. Can you return my memories to me?”
"Huh? But won't that mean you'll lose your current identity?" Paimon asked with a sad look on her face.
"Regaining your memories means reverting completely to your previous incarnation. All the emotions that you experienced will return to you. Are you sure you want to do this?" Nahida asks.
"I've always felt I have an innate tendency to yearn for something more, in a way that goes deeper than for most people... But for all my soul-searching as a shugenja, I've never fully understood it. Looking at it now, it seems that I brought this curse upon myself."
His gaze shifted up again and he extended his hand.
"So I beg of you... grant me this opportunity to gain a purpose—to change my destiny and end my wandering."
“Very well.”
A little light floats before him. As his hand was about to touch it, it flew into the empty chest. As his memories return, his hands rest on his head, and he kneels on the floor. Traveler and Paimon could only watch as he suffered.
Their eyes widened as the Shouki no Kami suddenly appeared behind them, preparing to assault them. If the Balladeer has been erased, then who is controlling it!? The blonde boy cast a glance at the other, still taking in his memories, before charging in and fighting to protect him. The robot uses its cryo element. It produced a big piece of ice that came close to hitting Wanderer. The traveler acted quickly, tearing it into pieces with his sword.
"Hey! Are you done yet!?" Paimons shouts at him as if he wasn't still having a hard time processing.
When they turned their backs on the robot, it had already launched an electro strike at them. The next time the traveler opened his eyes, Wanderer stood in front of them. The attack's smoke and dust swirl around the blue man before dispersing. An anemo vision appeared in front of him.
He wiped the dust off his cheek with his thumb and grabbed it. His eyes checked the glowing orb before letting out a small chuckle and shifting his gaze towards the robot he once used.
“Die.”
—
After defeating the mecha, they returned to the Sanctuary of Surasthana. Nahida welcomes them back.
"Welcome back, Aether, Paimon and Balladeer."
His eyes narrowed, and they noticed. It appears that he no longer likes being addressed by that name. After discovering what the Doctor did to him, he'll never return to the Fatui. Well, they're unlikely to welcome him back anyway. They had already forgotten about him. And they don’t accept losers.
At least he is leaving the Fatui for good.
Nahida taught him more life lessons, and it appears that he will be working under her from now on.
"... Then I guess I'll be helping you from behind the scenes from now on."
"I'm glad that you're accepting our proposal. Why don't you choose a new name to celebrate?” Nahida suggests.
Paimon got excited at hearing it. She had a collection of ugly nicknames for him.
Nahida says, " A name is life's first gift. You didn't say it out loud, but I know that's what you're thinking. Traveler and Paimon helped you a lot. If you can't decide on a new name, maybe you can ask them for ideas.”
"Huh? You want us to decide?"
Paimon quickly answered him, "Nope, Paimon only does nicknames! If it's a serious name you're after... it's all yours!"
At least Wanderer wouldn't have to suffer under an ugly name. After a while, the traveler finally gave him a name he could accept. After more discussion, Wanderer exits first, followed by the other two.
Well, everything appears to have been solved. Yet the traveler still felt like he'd forgotten one more thing.
—
The next morning came, and the two were already dressed, ready to explore more of Sumeru. But then Nahida's voice in their heads suddenly interrupts them.
"Traveler, Paimon! Please come to the Sanctuary of Surasthana. Quick!"
Then her voice disappeared. The two exchanged confused looks before running—floating for Paimon, actually—back to Nahida. "I thought we solved everything. Did another problem occur—Oh, it's you!"
Wanderer glanced at them with a deadpan look on his face. "What?”
"No, it's just that Paimon didn't expect that we’d bump into you... But, anyway, we better go now!"
He stares at them before asking a question. "Did Lesser Lord Kusanali also call you two?"
"Also?" the other boy asked.
Wanderer nodded and mentioned how irritated he was when Nahida interrupted his meditation. The three hurried up, wondering why she had called them so early in the morning.
As soon as they opened the door, Paimon shouted. "Nahida, are you okay!?"
"Lesser Lord Kusanali... why am I here? Why were there two beds in the room I stayed in? Whose chamber did I stay in at the Fatui Headquarters? Who did I dance with on that day? Who dragged me out of my home? Why... Why does my chest ache...?"
You sit in front of her as you grip on her dress, looking up to her as you cry.
Traveler's eyes widened. How did he forget? One of the most important people for Scara—Wanderer, you! The memory of the Balladeer mentioning your creator's name comes back. He never intended to return to you. Scaramouche expected him to tell you your creator's name on his behalf.
Nahida looks at the three with a frown on her face. "It seems that we had forgotten to solve one more problem..."
They were all so focused on the Balladeer that they had completely forgotten about you. Now the question is: does he remember you? The memories he gained—were you still in there?
It was answered the instant Wanderer ran and embraced you, causing you both to fall to the floor. Your body flinched when the stranger suddenly hugged you. His grip on you was so firm that if you were human, you could have had a fractured bone. No, this is not an exaggeration. He's really hugging you so fucking tight.
"Lesser Lord Kusanali, who's... this man?"
You are from Teyvat. Of course, your recollections of him will be forgotten. Wanderer loosens his grip and stares at you. He's relieved that removing himself didn’t mean that you'd still be in that ruined home. It also looked like nothing had happened to you. You still appear the same. He sighed in relief as he wiped the tears from your eyes.
Meanwhile, you're there, avoiding his gaze. Why is he acting so close to you? You don’t even know him. You're weirded out, especially now that he's wiping your tears. You decide to stay silent until Nahida says something.
Traveler and Paimon exchanged smirks before returning their attention to you two. They will definitely use this to tease Wanderer later. And let's not forget when you mentioned dancing with someone .
Nahida chuckled at the sight, then extended her hand. Another glowing cube appeared. It's just like the last time they were trying to remember Scaramouche. You looked at it, perplexed.
"Do you still recall when I took a copy of your memory?"
Oh, you remember that, but... Why did you exit the room at that time again? Your head hurts as you struggle to recall the memories. It was just two days ago. How could you already forget?
"Did I really have amnesia...?" If so, you're relieved she kept another copy of your recollections. Wait, how could she have predicted that you would lose some memories? You never mentioned having a headache. Moreover, your head wasn't smacked by anything.
"Amnesia, huh? You can say it like that, but I'll leave the explanation to your friend."
"Friend? I have a friend?" you thought.
"Friend? He sees me as a friend!?" Wanderer thought.
The stranger moved and allowed you to stand up. You then pat your dirtied clothes before hesitantly holding the glowing cube... What do you do? Do you open it? How do you even open it? You're waiting for Nahida's instructions. But then the box disappeared and the bright light inside was brought out.
"This will answer your questions," she said.
The light slowly entered your chest. The memories with him... You remember now. Scaramouche. The Balladeer. Your savior. Your friend.
Your eyes returned to the so-called stranger. He... changed. He looks very different than before. So he's really quitting the Fatui? Will he have more time to spend with you without being interrupted by his work? You dashed and embraced him, just like he did earlier. Your eyes started shedding tears again. How could you forget him?
"Sir Scaramouche... Sir Scaramouche, Sir Scaramouche..."
You were afraid that he would leave you. You didn't want to be left behind again.
"I don't go by that name anymore. I'm just a... wanderer now," he says.
So he did quit the Fatui. You're not sure if his previous names are still acceptable to him, but you'll discuss it later with him, along with the explanation that Nahida said so. Right now, you're just relieved he's back.
"Paimon's just glad that everything turned out well. Why did you even get a copy of his memories?"
"It was a lucky one. When we disconnected when the three of you went inside the Irminsul, he unexpectedly came out of their room and spoke with me." She then narrows her eyes at Wanderer. "If you hadn't said goodbye to him, he wouldn't have gotten out of the room. I wouldn't have a copy of his memories."
“Is that so? I did intend to leave him, but not for the wrong reasons.” He shrugged.
“Yes, I wanted to change the past. And also..." He looks at you, then pats your head. “... I didn't want to keep dragging him with me. I know he wants to discover more about his creator, but he could never leave Snezhnaya. He just accompanied me to Inazuma and Sumeru due to my previous plans. He never got to go back to his nation, Fontaine.”
He stops caressing your head and turns back to face the Dendro Archon. "Well, at least now that I no longer work for the Fatui, he can stop calling me sir. He's free from me now."
"Oooh, Fontaine? That's our next destination; maybe he could go with us on our journey there?" Paimon asked, excited to have someone join them.
You shook your head. "I don't know what you're talking about with this past that you changed. But I want to go with you, sir Scaramouche. I'm sure you're still Lesser Lord Kusanali's prisoner, but I'll wait. I'll wait so..."
Since when did you have this confidence? Normally, you wouldn't ask for anything this big from someone. You didn't want to bother anyone, after all. Perhaps you want to discover more about your mother with him, or you just don't want to travel with Paimon. You still think she is too loud. But the traveler is fine. He’s a quiet guy.
"... I apologize. That was immature of me," you murmured.
You didn't want to force him. Besides, he's still recovering. He must be tired of you by now, and you already bother him enough. If you wish to travel with someone, it would be either your mother or him. But he's the only one left since your mother is gone. If he does not wish to accompany you, you will either remain in Sumeru or travel alone. But you have attachment issues.
"You're no longer working for me, so don't let me pull you any further." He took a few steps back, leaving a small distance between you two. He gave you a small smile. "Go and search for information about Matryoshka."
You tilted your head as you heard him mention a name. For some reason, it was familiar. "Matryoshka?"
"Oh, Paimon remembers! You mentioned that name after you made the barrier when we were inside the Irminsul!"
“You actually expected us to tell him that instead, right?” Traveler asked, crossing his hands across his chest.
Wanderer rolls his eyes. "Yeah, yeah. You're the hero in almost all nations. Delivering one piece of information is not a problem for you."
“Matryoshka? If you’d like, I can dig up more information about her," she said, glancing at you.
You shake your head. “It's okay, Lesser Lord Kusanali. I want to look it up myself. Besides, I've already troubled you enough… but thank you.”
So your mother's name is Matryoshka. If you want more information, it's best to go back to your home. Although you doubt there is anything left, at least you can return again after two years.
It’s already been five hundred years, huh… You felt like it hadn't been that long. The neat mansion, the room full of books, the kitchen, your bedroom... You miss those days.
You shake your head, sparing the sob thoughts. Now's not the time.
“If you ever want to travel with us, just let us know,” Traveler said with a smile. He's a really nice guy.
Paimon sighs, "It's a good thing Nahida preserved a copy of your memories. Otherwise, we'll have to run back and forth again.”
“Sorry for the sudden call. I only recalled the copy after you three arrived here,” Nahida apologizes.
"It's nothing! Paimon's glad everything's been solved now!"
After that, Traveler and Paimon left. Nahida also did not keep you two, so you and Wanderer spent time in the city. Now that you think about it, this might be the first time you've spent a day together. During his Fatui phase, he was too preoccupied with his work to spend a full day with you. Well, those weeks after his defeat, it didn't feel like this. You simply spent time together in the room, but this... You two are walking around the city.
You were having fun.
This was a first for you. After all, you never leave the mansion, and Scaramouche would keep you in his chamber. But he does let you enter the training hall and go around Snezhnaya city, but you were always alone.
Wanderer told you everything—when he erased himself and how the three supported him. You weren't angry with him and you forgave him instantly. Given his story, you can't blame him for having such thoughts. But it also motivates you to keep an eye on him. There's always the possibility that it will happen again, so you'll be sure to stop him when it comes.
—
One year has already passed. You continue to be by Wanderer's side. Nothing much happened, and you still haven't visited Fontaine. It's okay, though. You are patient. You will always have plenty of time for that. He told you once that you didn't have to stick with him, but you insisted. You told him that you liked being by his side.
Months ago, the Akademiya Extravaganza festival was hosted. He was forced to represent the Vahumana by Nahida and was officially registered as "Hat Guy'' on the paper. She only did it after finding that he was attending their lessons. It was all a misunderstanding. He was only invited after he started to make commentaries regarding the situation of Tatarasuna in the students' essays. He didn’t expect the students to consider him one of them.
About his name, you’re still unsure what to call him. Now that you saw him as someone you don't really work with, you stopped calling him sir. You once tried to address him by the name he gave himself back then, Kunikuzushi. Of course, he disliked it. Later, he lets you call him by the shorter version, Kuni.
