The darkness was everywhere. Filling her up inside and spilling out to surround her, suffocating her. She could feel it in the air like a malevolent force, trying to suppress her. She gasped into the dark, struggling to contain it until she couldn’t anymore. Her hands shot out as she searched for a lamp, a torch, anything that would help her.
“Mother?”
She knew that voice. The voice of the only person left for her. Her reason for life. Draco. Narcissa turned toward the voice as a light flickered. Curtains opened and suddenly she was blinded by the sunlight that was streaming through, sending the darkness back to its corners where it couldn’t harm her.
“Mother, are you alright?”
Draco’s face was full of concern as he stared at her. She reached out a hand, gripping his tightly in her own.
“I am now,” she reassured him, the panic having left her for the time being.
