Work Text:
Eddie watches Maddie and chimney swaying side to side as the evening slowed down and there were only a few people left, mostly couples swaying to the slow music flowing through the palpable yet comfortable silence. He’d had a date to the wedding up until a week ago, it wasn't a big thing ‘they wanted different things’ as she had so gracefully put before leaving. He didn't mind though he got to spend the wedding with his family and that was good, better even. He never quite got past the feeling Marisol was never going to be important enough in his head and that wasn't fair to her.
Eddie looks around the space at the remaining guests, wondering if maybe it was time he left too. Until he spots Buck in a far off corner of the venue looking into the distance, seemingly peaceful looking, he wasn't actually sure what buck was feeling; he'd never seen him like that, so calm. Especially after the chaos that was caused at the wedding that landed Eddie with no shirt and covered in dirt, although Buck got the worst of it.
“Well you lucked out, right? you were so worried about the speech,” Eddie says as he makes his way up to Buck. Buck turns and smiles at him “but you didn't even have to do it,” Eddie says standing next to him leaning against the wooden fence.
“I spent all night rewriting it,” Buck says, blowing out a breath “and not going to lie. I was kind of looking forward to it, I got the whole thing down to two minutes,” Buck ducks his head slightly, a mix of embarrassment and disappointment. Throughout the chaos of the wedding, the speeches had been slightly ditched in efforts to save the day.
“I’d like to hear it,” Eddie says instantaneously, shrugging up at his partner.
“ah come on,” Buck mocks rolling his eyes
“Yeah, why not?” Eddie shrugs again, smiling brightly
“Really?” buck turns his body towards him, half a smile on his face
“As long as it's under two minutes,” Eddie tells him, raising an eyebrow, as Buck reaches into his inside pocket for the small crumpled piece of paper.
“Okay,” Buck says sneaking one last look at Eddie before focusing on the piece of paper before him “Dearly beloved, we are gathered here to witness and celebrate the union of Maddie Buckley and Howard ‘Chimney’ Han. Maddie and Chimney met each other at completely different times in their lives, both weren’t dealt the best cards in life and yet they were still positive and loving and caring. They were best friends and partners before becoming brilliant parents. I always thought that a partnership is a lot like marriage. you fight, then you make up but at the end of the day you always have each other's backs and if you had to you'd take a bullet for each other,” Eddie’s breath hitched as he rearranges his stance in attempts to focus on something else and ignore the burning in his chest “And a bond like that, never goes away,”
Eddie’s not sure if he is breathing at all, until he very audibly sniffs. That of which gets Bucks attention removing the piece of paper from his line of vision and focusing on Eddie who is attempting to hide the wetness on his pink cheek.
“Wait,” he tries to see more of Eddie's face “Wait a second, are you crying?” he smirks gently, turning Eddie towards himself. Eddie’s face is bashful, both cheeks pink and getting pinker by the second.
“No i don't cry at weddings,” Eddie moves to buck initial stance looking out into the distance leaning against the fence “if i was it's because i know how they end up,” he jokes mildly about his own marriage.
“Uh huh” Buck says, rolling his eyes again and pulling a handkerchief out of his pocket “You never cry huh?” lightly dabbing at the wet spots under Eddie’s eyes, although Eddie's smile falters at this act it doesn't disappear he makes no effort to stop him. They were closer to one another than he expected. It felt like if he made any attempt to move he would break something incredibly delicate but yet more intense than anything in his life.
“That's better,” Bucks says, his voice low and intimate as if it was a private show only for Eddie. But he turns away and he rips a tiny hole in that bubble that Eddie isn't willing to lose just yet so he moves with him ever so slightly maintaining the closeness.
“I'll spare you the rest, it's kind of hokey anyway,” Buck smirks to himself, pocketing the piece of paper once again. And he is just there in front of him alone, so still, so all consuming. He just wants to reach out and touch him ground himself from the spinning in his head. So he does.
“Evan.” it’s barely there, a request, a question wrapped in the only thing that was ever this important to him at this moment.
“What?”
Eddie places his hand on the closest part of the buck, on top of his beating heart feeling it race under his finger tips. But it wasn't enough, as he looked up to the blue eyes watching him his head was spinning even more. Everything else was shut out, everything else stopped while they were here at this moment. Overcome by the urge to become impossibly close to him, his hand slid from his chest to the side of his face, leaning up and placing his lips so delicately on Buck’s.
And this here is good, is perfect this moment in time despite everything else and everyone else. Everything that happened somehow led them here and how good it was.