While he was busy working with the Dendro Archon—and with his essays and studies—you continued to train. You haven't had a vision, but you're skilled with your weapon. You've decided to join the Adventurers' Guild. You didn't need mora, but you figured it would be wise to save some for your trip to Fontaine in the future. You only accept missions that include fighting since you intend to build up your strength so that when you and Wanderer travel there, you can fight alongside him. He would always protect you back then, but you don't want that now. You want to repay him for everything he has done for you.
There was one time when one of your commissions was to go to the desert. The moment you stepped in, you thought that you wouldn't be able to handle the heat. But you still took the challenge. You were expecting to overheat, but to your surprise, you felt cool inside your body. You were confused, so you questioned Nahida about it, but Wanderer intervened. He finally told you that during your spar back at Fatui Headquarters, he saw a faint string on your hand—your finger specifically. He claimed that it was glowing in the color of the element cryo.
Commissions and training were not the only things you did. You also try to read books and improve your writing. Your mother taught you that back then but nothing too impressive. You don't plan on being a student at the Akademiya, as you aren't smart enough for that. However, you were only interested in reading some of their books. Particularly in history. It makes you nostalgic for the days when you used to read storybooks. You still haven't grown out of it.
Today, you finished a book you've been reading for the past 6 days and just finished 4 commissions. The commission you just finished was to defeat a Ruin Drake: Skywatch. It took you a while to get rid of it since it flew up. You're not an archer, so you couldn't target the weak point in its wings. You had to use your surroundings to find materials to hit them. You could throw your sword but is it really worth the risk? What if you threw it far away? What if it gets stuck in the ruin machine? Fortunately, the site where you fought it was near a ruin, so there were plenty of rocks to throw at it. Perhaps it's time to practice bows.
You managed to keep your clothes undamaged for today, which is a good thing. You wouldn't need to fix it later. Back then, you would struggle to knit them back together, but Wanderer was always there to teach you. You're back in Sumeru City and have just claimed your rewards from Katheryne. Before returning, you stopped by Puspa Cafe and purchased a candied Ajilenakh nut. You sighed as you opened the door and saw Nahida. You greeted her.
"Welcome back... Oh!" Nahida immediately noticed the food you bought.
"For you, Lesser Lord Kusanali," you said, handing it to her. It's just another way for you to thank her for looking after you and Wanderer.
She thanked you and accepted the bag of candy with a smile on her face. She really liked the dessert. It made you think of one of your siblings. She’s tiny, just like her, but is actually smart—yes, even smarter than you when you're the oldest, although perhaps your creator developed her to be so—and enjoys the desserts your mother prepares for you all. Just thinking about her brings back memories of your other siblings. You're still wondering if they all did really died…
The two of you talked about what you did today and after a while, the door opened again, showing Wanderer. You both welcomed him back. He looks at the paper bag that the Dendro Archon was holding. His eyes switched to you, giving you a deadpan expression.
“Did you get her another of those sweets?”
You replied, "At least I'm giving her a gift for looking after us," with a deadpan expression.
“Why would I offer her anything when I'm a prisoner?”
"Well, that is true..."
Nahida chuckles at you both before turning her gaze to your wrist. She called out your name, and your attention shifted back to her. She mentioned your hand. You looked at it and noticed the string wrapped around your middle finger. Wanderer nodded, confirming that it was the same string he had seen previously. You don't know why it suddenly appeared.
"Does it hurt or anything? What do you feel?" Nahida asked.
"It doesn't hurt, but I don't know why it suddenly showed up..."
"Then, can you move your hand around slowly?" You did what she asked, and then the three of you became aware that it was pointing in the same direction as if it were a compass's arrow.
"That direction... It seems that Fontaine is already calling out for you," she says.
Huh? It's pointing to Fontaine? Could it be… that your mother is still alive? Ah, but Wanderer has already confirmed her death. But why is her power still with you? You can't even control it. Perhaps there's more information about the direction it is taking. Could it be back at your house?
You looked at Wanderer.
"What?" He can already see your pleading face, despite the fact that you have a blank expression. He motions his hand, shooing you. "Go, go. You don't need permission."
You looked down, having a small frown on your face. Nahida noticed it, and then she clapped her hands, calling him by the name the traveler gave him.
"Why don't you two go together? I'll give you five days to enjoy Fontaine."
He rolls his eyes. "And what do I have to pay back?"
She places her hands on her waist and looks up at him. ”You two have been here for a year. It's not bad to take a vacation every now and then, right? But if you truly want to compensate me…”
She turned around and went inside her office to retrieve something. After a while, he hands him a kamera. “Take a few pictures. I'd like to know how you two enjoyed Fontaine.”
"Tch, whatever."
"I didn't know you had a kamera," you said.
"I bumped into Aether and Paimon at Grand Bazaar back then. They were taking photos and I tagged along with them. I took an interest and bought one myself. Anyway, I'll deliver a letter to them so they can assist you two. They promised to do so.”
"I've already been to Fontaine; we don't need their assistance." Wanderer scowls.
“Oh? But no one will be able to introduce all of the fun you can have there. If anyone is good at it, it's them. I'm confident they've already learned enough about the nation to assist you both.”
He sighed. "Great. Another debt to repay them."
“There you go again. They promised to help you two, and it is simply an act of kindness.”
"You say that as if I'm friends with them."
“Maybe if you act a little friendlier towards them, you will.”
“It’s not my problem if they refuse to accept my attitude.”
"Umm, I saved some mora." Their attention shifted to you. “I don’t know if it’s enough…”
He crossed his arms. “Ah, right. You suddenly began working at the Adventurers' Guild. How wise of you to save money.”
A trip to Fontaine will cost many mora. Also, you don't intend to let him sleep outside and will reserve a hotel room for both of you. And since you're heading to another country, you're likely to buy a lot for him, Nahida, Aether, and Paimon. And for yourself too, maybe... You'll most likely purchase a new sword and probably a bow too, but you can't think of anything else. You'll just leave it to your future self. You don't doubt that you'll be excited and buy a lot. You only hope you have enough funds to do so.
"And how much did you save up?" Wanderer asked.
"Around five million mora."
"... That much?"
You haven't bought much in the last year. You only bought candied Ajilenakh nuts for Nahida and tea and coffee for yourself and Wanderer. You treated Aether and Paimon to dinner about five times since you would see each other when working commissions, but you haven't seen them since they headed to Fontaine. You've been fighting the same enemies for a year, so you're curious how different they are there. But you don't intend to do commissions during the five-day trip. Finding out about your mother is your main task. Whatever, you will undoubtedly come across some when traveling anyway.
You can see Nahida's eyes lit up when you mentioned how much mora you saved. "We will buy desserts for you, Lesser Lord Kusanali, but please try to control your sweet tooth. Eating too many sweets is bad for your teeth."
Her hand rubbed her head and she laughed lightly, obviously embarrassed. You did see her once eating two plates of candied Ajilenakh nuts. For a god, it's nice to see her having a childish side.
“I won't keep you two much longer. I'm sure both of you are exhausted today. I'll let you know once Aether and Paimon arrive. In the meantime, you can prepare what you'll need to bring.”
"I don't really have much to carry with me," Wanderer says.
"Don't forget to bring the kamera," Nahida reminds him.
"Whatever."
…
"Do you really need me to come with you?" Wanderer asked you. “I believe you're grown enough to travel alone. You don't need me anymore. If you choose to, you can move to Fontaine. You've been with me for three years already. You don't have to be by my side forever.”
You two had just entered the room, and he had already spoken directly to the point. You don't feel that way, like you're his slave. As you expected, you are troubling him. Perhaps he has grown tired of you.
"That's not how I feel..." You shook your head. "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have bothered you. I'll inform Lesser Lord Kusanali that I'll go alone..."
“It’s too late now. That midget wants me to take pictures. But that's not really what I meant to say, though. If you keep sticking with me, you'll become too attached. You won't be able to see the outside world for yourself.”
"I'm already attached to you, Kuni..." You frowned, looking down at your hands. “I still want to be by your side. If you find me annoying, then... please say so. I'll stop bothering you.”
He stared at you for a moment before sighing at your response. “It's clear just from hearing about your commission experience that you have a strong desire to see the world. I don’t want to be the one who prevents you from pursuing it.”
You understand where he's coming from, but you're really in no rush. You're immortal; there's always enough time to do that, and you can always decide when to leave. Right now, you want to remain by his side.
He noticed you weren't responding, so he sat on his bed, crossing his legs. “We can discuss this later. Our main task is to travel to Fontaine. Make sure you have everything you need to bring.”
You simply nod your head in answer. After that, you both rest without saying anything else. It happens all the time, but this time you felt more awkward. When you return from your trip to Fontaine, maybe it's time to make a major decision. Even still, you can't take the thought of being parted from him. The separation from your mother has already caused you a great deal of emotional pain. You don’t want to repeat it again.
—
Three days passed and Nahida visited the room to inform you two that Aether and Paimon had already arrived back in Sumeru. The day has already arrived. You're looking forward to seeing Fontaine and hearing about their experiences there. You read one of Akademiya's books that stated that you can dive underwater, and you're eager to do it. You're quite excited to return to your native country.
It startled them both that Wanderer was joining them. Paimon and him would argue during the journey, while Aether and you would simply watch them. He would take that opportunity to tell you about his adventures, and he seemed pleased to see you so interested in them. When he mentioned his fight with the Electro Archon, Wanderer mocked him for only winning because of the people's combined power of their ambitions from the visions. However, you find it amazing that he can stand up and battle a god. That makes you admire him even more.
You had to pass through the desert on your way to Fontaine's entrance. The weather is as hot as expected. Wanderer would sometimes pull you to get under his hat. Naturally, he shoos the other two. Paimon told him that he has favorites and his response was to only stick out his tongue at her, making her more angry. They would just use Aether's cape to keep themselves out of the sunlight.
When Paimon learned that your body would be slightly cool when going to the desert, she would cling to you. You didn't mind, as long as she stopped talking so loudly. Aether does as well, although you noticed Wanderer glancing at him with displeasure. You told him that you weren’t bothered, but you'd still see him staring at him with the same expression.
On that night, you four rested near Vourukacha Oasis. There wasn't much sand, and there was a huge tree to keep everyone cool. Only the two of them slept, while you and Wanderer are fully awake. You're not exhausted. You spent that time taking in your surroundings. You were unaware that such a site existed in Sumeru. It was understandable, given how little you explored in the desert.
The next morning, all of you continued your journey and finally saw the entrance of Fontaine. Everyone had to hop on a waverider to get there. It was a little cramped, but everything went well. You stared up at the tall structure in awe.
Paimon beams as she raises her hands. "Welcome to Fontaine!"
"We're still at the entrance," the blonde boy said.
"I know, I know, Paimon just can't help it, hehe."
You can already smell Fontaine's water. You miss the fragrance here. Everyone got on the elevator to go up, where they could view many mountains and large waterfalls. Going back here reminds you of the time Scaramouche saved you. Three years have passed since then... Time goes by so quickly. Paimon signals for you three to get onto the aquabus. You spotted a small, cute, blue creature.
She introduced herself to you and Wanderer. Her name is Aveal, and she is a Melusine. She gave you information about the boat and her species. She also mentioned the name Neuvillette. Paimon told you two that he's an Iudex and added that maybe he could help you. You checked your hand again and looked to see where the string was pointing. It’s still north.
"This is where I found you," Wanderer says. All eyes were on him. The aquabus was near the West Slopes of Mont Automnequi. As the boat left the cave, he gazed to the east. It was Poisson. "And that's where I brought you."
"But the string is pointing to neither location..."
"String? Oh! Nahida did mention to us you having a string on your hand." Paimon looked at your hand. "So it's true. Is that really your creator's power?"
You give a nod in response, then turn to face Fontaine City. You all arrived and stepped out of the aquabus. Everyone thanked Aveal, and she waved goodbye to everyone. Before entering the elevator, you looked at the string again. It was pointed upward this time.
Paimon looks at your string as well. "Up? Where could it be trying to take you?"
"What a stupid question. If we go up, we'll find out," Wanderer retorts.
"Oh, shut up!" she stomped her leg and glared at him angrily.
You and Aether sighed together. You four had only just arrived, and there was already another argument. Later, everyone got in the elevator and transported you all to the top. Everyone sees the building with a massive door. The string was leading you inside.
