Work Text:
Rio was exhausted. She spent the whole day delivering the bodies to the afterlife. Apparently, everyone decided to die on a random Friday night. Once she was done with the final body, she called it a day. She hated being away from home this long. Every time she gets called to “work”, it’s getting harder to say goodbye to her wife and son each day.
So yes, Rio hates her job. Rio hates being Death. Especially when it means spending less time with her family.
She sighed as she escorted the last soul of the day to her realm. Finally. She thought to herself. She slowly morphed her face back to her mortal form and because she was tired, she didn’t bother changing her black Death outfit. It’s already nighttime anyway, Nicky wouldn’t notice.
With a snap of her fingers, she teleported right outside their cottage. Her home. She smiled at that thought. Before, her realm was what she called home. But now? Home is wherever her beloved witch and a certain cute 5-year-old kid are.
She heard laughter coming from the cottage. She picked up her pace and went inside, removing her hood, and hanging it on the coat rack by the door.
“Mami! You’re home!” Her son, Nicholas, shrieked when he heard the cottage door close. Before Rio could say anything else, she was greeted with a tight hug from her son, which she returned gladly.
“Hey Nicky, I’m so sorry mami’s work trip too long. But I’m here now!” She told him once they let go of each other, ruffling his hair. Nicky still doesn’t know she’s Death, that would be too complicated to explain to a kid. They decided to just call it “work trips” so he wouldn’t ask any questions.
“It’s okay, mami. Momma and I did a lot of things anyway so I kind of forgot about you working so late,” he responded eagerly. “Oh no, what happened to your clothes mami? Why does it have holes on the side?” Nicky asked and the genuine worry across his face was enough to make Rio’s heart melt, making her forget about her exhaustion for a while.
“It’s called design, cariño. It’s made that way,” she explained, chuckling at the way Nicky’s eyes widened in realization. “Now, will you tell me what you and momma did while I was away?”
Nicky nodded excitedly. “I tried to make momma teach me magick like her purple and your green earlier but she said I was way too small to learn it. I was sad at first but momma decided to teach me something else instead.”
“What did she teach you?” Rio raised an eyebrow in curiosity. Usually, in these situations, things don’t end well.
“Come to the living room, mami. I’ll show you!” Her boy grabbed her hand and practically dragged her to the other room. There she saw her wife setting up the coffee table, placing a freshly cooked pizza on it.
Agatha glanced up as they walked in and offered her wife a smile. “Hi, my love,” Agatha said, walking towards Rio and giving her a quick kiss. Rio melted into her kiss, completely convinced that her exhaustion was gone. Breaking the kiss, Agatha slipped her hand on her back, “Are you okay?”
“Long day. I’m just glad to be home,” Rio replied with a reassuring smile. Agatha was half convinced with her answer but she’ll have to deal with it later. Disrupting their little moment, Nicky tugged Rio’s hand to call her attention.
“Momma show mami what we made, please,” Nicky requested which made Agatha laugh at their son’s eager tone. “Okay, baby. Will you get a slice of what we made?” she asked, Nicky nodded right away and ran to grab a slice of the pizza.
Noticing what was happening, Rio looked between Agatha, Nicky, and the plate Nicky was preparing for her. “You made pizza?” she shockingly asked. She was not expecting this at all. “Hey! I know how to cook a lot of stuff, you know. Nicky and I were bored to death so I taught him how to make pizza instead of how to do magick,” Agatha explained.
Rio had a lot more questions as to why of all activities, Agatha chose this but was interrupted by Nicky handing her a slice. “Taste it, mami. It’s so good. I made sure of it,” he bragged and Rio followed her son’s command.
And he wasn’t lying. It really was good.
“Mhm, I didn’t know I’m part of a family of chefs! I think this is the best pizza I’ve ever had in my entire life,” Rio told Nicky in an exaggerated manner, causing Agatha to roll her eyes. Nicky’s smile was precious. He looked at Agatha with pride in his eyes. “See, momma? I knew mami would love it!”
“That she did, baby. Now, why don’t we all start eating the whole thing before it becomes cold?” Agatha suggested, earning an approval from her family. They all went to sit on the couch, Nicky in between Agatha and Rio, starting to eat the masterpiece of a pizza Agatha and Nicky made.
The family of three talked about everything and nothing at the same time. It was mostly Nicholas talking about his day like how he almost burned himself because of the oven and his mothers were actively listening to his rants. Sometime in the middle of their conversations, Rio dropped her hand on the couch and slipped it behind Nicky to hold Agatha’s free hand. Agatha gladly accepted her hand and started to rub soft circles using her thumb while listening to Nicky.
