Chapter One: A Chance Encounter

The bustling sounds of Bangkok faded as Cal pushed open the glass door of her cozy café, The Gathering Grounds. The familiar scent of freshly brewed coffee and baked pastries welcomed her, blending perfectly with the soft indie tunes playing in the background. It was early morning, just after dawn, and the café was still quiet, save for the rhythmic sounds of the espresso machine.

Cal adjusted her glasses, her eyes scanning the café to ensure everything was in order before the day began. She wasn’t expecting any of the Rainbow Gang or their extended group to show up this early, but the café was always ready for them. The rooftop, their private sanctuary, had already been prepared—blankets draped over chairs, cushions fluffed, and the fridge stocked with their favorite drinks.

As she moved behind the counter to check on the supplies, the door jingled, announcing a visitor. Cal looked up, surprised to see Pailiu stepping inside, a small smile on her face.

“P’Cal,” Pailiu greeted her softly, her voice a mix of shyness and warmth. She wore a simple white shirt and jeans, her hair tied back in a ponytail. Despite her casual attire, she still exuded the effortless charm that had captivated many during Miss Grand Thailand 2023.

“Liu, you’re up early,” Cal replied, her tone casual but curious. It wasn’t often that Pailiu came to the café alone, especially at this hour.

Pailiu shrugged, a hint of a blush creeping onto her cheeks. “I couldn’t sleep, and I remembered how you mentioned this place is a good spot to clear your head. I hope it’s okay I came without warning.”

“Of course, it’s okay,” Cal said, offering a reassuring smile. “You’re always welcome here. Want some coffee?”

Pailiu nodded, grateful. “Please, that would be great.”

As Cal busied herself making Pailiu’s coffee, the younger woman wandered around the café, her eyes taking in the intimate, homey atmosphere. She had been here before with the others, but this was the first time she had the place to herself—well, herself and Cal.

Cal handed her a steaming cup of coffee, and they both settled into one of the comfortable couches near the large windows, where the early morning light streamed in, casting a golden glow over the room.

“Is everything alright, Liu?” Cal asked after a few moments of comfortable silence. She wasn’t one to pry, but she could sense something was on Pailiu’s mind.

Pailiu sipped her coffee, gathering her thoughts before responding. “I’ve just been… thinking a lot lately. About everything—MGT, Gen1es, the future…” She trailed off, her gaze distant.

Cal nodded, understanding the weight of those thoughts. She had seen many of her friends go through similar moments of introspection, especially after the whirlwind that was the pageant world. “It’s a lot to process,” she said gently. “But you don’t have to figure it all out at once.”

Pailiu looked at her, her eyes filled with a mix of gratitude and something else—something that made Cal’s chest tighten slightly. “Thank you, P’Cal. You always know the right thing to say.”

Cal chuckled softly, brushing off the compliment. “I’m just here to listen. And make sure you’re okay.”

They fell into a comfortable silence again, sipping their coffee as the city slowly woke up around them. The moment felt oddly intimate, but Cal didn’t think much of it. She had always been a protector, a confidante, someone her friends could rely on, and Pailiu was no different. She was just a little sister who needed someone to talk to.

Pailiu, on the other hand, found herself drawn to Cal in a way she hadn’t expected. There was something about the older woman’s quiet strength, her calm demeanor, that made Pailiu feel safe—something she hadn’t realized she needed until now.

As the sun climbed higher, casting long shadows across the café, Cal stood up, breaking the comfortable silence. “Why don’t we head up to the rooftop? It’s even quieter up there, and the view’s pretty nice at this time.”

Pailiu smiled, nodding in agreement. “I’d like that.”

They made their way upstairs, the early morning air cool against their skin as they stepped onto the rooftop. The city sprawled out before them, the hustle and bustle below a distant hum. Cal led Pailiu to a corner where two cushioned chairs were set up, offering the perfect vantage point to watch the world go by.

They sat in companionable silence once more, the tension in Pailiu’s shoulders slowly easing as she soaked in the serenity of the moment. Cal watched her from the corner of her eye, noticing the way the younger woman’s expression softened, the worries she had mentioned earlier seeming to melt away in the peaceful surroundings.

“You don’t have to carry all that weight on your own, you know,” Cal said quietly, her voice barely above a whisper, but it carried a world of meaning.

Pailiu turned to her, surprise flickering in her eyes before it was replaced by something more profound. “I know, P’Cal. And I’m glad I have you… and everyone else.”

Cal smiled, reaching over to give Pailiu’s hand a reassuring squeeze. “We’re all in this together.”

Pailiu’s heart swelled with a warmth she hadn’t expected, and she found herself holding onto Cal’s hand just a little longer than necessary. Cal didn’t seem to mind, and they both turned back to the view, letting the moment linger.

As they sat there, the first hints of a deeper connection began to form between them—nothing romantic, not yet, but something that felt like it could grow into something more if they allowed it. For now, though, they were content to simply be in each other’s presence, finding comfort in the quiet companionship they shared.

And as the morning sun continued to rise, Cal couldn’t help but feel that maybe, just maybe, this was the beginning of something new—something that neither of them fully understood yet, but that felt undeniably right.