"The Palais Mermonia? Could it be that Neuvillette really has something to do with you?" Paimon wondered.
You don’t remember meeting him. Could it be that he knows your mother? If that's the case, you're hoping Iudex is kind and willing to provide information about her…
Everyone entered the building. You and Wanderer stood in the corner as Aether and Paimon spoke with another Melusine. After that, they told you two to wait for a moment while they spoke with Neuvillette before entering his office.
The Hydro Dragon's gaze turned towards them. "Oh, it's you two. What brings you both here?"
"Hello, Neuvillette!" Paimon waves at him.
Aether also waved. "There's something we need your help with."
He rose up from his seat and walked up to them. "Please let me know how I may be of assistance to you two."
"It's actually not us who need your help, but we have a friend and he needs information about his creator," Paimons says. "He's here with his friend too, so... are they allowed to come here?"
"I see. In that case, please do bring them here."
After giving a nod, Paimon went outside to call for you two. As you entered the office, you and Wanderer immediately sensed Neuvillette's strength. He’s a powerful individual. Despite this, he seems like a gentleman. You both introduced yourselves, and he did as well.
"What seems to be troubling you?" he asked.
You extended your hand, and everyone looked at the string. It was pointing at one of the cabinets. You were stumped. You assumed it would point at him. What was hiding inside that cabinet?
"Sir Neuvillette... do you perhaps know my creator, Matryoshka?"
His eyes widened a bit. "So it's you. I would like to apologize for opening the present that was meant for you. I was being cautious about what was inside."
You all gave him a puzzled look. He then went to the cabinets and pulled out a box. He approached you, and the string around your fingers expanded, entering the keyhole. It then opened the box.
"It’s unlocked! Wait, you said you opened this box. How did you do it—and even lock it again?" Paimon asked him.
“Any element can be used to open the box. I had no issue controlling my power to open it and lock it once again,” he responds.
"Huh, that's weird. Wait, wait, how do you have this anyway? Did you meet his creator?"
“I didn't, unfortunately. This was on the previous Hydro Archon, Egeria's property. I sensed the cryo element and wondered why she would have it, so I opened it. I've been holding on to it ever since, hoping to find its owner.”
"Huh... Huh!? So this guy's creator is the previous Hydro Archon!?" Paimon points at you as she asks with a shocked look on her face.
"No, he is not," Neuvillette denied.
"Wait, how would you know that?"
"You will all understand once you open the box." He then handed it to you, and you muttered a small thank you to him as you accepted it.
You opened the box to reveal three items. A beautifully crafted pin, a folded piece of paper, and a small mirror. Neuvillette instructed you to use the mirror first, and you did. Your other hand holds the box, while the other holds the mirror. When you saw your reflection, it flew out of your hand and landed on the floor. A small, cold wind blew through the room and the mirror expanded.
There, you saw her reflection. She uttered your name and greeted you.
Your eyes widened. "Master..."
You didn't even realize you had used that term again. You now refer to her as your mother, but you addressed her as your master back then. Your old habit has returned.
Your eyes become teary, and they shed a tear. You hold the box tightly to your chest. You were afraid... Afraid that you would one day wake up and forget her face. You've always feared that. But now that you see her face again, you’re relieved to see that she is still the same as you remember.
“If you're watching it, then... I believe Lady Egeria gave you my gift,” she replies with a faint, sorrowful smile on her face. “Oh, but if I gave it to you myself, please return it to me right away!”
Ah, it was only a recorder. It was expected. You're just glad that you can watch it as many times as you want. Just to hear her voice and see her face again…
She gave you 30 seconds of silence to give it to her if you actually did receive it from her. After that, she continued, “If Lady Egeria really did give it to you, then... I'm sorry. I’m sorry for leaving you…”
You shook your head, despite the fact that she would not see your reaction.
“I really wanted to say this first, but... I view you as more than just my doll. To me, you're my friend, my son... I know you have many questions, so I will tell you everything.” She cleared her throat before bowing. “My name is Matryoshka Khorkina, and I'm a Snezhnayan.”
Huh? Snezhnayan? So she wasn't a Fontainian?
Everyone keeps an eye on the record. Your creator took out a small doll that carried another smaller one. She used her strings to make it move.
"I will tell you my story."
—
Matryoshka Khorkina. She was thirteen years old when everything changed. Her mother died from an illness and the family was too poor to afford the medication. Her father was already a retired soldier who expected her to carry out his duties. However, he considers women to be weak. He had always wished to have a son, but he got her instead. Nonetheless, he continues to advise her to fulfill his duties. Being in the military has long been part of his family's tradition.
Of course, she did not want that. She has no desire to become a soldier. She wished to create lovely outfits. She was a lady, after all. But in order to survive, she followed his father's commands and trained. But, without his knowledge, she created a doll and carried it in her pocket. She didn't have any friends; therefore, the small doll was her lone companion. She decided to give the doll a name. It was your name.
She had a secret spot where she could be herself. At the age of 16, she managed to get a side job. She planned to divide the money equally between her father and herself. The money she earned would be used to purchase fabric and sewing supplies for a dress. It took her a year to finish sewing a lovely outfit. She wasn't earning much, so it took so long. Of course, she never wore it in public and made it known to everyone. She didn't want her father to punish her, so she only wore it in secret.
An idea popped into her mind. She spent four months designing a lovely costume for her companion. The doll was only wearing an oversized shirt, so she felt guilty. Snezhnaya was cold after all, but it's not like the nonliving companion would ever feel it. She dressed him in an Ouji-style costume.
“I wish I were like you... No gender, yet you can resemble both a boy and a girl.” She stares at the campfire she lit before lowering her gaze to the ground. “I wish I was a boy instead…”
Then perhaps father would've accepted me…
She took a sip of the tea she had brewed, and her tongue poked out. She didn't enjoy the flavor of the new tea she bought, but she is attempting to make it appear a bit more elegant. If she continues to hide, his father will find out sooner or later. Perhaps she'll try going out at various times.
Two years have gone by. Matryoshka has been hiding her secret for five years now. She was exhausted, both mentally and physically. All that training and lying to his dad had left her worn out but her secret base was always there to help her unwind. But lately, she's been feeling more alone. She speaks with the lifeless doll rather than everyone else. She wished it would talk.
While walking to the city with her groceries, she comes across a shop. Her eyes widened when she noticed the poster on the glass. They wanted to hire a woman who could sew. The payment was also greater than what she was earning currently. Her legs quickly led her back to her home.
"Oh, you're back," the man says.
"I-I bought the groceries."
He noticed how pleased she was. It was unusual for him to see her smiling as she returned home. She put the goods in the kitchen and began preparing dinner for the two of them.
It was already seven at night when she finished plating the table. And classic, her dad is talking about the military as he always does. Even during dinner, her father can't stop talking about it. She despises it, but she pretends she doesn't in order to avoid an argument. But today was different; she was feeling confident, so she spoke.
"F-Father, I have something to say..."
He looks at his daughter with a more serious expression. It was obvious that she was nervous.
“I found a shop earlier that was hiring a worker to sew clothes…!”
"Not this nonsense again, Matryoshka," he quickly responded.
"B-But, they pay a lot more than what I earn now! I can sew...!"
“Sew? Since when did you learn to do that? Sewing is not a requirement for becoming a soldier.”
This is it. This is her moment to prove it to him and finally show him that she can do it. She went into her room and got the dress she had just finished last week. She hid it behind her, then reluctantly showed it to him. "I just finished making this one..."
"... This one? Are you implying that you made more than one?" he raised his eyebrow.
She nod. "See? I think I'm capable of doing it, so..."
“We already discussed this. I should be upset with you for keeping this a secret.” He sighed and rose from his seat. “Dispose of this idea, Matryoshka. You're turning eighteen soon and will become an official soldier for Snezhnaya.”
Startled, her eyes grew wide. Why? Why didn't it work? She worked hard for this, yet it did not reach her dad. Sure, it may not be the finest dress there is but it was incredible for a kid like her to make it, especially given her circumstances.
"... Why?"
“Toss that away. I shall confiscate those garments you created and the sewing equipments as we—”
"Why?!"
He glances at his daughter, stunned. She was normally a calm child.
"I tried to prepare and train to be a proper soldier solely for you! Why can't you let me do what I want!?”
The father stares at his daughter, who is yelling, before suddenly seizing her dress and stepping near the fireplace. Her entire body grew cold. No, no, no! She spent months making that!
“I'm your father. You should listen to me.”
“Why are you so cold…? Everything has been worse since Mama died... It's almost as if you were waiting for her to pass away so you could finally gain control of me... Aren't fathers supposed to bring happiness to their children?”
Her father retorts, "That is not true. Some are expected to be tough for the sake of their children. They're bound to discover that reality isn't as simple as it appears.”
“But Father... we are currently earning enough. I don't have to be a soldier. My passions could earn me mora.” She gave a small pitiful laugh before exhaling. “Ah, right. Your family has a long tradition of military service. It's no surprise that you couldn't do what you have always wanted. You've entirely surrendered to your family's desires.”
The next thing she felt was her dad's slap on her cheek. Well, she was expecting that. She's tired of being silent. She looked at him coldly. It didn't last long once she saw him tearing the dress apart.
Her eyes widened in horror. "Father!"
"You will not be a tailor; you will be a soldier," her father stated firmly.
Her eyes were filled with tears as she stared at the ruined dress. When her father tossed it aside, she rushed to catch it and hugged it close to her chest. She glances at him, angry and heartbroken.
“When Mama died, it didn't even take you a day to move on. Did you even love her? Or did you simply marry her solely for the sake of having a child and have already planned their future to carry on your family's legacy?”
The dad merely glances at her with his piercing gaze, clearly furious at his daughter.
“How unfortunate that I am not a male, right... She deserved a better man, and you shouldn't have been my father.” She gave him a tired look. “You're the worst man... Igor .”
Hearing his daughter say his name, he gave her a sharp gaze before taking something from his pocket. It was the little doll she made. Her expression was instantly filled with regret, and she immediately checked her own pocket.
She should've stayed quiet.
"How foolish of you to leave this behind."
"How..." Then she remembered. She placed the doll in her cabinet when she was in the bathroom earlier. The dress he tore was also there. "You knew..."
“I wanted you to confirm that you really did make it.” He knew yet acted as if he had no idea. He's really toying with her.
“I'll sell the other outfits you made, as well as the materials you used to make them. Tomorrow, I will speak with Commander Nikandr. You'll be an early soldier.” He tossed the doll on the fireplace. “For Snezhnaya.”
It felt like time had slowed down. The next sensation she felt was a rush through her body. When she saw the lifeless doll almost fall into the flames, her body moved swiftly and her right leg hit the back of her dad’s head, causing him to hit the wall and fall down. She dashed towards the fire, grabbing the doll without caring if it burned her hands. She attempted to put out the fire by using the water on the table that was supposed to be for her dinner. She slowly returned her gaze to the man. Her eyes were widened and cold.
"Don't ever touch him."
This was the moment that encouraged her to leave. She approached the unconscious man. Her hand cautiously touched his pulse. She lets out a sigh, a bit relieved that her dad is still alive. Of course, something like that is not enough to kill him. He's well-trained and has one of the highest ranks in the military.
She stood up and went to her room, planning what she would bring. She simply carried one bag, which contained five outfits for herself, a towel, and a medical kit. She didn't want to bring much that would slow her down. Returning to the kitchen, she grabbed a knife just in case. As for her doll, she put him in her coat's pocket.
It was nighttime, everything was dark, and it was snowing heavily. She chose to spend the night in her secret spot and gathered some of her belongings there. The outfits she made and the materials used. Additionally, a pen and notebook. And, of course, the dagger she purchased a year ago. This is where she only feels grateful to her father for training her to fight.
…
After a short sleep, she peeked outside. It was still dark, but she had planned to depart before the sun rose. She put on her bag and looked in the mirror. She noticed the smile on her face. She was overjoyed to be free from his father's palm. Just the thought of leaving Snezhnaya excites her. She bowed to the place where she could be herself and bid farewell to her true home, then left.
“Now… where do we go?”
Matryoshka began wandering around till she came across the outside of Snezhnaya. She turned back again, not regretting her decision. With her final breath visible on the snow, she took a step beyond the border. The warmth surrounds her body. Its sensation was unfamiliar to her.
