Shouto can't sleep.
This is not an uncommon occurrence given his track record with nightmares and memories keeping him awake-more often than not the distinction between the two of them eludes him, the thin line between them becoming blurred.
Tonight it is neither a nightmare nor the ghost of a bad memory haunting him.
Tonight it is eight small paws climbing his body like a mountain, two sets of tiny teeth biting his toes playfully.
He runs his hands through soft fur every chance he gets, getting rewarded with happy purring that sounds incredibly loud in the silence of the night.
Next to him Katsuki is sleeping peacefully, completely undisturbed by the chaos their little fur babies are causing.
His lips are parted slightly, brows furrowed even in his sleep and Shouto wonders if he's having another of his nonsensical dreams he will undoubtedly tell Shouto about in the morning.
He watches the even rise and fall of Katsuki's chest, places his hand on top of his beating heart-the cause of many of Shouto's nightmares.
The movement of his hands draws the kittens’ interest and they jump on top of Katsuki's chest momentarily before darting off again, one of them attacking Shouto's feet once again, the other stomping clumsily on top of Katsuki's pillow so she can lie down next to him and lick his hair.
Katsuki doesn't even stirr.
Shouto smiles at the soft image in front of his eyes, illuminated by the bright light of the full moon. Maybe that's why he can't sleep. He remembers reading something about the moon phases affecting sleep at some point, although he can't remember the details right now.
It's not important, he thinks.
He just knows he can't sleep and for once he isn't bothered by that at all.
