Chapter Text
Evan ‘Buck’ Buckley-Nash has felt like an outsider his whole life, even before he presented as an omega. His parents might have been around during his childhood, but they weren’t truly there. If it wasn’t for his big sister Maddie, who is a beta, Buck isn’t sure he would have even lived long enough to present his secondary gender. He certainly would have been dead afterwards.
Then Maddie met Doug and left him alone with his parents. It wasn’t even a full week after Maddie had left that his dad had told him to get in the car. Not thinking anything of it, Buck put on his favorite sneakers and did as he was told. Looking back on it, Buck wishes he had known what was going to happen before he got in that car. He will never be able to forgive his dad for leaving him on that bus bench with his bookbag stuffed with some clothes. All of his belongings were bound to be in the trash by morning, and the thought of that sent Buck into a panic attack, causing him to start bawling.
He isn’t sure how long he sat there crying before a nice alpha couple found him. He will forever be grateful to Athena and Booby for finding him and taking him in. He doesn’t remember much of what happened for the first couple of weeks after they had found him. He knows now that he had been in shock during that time frame. He knows Athena got the help of the local police to take action against Buck’s parents, and he also knows Bobby had gone to his old home but found all of his things were long gone. It turns out Bobby and Athena had been in Hershey, Pennsylvania, on vacation when they spotted Buck, and even though they were both alphas with two kids already at home, they adopted him and took him home with them. Michael, an alpha, who is Athena’s ex and the father of her two kids, is understandably hesitant when he first finds out, but after hearing the whole story and meeting Buck, he is quick to accept him into their pack.
May, a future alpha, and Harry, another future alpha, seem to take to Buck quickly. In fact, it is May and Harry who come up with the nickname Buck when they notice how he doesn’t like to be called Evan. Buck was worried they might not accept him since he was already sixteen, but the whole pack accepted him, and he quickly felt right at home with his new pack. It might have taken Buck a while to accept he is wanted and loved, but he is forever grateful to his family for loving him as he is. Though there were a few times Athena threatened to strangle him for hurting himself, pulling dangerous stunts.
There were times when Buck felt bad for Athena and Bobby had to put up with for adopting him. Omegas are considered a rare thing as few exist, but male omegas are even rarer. Some people barely even remember they exist, but a lot of people think they are abnormal and shouldn’t exist. Once he was old enough for it to be safe, which is age eighteen, Buck asked Athena and Bobby to allow him to be on suppressants. They all did a lot of research and found a company that was started and run by omegas that put a lot of care into creating the best medicines for all omegas. Athena was hesitant at first as she never wanted Buck to feel like he needed to hide himself, but she eventually came around when she realized how hard it would be for Buck to get a job smelling like an omaga. The day Buck first got to use his suppressors is also the day he decided he wanted to join the Navy SEALs.
Buck won’t lie and say he wasn’t nervous about joining, but it felt like something he had to do. Athena and Bobby were both scared thinking about the danger he would be putting himself in, but they also knew they wouldn’t stop him. They both have dangerous jobs that allow them to help people, so they understand what he was feeling. Buck completed training and went on his first mission a the age of twenty, just a few days after his birthday. He spent the next five years as a skilled Navy SEAL before a mission went wrong, and he got discharged with a Navy Cross and Purple Heart. Bobby and Athena were so proud of him and stood by his side while he went through therapy for both his mental health and to regain full use of his right arm.
Buck struggled with the knowledge that he would never actively serve again, but he quickly got over it when Athena and Bobby brought up the idea of him becoming either a police officer, firefighter, or 911 operator. Buck took a while to think it over and finally started his training at the fire academy just in time for Maddie to suddenly show up in Los Angeles. It turned out she saw the news coverage about his time in the Navy SEALs and medals. She managed to track down which precinct Athena worked at, and Athena invited her to dinner. Buck was so happy to have his sister back in his life, and Athena made sure Doug would never bother her again, or so they think.
It was soon time for Buck to do his probationary year, and both he and Bobby were sad but understood he couldn’t do it at Bobby’s station, the 118. The chief was concerned it would be a conflict of interest, but after his year was up, he was transferred to the 118. Buck was nervous during his first days, but Hen, an alpha, and Chimney, a beta, the two paramedics, made him quickly feel right at home. After a particularly rough call, Bobby and Buck came clean to the two of them about Buck’s second gender. A few days afterwards, Hen and Chimney surprised Buck by showing they got permission from Bobby and the chief to turn an unused office at the station into a giant nest for those rough days for the small pack.
The station soon became a second home for Buck, and it was no surprise that he would often stop in on his rare days off when the others were working. So it should not have been a surprise for everyone to see Buck walk through the doors around lunchtime on the day that changed their lives in a big way.
