Chapter Text
It’s July 20, Friday, the first day of summer recess, and Oikawa Tooru’s 18th birthday.
His family will gather to celebrate tomorrow at lunch, so he’s left to enjoy the day with his teammates and friends after volleyball practice ends. They all go to Oikawa’s house, to enjoy the recently filled pool, eat takeout, and play games until late at night. As long as they don’t play music too loud and wake the neighbors, Oikawa’s parents don’t have any complaints.
“Truth or dare?” Yahaba asks Kunimi.
Everyone has found a seat or a place to lie down in different parts of Oikawa's backyard: Yahaba, Kunimi, and Matsukawa sprawl on the lounge chairs. Hanamaki has his feet inside the swimming pool, seated on the edge with a can of cold coke in his hand. Oikawa and Kindaichi are still in the water; Oikawa is lounging on a float recliner, while Kindaichi sits on the shallow end. Iwaizumi lies on the pool’s edge, tracing patterns in the water with his hand. Watari sits on the grass, brushing the hair of Oikawa's golden retriever.
“Truth,” replies Kunimi after thinking it over for a moment.
“What’s the most embarrassing thing you’ve seen Oikawa do?” Yahaba asks.
“Hey! It’s my birthday, you can’t bully me!” the alluded one complains, but his friends turn a deaf ear.
Kunimi chuckles. “It’s hard to pick just one thing.”
“Hey!” Oikawa exclaims again.
“I think,” he says between chuckles, “I think it has to be the time he got distracted by some fan of his screaming from the stands and ended up getting tangled in the net.”
Everyone bursts into laughter. The sound is even louder than the music playing in the background. Oikawa groans and hides his face against the float.
“Nooo, I've almost forgotten about that. Why did you have to bring it up!?” he complains.
Once the laughter dies down, Kunimi chooses someone. “Matsukawa-san, truth or dare?” he asks.
“Dare,” he replies without hesitation.
“Send the last picture you took to the last person you texted without context,” Kunimi says.
“I don’t even know what the last pic I took is,” Matsukawa says as he takes his phone from his pocket. He opens his gallery and finds the last photo. “Oh, okay, that’s doable.”
“What is it?” Hanamaki asks.
Matsukawa turns his phone for the rest to see. It’s a picture he took of Oikawa’s dog jumping into the pool and splashing water everywhere.
“Ah, boring,” Hanamaki says.
“Who’s the last person you texted?” Yahaba asks.
“My mom, it seems.” Matsukawa shows them his screen again, then pushes the send button to send her the photo. “She loves dogs, so she’ll enjoy it.”
“Boring,” Oikawa says.
“Mad Dog, truth or dare?” Matsukawa asks.
“Truth,” he replies.
It takes Matsukawa a while to come up with a question. He had expected Kyotani to say dare.
“Is it true that you have a crush on Iwaizumi?” he asks jokingly, earning laughs from the rest of the team. Oikawa is glad that they’re not making fun of him for once.
“What the fuck, man!? Of course not!” Kyotani replies. Kyotani's cheeks turn slightly red, impressing Oikawa with Matsukawa's ability to embarrass him.
They play a few more rounds, each dare and question more embarrassing and hilarious than the other. Matsukawa is dared to act like a dog until someone chooses him for another dare. Yahaba is asked to do a handstand for as long as he can. Watari is dared to pay for everyone’s food the next time they hang out. And so much more ridiculous, similar stuff. Mostly harmless.
Oikawa is about to remind everyone that the last bus passes in an hour, so unless they want to sleepover—which he doesn’t mind, but there are not enough futons for everyone—, they’ll have to get moving, when Hanamaki turns to Iwaizumi.
“Truth or dare?”
“Dare.”
Hanamaki smirks as if he has been waiting for this moment the entire evening. Oh no. This one will be bad.
“I dare you and Oikawa—”
“Why me? I didn’t say dare!” he immediately complains.
“—to behave as if you were a couple for a whole week.”
Everyone turns to look at Hanamaki with their mouths hanging open, then shift their gaze to Oikawa and Iwaizumi.
“HUH!?” It’s the only sound Iwaizumi can muster.
“Makki, what the hell,” Oikawa says, “a week!? Why is Iwa-chan’s dare so long compared to everyone else's? So unfair!” he complains. “And why do I have to take part in it?”
“Come on, Oikawa, don’t be a wimp,” Hanamaki says.
“It’s not like there’ll be much difference.” Matsukawa's muttering makes the teammates around him snicker as he says, "You two are practically glued together all the time already."
“What the hell is wrong with you, Makki!? I won’t do it,” Iwaizumi says.
“It’s not like I’m telling you to make out in the middle of the classroom, just, I don’t know, call each other silly nicknames, hold hands, feed each other lunch, dumb shit like that,” Hanamaki explains.
“Also, it’s summer break. Most of the students who aren’t in clubs or the student council or aren’t idiots who have to retake exams,” Kunimi says, directing that last part to Yahaba and Kyotani, “won’t be at school, so there are fewer people around to see you.”
“I think it’s a fair dare. We dared Watari to pay for all our meals the next time we get lunch together, and Matsukawa was dared to let Hanamaki dye his hair pink the next time he dyes his own,” Yahaba argues.
“Yes, exactly,” Hanamaki nods. “Come on guys, it’ll be fun.”
“Yeah, fun for you maybe,” Iwaizumi says, rolling his eyes. He sits up and crosses his arms, his posture no longer relaxed.
Oikawa looks at him, then at Makki. He thinks for a few silent minutes before accepting.
“I’ll do it.” He shrugs.
“What?” Iwaizumi looks at him, his eyes widened.
“I’ll do it,” he repeats. “As long as Iwa-chan is okay with it.”
They’ve known each other since Oikawa was born, literally. He’s not afraid of holding his best friend’s hand for a few days or hand-feed him food. They used to do stuff like that when they were little kids, anyway. They’ll just have to deal with their teammates and classmates giggling and whispering about them. Oikawa is used to the attention, so it’s not like anything will change. It’s not a big deal. But if Iwaizumi is fully against it, he won’t force him.
“Fine, whatever, I’ll do it,” Iwaizumi accepts in the end.
The rest of the team cheers. Oikawa swears he can see a tint of pink on Iwaizumi’s cheeks, and he is avoiding looking at Tooru.
“Great so, from today at…” Hanamaki checks the time on his phone “21:37 to next Friday at the same time, Oikawa Tooru and Iwaizumi Hajime will be a couple.”
