Chapter Text
Sonic has been exhausted, constantly worried for his husband's wellbeing. They didn't expect their last "tussle" would end up in them spawning an offspring, yet here they are. Bruce only 15weeks along but the further he carries this child the more danger he'll be in, both for Bruce and the child.
"Sonic please, I don't want to lose this baby" Bruce pleaded. He wasn't too far along but it felt like he already had a connection to the child growing in him. He's far strained from Dick, Jason dead, and Tim, who he hasn't seen in so long. There's a maternal instinct in him begging for him not to let go of the fetus. Yet him and his husband can't come to terms with this. He's freaking Batman! Is Sonic underestimating his strength or the power of being rich?
"Darling, you have to understand. This is dangerous for you, me, the baby, and Gotham..." Sonic sighs, releasing Alpha pheromones in hopes to calm Bruce down a little but to avail. "You give birth and what? the city in shambles, the child is in danger. You don't know the power this child could possess and Doctor Eggman is still out for my head, do you think the child is safe?" Sonic clearly frustrated, they've been over this over and over and over again. He doesn't understand, why can't Bruce just fathom the severity of the situation?
Bruce has been all too weak to Sonic, especially when he senses his pheromones but he's too pregnant to care. "I've been fighting crime since I was young! Do you seriously think I can't handle this shit?!" bruce scowled "I'm done with you, why can't you just understand me!" he says in his deep monotone voice hiding the anger and disappointment. Bruce walked away from conversation unable to handle the stress of Sonic's persistent disapproval. Hopping into is new shiny Batmobile. "Alfred, I'm going out."
"Sire, you shouldn't be out so late considering you are with child" Alfred worried. Without another word Bruce drives away. Alfred, filled with concern and a sense of helplessness knowing he couldn't do anything, knowing it's only a matter of time before the tabloids report on Bruce's pregnancy.
The batmobile speeds through the streets of Gotham, Bruce's mind racing with Sonics unsympathetic bouts. He knew that what Sonic had said was realistic and from a place of concern but his heart couldn't take loosing another... The memories of Dick... Jason... Tim... They're all fresh in his heart and memories. Deep down inside he longs for his sons, his children, his only other companions other than Alfred before he had met his loving husband, Sonic. His grip tightened, the city' neon lights a blur and as he zooms past the stores and decrepit streets of cardboard boxes, drug addicts and homeless men. Sonic's words echo in his mind, the city is bad enough without me, I can protect myself with or without him. I'm rich anyways, what's a couple diapers, baby formulas and nannies for when I'm out gonna do to my bank account? The news? doesn't matter I'll sue them for defamation.
Bruce... no Batman couldn't be anymore frustrated till an all too familiar light shines on the night sky. A light that signals to him he's no longer Bruce Wayne CEO billionaire playboy zaddy but now he's the Dark knight, the Batman. The 'Bat signal' it was his call, one that has bugged him for years but he couldn't care less. He'll respond to it over and over again, the feeling was heavy but now it's just numb, a numbness too rare for an Omega but when you've been through what Bruce has been through, you'd feel it as well. Well it would've been if it wasn't for the pregnancy hormones it would have been numb. What is this he feels? Maybe a sense of maternal instincts for the city? The city he's spent all his life protecting? It's like how he has to protect the child in him too, and with that he has to protect the environment they grow up in.
The Batmobile zooms, following the light as it leads him to a place of danger. The explosions, the chaos, the faint laughter in the distance... it could only be one man, one insane... no deranged man (the author) it was, non other but THE Joker himself.
Batman and Joker...One can say that they have a rich past, richer than the CEO playboi billionaire zaddy that Bruce is, a push and pull relationship, one more unstable than children who write/read these kinda fics. What people, not even Alfred knew is that once Joker was Batman's rock, his support, his loving Alpha. They even almost eloped but Batman couldn't abandon his duty not just to his family's legacy but also to the city. Bruce's rejection drew Joker mad and if Batman wanted to keep his duty to the city, fine he'll give him that duty.
10 years later they here Batman stands, in the blazes of the Joker's chaos. Searching for the man he broke.
A laughter continues to echo, one that once made him laugh too but now it just infuriated him more than anything.
