Chapter Text
It had been nearing 14 years since I started residing within the walls of these castles, my last companion an old reminder of the lands I came from. He stayed with me, keeping me company in times I needed it. My name became Melaen, being called that by the many princes who house themselves here. Though I may not be among the royalty bloodline, they kept me here regardless. They didn't want to turn a babe away. I was barely reborn before being taken away from Scytha to lands deemed safe for my upbringing. And through the treacherous storms, my body did not age, and my innocence to the situation was clear. I had not intended to claim a dragon, they claimed. The dragon had chosen me. And though my blood may be of bastard or not, they saw no need to turn me away, for I did not belong to any of them or their children. I had arrived from far to the West, Scytha being spotted by Lord Lannister flying over the seas. Where I had arrived from, it wasn't anywhere near their Kingdom and that seemed to ease Viserys's worry.
My stay here, honestly, became pleasant. Scytha was allowed to stay, though with his size, he couldn't be kept in the dragon's pit, so outside the walls became his resting place when I wasn't tending to him. He says he enjoys it here, too, though I believe he only says so because of the food being brought to him on a daily basis. His size was massive, in comparison to these dragon's at least. The largest, living dragon was named Vhagar, while the largest dragon known was called Balerion the Dread. Scytha was bigger than both of them. And though he wasn't the biggest known serpent of the place I came from, here, he was the largest dragon to fly the skies. He became a legend.
I became close with a few people here, Aemond, 2nd born son to the King, being among them. I enjoyed his quiet behavior, how well mannered he was, and most of all, how mature he was in comparison to his elder brother, Aegon. Aemond was a proud member of the Targaryen bloodline, though he lacked the dragon to show for it. Regardless, we would converse on more instances than one. I even taught him how to speak my home language, bringing him to communicate with Scytha from time to time. He very much appreciated that, even becoming close enough friends with the winged beast that he allowed Aemond to fly him sometimes. King Viserys was another person who I became close with, much to my surprise. He claims he enjoys our talks regarding the political side of being King, how to deal with his citizens, how to commune with the smallfolk, and how to gain their sense of trust, which is an area I lacked in, but we learnt together how to do such things. The King became truly fond of me, offering me many such things, like his own children's hand in marriage for one, though I always put those thoughts aside to think on in a later time, not entirely desiring a lover.
Helaena was an odd one. She would talk in riddles, her mind hazed with images she can't seem to process, or can seem to communicate. She would often say she sees a darkness growing within me, that only a great light can dim. Speaking of how my presence here is a danger to myself. Though my mind is pained with wisdom, even I can't comprehend what she means in the riddles she speaks in. Regardless of her strange habits, she was fine to be around. She and I would often take strolls around the castle grounds, those times I very much enjoyed. Then there was Aegon, the eldest born son to King Viserys. He became a bone in my side, constantly bothering me at every opportunity he could get. He would tug my hair, pull my dress, pock my neck. Little things that add up into a nuisance. I dreaded every evening dinner was called, knowing it meant seeing him once more. Most of my days were spent avoiding Aegon, not wanting to see him at all. Though, there was little I could do, especially with my current state, and the mere fact that I had grown fond of his father, the King.
And lastly, Rhaenyra. She and I had grown closer than the rest over the years. Though our age years apart, we seemed to always find topics to talk about. I liked her the most among these people, enjoying the way she held her head strong, and her wits sharp. Though she was mischievous in some ways, she still kept her knowledge on display, which made me enjoy our conversations very much.
This family are the people who took me in, raising me as one of their own, and though my knowledge is little when it comes to the ideas of mortal lives, here I will stay.
