Work Text:
“Akaashi hurry up!”
“You’ve lost all of your lives why are you rushing me?”
“I HATE THIS GAME”
It’s a crisp Saturday evening, and spring break has hit for all of the kids in the room. Two of them being at the end of theirs. Kuroo and Bokuto have had a longer break and started theirs earlier. Curtesy of them being in college.
Akaashi and Kenma are in their final years of high school, hitting another milestone and moving into a different era of human development.
They’re both crammed with finals prep and getting ready for college. But Kenma doesn’t mind it sometimes, it’s preparing him for a busy and hectic work life. He doesn’t necessarily want a career like that, but he planned to have a bountiful and successful career. So if it turns out to be mentally and physically taxing, it won’t exactly be unexpected.
But that didn’t matter currently. The only thing that mattered currently was Akaashi defeating the chase scene in Bowser’s castle. Well atleast that’s what mattered to 3/4 of the boys.
Tucked into the back of the room on the couch is Kenma. Kenma has been feeling a whirlwind of emotions lately. Mainly stemming from the big changes that have happened and are soon to happen in his life.
I mean his best-friend who used to be attached to him is now only available one day every few weeks, he’s almost a graduate and basically co-captain of his team,(something he NEVER imagined), and the biggest change in Kenma’s opinion, is his relationship with Shoyo.
After exchanging numbers and chatting for more than half a year, Shoyo and Kenma started to meet up on weekends when they had the chance. By the end of Kenma’s second year and after the dumpster battle, there was a significant amount of tension between them. They’d ingrained it into their routine to meet up with the other every Saturday. It fluctuated, Kenma would come to Miyagi if Shoyo’s mom was working late and the younger boy was designated babysitter, or Shoyo would come to Tokyo if they wanted to do more “exhilarating” activities.
Atleast that’s how Shoyo describes it, Kenma was surprised he knows that word and used it in a grammatically correct way.
But, near the end of June the boys had a rough patch. Kenma started to realize he depended on Shoyo, and that he had big feelings for the boy. He didn’t want to burden him so he naturally tried to burry his crush.
Without noticing he started to pull away and stopped answering the other boys texts. He hated it, but he hated the thought of Shoyo knowing his true feelings more. Until one day Kenma wakes up feeling the worst he’s felt in a while.
He felt like his eye bags weighed a hundred pounds, his hair was dry as hay and he’s wearing the same hoodie he put on Wednesday. Oh yeah, he’s not exactly sure what day it is. That’s when he checks his phone and a light bulb turns on.
It’s Sunday. This is the first time he spent a Saturday without Shoyo since February. Once that realization hit he paused and slumped down on his bed.
Huh.
Maybe his feelings for Shoyo are bigger than he thought.
When he scrambles to open his chat with Shoyo he scans over the messages he sadly ignored these past couple days.

———
By the time Kenma remembered he never told Shoyo he wasn’t going to make it yesterday, he was already out the door and on the way to the train station.
He bought the first ticket to Miyagi, anxiously paced around for 30 minutes, and practically sprinted to his seat on the train.
He spent those two hours on the train thinking of how he was going to reassure Shoyo that he did nothing wrong, and thinking of how he was probably going to have to tell Shoyo about his feelings.
Kenma felt surprisingly calm about that. He never wanted to feel like how he felt that weekend ever again.
The worst thing that could happen wasn’t Shoyo saying no, Kenma wasn’t worried about that.
This worst thing is if Shoyo wants to stop being friends.
If he has to sever his connection with Shoyo he has no idea what he’d do. It’s not an attachment, it’s more like a want. A want to be in Shoyo’s presence.
After coming back to this planet the blonde realizes he’s in-front of Shoyo’s door and his hand is already in the motion of knocking.
“Ah fuck.” Kenma thinks. “It’s go time.”
He sighs and starts to straighten out his hoodie but gets startled by a small voice, and then a bigger voice.
“Cominggg!”
“Natsu do not open that door do you hear me?!”
