Work Text:
Cole leaned against the door way as he watched the current scene unfold before him. Kai, their beloved hot headed brother was currently cursing out who knows what as he aggressively attacked the poor training dummy on the deck. Cole was pretty positive he could see smoke coming out of the fire starters nose and mouth.
He wasn’t the only one watching, the whole team was. It was kinda hilarious that Kai didn’t notice yet, he was so angry that he didn’t realize the extra set of eyes watching him. Which, if you think about it, is kinda concerning if you realize how much of a major flaw that is.
“He’s gonna demolish that training dummy.” Lloyd spoke out as he watched with concern.
“I will set a reminder to order a new one.” Zane chirped from somewhere beside Lloyd as they watched.
“Hey, so is it just me or are Kai’s eye’s…turning red?” Jay pointed out, the second he said that everyone focused on Kai’s eyes. And just like Jay said, Kai’s usual soft amber eyes were now glowing an aggressive red.
“Alright. That’s it, I’m gonna go cool that idiot off.” Nya huffed as she formed water in her hands and walked towards her raging brother.
“Zane, please record this.” Jay mumbled excitedly.
“Recording has started.” Zane said, sounding a bit too happy to be recording their brother getting soaked. But instead they watched as Nya got closer Kai and then her water vanished…well not vanished. It evaporated, leaving nothing but steam behind. Cole stood up straight at that, staring in pure shock and one look at the others told him they felt the same way.
Nya stepped away from her brother, returning with sweat dripping off her skin. Zane had ended his recording the second she returned.
“It’s fucking boiling over there. He…he’s heating the air around him to the point of evaporating my water! That’s never happened before!” She exclaimed.
“Why is he even this mad?” Lloyd asked.
Pixal, who seemed to be standing by and just watching finally decided to speak up.
“He returned from a solo mission a couple of hours ago. I assume something happened during then and he is feeling…angry.” She explained.
“Angry is an understatement.” Jay mumbled as the heat from Kai suddenly reached them, causing all of them, even Pixal and Zane, to wince at the wave of heat. Zane immediately changed his vision to heat vision, wanting to see how hot his brother was running.
“Oh dear.”
“What’s wrong?” Cole asked as he pushed his hair back, sweat already accumulating on his forehead. The others looking towards Zane with raised eyebrows.
“Kai’s current body temperature is at 157 Celsius and the temperature of his core is 200 Celsius. Touching Kai would result in a second degree burn.” Zane informed as his vision returned to normal yet the look of concern was easily spotted.
“What do we do?! His eyes are on fire!” Jay exclaimed causing everyone to look back at Kai, and indeed Kai’s eyes were now flames. The only sight of his pupils were the red dots hidden within the flames.
“We have to cool him down, now!” Lloyd yelled.
“On it.” Zane said before activating his own elemental powers, his body immediately dropping in temperature causing a wave of cold to crash against the heat. Everyone watched as Zane pretty much tackled Kai into a hug, steam rolled off the two covering the ninja’s from the others.
“Oh god, we can barely see them.” Nya grumbled.
“Do not worry, Kai has cooled down.” Pixal spoke, she had activated her own heat vision to monitor the two through the steam.
“That’s good.” Cole mumbled as the steam soon died down to reveal Zane holding an unconscious Kai. Everyone immediately rushed over, worried.
“Why is he unconscious?!” Jay exclaimed as Nya and Lloyd hovered next to Kai in worry.
“Do not threat, he isn’t hurt. He just fell unconscious due to the excessive use of his powers.” Zane informed and glanced down at his sleeping brother. His body wasn’t as cold as when he hugged Kai but cold enough to keep Kai at his normal body temperature, which still ran higher than most of them due to his element. The group watched as Kai seemed to snuggle deeper into Zane’s hold, almost like he was chasing the cold.
“Unlike the rest of us. Kai’s elemental powers are very strongly connected to his emotions. If he gets angry, his powers flare up and get angry with him. And if his powers get angry, he’ll get angry.” He explained and held Kai closer.
“Wait. If his powers get angry?” Jay questioned.
“Yes. His powers have emotions.”
Everyone put Pixal and Zane jumped at the new voice, they turned to see Master Wu smiling at them.
“You gotta stop sneaking up on us like that.” Lloyd mumbled.
“If I can sneak up on you then that means you aren’t training hard enough.” Wu huffed out.
“Ignoring that. Can you go back to Kai’s powers having emotions?” Nya asked, “Do our powers have emotions?”
“Come with me. I will tell you something but first, it’s best we put Kai to rest so Zane may have his arms free.” Wu said with a chuckle.
“I have no issue carrying Kai but I also do not mind placing him down.” Zane said.