With no time to spare, she hurried as far as she could. It wasn't long before she was far away. To preserve her stamina, she chose to walk around and enjoy the landscape while keeping her footsteps quiet in case monsters were close. So far, she's only fought slimes. She would see unfamiliar ones from afar but would simply observe them. She doesn't want to take the risk of discovering what they do since she doesn’t have a vision.
Days have passed after wandering around. She wonders what her dad is doing. It's futile to try to find her and bring her back. It doesn't matter; it's none of her concern now. All she has to do is leave no sign of her path. For the time being, she is resting in a little cave. Her gaze is drawn upward to the water pouring from the sky. She had never witnessed rain before. The outside world was unknown to her.
Taking the doll out of her pocket, she turned it to face the downpour. "Look... it's rain..."
Being born on Snezhnaya means only experiencing snow. The sun would still rise, but the cold would continue to fill the air. Something new, like this—rain, sun, and wind, but not as chilly as Snezhnaya's—was very intriguing to her.
She started a fire and placed the fish on a stick beside it to cook. She was unsure what was edible, so she grabbed the ones that were familiar to her. Five fish and two sunsettias. She isn't particularly picky, but... Oh, how she wishes she could cook the fish in a finer dish. It's still cold outside, and she wants to start sewing new clothes again. She needs to find a new home soon.
After an hour, she stripped off most of her clothes. She soaked a towel in the rain and scrubbed it against her body to clean herself. She could withstand the cold, but then she sneezed. She hurriedly put her clothes back on and hung the towel somewhere before sitting next to the fire, placing her hands near it to warm herself. Her attention turned to her doll next to the bag.
"It's just you and me. Just like always..." she sighs. "Which direction should we go now..."
As the night got darker, she added all the wood she had collected earlier to the fire. She lay down, wrapped in her coat, and used the bag as a pillow. She placed the doll next to her, covering it with the coat as well. She gave a smile before closing her eyes.
"Good night..."
…
An alarming noise woke her up. It was footsteps. She hurriedly drew out her dagger. It continued to rain, making it difficult to see the guest. Her breathing slowed, and her eyes searched the surroundings. After about three minutes, she began to doubt herself. Was she being too paranoid, and was it just the rain? She sighed, and her body relaxed.
That was a mistake. The next thing she noticed was the cave's left wall being shattered, and she felt gigantic claws holding her down. It was a Primordial Bathysmal Vishap. She recognizes these creatures from a book she once read.
She stabbed the dagger into the creature's hand. It roared out in pain. As she was going to stand up, its tail slapped her from behind and pushed her outside, rolling on the ground. Her body was covered with mud, but she quickly stood up and took a position. She took a deep breath to calm down.
A small dagger couldn't possibly kill it; she might need to stab it several times while maintaining her stamina and calculating the openings she could get. Fortunately, the vishap wasn't cryo or electro; otherwise, it would've been even more difficult for her.
When the monster's focus returned to her, it charged, preparing to use its claws to attack. Matryoshka swiftly avoided it and stabbed it near its core. Another roar, and she took a few steps back. This is going to take some time.
…
Fifteen minutes had passed. She managed to stab it twelve times. The creature was down, so she took advantage of the opportunity to charge and stab it in the center. However, the vishap uses its hydro power to launch an attack against her. Her body was pushed into a tree by its powerful blow.
"Aghh!" Her hand moved to touch her back. That really hurt her. Before she could get up, the creature launched another attack at her, then dashed towards her to attack her with its claws. She screamed in pain again. Her arms are covered in bruises. The monster's weight continued to press her down. If this continues, she’ll die.
Another strike from its claws causes her to cry out in agony. Her legs are hurting. One more, and she'd be unable to walk. She attempted to flee with her weakened arms, but the creature's hand gripped her head. No, no! It was still just the beginning of her new chapter! She can't die yet!
Her eyes are slowly shutting. All she could feel in her body was pain and the coldness of the rain. Was it the wrong decision to run away? Was she meant to remain silent and allow her father to control her? Did she mess up...?
She called up the doll's name. "I'm sorry..."
Just as her eyes closed, she felt a strong and cold wind surrounding them. Then a dazzling light shines through the night, almost blinding her. There, she saw a light blue, glowing orb before her surroundings became frozen, as well as the vishap. A cryo vision has come and saved her.
"... Huh?"
She glanced at the vision in front of her before returning her attention to the motionless monster. The rain appears to have helped. She sat down carefully and reached for the orb. She examined it before moving and used the tree to help her get up. However, she lost her balance, but before she could fall to the ground again, she accidentally used her new power, creating ice canes to support her. Well, this will help her at least.
Her hand touched the beast. It amazed her how frozen it was. She hopes it won't melt before she departs. Back to the shelter, feeling relieved that her luggage and doll were unharmed. She picked up the towel she had hung earlier and used it to wipe herself. She winced when it touched her bruises. She was tired for the night, so she could only hope there were no more monsters.
Using her last strength for the night, she lay down again and wrapped herself in the coat. Her hand holds both her vision and the doll on her chest. Later, her eyes closed and she passed out again.
…
Bad idea. She shouldn't have washed herself after dinner, and she should have covered herself more before going to sleep. The next day, it was still raining. Her body temperature increased. She was sick. Before leaving her house, she should have checked out her medical kit. It lacked some medicines, and it included the cure for a fever.
She had no choice but to take shelter in the same cave that day. At least the vishap remained frozen. If only she had received a pyro vision, it would have helped her warm up. The gods must be mocking her. Really? A cryo vision? The element of Snezhnaya's Archon? She hid it in her pocket, feeling bitter.
The same coat covered her entire body. She had already used all of the wood for last night, so she had to go out earlier and get some more. It took her longer to start another fire because she needed to dry them first.
…
The next day arrived. She remained ill, but the rain had ended. She took advantage of the chance and started looking at her map. Fontaine was the closest city to her, according to the pin she placed. It would take hours to get there, so she rushed to reach there so she could buy a fever cure as soon as possible.
After several hours of running, she could see the city. Her feet hurt from all the running and walking, and she was hungry as well. As she was ready to take another step, she stumbled over a rock and fell to the ground. She was really nearby. She must endure the pain for a bit longer till she gets to the city, but her body was exhausted, and she didn't get enough sleep last night. And with that, she lost consciousness.
—
Her eyes slowly opened. The first thing she saw was an unfamiliar ceiling. She blinks once, then twice, then instantly sits up.
"Oh, you're finally awake." She looked on her right side to see a woman. She took a glance at her appearance.
"Pretty..." The lady smiled as she heard her words. It took her a moment to comprehend what she had said before bowing and apologising. Her gaze scanned the room. "Umm... Where am I?"
"Welcome to Fontaine, our dear guest."
Fontaine...I reached the city!
"One of the guards found you nearby. You had a high fever, but I assume you're feeling better now?" Matryoshka nodded her head in response, feeling grateful for the hospitality. "I'm glad. It's on the house, so there's no need to pay."
She shook her head. "No... I should pay." She looked around to find her bag at the end of the bed, then felt anxious and grabbed it, starting to look for something inside.
“It's all good. And rest assured. Your vision is safe.” The lady was then slightly stunned when she held and embraced the doll. It appears to be more important to her. "Is it your friend?"
She returned her gaze to the woman, nodding. "Thank you for saving us..."
"If you don't mind me asking, what is a foreigner doing near Fontaine City?"
She slowly averted her gaze. It's only right to tell her her story. After all, they rescued her. With a sigh, she began to tell her—except for the part about what she did to her dad…
After a few minutes, she was done telling her. There was an awkward silence. Will the lady send her back to Snezhnaya? Will she snitch? But then she felt her hand on her head, patting her.
“I'm sorry you had to go through that... You are welcome to stay here in Fontaine. We welcome you here.” She smiled at the young girl. “I'm proud of you for making it this far.”
Just hearing that, Matryoshka's eyes became teary before she began to cry. When was the last time she received a compliment? When was the last time… someone mentioned they were proud of her? This caused her to become emotional. It's as if her mother has returned.
She embraced the doll, her only companion, even tighter as she cried.
She eventually regained her composure and wiped away her tears. She thanked the lady once more before the door opened. It revealed another woman.
"L-lord Egeria," she said, bowing her head. "We told you we could look after her."
The nurse sighed, then smiled as she saw the patient already awake. "And she's finally awake! My lord, why didn't you inform us..."
"Oh, I apologize. We had a small talk."
She sighed again before turning her gaze to Matryoshka. “I'm sure you're hungry. I'll be right back to bring you a meal.”
Meanwhile, the patient was taken aback by the nurse's politeness towards the lady. Was she a big deal? She mustered up the courage to ask.
"My name is Mastryoshka. May I know your name, ma'am?" she asked.
“Ah, right. We have yet to introduce ourselves.” She rose from her seat and bowed. “I am Egeria, the Hydro Archon and the ruler of Fontaine.”
Her eyes widened. All this time, she had been chatting with a god!? She didn't say anything disrespectful, right...? Is her relationship with the Cryo Archon close? Will she be sent back to Snezhnaya? But Lord Egeria said she can stay in Fontaine…
“I apologize for leaving so soon. I still have more duties to do. I'll ask one of the nurses here to inform me once you've been discharged.” And just like that, she left.
The Hydro Archon... She was a very kind lady. She'll make sure to pay her back when she's allowed to leave.
…
A week later, Matryoshka was released. She was sent to the Archon's office. Egeria offered her the small cottage near the gates. Of course, it shocked her that the Hydro Archon was extremely kind to her. She promised to compensate her after she earned enough mora. For the time being, she is focused on her gift for rescuing her.
Her new house was small, but it was more than enough for her. It reminds her of her secret base in Snezhnaya. Once she had settled into her new home, she began selling the costumes she had previously created, but of course, people were still skeptical of her because she was a foreigner. But then a woman purchased one, which drew the attention of many people, who eventually accepted her. She was glad that she didn't have to seek assistance from the Archon again. Although she didn't produce many clothes, they earned many mora. With the money, she can make more outfits.
Back to her gift, she ended up asking the city tailor about Egeria's measurements. It eventually led to getting friends with the tailor and working there. After almost three months in Fontaine, she had a great time and finally finished her gift to the Archon.
As she enters the building, a guard leads her to Egeria's office. After they're left alone, she surprises her with a beautiful dress. It came in gold, white, light and dark blue. The archon gasped in awe. She adored it and eagerly changed into it. It surprised her how perfectly it fit her. Matryoshka explained that she asked for information from her new tailor friend.
The Archon seems pleased. She was glad. She gave her the payment for the house she had given her. Egeria declined and said it was alright, but she was stubborn, so she ended up accepting it and thanking her.
“Thank you, Matryoshka, for this beautiful dress. I will cherish it.”

A decade went by. Matryoshka became a fine lady. She had already mastered her cryo power and had learned the art of weaponry. She developed into a powerful woman. After four years of working at the tailor shop, she had enough money to build a new house outside of Fontaine City and decided to live in the Belleau Region. A few months after that, she took an interest in alchemy. And two years later, she left the tailor shop, but she remained making clothes. She altered her course and had another goal in mind. That is to give the doll a life.
She desired for it to have a life after years of companionship. It has always been with her and was her first friend. It may appear strange to others or she may be called a freak, but that's how she truly feels. The burn from the fire that day remained obvious. She did not like that. She wanted to improve it rather than create a new one. And so she started doing her research.
Her skills in alchemy have grown over the span of three years of experimentation. But it took her another year to achieve her goal. She's currently in her basement, inserting the final piece into the humanish doll.
It's the little doll.
She closed it’s core and dressed it in a big white shirt. Her hand caressed it’s face, satisfied with her work. She then took it’s left hand and started enchanting a spell. The room became brighter as light surrounded them both. Five minutes later, she opened her eyes to see a small light on the doll's wrist. It marked the number one. Her gaze returned to the face, waiting for it’s eyes to open.
"Please wake up..."
Seconds, then minutes passed, yet it still hasn't woken up. Did she fail again? Sighing, she let go of the hand. She might have to do more research. However, she saw the doll's eyes slowly open. She got nervous and put her hands on her chest.
You finally woke up.