It’s insane, just hearing his voice made Kenma’s knees buckle for a second.
“That’s weird.” He thinks again. “This is so weird.”
Before he can catch his breath the door opens and reveals Shoyo at the end of his summer. He has a tank top on that has an obnoxious decal of Kurby on it, stickers litter his face and arms which match the barrettes clipped all around his head. His hair seems to be even more vibrant and there’s a patch of red on his nose bridge. Kenma’s guessing he dragged Natsu outside for some summer sun. The boy seems to have no problem with the get-up until he realizes who’s at the door.
“KENM-“ That’s all he hears before the door is slammed in his face. At first he starts panicking, worried that he really upset Shoyo and wondering if he should’ve contacted the boy first before coming.
By the time his palms start to sweat the door swings open again and Shoyo’s cheeks match his nose now.
“H-hi Kenma! Are you okay?” He let out a sigh he didn’t know he was holding. He still doesn’t understand how simply being in Shoyo’s presence can manipulate his whole mood. But if anyone would be able to effect him like that of course it would be Shoyo.
“Shoyo I-“ Kenma stops and cringes at the way his voice sounds. It’s gravely and dry, his voice cracked and caught in his throat. He looks up to meet Shoyo’s eyes and all he sees is warm brown eyes riddled with concern.
Kenma can see his hands shake as he puts them on his face. They both sit there in silence.
It’s tense but Shoyo did not rush him in the slightest. He feels a light touch on his wrist and lets his hand be taken. When his hands fall all he sees is Shoyo’s face, still riddled with stickers, and the vibrant smile on his face. It’s smaller than his usual one though, more private.
“Soooo….you wanna come inside?” He finishes his offer by holding up a popsicle and holding it out towards Kenma.
Soda flavor. The popsicles Shoyo’s mom buys come with a regular flavor and a melon flavor.
Shoyo tends to bring them to their meetups, Kenma doesn’t like the regular flavor, he’s never been a fan but Shoyo loves the melon flavor. So Kenma lied and endured eating the regular flavor everytime. But now when he sees the flavor it reminds him of Shoyo and he’s started to eat it even when he’s not with the other boy.
Looking at the popsicle now makes his eyes start to sting, so he quickly nods and let’s Shoyo lead him into his house.
Natsu gets the hint and (thankfully) retired to her bedroom until the boys were done. They talked for 3 hours, starting by just sitting there in silence for 30 minutes before Kenma got the courage to reveal the truth. The entire time Shoyo kept reassuring him that he can take his time and he’s going to be here the entire time, and he was. They stayed planted in that same spot on Shoyo’s cushy couch until the end of their conversation, which ends with a kiss. Kenma didn’t notice Shoyo hadn’t let go of his hand until he had to let go so he could cup Shoyo’s face to pull him closer.
Kenma left that night feeling a thousand times lighter with a melted ramune popsicle in his pocket and a cheery boyfriend.
So for the past 9 months Kenma has been in a committed relationship and honestly he couldn’t be any happier. They’ve both had major changes to work through separately and changes they need to work through together. But Shoyo is a very gracious and understanding partner, and he’s very open with his emotions. Shoyo loves to talk, especially to Kenma, so it wasn’t hard for him to state any of his discomforts in the relationship.
Kenma not so much. It didn’t take him long to get comfortable though, Shoyo is very reassuring, kinda aggressive with it.
So here we are back in the present!
Kenma is aware he has more pressing matters he could be worrying about. I mean shit he still doesn’t have his dorm registry filled out. He shouldn’t even be worrying at all currently, he’s safely nestled onto a couch with his best friends playing video games. This should be Kenma’s dream.
But all he’s dreaming about is Shoyo.
Before spring break started mid terms were also on schedule. Shoyo had been meeting up with Tsukishima to study on weekends so they haven’t been able to meet. Which was fine because Kenma was busy himself, that didnt help the nagging ache in his chest though.
