Chapter Text
As Maya entered their shared apartment, a sense of relief washed over her. After a long day of training at the fire academy, coming home to Carina was like a breath of fresh air. She tossed her bag onto the couch, feeling the weight of the day slowly lift from her shoulders.
With a smile on her face, Maya made her way into the kitchen.
"Babe, are you home?" Maya called out.
"In the kitchen," Carina replied, sitting at the table surrounded by medical books.
As Maya entered the kitchen, she couldn't help but grin as she wrapped her arms around Carina, pulling her close. "Hey, there. I missed you," she said, pressing a kiss to Carina's lips.
"I missed you too," Carina replied, returning the kiss with equal affection. "Are you excited for tonight."
"A night out with our friends and me getting to show off my sexy girlfriend. How could I not be." Maya smiled before leaning back in for another kiss.
Carina rolled her eyes but smiled pulling Maya back down for another kiss.
***********
With laughter ringing in their ears and a slight buzz from the drinks they shared with friends, Maya and Carina found themselves caught in a playful banter, their eyes exchanging silent messages filled with longing and desire.
As the night wore on, Maya's gaze lingered on Carina, a silent invitation that Carina couldn't resist. With a mischievous smile, Carina quickly announced their departure to the group, eliciting a chorus of cat calls and cheering from their friends.
Without hesitation, Carina took Maya's hand in hers, leading her out of the bar and into the cool night air. Their friends' playful teasing faded into the background as Maya and Carina walked hand in hand, their hearts racing with anticipation.
The instant they were behind their bedroom door, their deep passion and chemistry carried them through several rounds throughout the night, until ultimately, tiredness claimed them both.
They were still in bed at noon when someone knocked on the door. As she rolled off Carina, Maya groaned. Her body pleasantly ached from the events of the previous evening, and she wanted to stay in bed beside her girlfriend.
"Whose at the door?"
"I don't know, but I hope they go away."
Maya got up to answer the door when the knocking persisted.
As Maya opened the door, her heart skipped a beat at the sight of her father standing before her. Shock and confusion washed over her.
"Dad?" Maya uttered, her voice barely above a whisper, her mind reeling with a whirlwind of emotions. It had been almost a year since she last seen or talked to her father.
Her father's expression was unreadable, his features tense as he took in the sight of Maya standing before him, disheveled and clearly caught off guard.
"Maya," her father said, his voice tight with emotion.
As Carina emerged from the bedroom in her robe,"Maya, who's at the door?" Her eyes widened in surprise at the sight of Maya's father standing at the door. Sensing Maya's shock and discomfort, Carina's heart ached with empathy, knowing all too well the painful history between Maya and her father.
Maya's mind raced, grappling with the sudden intrusion of her past into her present reality. She knew she needed to handle the situation delicately, especially with Carina by her side, who understood the depth of her pain and the complexity of their relationship.
Taking a deep breath, Maya turned to Carina, her eyes silently pleading for understanding. She knew she wasn't ready to reveal the full extent of their relationship to her father, but she also couldn't bear to keep Carina in the dark any longer.
"Dad, this is..." Maya's voice trailed off, uncertainty clouding her thoughts as she struggled to find the right words.
Carina's hand twitched, a silent gesture of support and solidarity, but she refrained from reaching out, sensing the tension in the air. She knew Maya needed her strength now more than ever, and she was determined to be there for her, no matter what.
“So the rumors are true! You're a fucking dyke!” Lane yelled.
As Lane's words cut through the air like knives, Maya felt herself recoiling, the familiar sting of her father's harsh words sending a shiver down her spine. She fought to hold back tears, her body tense with fear and anger.
“EXCUSE ME! You can not talk to her that way!” Carina moved to intervene, Maya instinctively stepped in front of her, a silent plea for her safety echoing in her eyes. She couldn't bear the thought of her father hurting Carina.
"Carina, no," Maya whispered, her voice trembling with emotion. "I got this."
Carina's heart ached at the sight of Maya's pain, but she nodded reluctantly, knowing that Maya needed to confront her father on her own terms. With a heavy heart, she retreated back behind Maya, her mind racing with worry and frustration.
“Maya, you're coming home right now! Get your ass in the truck!" Lane reached out grabbing Maya's arm.
"I need to get dressed."Lane's grip on Maya's arm tightened, "Hurry the fuck up," his words dripping with venom as he demanded her compliance.
With a resigned sigh, Maya along with Carina walked back towards the bedroom. "You don't have to go with him, Bambina. We can call the police. Please don't leave with him; I'm afraid for you." Carina was terrified for her girlfriend.
"If I don't go with him, it will be worse. I'll call you later, I promise."
Tears welled in Carina's eyes as she listened to Maya's words, her heart aching with fear and uncertainty. She didn't want to let Maya go, to watch her walk away into the arms of the man who had caused her so much pain.
But as Maya pulled her into a tight embrace, Carina felt a sense of resignation wash over her. She knew she couldn't stop Maya from leaving, couldn't protect her from the demons of her past. All she could do was hold onto this moment, this fleeting embrace, and pray that Maya would return to her safely.
"I love you, Maya," Carina whispered, her voice choked with emotion as she held onto her girlfriend with all the strength she had. "Please be safe."
Maya pressed a tender kiss to Carina's lips, her heart heavy with the weight of their parting. "I love you too, Carina," she murmured, her voice filled with a mixture of sadness and determination.

When she walked into the house, she saw her brother first, who despite being close when they were younger grew up to be just like their father. She knew she wouldn't find any support with him. Then she looked at her mom, who looked small, and not one to speak up especially against her father or brother.
Maya swallowed hard before wiping her suddenly damp palms on the side of her pants.