Your vision was a bit blurry at first before it gradually became clear. You first saw the ceiling, then a woman. You slowly sit up and stare at her. Meanwhile, Matryoshka gasped in surprise and made a noise of happiness before jumping and hugging you.
"Good morning," she said happily while rubbing her face on your shoulder. She pulled aside and glanced at you. You appear unbothered.
"Mother...?"
Her eyes widened. She didn't expect you to address her like that. She also noticed your voice was a little sore. She will need to fix that later.
"Please, call me Matryoshka," she says. Is she really old enough to be considered a mother now? Oh, how quickly time passed. She was already 28 years old.
"Master..."
She was even more surprised when you called her that. Why didn't you call her by name? Whatever the case, it's better than being called a mother. She still prefers to believe she’s still in her youth.
Many events have happened since you've finally regained consciousness. You have several experiences, such as reading, eating, and much more. It didn't take you long to meet Egeria. She paid you a visit two days after your birth. She hasn't seen Matryoshka in a long time.
When she spotted you, she bowed and greeted you. Meanwhile, you continue to hide behind your creator, but you realize you're disrespecting a god, so you reluctantly come out, bow, and introduce yourself. You simply stared at them while they talked. Then you see the archon's hand patting your creator's head. She complimented her on her hard work and told her how proud she was of her. When you glance at your master's face, you can see her smile. You were moved.
It made you want to make her smile like that as well.
When the time came for you to venture out into the outside world, she extended her hand for you to take it. You hesitate to do so. It was your first time seeing grass so close. But once you looked up and saw the sun, you felt a strange sensation that caused you to head back inside the mansion. Matryoshka wondered what was wrong. You had no idea why, but the instant you felt the sunlight, you became scared.
She grew concerned and immediately remembered how her father threw the small you into the fireplace. Were you terrified of the heat because of that? But you have no recollection of what happened then. You still had no consciousness previously. Could the little doll she put inside have caused this?
Of course, she didn't force you to come out. She'll wait for you to have the courage to step outside. Still, it made her worried. If the heat is causing you problems, she’ll have to take action.
That night, you were both back in her basement. You were unconscious again as she performed another experiment on you. She opened your core and placed a crystal next to the doll. It was created by alchemy and her cryo abilities.
“I don't know how long it will last, but... I hope this helps you in the future.”
—
The time passed again. It’s been seven years since your birth. Your creator made more dolls like you. Just a week ago, she made her 19th one, the youngest sibling in your family now. The Hydro Archon stopped by again to congratulate her. You offered both of them tea while they were chatting. You left them alone to work in the kitchen. Egeria's gaze was on you as you walked away.
She sips her tea. "Your son seems troubled."
Matryoshka choked on hers and started to cough. Egeria only chuckled. "Please don't call him that..."
"But you created him. Wouldn't that make you his mother?" she responds.
She wiped her mouth with a handkerchief. “Well, that is true... Anyhow, what do you mean by that?”
“Just from the look on his face, he seemed anxious... Ah, don't tell me, did you start showing more affection to your other children and end up forgetting about him?”
She slammed the table and her face is red. "Lady Egeria...!"
The Archon only laughed at her, clearly teasing her. "But he really seemed troubled. Have a talk with him later," she continues with a more concerned tone this time.
What could possibly give you trouble? She showers you with plenty of affection and even prioritizes you more than everyone else. Could it be that you were really jealous? She shakes her head. She'll talk to you later tonight.
As time passed, it was already 10 p.m. Just as you were about to go to bed, you heard a knock on your door. You heard her voice and you quickly opened the door for her.
"Is there something wrong, master?" you asked.
"Is there something troubling you ?"
You stared at her before shaking your head. "Nothing..."
"You know you shouldn't hide anything from me... Please tell me. I want to help you." She gave you a comforting smile. Your creator really is a kind person. She shines so bright... It's almost like the sun.
“Master... why am I the only one who doesn’t have combat abilities? Did you... forget to program it for me?”
She wasn't prepared for you to ask her that. Should she tell you the truth? She's concerned that it might ruin your relationship with her. All of your siblings possess battle skills, which they may use to assist her in the future. As for you... She was waiting for the day when you could make your own decisions. When that time comes, she'll be there for you.
Unlike you, the other dolls are not as uptight. All of you have free will, yet you act so careful. She didn't want to force you. What if you simply enjoy it? Of course, she's not a strict woman and is generally kind, so why are you so cautious? Is it possible that you simply view her as nothing more than your creator and master?
Previously, you failed to address her by name. Would you still refuse if you called her your... mother? That was the last thing she wanted. That's why she's giving you time to make your own decision. She doesn't intend to force you. If she did, it wouldn’t make a difference between her and her father. That's why she didn't grant you battle skills.
Plus, if she did, she'd prefer to teach you herself rather than do another experiment on you and give you a feature of it. Perhaps... She sees you a bit as herself—a little less of a doll and more of a human. She wanted to give you something she hadn't received from his dad before. Freedom of choice.
She could've done that with the other dolls, but most of them had yearned to have combat abilities. Meanwhile, you have yet to make a wish. But that's fine. She still has years to spend in Teyvat. She will always wait for you to mature (mentally) and become a son she can be even more proud of. For the time being, she wants you to take your time and do things you enjoy, such as reading, cooking, and cleaning.
Now that she thinks about it, what if you simply consider yourself her servant? You never tell her anything, so she can't read your thoughts. She offered you a little smile and held your hand before calling your name. “Your siblings... they wished to have one. Tell me, would you like to have it as well? But, my dear, I'm not pressuring you.”
Unlike father…
“Please let me know once you have made your decision. I will wait.”
Should you ask her for it? What if the experiment takes longer than anticipated? Will you disturb her? Should you ask your siblings for advice? Ah, but what if you also bother them? You're not exactly that close to them. It's just that they're more enthusiastic than you, as you're usually the quiet one. Your siblings thought you were suitable to be their elder brother, but they had no idea you were as childish as them.
You answered, "I'll give it some thought…"
Her hand pats your head, and then you feel her lips on your forehead. "Good night."
After watching her leave, you sat on your bed. Combat qualities... You need to be strong and have good physical strength. That requires you to walk outside and embrace the sun. Is that something you can do? What if you fail? What if you ended up destroying your own body?
What if your master simply discards you and creates a replacement for you?
You fear that. She's a kind individual, but... Are you truly worth saving for? You're aware that her treatment of you was different. (The way you viewed it was bad.) You noticed it but never asked her for it. But why? You don't recall doing anything wrong. You do your tasks like the good doll you are. Perhaps you're just not special like your siblings…
…
Days had passed since then, and one of your siblings noticed you were troubled. It was the fourth doll, your younger brother, the one who always looks out for everyone. He called you and took you to his room.
He asked, "It's unusual for you to look so anxious. What's wrong, big brother?"
"Ugo..." He invited you to sit on his bed, and then his hand patted your back. You're grateful that he's there for you. "I apologize. I seem to have caused you worry."
"No, tell me what's bothering you. We're all family here," he says, offering you a smile. Was the duty of being the oldest doll perhaps getting into you? You looked so lonely. Are you, by any chance, saddened that everyone can go outside except you?
You looked down on your lap. "Do you think I can be as strong as everyone? Do you think... I can fight alongside you all one day?"
"What are you saying? You're already strong! If there's anyone here of us siblings who can do many amazing things, it's you! You can read well, write well, clean well, and many more." He places his hand on your shoulder and draws you closer to him. "Hey, don't think such things, okay? Just like what Master said, you shouldn't force yourself. I know you can endure the sun one day. Before then, we’ll be patient with you.”
"But... what if that time comes when Master is... no longer here?"
His eyes widened at your question. Right. You're all dolls and immortals. What happens after your creator passes away?
“Then be brave and go out as soon as possible,” he said firmly. “And if the time ever comes where she's no longer with us, we'll still remain one big family. We can look after ourselves. Then we will make Mother proud of us in heaven.”
His words surprised you. Ugo would’ve been better off being the oldest…
You gave him a small smile. "Right... We're all family here. Thank you, Ugo. Really."
"It's no problem, big brother. If there's more trouble that you can't tell Master and the others, I'm always here!"
Since then, you have kept trying your best to adapt to the sun. Everyone was astonished by you, but Ugo was proud. You gradually increase your tolerance until, after a few months, you can withstand it for an hour! It was only a brief period, yet everyone was proud of you. In the end, you believed the sun's warmth was pleasant. It's simply that a part of you wants to avoid it. You have no idea why, but you intend to break it.
As for the combat skills, you ended up giving up on them. You’re too terrified to consider the possibility that your body will break. But maybe you'll ask for your master's help once you've accomplished your goal of remaining out in the sun for a day. If she had given you battle skills when she created you, you wouldn't be bothered. You're not blaming her, however. You were already appreciative of how she created you.
You once asked her if you could help her with her experiments, but she declined. You weren't sure why, but it made you believe you just weren't good enough to assist her. So you simply performed housework. It was a little lonely at first, but once everyone arrived at the table at the end of the day, it made you happy to be with them, eating together while everyone talked about their day. Such a big family you all are, indeed.
Yet there's always this feeling inside you that makes you feel like you're an outsider. Everyone was laughing and smilling... While you feel something empty inside you. You don't understand why, but it's been something you've been dealing with since your birth. You never told anyone, though, and you don't plan to. You felt obliged to keep it to yourself, frightened of the chance that everyone would stare at you strangely and call you a freak. That is the last thing you want. To be kicked out by your family.
—
Five years went by. It has already been 12 years since you woke up for the first time. You've finally been able to resist the sun for an entire day. While everyone trains to grow stronger, you continue to do the housekeeping. It felt like you were more of a servant than a family member, but you paid no mind to it. As long as you get to see them at the end of the day, that's enough for you.
Matryoshka stopped creating dolls three years ago. She has made a total of 21 dolls now. You wonder, why 21? Why not 20? Except for you, everyone was taken to train their strength. It truly feels like you're not part of the family.
During those 12 years, you did nothing but stay inside the mansion. You continue to read the hundreds of books in the library. You stumbled upon a book with the story of a traveler. It was a nine-book series, and you took your time with the story. It moved you. You aspired to be like the man in the novel, exploring new places and making friendships all over the world. But the main character was a powerful man, unlike you, so you gave up on the idea. Besides, you'd rather be with your family and remain by their side till the end. Yes, that's all that matters to you.
You were cleaning the hallway when you heard a ring at the door. Could it be that one of your siblings returned from the city? You carefully opened it and took a peek. It was Kano, the second doll. She returned from her grocery trip.
She took out a letter from the bag and handed it to you. "It's for Master."
"Thank you for your hard work, Kano." You took it, and she only nodded before going into the kitchen. You then went to your master room and knocked on the door.
“Master, a letter has been delivered to you."
After a moment, you see the door open. She gave you a quick smile. "Thank you."
You nodded and moved out of the way to allow her to leave her room.
“I'll be in the basement and head out to the city later. I wouldn’t be able to join everyone for supper and might return tomorrow.”
You bowed your head. "Understood. We'll protect the house, Master."
"Protect each other as well," she adds, patting your head.
…
"Lady Egeria, I have bought the supplies."
"Good. We can use them for the war..."
"Something wrong, my lady?" Matryoshka raised her eyebrows.
"It's nothing... I'm simply worried for everyone." She sighed, shifting her eyes to her. “In any case, shouldn't you be more concerned? He... He has no battle experience. He's not allowed to join us.”
"I don't intend to bring him to the war, but I will create a barrier to protect him and the mansion," she responds.
Egeria says in a concerned tone, "I see... He'll be all alone then."
"... Yes." She looked at the floor before using her power to summon a small box. The Archon stared at it, curious.
"Lady Egeria, I have a request I would like you to do..." Her gaze gradually returned to meet hers. She said hesitantly, "If there's a chance that I won't be able to return..."
The god's eyes widened as she recognized what she was asking for.
"Please... I would like you to give this to him in my stead, if you don't mind."
“This is... If I recall correctly, his 13th birthday is approaching soon.” The other woman nods in response. “Very well. I'll hand it to him.”
She then handed the box to her. Egeria studied it before putting it in her cabinet. Matryoshka had a smile on her face. She was relieved that at least her present could be delivered to you. That being said, this doesn’t make her give up. She'll make certain to survive and give it to you herself. Once the war is over, she's determined to teach you more and even ask you to call her your mother. Yes, that's right. It's still just the beginning. You will all continue to be one big family.