Rio was beyond happy. She never thought she could live a life like this and now that she has it, she’s going to make sure this will last. She’ll do everything to protect her family. Despite her job being so demanding, she’ll make sure to spend some time with them because there’s nothing else she would want to do.
Once the pizza was thoroughly feasted, Nicky remembered something. “Momma, mami?” he started, turning to look at his mothers. “Yes, Nicky?” Rio answered. “Isn’t it Friday today? It’s game night.”
Agatha pretended to be shocked at his revelation. “Oh shoot, you’re right. It must have slipped our minds. Do you mind getting our board games upstairs, Nicky?” Without saying anything else, Nicholas ran upstairs to get their games.
“Be careful, cariño!” Rio shouted, warning him. “Did you seriously let him get the board games to get alone time with me?” she said in a lower voice to Agatha. Her wife shrugged, “I missed you,” she admitted while pulling Rio closer to her.
Rio leaned on Agatha’s shoulder, letting out a satisfied sigh. Agatha put her arm over Rio’s shoulder, pulling her closer. “Seriously, are you okay?” Rio nodded in response. “I’m just tired. My job is exhausting sometimes. Many people decided to die today.”
“I could tell you were tired. You didn’t bother changing to your usual normal clothes. Not that I’m complaining, I love seeing you in this,” Agatha teased, earning a snort from Rio. “Such a sweet-talker.”
“You love it.”
“I love you,” Rio said, sitting up straight to face Agatha. “I love you and Nicky so much sometimes I don’t want to go and collect bodies ‘cause I want to spend time with you both.” Agatha cupped her face with her hands, “I know, my love. But that’s your job and we completely understand. We’ll always be here patiently waiting for you to come home.”
Touched by her wife’s words, Rio leaned forward to close the distance between them. There was no urgency in this kiss. Just a soft, sweet kiss between two witches in love. When they broke apart, they didn’t fully let go right away. Instead, they pressed their foreheads together, savoring the moment.
Rio was the one who moved first, lying down on the couch, her head on Agatha’s lap. Agatha fixed her position so that Rio could lie down and rest properly. She then started to play with Rio’s hair, which made Rio close her eyes.
“What’s taking him so long?” Rio mumbled, sleep getting to her. “He’s probably figuring out where he last placed them. He always forgets it’s in his secret compartment,” Agatha chuckled softly along with Rio. “That kid,” Rio said absentmindedly.
Agatha noticed that Rio could fall asleep now, “Sleep, my love. You need it.” Rio forced herself to shake her head but was still closing her eyes. “It’s game night,” she stated the obvious. “Nicky will understand, honey. You’re clearly about to sleep now,” Agatha pushed.
“I’m not about to fall asleep. I’m just resting my eyes,” Rio defended and Agatha scoffed. She was always this stubborn. “Sure,” she whispered, continuing what she was doing with her lover’s hair.
After a few seconds, Agatha noticed Rio was no longer saying anything else and her breathing was insinuating she was sleeping. She looked at her wife and stared at her beautiful face. She looked so peaceful, so breathtakingly beautiful, and Agatha couldn’t help but think how lucky she was to have her as her wife, to have Lady Death have a soft spot for her and their son.
“Not about to fall asleep my ass,” she murmured under her breath. Suddenly, she heard footsteps going down the stairs and saw Nicky walking towards them, board games in hand. He was about to say something but saw her mami sleeping which made him pout.
“Mami fell asleep waiting for me?” he asked and Agatha nodded. “Mami’s tired from her work trip, Nicky bear. Let’s let mami rest, okay? We can do game night tomorrow,” she told him. Nicky nodded then placed the board games slowly on the coffee table to not wake Rio up.
“Go to bed, baby. Don’t forget to brush your teeth,” Agatha reminded him. “Yes momma, good night!” Nicky replied and was about to turn around to retreat back to his room when Agatha stopped. “No goodnight kiss for your moms?”
Nicky smiled sheepishly then went near Agatha to give her a kiss on her cheek. After that, he gently kissed Rio’s cheek and said goodnight again before going upstairs. Agatha caught a glimpse of Rio smiling unconsciously after Nicky kissed her which made her grin as well.
Agatha was one lucky witch and will be forever thankful to the universe for giving her the love she thought she didn’t deserve. Deciding to not disrupt her wife’s sleep, she leaned back against the couch and closed her eyes, slowly drifting to sleep.
