Chapter Text
Hermione stumbled through the grand doors of the wizarding mansion, her burgundy dress shimmering under the enchanted lights. The dazzling array of masked figures and floating candles overwhelmed her senses, causing her to falter in her heels.
"I can't believe you talked me into this," Hermione hissed at Ginny, adjusting her black filigree mask for the hundredth time. "This is ridiculous. I should be at home, working on the werewolf rights proposal, not in at a Quidditch Party, with who knows who, doing who knows what!"
Ginny rolled her eyes, the feathers of her phoenix-inspired mask fluttering. "For Merlin's sake, Hermione, live a little. You need to relax and have some fun."
"Relax? At a party full of strangers in masks? How is that supposed to be relaxing?" Hermione's voice rose an octave, drawing curious glances from nearby partygoers.
Blaise chuckled, his smooth voice carrying a hint of amusement. "Perhaps if you removed that stick from your—"
"Blaise!" Ginny elbowed her husband sharply.
Hermione's cheeks flushed, and she bit her lower lip. She couldn't shake the feeling that this was a mistake. The Ministry of Magic employee, Department of Magical Law Enforcement, had no business attending such a risqué event. What if someone recognized her? What would they think?
Yet, beneath her apprehension, she was excited. It had been so long since she'd done anything spontaneous, anything just for the sake of enjoyment. The war had changed her, made her more cautious, more focused on her work. But tonight... tonight, she was anonymous behind her mask. She could be anyone, do anything.
"Come on," Ginny said, grabbing Hermione's arm and pulling her deeper into the party. "Let's get you a drink. That'll help you loosen up."
As they weaved through the crowd, Hermione's senses were assaulted by the sights, sounds, and smells of the party. The air was thick with the scent of expensive perfumes, the tang of alcohol, and a heady, intoxicating aroma that made her head spin. Music pulsed through the air, a strange blend of classical orchestral pieces and modern wizarding beats.
Hermione's eyes darted through the sea of masks, seeking a familiar face. She smiled as she spotted a shock of messy black hair. Harry. Even with his emerald mask, she'd recognize that unruly mop anywhere.
He stood with his wife Cho, her swan mask perched elegantly atop her head. Beside them, Angelina's statuesque form was unmistakable in a daring red and gold jumpsuit, Fred's arm draped around her waist. Another figure leaned in, broad-shouldered and fit—Oliver Wood, she guessed, from the way he gestured animatedly.
"Ginny, wait," Hermione tugged at her friend's arm. "I see Harry and the others. Maybe we should—"
"Not a chance," Ginny smirked. "You're not using him as an excuse to avoid the fun parts of this party."
The 'fun parts'? Merlin's beard, what had she gotten herself into? Her eyes lingered on Harry's group, a pang of longing twisting in her chest. The familiarity of her friends called to her, a safe harbor in this sea of debauchery.
But as her gaze swept over the writhing bodies on the dance floor, the couples sneaking into darkened alcoves, she felt a wicked delight. Her skin tingled with every brush against other partygoers. When was the last time she'd felt so... alive?
"Fine," she conceded, squaring her shoulders. "Lead on, then. But if I end up hexing someone, I'm blaming you."
Ginny's laughter rang out as she pulled Hermione deeper into the throng, away from the safety of the known and into the intoxicating unknown.
Suddenly, a familiar dreamy voice cut through the noise. "Oh, hello Hermione, Ginny, Blaise. Lovely night for a Nargle gathering, isn't it?"
Hermione turned to see Luna Lovegood—no, Luna Pucey now—standing nearby, her multi-colored flowing dress a stark contrast to the more subdued attire of those around her. Her butterfly mask couldn't hide her protuberant grey eyes, which seemed to look right through Hermione.
"Luna!" Hermione exclaimed, relief washing over her at the sight of a familiar face. "I didn't expect to see you here."
Luna smiled serenely. "Oh, yes. Adrian thought it would be an excellent opportunity to study the mating habits of Wrackspurts. They're quite active in environments with high emotional energy, you know."
Hermione blinked. Before she could formulate a response, Pucey appeared at Luna's side, his serpent-inspired mask glinting in the candlelight.
"Ladies, Zabini," he greeted them with a slight nod. "Enjoying the festivities?"
"We've only just arrived," Ginny replied, her eyes scanning the room. "But it looks promising. Pucey did you see Marcel? That asshole owes me tickets."
As Pucey and Ginny launched into a discussion about various professional players in attendance, Hermione found her thoughts drifting. She fidgeted with her mask again, Her hands hovered over her hips, unconsciously smoothing the fabric. It was more revealing than anything she usually wore, and she felt exposed, vulnerable.
She caught sight of her reflection in a nearby enchanted mirror and barely recognized herself. The woman staring back at her was sensual, mysterious. Her usually bushy hair had been charmed into sleek waves that cascaded down her back, and the mask lent her an air of intrigue.
For a moment, Hermione allowed herself to imagine what it would be like to fully embrace this persona. To let go of her inhibitions, to be daring and spontaneous. To be the kind of witch who attended masquerade parties and reveled in the anonymity they provided.
Her musings were interrupted by a sudden hush falling over the crowd. All eyes turned towards the grand staircase at the far end of the ballroom. A figure appeared at the top, their identity concealed behind an elaborate mask that seemed to shift and change, never settling on one form.