“I have a request for you as well.” The archon turned to face her again. “Survive. Live and continue your life with your children. That is my request to you, Matryoshka.”
She was stunned, but then her lips curled up and she bowed her head. "Understood, my lady."
—
“I ended up having to open the box again to deliver this message to you. I was originally planning to give you only two items, but I realized that would be selfish of me. I needed to tell you my past…”
She stopped using her abilities to move the little dolls. The backstory appears to have ended already.
“Did you have any difficulties opening the box? I realized there wasn't a lock and ended up adding one. But my power still remains, right? It should have helped you open the box. The source of it is the mark I gave on your wrist. As I had previously said, I planted a crystal in you. It should be able to assist you in the future, and maybe you can use the cryo element!”
Paimon and Aether's gaze wandered to your hand for a moment, but you continued to focus on your mother. So that's why you feel cold when you visit the desert. You're unsure if you can do it. It's not a vision, but it's worth a shot later.
“I'm sorry... I died. I'm really sorry.” Her eyes started to become teary, and she attempted to keep her smile but was unsuccessful. “Twelve years and I never told you anything... I could’ve told you this right now, but I'm too busy preparing for the war. It's already near… And I really want to tell you everything in person too.”
Her eyes began to shed tears. "I'm such a bad mother..."
You shake your head as you cry, too. "No..."
A knock can be heard on the recording. "Master, dinner is ready." It was your voice.
“Ah, y-yes! I'll be there!” She sighed as she looked back at the recorder. “Haha... You ended up interrupting me. But don't worry; I'm not mad. I was already thinking that it was time to wrap things up. I've already spent much of my power on this record.”
You felt your chest tighten as you comprehended that she was going to end the record soon. You crept closer to the mirror and watched more closely. Your hand touches the glass while the other continues clutching the box.
Matryoshka didn't say anything for a few seconds, still trying to find the words to end the record. Everyone waited for her to speak again. Other than the sound of the rain outside, it was quiet.
You then heard her utter your name. “Thank you... for everything. Thank you for being with me when I was at my worst... I know you weren't still alive then, but your presence... It’s what motivated me to keep going.”
"Mother..."
“I'm sorry... I couldn't be there with you anymore. We all left you alone. I ended up letting your siblings die... I'm really sorry. I couldn't teach you anything anymore. I wouldn't be able to give you new outfits. We wouldn't have any more family bonding... We're sorry for leaving you all alone.”
Your eyesight blurred as tears flooded your eyes. You wiped them off to see her clearly, not wanting her to look hazy in the final seconds of the recording.
“Ah, I need to eat dinner with you all now. This might be the last supper... But even if I do die, I want you to know that I didn’t give up fighting to survive so that I can live with you until I die of old age. That I wanted my last moments to lay in bed while you, my children, stay beside me as I fall asleep in a forever slumber…”
She took a deep breath and said your name for the last time.
"My friend, my companion, my son... I love you."
And just like that, her reflection faded. The mirror is now reflecting itself, with you crying and the others in the back.
You continue to let your tears out, along with the rain, as you clench the box against your chest. Aether and Paimon went beside you, trying to comfort you. The other two exchanged glances before Wanderer approached and hugged you in front. Your grasp on the box lessened as your arms tightened around him, as if you were holding on for dear life.
"Mother... Mother..."
You had no idea your mother had been through so much. You perceive her as someone who has always been a huge deal since the beginning. However, she had it tough from the start. You were unaware you had returned to her homeland when you were at Snezhnaya. She didn't mention having another sibling or her parents' other family, so you couldn't meet the descendants by now. They're not likely to know your mother anyway. Furthermore, you have no intention of returning there. The fatui still knows you.
You continued to weep, but after a few minutes, you calmed. Wanderer stopped embracing you and backed away to give you space. Your hands wiped away your tears before returning your attention to the box. You opened it again to see the pin she gave you. It was beautiful, you thought. You looked back at the folded paper again and picked it up. When you unfold it, what lies make you tear up again. This time, however, you were smiling.
It was a portrait of you and your family.
Right, you remembered her hiring an artist back then to draw you all. It took hours to complete because there were so many of you. She commented in the end that her back had become stiff. Those were good times.
Your hand caresses the picture. It made you feel relieved that you still remembered what everyone looked like. She was sitting in the center, with everyone around her. You see yourself next to her. Ah, you look so lifeless there. There were no emotions expressed or anything. You wish you had smiled at that moment.
You pressed the paper near your left chest, where human hearts are located. If only you had said a proper farewell to them, you wouldn't have any regrets… They had already passed away, and you're the only one left. But this didn't make you dishearted.
You'll live for them.
You put the photo back in the box and grabbed the pin again. It displayed your favorite flower and a crystal fly that you liked. After placing the box down, you stood up and looked at the mirror, which had not shrunk yet. You place the headpin on yourself.
"Thank you for this gift, mother…”
Suddenly, there was a cool breeze blowing through the room. Everybody was taken by surprise. Paimon instantly hid behind Aether, while Wanderer and Neuvillette's eyes searched for what had caused it. It just took a few seconds until it came to a stop. The room had turned cold, much like the snow from Snezhnaya.
There, above you, slowly descends a cryo vision.
Your hand holds the glowing orb. The gods have blessed you.
"A vision!" Paimon exclaimed. She glanced at her companion. “This is the third time we saw someone receiving visions yet Paimons still gets the chills!”
"Congratulations on your vision," Neuvillette says.
Your eyes inspected the orb before looking at Wanderer. He didn't say anything, only crossing his arms around his chest. You're happy that you finally received a vision. It's the same element as your mother, too. It made you feel closer to her. Maybe you can take inspiration from her power and make threads as well. It will be easier to face opponents with this. You're very excited to master it and fight alongside Wanderer.
“Now that he finally knew Matryoshka's story and even gained his own vision, he can now move on and have a new start to his life!” The white haired girl says.
Aether nods his head. "I'm glad it turned out well for you."
"Thank you, everyone..." You looked back at the Iudex. "Really, thank you, Sir Neuvillette. Thank you for taking care of the gift."
“It’s no problem. Perhaps your mother didn't anticipate Egeria to die during the war. I'm glad I was able to find the box in her cabinet.”
You nodded slowly before touching the mirror, and it shrank. You picked it up along with the box. Your eyes are focused on the items as you slowly walk out.
"Huh? Where are you goi—"
Paimon was interrupted by Aether, who shushed her. “Let's leave him alone for the time being. I'm sure he's still processing everything that happened.”
Wanderer bowed to the Hydro Dragon before leaving to follow you. Paimon shrugged. "Well, there they both go... “
"Thank you for your help, Neuvillette," the blonde boy said.
"It's my pleasure. I'm glad to finally find the owner of the box. I hope his new journey will be full of pleasantness."
…
Wanderer exited the building, seeing that the rain had subsided. He looked to his right and noticed you walking to the building's corner. He didn't approach you and was just watching you from afar.
As soon as you settled at the corner, you opened the box again and looked at the picture. Just looking at it makes you remember your daily life back then… Even if Matryoshka had survived the war, she wouldn’t be with you right now. But at the very least, you'll get to watch her grow old and die peacefully, right? It's far preferable.
You continue to stare at it before replaying the record. Even if she repeats herself, you're just happy to hear her voice again. Oh, you wish your siblings were included as well. You missed hearing their voices...
Before you knew it, it was already getting dark. You felt Wanderer's hand on your shoulder, attempting to snap you back. He looks at you with worry. Your eyes looked lifeless, as you had already watched the recorder seven times. It brings back memories of when he met you in your ruined mansion.
He helped you stand up again and he held your hand to guide you. Wanderer asked one of the locals to point out one of their hotels. After a few minutes of walking, you reach one of the buildings. He talked to one of the workers at the counter while you stood behind him.
The worker noticed you were feeling down. "Umm... is your friend unwell, sir?"
"It's nothing. He just dropped the cake we bought earlier," he lied, not wanting to engage in conversation.
But before they could go, the lady spoke once more. “I don't remember ever seeing you two before. Are you two here on a visit by any chance?”
“Yes.”
"Ah, then..." She went to grab something before returning. She handed him a box containing sliced cakes. “Have these. It's free of charge! I hope you two will enjoy your stay here in Fontaine and your friend will feel better now!”
Wanderer took it and glanced at the pastries. Yeah, he's not eating it.
"Have a good night, you two!" the worker says as you both head to your room.
Once you entered the room, you could see two beds. Wanderer was glad there were two so he could give you space tonight. He let go of your hand and placed the box on the bedstand.
"Sleep here. You're already tired for today," he told you.
You didn't say anything and simply sat on your bed. Your eyes continue to stare at the box. You were about to open it again when he snatched it from you and placed it alongside the pastries.
"Stop. Go and sleep, you idiot."
You stare blankly before taking off your shoes and resting down on your bed. Instead of your typical sleeping position, you faced sideways and hugged a pillow. You closed your eyes.
Wanderer was surprised by that. He sat in his bed, watching you. He wasn't expecting you to have such a great life back then because everything you told him was from your perspective.
He takes it back. You're different from him.
But judging by how you were back then, it reminds him of his past self—the Kabukimono. So innocent and didn't understand emotions despite already feeling them. You both were naive back then.
He glances out the window and stares at the moon. Soon later, he too fell asleep. And that marks the first day. Only four days left before going back to Sumeru.
—
You woke up, feeling numb. It was still dark. You checked the clock, and it marks at 3:20 a.m. Wanderer was still asleep, so you took advantage of the opportunity to pick up the box again and repeat the recording. But when you opened the box, you found cakes instead.
Your head tilts. "Hmm...?"
You were so spaced out earlier that you didn't know the worker gave it to you two.
They look so delicious… You know Wanderer doesn't eat sweets, so you assumed it was for you. Did he buy it for you, by chance? You should thank him later.
You dismissed the idea of watching the recorder since it would disturb his sleep. You planned to look at the photo instead, but it was too dark. In the end, you continue to eat the cakes as you become preoccupied with your thoughts, visualizing the recorder.
Before you knew it, it was already 6 in the morning. Wanderer woke up and saw you sitting with your back facing him. He soon sat down too.
"Good morning." He rubs his eyes.
He glances at you, puzzled that you didn't react. He approached you to look at your face, only to discover that you were a complete mess. Your hair is all over your cheeks, and your eyebags are clearly visible. Your eyes were also red, obviously from crying. There are also crumbs in your mouth.
"What the fuck."
You merely made a small, quiet noise in response to him. He then pinched your cheeks, and you whined.
"Stop it! Clear your mind, you idjit!" he scolds you.
You made small, sad noises as he pinched you. "Mother..."
"Shut it. Now clean yourself up. We have a vacation to do." He took his hands off your cheek and walked back to clean his bed.
…
Paimon and Aether stare at you with bewilderment as they see your current state.
The floating companion cleared her throat. "C'mon now, you're both here to visit Fontaine! Cheer up!"
You had already requested Wanderer to visit your wrecked house, but he declined. He needs you to be in the right state of mind. Who knows what could be lurking there now? You'll be careless and injure yourself, so for now, you'll spend the day in the city. Moreover, you promised a treat to thank them.
The four of you enjoy breakfast at Hotel Debord. Aether and, especially, Paimon ate a lot, whereas you and Wanderer only sipped tea. You were already full from the cake anyway. Following that, you all strolled around the stores and happened to come across the Chioriya Boutique. You and Wanderer ended up meeting the shop's owner. Chiori's work reminds you of your mother, while her demeanor reminds you of Wanderer.
You were going to ask her to sew you a new outfit because you had worn the current one while you and Wanderer were still on the Fatui. But Chiori prioritizes customers who arrive first, so you gave up, given that you'll be leaving in four days. Chiori then suggested that her friend Kirara could deliver it to you and that she'd simply take your measurements first. You were very thankful to her and paid her alongside the payment for Kirara's delivery service.
Once she took your measurements, you four visited the Beaumont workshop to purchase a new sword for you. After that, the four of you resumed your stroll, looking around shops for the whole day. You also paid for their lunch and dinner. They were concerned about taking so much of your mora, but you told them it was fine since you still have enough.
