Viserys never named rhaenyra heir. Instead after Aemmas death he decided to marry rhaenyra to daemon and announced it to the council. During this daemon is at stepstones.
However while daemon was away Criston and rhaenyra targaryan have managed to get very close with each other.
Rhaenyra believes that Criston is her first love.
So when Cole hears that she is to be married he is devastated. Finally daemon returns to king's landing. The night before their wedding criston works up the courage and tells rhaenyra to wait for him in one of maegors tunnels.
Rhaenyra being the spoiled princess she is accepts the offer as she believes that cole is the man of her dreams.
But when the time comes Criston gets scared of being caught and punished for breaking his oath and doesn't show up. Mean while rhaenyra spends the entire night waiting for him down in the tunnels in the cold.
In the morning, viserys walks rhaenyra down the aisle and she and Daemon are married. Daemon is ecstatic and he's drinking, dancing and having the time of his life knowing he's going to be King. He's also very happy to be marrying the realm's delight.
Rhaenyra is heartbroken and avoids Criston the entire night . When the time comes for bedding Criston starts panicking and regretting his prior decision. It's too late and rhaenyra enters the chamber with Daemon.
So, Criston has to stand guard outside her door and has to hear her screams and whimpers the entire night.