"Well... Well... Well... if it isn't my bat..." the Joker smiles "How have you been...well, how has the child been? The child you carry with that scurvy infested blue RAT" Jealousy echos in his voice, he's never been able to let go of Bruce, after all he was his first love.
The Batman stands in silence but the anger boils within him. By the time he's collected himself, he charges straight at the maniacal man in front of him.
*Insert an epic fight scene because I can't write those*
After a rough back and forth, Batman finally pins the Joker down. Batarang in hand, one sharper than Giga chad's jawline. He lifts it, bracing himself for the final time he'll see his first love alive. He has to, he can't let the Joker run safe, not when the safety of his soon to be born child is endangered by this man. The Joker looked defeated, like he knew his time has come and as Batman gives the final blow, a smile creeps into the Joker's lips.
BOOM
The last thing Bruce sees in blood pooling in his legs, a ringing in his ear as flames engulfed him, taking his final breath the last thing he sees is the faint silhouette of his blue lover.
Days, weeks and months go by and Bruce is still out cold. Tubes hanging by his bedside connecting to his limp body and Sonic beside him. Not a day go by that he hasn't left his beloved Bruce's side. He wasn't religious but if there are Gods out there he hopped they would take pity on his husband, who sacrificed not just himself but also his child for the sake of the thousands of people living in Gotham, his husband was now free. The Joker was gone, maybe him and Bruce could start a new, mourn their child and find solace somewhere. If only his beloved could wake. He couldn't deny it was reakless of him to fight knowing he was pregnant but if not him then who? The few times sonic had tried to fight the Joker, the man would run, unamused with Sonic's antics. The Joker just couldn't rile him up like he did Batman and that frustrated Sonic. He knew that the chaos the Joker knew was because of his history with Bruce, knew it was his way of still being close to Bruce even when whatever they had has long been severed and Sonic couldn't deny that it strained his relationship with Bruce whenever he had pandered to Joker's bullshit but now he realized that if Bruce didn't there would be no Gotham.
Another month passes and a sense of guilt swells within Sonic's heart. The realization that if it hadn't been for the Joker, their child would've been born by now. The frustration that if only he had been a little more sympathetic to Bruce then maybe he would be awake right now, maybe they would be able to hold the child in their arms, could have at least chosen a name together or build a nursery within their home. There's not a day that Sonic doesn't feel this guilt and frustration, he has no one else to blame but himself.
The winter is colder without Bruce, the mansion feels emptier, Sonic has come to somewhat understand the pain Bruce has been through all these years alone with just Alfred. He only stepped out of Bruce's room for a quick second, only to inhale the cold and frigid air in this time of year. In the distance is the sight of Gotham's now peaceful nightlife. Most assumed that the Bruce Wayne has been sick for months and hasn't been able to recover all this time and the Batman had died along with the Joker. Of course him and Alfred had played a part in manipulating the news.
Sonic signs, walking back into Bruce's room.
As soon as he steps in he freezes, not because of the winter air but because there he is, Bruce sitting upright in bed with a somber look painting his face. They remain in silence, Sonic afraid that if he moved, he'll find that he was only hallucinating and Bruce is still in fact out cold. The tension was thick and the room itself felt heavy. Until Bruce finally broke the silence
"How long has it been?" He said in a voice much deeper and duller than usual.
"around 7 months..." Sonic practically choking out his reply.
"My child?"
Sonic gulps, looking away from Bruce as his heartbeat practically echoing through his whole body.
Bruce didn't need a reply, he knew what the silence meant. A tear slowly welling up in his eye. "You got what you wanted, are you happy?" Bruce sighs, fidgeting with his fingers looking down at his stomach where his child once was.
"I realized what I wanted in the moment wasn't what I would've wanted now... I'm not happy, I'm no where near happy. I'm sorry dear, I failed us." Sonic choked on his apology with tears streaming down his face "I failed you... and our child. I'll understand if you don't forgive me, I'll understand if you hate me now. I feel like such a fraud I'm sorry" unable to move, Sonic simply stands there drowning in his tears, guilt and frustration. Until a warmth engulfs him. It was Bruce's tall weak figure kneeling down to hug him. "I was being reckless too, it wasn't just your fault. I was too stubborn, I should've at least ask for help. I'm sorry..."
With heavy hearts and tears in their eyes, there they would remain in each other's arms for the rest of the night. Finding comfort in both of their broken souls.