The third day, everyone went to the Opera Epiclese and watched Lyney and Lynette's magic show. You didn't initially have an opinion, but after witnessing it, you felt it was a fascinating experience. It piqued your interest in how the twins accomplished it. Did they use their visions? Was there a secret passage? Was the cat already in his hat from the beginning? When the show ended, everyone applauded.
Lyney intervened as you and the others exited the building. He talked to the traveler and his companion, thanking them for attending their show. The twins observed you and Wanderer and mentioned that they hadn't seen you two before. Paimon then introduced you to one another. Lyney seems delighted to meet you two, so he performed another magic trick by handing you both rainbow roses. Wanderer only rolled his eyes while you were in awe. You were genuinely curious about how he did that.
Lynette grew a little pouty, saying how he never handed her one. Lyney gives a small laugh and apologizes. In the afternoon, the twins decided to join everyone for lunch. After that, you four continue to stroll through the city.
For the fourth day, it was just you and Wanderer. You two began to explore and decided to dive underwater. You both left most of your clothes in a nearby residence so that you could swim swiftly. It was a new experience for you. There were numerous creatures that piqued your interest, particularly the blubberbeasts and leisurely otters. You find them cute. But it made you both cautious because you couldn’t use your visions underwater. You tried to create an ice shield for both of you but it didn’t last long, so you two only tried to ignore the ones that attacked and swim away.
But, just as you were about to return to the land and call it a day, you two were trapped by enemies. There were too many of them to flee without being injured. Both of you should’ve asked how the traveler managed to explore underwater and how he dealt with the sea creatures that attacked him. It was until the robotic, phony fish were destroyed. Someone rescued you two and brought you to the surface.
Once you three were out of the water, the savior took off his helmet. He was glad that you and Wanderer were unharmed. He then introduced himself as Freminet and began to explain how to fight underwater by searching for xenochromatic creatures. After a short talk, you both learned that he has a connection to the magician twins you met yesterday. You thanked him once more, and he waved goodbye as you both left and headed back to the city.
On the last day, you two went to the west slopes of Mont automnequi to visit your home again. When you entered the small cave, you were both on high alert. The last time Wanderer was here, his troops were only fighting slimes and armored crabs. Surprisingly, it remained the same. The two of you carefully entered the ruins. You arrived at your room, and it was barely recognizable. Everything was covered in vines.
Wanderer eyed the spot where he remembered you sitting. Nearly four years have passed since he encountered you. He was glad he discovered you and brought you with him. If he hadn't, you'd continue to stay here and maybe wither away over the years.
You both didn't stay for long because there was nothing to do or find. You merely walked around and entered each room. Still, nothing remained because most of it had been destroyed over the years. The ones that are still usable were taken to Snezhnaya by Scaramouche during his expedition here.
You bowed your head as you bid farewell to your home. When you returned to the surface, you both noticed a treasure hoarder running in your direction. Behind him, a blonde woman and two bodyguards are pursuing him. Just as you were about to catch him before he went by you two, he decided to go the other way.
Wanderer didn't want to help because it wasn't his business, but he can see you want to. Before he could use his ability to fly and catch the thief, you used your speed to approach the man and grab his coat. He was about to struggle back and escape, but you gripped his wrist firmly. He screamed in pain and began to apologize, pleading with you to stop. Originally, you intended to use your vision to freeze his legs, but you only obtained it and were concerned that it would hurt him or that you would be unable to undo it when he'd been tied.
The two bodyguards restrained him and tied his hands behind him. Wanderer had returned to your side before you realized it. Navia introduced herself as well as the two bodyguards. They thanked you for your assistance in capturing the man. She offered you both lunches as a token of appreciation.
As you were all on your way to Poisson, Wanderer leaned in to whisper in your ear and told you that he met Navia back when he took you to a clinic. Given that he had erased himself from the Irminsul, it made sense that Navia would not remember him.
It didn't take long until you arrived at the village. Shortly after, one of her men served you meals. She offered you her specialty, macaroons. Wanderer declined, so you just ate them for him. It was very tasty.
After the meal, you both return to the city to buy souvenirs. You didn't really want anything other than a new outfit and the sword you had already bought. Wanderer said he didn't want anything, so you simply bought him a box of tea and coffee. You'll brew them for him. As for Nahida, you were thinking of buying cakes tomorrow before you two leave. You also considered sending a gift to Neuvillette, so you asked Aether and Paimon what he liked. Unfortunately, it wasn't much help because the man simply enjoys water. So you bought an ornament with a water drop pattern. If he still doesn't like it, you got him a bottle of water as well.
For Aether and Paimon, you four meet up at the Hotel Debord again. You’re treating them for the last time. They, and by they, it’s Paimon, simply want a meal as a gift. You asked Aether what he wanted, but being the nice guy he is, he just asked for a meal as well. He was beginning to worry because you had treated them so many times. Especially Paimon, who eats a lot. You didn't mind at all, really. You and Wanderer still continue to only drink tea and coffee. You didn't even spend a million on this trip. Furthermore, this is insufficient to express gratitude for what they did back then. You owe them a lot for saving Scaramouche.
Once supper was done, you and Wanderer returned to the hotel. You'll be leaving tomorrow, so this will be your final visit to the building. As you were about to go to your rooms, the lady behind the counter called you two.
“I’m sorry for bothering you two, but one of the beds in your room was removed because it was broken…”
Wanderer raised his eyebrow. “Broken? Which one?”
“The one close to the door, sir.”
“Ah, that was broken?” you asked.
He turned his gaze towards you. “You knew? Why didn’t you say anything?”
“I didn’t think it was broken. I thought whatever was poking on my back was nothing…”
He pinched your cheek. “You idiot.”
“Ouch, ouch! Sorry! Besides, I wasn’t really bothered by it…”
The worker let out a small laugh before apologizing again. She informed you, "If you'd like, sir, we have one more free room."
"He can just sleep with me," Wanderer says.
"Huh? Is that acceptable for both of you?" the worker inquired.
You nod your head. Well, if he doesn't mind, you two can simply share the bed. It's big enough anyway.
The lady apologized again for their service and let you two go back to your room. As you arrived, you placed the stuff you had brought into the magic pocket Lyney had given you the other day. It looks a little empty without the other bed now.
Wanderer went to the bathroom first, so you just stared at the window. It was astonishing how a four-day period made you forget what you had felt before. Fontaine was truly a wonderful experience, and you can't believe you're already leaving tomorrow morning. You still want to stay to explore and learn more.
As time passed, it was time to go to sleep in order to have enough energy to cross the desert again. You hung up the towel you used to dry your hair and sat down on the mattress. Wanderer turned off the lights and sat down, too.
“This was a fun trip,” you said.
He stared you in the eyes for a moment before responding. “You know you can stay here if you want. I can see it in your eyes that you like being here.”
“That is true, but… I like being by your side more.”
His eyes widened before he looked away and scoffed. “Whatever. Just… If you want to explore around like that blondie, just go. I'm not stopping you.”
You gave him a nod before looking down at your hands on your lap. “Yes, I’ll think about it more…”
Wanderer then moved to lie down on the bed and you decided to do so as well. As you felt the mattress on your back, you looked up to the ceiling. While you were preoccupied with your thoughts, his eyes fixed on you until he was caught and turned away.
You shifted your body to face him. “Is there something wrong?”
“Nothing. Go to sleep already.”
You were confused by his sudden change of behavior, but you didn’t say anything. You did as he says, closing your eyes as you’re done for the day.
…
An hour had passed and he was still awake. This reminds him of the first time you slept with him. Now that he thinks about it, this is the third time. Almost four years had passed, and you had only slept together three times? To be fair, you both enjoyed your space. He prefers to be alone, which you respect, but if he wants to, you don't mind sleeping with him.
He observes you as you sleep. This was the second time he had seen you sleeping without being in your usual position. His hand gently held yours, looking at your wrist. He sees it again—number one. He truly envies you. If only his mother had loved him the way yours did. But even with a good life like yours, it still ended in tragedy. The world really is cruel. But at the very least… fate was a little kind to bring you two together. It's one of the few times he feels grateful.
Both of you have no need for rest, but seeing you exhausted and sleeping like this makes you look more human. Your mother embraced you without knowing you were capable of feeling human emotions. Will she abandon you if she finds out, just like Ei did to him? No. Your mother will love you regardless of your flaws. To her, you're the ideal child. There’s no point in dwelling on the past. Your mothers have still left you both. But that's fine. You have each other.
His hand moved to your cheek, carefully caressing you. This time, you're actually sleeping, which is good for him because he'd rather spend weeks in the desert overheating than you knowing this. He moved closer, and then, with a bit of hesitation, he pressed his lips on your forehead. He gently moved your head to his chest as his fingers brushed your hair behind. He still wants to stay in this position, so he'll just wake up later and move before you can wake up. He whispered your name and said good night before he closed his eyes.
—
You and Wanderer just exited the hotel. Paimon and Aether waved at you both. “Good morning!” The floating companion was already loud in the morning.
"Good morning, Aether and Paimon." You then hand them a paper bag. "Could I request you two to deliver this to Sir Neuvillette?"
"Oooh, what did you get him?" She questioned excitedly.
“It’s nothing much…”
“We’ll give this to him. You can leave it to us,” the blonde boy said.
"Ah, I still need to visit the Hotel Debord. Meet me at the entrance," you say as you begin to walk towards the building.
Paimon waves. "Don't be late!"
As you entered the building and approached the counter, the worker was already ready to hand you a box filled with several sorts of cakes. As you were preparing to pay her, a girl stood next to you, ordering a slice of cake. She spotted your pastries and was shocked by the amount that you bought.
"That's a lot of cakes!" She turned to look at you. "Are you eating them all by yourself?"
"No. They're souvenirs for my friend," you answered.
"Souvenir?" She glanced at you up and down. "Now that I think about it, I don't recall ever meeting you. Your fashion is almost identical to Fontaine's, so it was difficult to tell you were a visitor." She clapped her hands and apologized for assuming.
You shake your hand, telling her it was fine. Now when you look at her, she looks like a celebrity. She also reminds you a little like Wanderer. She was wearing black shorts and a hat like him.
“Ah, pardon me for not introducing myself. I’m Furina.”
Furina? Hmm… you felt like you heard that name before, but it didn’t ring the bell. You introduced yourself to her too.
"So, you're already leaving Fontaine? Did you take a matcha cake with you? I highly recommend it!"
The employee replied, "Yes, Lady Furina. We added three slices."
She became embarrassed, not expecting the worker to respond. It dawned on her that she was speaking to you as though you were close. She cleared her throat. "That's excellent. I hope you had a pleasant stay here."
You smiled. "I did. It was an unforgettable experience."
You then reached for your bag and bowed to her before saying goodbye. She also waved you farewell before taking her ordered slice of cake. After that, you get back together with the others, ride the elevator up, and board the aquabus. Your gaze is drawn to the city as you ride away.
Paimon looked at your bag and questioned. "Is this all you bought?""
"Yes. Besides, if I bought too much, it would be difficult to get back to Sumeru with them," you told her.
"That's true," she shrugged. "Anyway, good luck crossing through the desert again. That place is boiling hot!”
"He can just use his vision to cool themselves," Aether suggests.
“True…”
You glanced at Poisson as you passed by, then over to the other side, in the direction of your ruined house. When you reached the entrance, you and Wanderer exited the ride. The other two still intended to stay on Fontaine, so they couldn't accompany you back to Sumeru. You waved goodbye to them while Wanderer had already turned to get on the elevator.
"See you guys later!" Paimon waved, and so did Aether and the Melusine.
You entered the elevator with Wanderer. It's been five days since your previous ride here. The time passed so quickly. Wanderer looks at you and notices the sadness in your eyes. As you reached down and were about to ride the waverider, you looked up again and bowed for the last time.
"You like to bow a lot, don't you?"
You returned his gaze, smiling slightly. "It's my way to show gratitude."
He scoffed. “Just get in here. I want to go back soon.”
Chuckling, you said, "Yes, sir.”
The two of you rode the boat and landed back in the desert. You used your power to keep the cakes cool so they wouldn't spoil. This time on your journey, it was peaceful now that it’s just you two. You and Wanderer didn't even speak much.
It didn't take 24 hours for the two of you to get back to the city. You both kept going until it was almost midnight. As you two opened the door, Nahida greeted you both.
“Welcome back. Did you two not rest on your way here?”
