Work Text:

Mitchell didn’t want to get up. Inspection was soon, and the sun shone in through the small window by his bunk, at the perfect angle so it landed right in his eyes. His bed was warm, and comfy, and he wanted to stay there forever, but he decided to get up. Mitchell yawned when his sister Drew made her way toward his bunk.

“What do you think you’re doing?” Drew interrogated, looking displeased at Mitchell, eyeing him and glancing around his area. “You don’t get to sleep in. It’s inspection day, so clean up your mess.” Mitchell swallowed, and nodded slightly. As soon as she walked off, he immediately got changed, and picked up what small mess he had on the floor. Mitchell wasn’t as messy as the rest of his cabin (they weren’t technically “messy,” but more.. disorganized) so it wasn’t as bad as he hoped. He fixed his bed and awaited what was next. Until then, Mitchell figured he would stop by the mess hall and get some breakfast.

The Aphrodite got a 4/5, which is not very bad considering how rushed everyone was. Mitchell and the rest of the cabin went out to grab breakfast. Mitchell let the other cabin members grab their food first, before grabbing his own breakfast, which was a plate of eggs and bacon wrapped sausage. As he went to sit down at his table, he heard giggling from across the mess hall. It came from the Hermes table. They were always loud and boisterous when they were eating, telling jokes and laughing amongst themselves. Mitchell found it amusing. He wished the Aphrodite cabin was as outgoing as they were. Sure, the Aphrodite cabin was outgoing in its own way, but it was in the way that they whispered to each other, snickering quietly as they talked about hot gossip around camp, and today was no different. When Mitchell returned to the table, Lacy gestured for him to join the conversation. Mitchell obliged and put his plate down next to his siblings as they spoke discreetly amongst each other.

“It’s been getting really boring around here. We need to do something.” Lacy demanded, in a hushed tone. “Maybe like an event?” She thought for a moment, but decided nothing. “Anyone have any ideas?”

After a while, one of their siblings spoke up. “What about.. Truth or dare? Or some other party game?” Drew scoffed at the comment.

“We do those all the time. It’s just the same thing over and over again. Nothing dramatic happens.” Drew said harshly. Mitchell just poked at his food, only slightly paying attention to the conversation. His eyes wandered. From his plate, to his siblings, to the architecture of the columns of the mess hall, and his eyes hovered until they met with someone else's. That someone was not someone Mitchell expected, in the very least.

It was Connor Stoll, from the Hermes cabin.

Their eyes met only for a moment. Then, Connor Stoll looked down and back at his other siblings. That was strange, Mitchell thought. His eyes lingered for a little longer, before looking back down at his food. It was a garbled mess on his plate, he only ate a small portion of it.

“Mitch, are you listening?” Lacy asked, nudging him on the shoulder.

Mitchell blinked, startled slightly before looking at Lacy. “Yeah.. sorry. I zoned out for a second.” He didn't realize he was staring.