“How long has this been going on?” Her father asked. Seemingly already cross and irritated at the situation. “How could you bring such shame to our family? I called in some favors and found out that girl you're with is a dirty immigrant.”
Carina being called "that girl" and a "dirty immigrant" made Maya wince. She was deserving of being called by her name since she was so much more than that.
Carina's name hung in the air, a symbol of Maya's defiance and her unwavering love for the woman who had captured her heart. Despite her father's attempts to diminish her relationship, Maya refused to let Carina be reduced to nothing more than a derogatory label.
"Carina. Her name is Carina, and she's my girlfriend and I love her, and she is my future," Maya declared, her voice trembling with emotion but firm with conviction. "I am allowed to love whoever I want."
But her father's rage only seemed to intensify, his words laced with venom as he hurled insults and accusations at her. Maya's resolve wavered for a moment, her chest tightening with the weight of his disappointment and disapproval.
But then she remembered Carina's love, the warmth of her embrace and the strength of her support. With renewed determination, Maya squared her shoulders, meeting her father's gaze head-on.
"I have never been more disappointed in you," her father spat, his words like a slap in the face. "You were supposed to be an Olympic champion but now look at you."
Maya felt a surge of defiance rise within her, a flicker of anger igniting in her chest. She refused to let her father define her worth, to dictate the course of her life. With a steely resolve, she met his gaze with unwavering determination.
"I may not be what you wanted me to be, but I am proud of who I am," Maya declared, her voice ringing with defiance. "And I will not apologize for loving Carina."
As Maya stood there, grappling with the weight of her father's disdain and the shattered remnants of her shattered childhood dreams, a fire ignited within her. The little girl who had longed for her father's approval and affection was overshadowed by the fierce woman she was becoming—a woman who refused to be silenced or controlled.
With each passing moment, Maya's anger grew, fueling her resolve to assert her independence and reclaim her autonomy. She refused to be shackled by her father's expectations or confined to the narrow path he had carved out for her. She was determined to forge her own destiny, to follow her heart wherever it may lead.
Straightening her spine and lifting her head high, Maya met her father's icy gaze with steely determination. She would not allow herself to be cowed by his cold indifference or his attempts to dictate the course of her life.
Maya turned to look at her brother. He had been nodding in agreement with their father the entire time. He approached his sister.
"Maya, you want us to accept you and your choices." Using air quotes, he added."You are poisoning this country and you shouldn't be allowed to do that! You shouldn't even be allowed to have kids."
Maya's heart sank as she listened to her brother's words, the shock and betrayal cutting deep into her soul. She couldn't believe that the brother she had once shared a close bond with could now stand before her, spewing hateful rhetoric and echoing their father's prejudices.
Tears welled in Maya's eyes as she struggled to comprehend the magnitude of her brother's transformation. The pain of his words pierced her heart, leaving her feeling wounded and alone.
"You're dad. You've become dad..no actually you're worse!" Maya's voice trembled with emotion as she confronted her brother, her words a bitter indictment of the man he had become. She couldn't fathom how he had strayed so far from the loving brother she had once known, how he had allowed himself to be consumed by hatred and bigotry.
In that moment, Maya felt a profound sense of loss, mourning not only the brother she had lost but also the shattered illusions of family and belonging.
But now, standing before him with tears streaming down her cheeks, Maya refused to remain silent any longer. She was done playing the role of the obedient daughter, done sacrificing her own happiness for the sake of her father's approval.
"This is MY life! Mine!" Maya asserted, her voice trembling with emotion but unwavering in its conviction. "I never wanted to be an Olympic medalist. That was your dream! It was your dream for me, and I blindly wanted to please you so bad that I did what I was told. But trying to please you I was slowly killing myself. I missed out on so much!"
Maya's words echoed through the room, each syllable weighted with the weight of years of resentment and frustration. She could feel the tension in the air, the palpable anger and disappointment radiating from her father like a suffocating blanket.
"Did you ever stop to think what I wanted for my own life?" Maya's voice cracked with emotion as she posed the question, her eyes burning with defiance as she dared her father to acknowledge the truth of her words.
"Get out." Lane's face was hard and unmoving.
The words echoed in Maya's ears, a cruel condemnation that tore at her very soul. She felt as though the ground had been ripped out from beneath her feet, leaving her adrift in a sea of uncertainty and pain.
“What?” Maya's voice trembled with disbelief, her mind struggling to comprehend the magnitude of her father's rejection.
“You are no longer a part of this family. You are no daughter or sister of ours. You disgust me.”
Maya felt as though she had been punched in the gut, the weight of her father's words crushing her spirit and shattering her sense of self-worth. She had spent her entire life trying to earn his love and approval, only to be cast aside like a worthless stranger.
With a steely resolve, Maya squared her shoulders and met her father's gaze head-on. “Fine,” she whispered, her voice barely above a whisper. “I don't need you. I don't need any of you.”
Before Maya stepped out of the house she looked back and addressed her mother. Despite the pain and betrayal she felt at her mother's silence, Maya couldn't help but cling to a flicker of hope that one day, her mother would find the courage to break free from the shackles of her father's tyranny.
"Mom, maybe one day you'll be strong enough to leave," Maya's voice wavered with emotion, her eyes searching her mother's face for any sign of acknowledgment or understanding. "And when you are, you'll have a place with me."
Maya's mother wiped away a stray tear, her expression a mask of resignation and sorrow. Though she remained silent, Maya could see the turmoil in her eyes, the silent plea for forgiveness and understanding that lingered just beneath the surface.
As Maya stepped out of the door, her heart heavy with sorrow and uncertainty, one thought burned brightly in her mind: Carina. In that moment of despair and betrayal, all Maya wanted was to be enveloped in the warmth of Carina's embrace.
She pulled out her phone and dialed Carina's number.