"It's fine, Lesser Lord Kusanali." You then hand her the cakes you purchased for her. "This is for you. I cool them down and they should be good."
Nahida's eyes sparkle with joy as she accepts the gift. "Thank you... Wait, cool?"
You then pulled out your cryo vision from your pocket and showed it to her. She clasped her hands, congratulating you on your vision.
“And what about you? Did you take photos as I requested?” She turned her attention to the other.
"Not much." He gives her the kamera back.
“I’ll be taking a look at these. You two should rest. It’s already late.”
“Thank you, Lesser Lord Kusanali. Make sure not to eat the cakes in one go," you advised.
She scratched her head and laughed a little. "I will."
—
“Now!”
You dashed in, using your cryo power to strike the core of the Aeonblight Drake. As soon as it hit, it froze. It then dropped to the ground and shattered. After checking that everything is now safe, Aether approached you and gave you a high five.
“You two make good teamwork!” She cheered and came out of the bushes. "In only seven weeks, you have already mastered your vision!"
Yes. It's been seven weeks since you and Wanderer returned to Sumeru. You immediately resume training with your vision upon your return. Nothing much happened; you continued to follow the usual schedule, such as completing your commissions and returning to the Surasthana of Sanctuary at night.
Wanderer would sometimes tutor you when he finished his thesis. As you continue to train with him, your sword skills improve in ways that benefit both your partner and yourself. You don't really like being the one in charge and prefer to be the one who provides support, but you've decided to train yourself more so you don't become used to relying on others.
Today, you decided to join Aether and Paimon's commission. As the day comes to a close, the three of you head back to the city to collect your awards. You wonder why the two of them returned to Sumeru suddenly.
"Why are you both back here in Sumeru?"
"We decided to stay here for a bit before going back to Liyue tomorrow!" Paimon replies to you.
“Liyue?”
“Yup, yup! Lantern Rite is coming soon and we wouldn’t wanna miss that!”
Aether noticed your confusion and explained, "Lantern Rite is a Liyue festival. They held it every year around this time.
“Yeah. Last year, Xinyan and Hu Tao performed a song together!”
“They’re our friends in Liyue,” Aether adds.
Lantern Rite… You wished to experience it.
After you had claimed your rewards, everyone went to Lambad's Tavern to treat yourselves. You fixed your gaze on the duo while they ate and spoke. As Paimon was ready to respond to the other man, you interrupted her by asking them a question.
“Aether, you used to travel with your sibling, right? How did you feel while you were alone?”
Aether didn't expect you to ask that at random. Then he answered, "It was lonely, but... It wasn't long before I met Paimon."
"Then... if you never meet Paimon?"
He looked at his companion and wiped crumbs from her mouth with a tissue. “Without her, I'd struggle to understand Teyvat's language and explore without her guidance. Most importantly, it'll be lonely without her...”
“Aww, Aetheeeer!” Paimons hugs him.
"Is it... really lonely adventuring without a companion?" you inquired.
"Well, it depends on the person. If you want to be with one, then yes." He then glanced at you, startled. "Wait, why are you asking this?"
The floating girl asked. "Oooh, are you also planning to travel?"
You waved your hand. "N-No, no. I'm just curious."
“Really? Well, if you ever decide to, maybe we can cross paths!” She said excitedly.
The two of them continue their previous conversation while you remain silent and watch them, occupied with your thoughts.
As time passed, it was time to separate ways and return. But then someone approached you. A girl with cat characteristics.
"Hmm... A boy dressed in similar Fontaine fashion, hmm... Komaniya express delivery! Are you the person Chiori asked me to deliver this to?"
It was your first time seeing a cat lady with two tails. “Yes. Are you Chiori’s friend… umm, Kirara?”
"Oh! So she's mentioned my name to you before. Here. She hopes it's to your liking."
You held the box, but before she could walk away, you spoke again. "Miss Kirara—"
“Kirara will do!”
“... Kirara, could I ask you to deliver something to Miss Chiori?”
“You’re requesting a delivery? Yes, yes, please consider using our service!”
You could see her tail wagging in happiness. “Umm… What does she like?”
“Chiori? Hmm… I remember her mentioning she likes Inazuma desserts,” she replies.
Inazuma, huh? Well, that’s too difficult because you’re in Sumeru, so you decided to make Kirara tag along as you two went to Puspa cafe and bought two Padisarah puddings. You hand the other to Kirara and also hand her mora.
"Please have the other one. It must be exhausting to walk all the way here and then back there. And I'd like you to give this to Miss Chiori as a token of my appreciation."
"Woah! Really!? Thank you! And delivery is not an issue for me. I always use my power to get there as smoothly as possible!" She then took a bite of her treat.
"Thank you again. Take care on your way there," you said, bowing your head.
She thanked you again and said goodbye. You continue walking back to Surasthana of Sanctuary. You didn't see Nahida and assumed she was in her office. You went into you and Wanderer's room, then saw him lying on his bed. He noticed the box you were holding.
“And that’s?”
"I just got the delivery from Miss Chiori." You sat on your bed, staring at the box before placing it next to your bed.
He raised an eyebrow. "Not going to open it?"
"Kuni, are you free tomorrow?"
“You didn’t answer my question, but yes, I am.”
“Let’s have a date.”
His eyes widened, completely taken aback by what you said. Did you ask him out on a date? Like what couples do? Did you like him in that way!?
Your finger scratched your cheek and you broke your eye contract with him. “Ahaha… I’m just joking… but can we hang out tomorrow?”
After a few seconds, he recovered his composure and crossed his arms, slightly pouting. He's not sure if he's relieved that was a joke or not, but it certainly irritated him. "Sure…"
“Thank you.”
—
It was still early in the morning, so you brewed the last pack of coffee you bought from Fontaine. You pass the other cup to him. He checked the drink before taking a sip.
“Where are we going this time?” he asked.
You took a sip of your coffee before answering. "Can we go to the top of Vissudha Field's mountain?"
“All the way up there? You want to train there?”
"No. I simply want to enjoy the sights with you." You gave him a faint smile.
He observed you suspiciously before taking another sip. After that early morning, you two made your way to the mountain. You both took your time, fighting small opponents along the route and discussing your previous days when you weren't together. He talked about Nahida requiring him to write another essay the other day, how the other students are naive, and so on. His life is more tranquil now than when he was at the Fatui. You're happy to see him engage with other people and even perform human tasks. It’s good to see him in a peaceful state.
When you both arrived at the top of the mountain, it was nearly noon. You've both cleared the dangers, so you two could relax. Instead of entering the tower, you both went to the tiny area behind it, where there were two small chairs, a table and an umbrella. You two sat down to relax, and it wasn't long until some Aranaras paid you two a visit. You remembered seeing one for the first time and having to rub your eyes, wondering if you were malfunctioning because you thought vegetables were walking.
The Aranaras decided to send out a lot of flowers for you two. You were in the mood and encouraged him to make flower crowns for them. The little creatures seemed overjoyed as he accepted. You both continued your talk while doing so. Moments like this distract you from the awful moments.
Time moves rapidly with you, immortals. The sky drew pinkish as the sun was about to set. You'd already stopped making flower crowns, whereas the other still does. You look up at the sky while the silence from earlier persists. A gust of wind brushed against your hair.
“I had made my decision.”
His hands came to a halt before resuming his work. “And then?”
"I'd like to go on an adventure with you." You give him a determined smile, but it only lasts a moment before you glance away, staring at the grass.
“It’s what I want but… I know you’re still healing and Lesser Lord Kusanali still intends to keep you for a while. I’d wait for you, I really will, but…” You both made eye contact again, and you were smiling slightly. "I'm sorry… I really want to explore the world soon."
You averted your gaze again. "Besides, I've already troubled you enough. I can't afford to keep relying on you. And... I'm sure you have no desire to have a journey like me. I don't want to force you."
After a minute of silence, you took a deep breath and faced him again, this time with real motivation. "I will travel the whole world and once I come back, I'll surprise you by how much I’ve grown."
Wanderer gazed at you with a blank expression. It made you feel a little awkward. He returned his attention to the flowers and resumed his task. "Is that so?"
His lack of response surprised you. Did he… really find you annoying?
“Will you… not be sad that I won’t be you for a while?”
“How stupid. Just as you said, “a while.” You’ll come back to me.” He looked at you in the eyes. “Moreover, I’m glad you finally made this decision. Go. Pursue your dreams. Travel and see the world yourself.”
Your eyes widened and they became a little teary. He supports your decision.
Before you even noticed, he finished the flower crown and placed it on your head. He gave you a small smile, bringing his hand near your ear and brushing your hair behind it. His unexpected behavior caught you off guard.
"Just don't die and come back," he adds.
His response made you chuckle. “Understood.”
It's going to be lonely without him. You've grown accustomed to his presence, but now it's time to grow up and adapt to being alone. You've spent nearly four years by his side, and those years may seem small to you immortals, but they were dear to you. Time indeed does pass quickly. You'd be back in Sumeru before you even realized it. And tomorrow will arrive in a flash. So, at the very least, on this final day, you'll cherish your time with him, as it felt like time froze down when you felt his hand near your cheek.
A few years without him will be fine. You can come back to him and spend more than those four years. You'll impress him with how much you've grown up. And you could always use Kirara's services to deliver letters and other items to him and Nahida. You'll miss Sumeru for a while.
“Kuni, can I hold you…?”
“... Go ahead.”
He opens his arms, inviting you to embrace him. Your face lit up with a genuine smile as you leaned in and wrapped your arms around him. You held him tightly.
“I know I’ve said this many times, but… really, thank you for everything.”
He pats your head. “Don’t say it like you’re leaving forever.”
“Sorry, sorry…”
Later, you both stopped hugging and gave each other distance. "I assume you plan to return to Fontaine."
“Ah, I was considering visiting Liyue.”
“Liyue?”
You nod. "The other day, Aether and Paimon mentioned that Liyue's Lantern Rite will be coming soon. I'd like to see their lanterns."
You want to watch them with him too…
“Hmm… If they soar high enough, I might be able to see them from here.”
You had a big smile on your face. With that, even though you're not by each other's sides, it will feel like you're watching together.
You then remember something. “Ah, right. I wanted to ask you this, can you, umm… help me make a little doll, similar to the one you had in your pocket?”
He got embarrassed when you mentioned that. He wasn't aware that you knew. That small doll he kept with him was a replica of the one he had with the ill child.
"Buy the materials later. We'll get it done tonight."
That way, you’ll feel less lonely. It'll be as if he's still with you.
—
"Did you bring everything you need?" Nahida asked.
“Yes. Thank you for your hospitality, Lesser Lord Kusanali. I will be taking my leave now."
You didn't carry much with you; only your wallet, the family portrait, the mirror, and the little doll of Wanderer were in your pocket. You didn't need anything else.
You're already wearing the clothes Chiori sewed for you, as well as the pin your mother gave you. You even put the vision on you, unlike back before when you kept it in your pocket. The new attire pleased you partly because it reminded you of the clothes your mother made back then. You were really grateful for Chiori.
She gestured for you to kneel down. You did, and she patted your head. "Be safe. You're always welcome to return here."
“Thank you… Please take care of Kuni.”
“Hey, I’m not a kid.” He crossed his arms.
Nahida chuckled and waved you goodbye as you and Wanderer exited the Sanctuary of Surasthana. Wanderer insisted on accompanying you to the bridge. As you were on your way, some of the students from the Akademiya waved at him.
“You’ve become popular.”
“It all started with assisting merely one student. How foolish.” He gripped his hat.
It wasn't long before you two reached the bridge. Abruptly, he grasped your hand, preventing you from continuing. He refused to look at you.
“You better send me letters.”
“I will.”
“Don’t push yourself. Come back if you’re tired.”
“I know.”
“Be careful when you encounter Fatuis.”
“Understood.”
“Don’t get yourself arrested.”
“I’m not killing anyone...”
“And lastly…” He looks at you in the eyes and gives you a faint smile. “Take care...”
You nodded and walked a few steps before turning around to face him again. He stands there, arms crossed on his chest, raising an eyebrow when he sees you turning around again.
You waved your hand. “See you later, Kuni.”
He looked at you for a few seconds before returning the wave. He called out your name. "Later."
You don't have to say goodbye.
No matter how many years it’ll take for you to travel around Teyvat, he knows you will eventually return to him.