“Very well, meet me in the living room.” Wu said, Zane nodded and left back inside to place Kai in bed as Wu himself walked inside towards the living space. The others all followed behind.
When Zane returned the group had all seated themselves so Zane found a spot next to Pixal, the two leaning against a wall as they took to their Sensei.
“The element of fire is one most in tune with the human body. My father even called it the heart of all elements.” Wu said gently.
“The heart?” Cole asked.
“Correct. The master of fire held a special connection with their element that no other master had. The connection of emotions. The flames within them would respond to their emotions and in return they’d respond to their flames emotions. As the master of fire’s, fire, was the only element that held human emotions.” Wu spoke.
“You’re saying, Kai’s fire can be happy, mad, sad or anxious. Stuff like that?” Lloyd asked.
“Correct. Kai’s fire is more than just that. My father believed that the master of fire’s flames were sentient. But he could never prove it himself.” Wu chuckled out. “Either way. It seems Kai’s anger triggered his powers and resulted in Kai’s body to overheat. If Zane hadn’t stepped in then we would have witnessed a Blue Flame Attack.”
“You’re dropping so much stuff on us. A Blue Flame Attack?” Jay asked.
“Correct. The master of fire can create blue flame. Which is the hottest flame known to mankind. Kai can create it too but to do so his body must go up to somewhere between 1,400 to 1,650 degrees Celsius.”
Everyone started at Master Wu like he was insane.
“Kai’s body can run that high?” Nya asked.
“Indeed. Kai can run as high as he pleases, I believe the highest known record a master of fire has run was…3,467 degrees Celsius.” Wu said, he smiled at his students shocked faces.
“But that is physically impossible. He would boil up all the blood within his body and die.” Zane exclaimed as both he and Pixal seemed unable to compute with the information they were given.
“For normal humans, yes. For Kai…it would just be a walk in the park.” Master Wu said with a grin.
“Wait isn’t lava like 1,200 Celsius. Does that mean Kai can like, swim in lava?” Jay asked jokingly but when Wu just stared at him blankly, his face dropped.
“You’re kidding. Kai can’t actually swim in lava, right?” Jay asked again.
“He can if he trust himself. His father would always hide from me deep in lava pools.” Wu said, laughing fondly at the memory as he left the room. Leaving six shocked and confused ninja alone.
When Kai awoke, he felt like he’d been dropped in lava then taken out and thrown into a mountain. He felt awful, and very very thirsty. With a groan he got up and out of bed, not really remembering how he got to bed since he last remembered training on the deck.
And being really fucking angry.
Either way, he ignored the anger that was slowly boiling up once again when he remembered his mission and slowly made his way out of his room and to the dinning room to which the kitchen was attached to. Upon entering he was met with the rest of his team
“Oh hey.” He said, his voice rough and scratchy causing him to wince. He immediately walked towards the sink to grab a glass of water, the greetings of the team ringing softly throughout the room.
He grabbed a glass and filled it up, almost to the edge before shutting the tap off and began to drink the water like a mad man.
“Hey Kai. Can I ask you something?” Jay asked. Kai tensed a bit, hoping Jay wouldn’t ask about the mission before letting out a hum as he turned to face Jay, well the others were all looking at him. He didn’t really like how Pixal was looking at him, it made him feel like he was about to be dissected. He continued drinking the water as Jay began to speak again.
“How would you feel if we threw you into lava?”
Kai choked.
That was the last thing he expected to be asked.
The water went down the wrong pipe, he slammed the glass on the nearby counter and began coughing. He heard someone get up before feeling a hand patting him back as he hacked up a lung. After a while of coughing, he calmed down yet his throat burned. He stood up straight and glanced at Cole, the one who was patting his back with a small thankful smile before he took in a deep breath and looked to Jay.
“Are you crazy!?” He exclaimed.
“Well we learned something and wanna try it.” Jay said with a shrug.
Kai narrowed his eyes.
“Are you tryna assassinate me so you can take Nya out on date’s without me bugging you?” He asked.
“What!?” Both Jay and Nya exclaimed.
“No, this is not an assassination attempt.” Zane reassured.
“Alright, good. Look, I’m exhausted so whatever new thing you learned, I don’t wanna hear it. If you need me, I’ll be in my room.” Kai grumbled, his eyes tired as he moved to leave the dinning area.
Everyone watched as Kai left. Grumbling angrily to himself yet they caught words like.
“Can you believe them?”
And
“I know, unbelievable.”
Words that sounded more than just angry grumbling but instead a conversation. The group glanced at one another with raised eyebrows before deciding to drop the topic for now. Kai did overheat himself today, the least they could do was leave him alone.
For now.