"Welcome, esteemed guests," a magically amplified voice boomed through the room. "To a night of mystery, magic, and unbridled passion. Leave your inhibitions at the door and embrace the freedom that anonymity provides. Tonight, you are not bound by the constraints of your daily lives. Tonight, you are free to explore your deepest desires, your most secret fantasies."
She glanced around, noting the mix of excitement and apprehension on the faces of those around her.
"Explore the mansion at your leisure," the host continued. "You'll find many... interesting diversions throughout. Remember, what happens behind the mask, stays behind the mask. Enjoy your evening."
With a dramatic flourish of their wand, the host disappeared in a shower of golden sparks, leaving the guests to break into excited chatter.
"Well," Blaise drawled, a smirk playing on his lips. "That was certainly... intriguing."
Ginny nodded, her eyes sparkling with mischief. "I told you this would be fun, Hermione. Are you ready to embrace your wild side?"
Hermione opened her mouth to protest, to insist that she didn't have a wild side, but something stopped her. Maybe it was the atmosphere, charged with anticipation, possibility and the smell of alcohol. Maybe it was the way the mask made her feel both hidden and seen. Maybe it was simply the realization that for once in her life, she wanted to do something unexpected. Or maybe it was the the fact that it was a Friday night and tomorrow she would go back to her routine.
"I... I think I need some air," she said instead. "I'm going to explore a bit."
Before anyone could stop her, Hermione turned and plunged into the crowd. She weaved between masked figures. This was insane, she shouldn't be here, she should be at home.
The magical decorations came alive around her—golden snitches fluttered past her head, enchanted streamers danced in an unseen breeze, and the starry ceiling above shifted and swirled in mesmerizing patterns.
She went to a quieter corner of the ballroom, near one of the many bars scattered throughout the venue. A bartender in a jester's mask was mixing drinks with theatrical flair, sending colorful liquids arcing through the air to land perfectly in waiting glasses.
"What's your poison, love?" he asked as Hermione approached.
She hesitated, then decided to throw caution to the wind. "Surprise me," she said.
"Feeling adventurous, are we? I've got just the thing."
With a series of complex wand movements, he conjured a swirling, iridescent liquid that seemed to change color as it moved. It settled into a delicate crystal glass, emitting a faint, shimmering mist.
"I call it 'Liquid Courage,'" he said with a wink. "Guaranteed to help you embrace the spirit of the masquerade."
Hermione took the glass, eyeing it warily. Every instinct told her to be cautious, to ask about the ingredients, to cast a quick revealing charm. But the rebellious part of her, the part that had agreed to come to this ridiculous party in the first place, won out.
She raised the glass to her lips and took a sip. The liquid seemed to dance on her tongue, tasting of summer berries one moment and rich chocolate the next. A warmth spread through her body, chasing away her lingering nervousness and replacing it with a heady sense of possibility, irresponsibility and freedom?
As she lowered the glass, Hermione felt a prickle of awareness on the back of her neck. She turned, her eyes scanning the crowd, and froze. Across the room, partially hidden in the shadow of a pillar, stood a tall, broad-shouldered figure in a dark mask. Even from this distance, she could feel the intensity of his gaze.
There was something familiar about the way he stood, the set of his shoulders. The way his eyes bore into her felt rather intimate, dangerous. She shivered. This felt so similar, like…
Could it be...?
Before she could get a better look, a group of laughing partygoers passed between them. When they moved on, the mysterious figure had vanished.
Hermione furrowed her brow. Had that been Viktor Krum? It made sense that he'd be invited to a party like this. The annual European Quidditch Gala, though as the minutes ticked by she was sure the term "gala" had been used with too much freedom.
She took another sip of her drink, feeling the warmth spread through her once more. Memories of her time with Viktor during the Triwizard Tournament flooded her mind—his intense gaze, the way he'd made her feel beautiful and desired for the first time in her life, the tentative, chaste kisses they'd shared in the quiet corners of Hogwarts' library.
They'd kept in touch sporadically over the years, but their lives had taken different paths. Yet she'd never quite forgotten the way he made her feel, the passion he'd awakened in her fourteen year old self. Yet he never pushed her more than she was willing to give. He was always a perfect gentleman. Back then the two year difference made it impossible to even consider anything with him.
But now, that two year difference didn't mean anything.
Hermione bit her lip, weighing her options. She could return to Ginny and the others, stick to the familiar and safe. Or she could venture further into the party, possibly crossing paths with the mysterious figure again.
The 'Liquid Courage' seemed to hum in her veins, urging her towards, whom she hoped was Viktor. With a deep breath, Hermione made her decision. She downed the rest of her drink, feeling it fizz pleasantly all the way down, and set off into the crowd.
As she moved through the throng of masked revelers, Hermione felt a newfound confidence in her steps. She felt lighter, carefree. The hesitant, work-focused woman she'd been earlier in the evening fizzled away, replaced by someone bolder, more daring.
She was drawn to a magical photo booth, where a line of giggling witches and wizards waited their turn. As she watched, a couple entered, only to emerge a few moments later looking distinctly disheveled, their masks slightly askew.
Hermione's cheeks flushed as she realized the booth was being used for more than just innocent photos.
