Work Text:
More and more people were getting sick with an unknown illness.
At first, it could just be mistaken as the common cold or cough, the victims displaying similar symptoms as the illnesses. Sore throat, headaches... Inability to breathe as easily.
But soon enough, everyone realized it wasn't something as simple as that. No, it just had to be something more complicated, something far more serious than anticipated.
It wasn't a simple cold or cough or anything like that, no.
It was something else. Something new. A horrifying type of new. It was never that easy.
And what is that "something new", you ask? Well of course, it's a new illness, that's what.
The illness is airborne, making it easy for anyone to get caught in it and make them sick easily if they were in the same vicinity.
The victims would be sluggish, losing more and more energy as the days passed by with no known treatment. It was discovered that they also experienced blood loss, despite the lack of open wounds or popped blood vessels.
Blood transfusions were highly needed in this case, lest they drop dead from right where they stand.
At this point of time, nobody knows yet just what exactly this illness was, how it was created, the full extent of what it did.
Everyone was required to go into lockdown. Obviously, everyone is understandably upset. It's only been... What, 2 years since the last pandemic happened? And then right after that, another one comes rearing its head right out of nowhere to fuck it up all over again. Back to being hermits they go, they supposed.
Well, they didn't have to worry any longer on what the illness was.
They'll learn what it was soon enough.
It won't be long.
. . . . . .
Oh, hi there.
Who is this, you might wonder? Well, they're nobody important really. They're just the host of what's actually important. Yeah, that's right, host. They're nothing more than a vessel. And really, it's not so bad. They're more useful like this. This is actually the first time they've ever felt useful before, to have a purpose. After all...
...
It's okay, you don't need to understand what they're saying right now. Or... Ever, really. Nothing they say is all that important.
They're not the one in the spotlight, after all.
Well, goodbye for now. They'll see you later... Probably. Hopefully not. Don't get them wrong, you seem like you'd be a lovely person to be around and talk to! It's just...
It's just...
...
. . . . . .
It's getting worse.
Lately, more and more people have gotten infected with the illness, and neither cure nor vaccine has been made as of currently. Every attempts have been met with failure. Everyone is getting restless.
There was a point in time where some unattended kids have snuck out of their homes, feeling suffocated being stuck inside all day long for weeks on end.
And then they were taken by the illness.
Slowly, the amount of people that piled up in the hospital increases.
Until one day, a patient dropped dead during a power outage. His body was discovered in his room, lying on the bed. His mouth had been stretched wide open, jaws unhinged and blood running down the sides of his pale face. Tear streaks stained the undersides of his eyes, which were blown wide open.
His canines were missing from his row of teeth, and weren't found anywhere in the room. However, it was dismissed as unimportant.
Further investigation of the body revealed that all of the color from his skin was gone, and the body was also too thin, hollowed out cheeks and bones visible.
In other patient rooms, they found more bodies. Every single body shared this; color gone from their skins, and tear stained faces.
Some had holes on their stomachs, a ribcage or some other bone or organ inside missing. Others with blood running down their mouths, teeth, tongue, whatever else in there missing.
One body had its head torn open, brain missing.
Another one didn't have skin at all.
Every single one died with something missing.
It left all of them horrified and confused. They couldn't even check the security cameras for the footage because of the black out.
Unknown to everyone, those very same missing organs, bones, and teeth were now somewhere else, walking around.
. . . . . .
The lung looked around, finding itself in an... Alleyway, yes, that's what it was called. It glanced back behind itself at the host it crawled out of, long dead and no longer breathing. Briefly, it took a moment to mentally thank its host for... Well, hosting it of course. After all, it wouldn't be here without its host now, would it?
It would only be fair to thank its host. It's only polite, right?
A smile grazed the lung's face as it looked up at the blue sky, looking at the clouds in wonder.
Before hissing in pain and shielding its eyes away when the clouds moved on, exposing the bright merciless orb of light, the tubes on top of its head briefly hissing like a kettle with it. Right, the sun exists. That sucks. Its eyes hurt now.
Rubbing its eyes with a paw, the lung slowly crept through the alleyways, farther away from its host's body and the light. Where there is light, there are humans. Its best to be away from humans... For now at least.
