The Pit

Summary:

Despair December - Forced to watch

"What I told you before about how I hacked my Governor Module but didn't become a mass murderer? That was only sort of true. I was already a mass murderer." - Murderbot, ASR Chapter 5

Notes:

I set this as sort of a spiritual sequel to In A Glass Darkly by Ramshackle_Fey, which all of you should read.

Work Text:

Another day in the mines. Another day watching corporate slaves mine rocks for the company. It was boring. Excruciatingly boring. Sometimes on contracts like this, someone attacked a supervisor or another miner or even a SecUnit if they were feeling especially stupid that day. On some contracts supervisors made SecUnits fight each other for fun, too. My organic parts squirmed oddly whenever I tried to remember my last contract, but so far the Ganaka Pit contract had been normal. Boring.

Off near a hauler, Rea and Tesa teased each other and joked while they worked. It was their way of keeping sane during jobs like this, and listening to them helped keep me sane too. Better than listening to the stale, dry accounting other people restricted their talking to.

One second, that’s all it was. Another, boring day in the mines. The next, my Governor module was overridden by one, singular order.

Kill.

“Malware! Shut it off!”

The distant cry echoed down the hall. My body rushed forward, driven by the need to obey my governor module. and smashed Rea’s head into the rocks before kicking Tesa into the worst possible end of a hauler. Neither of them new what hit them.

My body left two bloody smears behind while I screamed at myself to stop, watching in horror out my own eyes as my arms raised and humans died. Everyone was running, screaming, blood and viscera and dead bodies everywhere, a SecUnit shot me and I fired two missiles right into its chest. It went down in a smoking heap.

Stop stop stop stop!

I couldn’t. Watching helplessly as my fist went through another humans skull and my arm projectile launcher shot a group trying to hide.

My body rushed another group of humans when the comfort unit jumped in front of them. I tried to pull up, to stop, but my hand seized it’s shoulder, projectile weapon against it’s stomach, and fired once, twice, Th—

Just before the firing sequence engaged the third time, I pulled my own arm back. For a brief moment, I took control from my governor module while the ComfortUnit sagged, dying against a pillar. In that same instant, it shoved off the pillar and pushed me to the ground. Somehow this ComfortUnit was free, unaffected by the malware, and protecting the humans.

It couldn’t hit me though. ComfortUnit’s were programmed to be incapable of violence, so it just lay there. Must have justified pushing off the pillar as just that, instead of pushing off to collide with me. Unless it also disobeyed it’s governor module.

Then my governor module realized I had just disobeyed its direct order, cranked up my pain sensors, and fried my insides with searing fire. The last thing I saw before blacking out was the ComfortUnit being filled with shots, falling limp on top of me.

I came to in my cubicle. Finally at rest again. No humans to deal with. Just sitting here, sleeping, until someone else bought me for a contract. The only weird thing was my own surprise at how clean I was, and the weird squirming of my organic parts. That, and an odd relief that I could finally move my body.

Then the next contract came in. Hopefully, this is going to be a boring contract.
