Soft Enough To Fall

Summary:

Rui Kamishiro has always been a little too strange, a little too brilliant, and a little too alone. Pushed out by a world that never tried to understand him, he drifts through middle school like a quiet anomaly—misunderstood, muffled, and fading. Then, in the quiet of a lonely afternoon, he meets Tsukasa Tenma—a boy with his own weight to carry and a heart still trying to beat out music in a world full of noise.

Together, they build a fragile kind of sanctuary: a rooftop, a shared gaze, a place where no one has to pretend to be okay. But even soft bonds can fray under the pressure of silent grief.

Maybe they’re not here to be saved. Maybe they’re just here to float a little while—together.

“He never asked to be remembered. He just wanted to rest in peace. In softness. In quiet.”

A story about quiet love, aching softness, and the fragile art of existing.

Chapter Text

Hi guys!

Before you begin reading Soft Enough to Fall, I want to gently let you know that this story explores some heavy and emotional themes, written with softness, care, and poetic detail.

Content Warnings (applied gently throughout the story):

• Bullying and emotional neglect

• Mental health struggles and isolation

• Implied self-harm (Rui’s scars are referenced, but not graphically described)

Suicide ideation and discussion

Attempted suicide (Chapter 7)

• Death of a main character (Chapter 9)

• Grief, healing, and quiet intimacy

• A bittersweet ending

Please read at your own pace and take breaks if you need to. While the story isn’t graphic or shocking, it is emotionally heavy, slow, and dreamlike written from the perspective of two boys floating through a world that doesn’t always hold them gently.

A song i listened to while writing this is ひきずるビート (Hikizuru Beat) by MASS OF THE FERMENTING DREGS.

This story is deeply personal to me, and I hope if you connect to it, you know you’re not alone. Thank you so much for reading.

With love,

Hikaru <3