Shoyo’s spring break is a week after his, there are only three days where Nekoma and Karasuno’s spring break schedules overlap. I.E that means Kenma has not seen Shoyo in more than three weeks, he’s only going to be able to see him a maximum of three days over his break and after it ends, he has to keep cramming for finals. He has no idea when he is going to see his boyfriend next and he is over it.
He’s always had an intense feeling when he wasn’t with Shoyo.
He used to just miss him, wish he was still playing games with him. Then it started to morph into a full body feeling. He would start getting irritated when he couldn’t contact Shoyo for a certain amount of time. His mood would changed based on if he was able to call Shoyo this morning, or not. It was concerning but he wasn’t alone with the feeling.
Even before the two had started dating they introduced each-other to their friend groups. Naturally over time he exchanged his email with Kageyama. He doesn’t message him often, their chats mainly consist of Kageyama asking questions on his technique, or rarely he gets a lengthy email about some random math subject.
But one time after a long day of practice, Kenma finally gets the privilege of going to check his phone. He sees the usual spam from Shoyo, he’s used to that. But in the sea of new mail he spots Kageyama.
< Hi Kenma can you respond to Hinata, he’s getting all pissy at practice and it’s messing me up -_- >
Kenma chuckles, amused that Shoyo would care that much about getting a message back but then he realizes he’s the exact same way. That’s what really pushed Kenma to start sharing his feelings. Having the knowledge that Shoyo felt the same emotions as him at times, made him feel safe.
So there’s really nothing stopping Kenma from texting Shoyo right now.
Except for the fact that he’s texted the other 35 times in the last hour. He hasn’t gotten a response back and he knows it’s because Shoyo is probably elbow deep in a textbook currently but he can’t help it.
“KENMA!”
“Don’t scream at me.”
“Well then answer me the first time I call you! We’re leaving if you even care.” Bokuto rolls his eyes at the blonde and pointedly snatches his drink off the table.
“Bye Kenma, thanks for having us”
“Duh, my parents are gone till tuesday and i’ve already been alone for a week.” Kenma sighs and stands up to walk them out the door.
He feels tired after Akaashi and Bokuto leave, but not physically. Even if he wanted to be tired that’s eliminated when he walks back into the living room.
“HAA-!” Is all Kenma heard before an expensive sequined pillow was thrown at his face.
“Kuroo!” He groans, pressing on his eye which got hit.
“I got your eye?! Oh shit-“
“How about i’m sorry?!”
“I’m sorry.”
“You do to much bro get ready for bed.”
Kuroo put on the fakest pout and walked out of the room like an injured puppy. After mumbling insults under his breath Kenma starts to clean up and is again left alone with his thoughts about Shoyo.
“Should I call him? Shoyo would never mind…but he is studying. Maybe i’ll ask Tsukishima…I don’t have his email. I’ll ask Kageyama! I wonder if he’s awake right now, wait. If it’s this late is Shoyo just asleep and i’ve been spamming him?!” Kenma turns to look at the time but feels his hands are wet and slippery. Instead of being in the living room, Kenma is at the end of the pile of dishes he’s created these last few days but didn’t feel like cleaning.
He’s happy he got it done but feels a little disoriented. What fucking time is it? 11:15..not too late but still, a reasonable time to be in bed by. Yes, be in bed, Kenma just needs to go to sleep. Just needs to let his mind go to bed.
When he walks into his bedroom he’s met with the glorious sight of Kuroo sprawled out on his floor.
Kenma’s bed is technically big enough for both of them, but Kuroo likes to spread out every limb when he sleeps so that got shut down real quick.
So instead he gets his own futon, and from what Kenma can see he has no complaints.
The only sound in the house other than his fan blasting is Kuroo’s snoring.
After maneuvering around Kuroo’s mess of limbs and flopping onto his bed, Kenma decides he needs something to distract him from his thoughts. He snatches his phone, moves around Kuroo again and safely makes it to his desk across the room.
He checks his phone one more time to see if Shoyo replied or even read his mail yet, of course his inbox is empty.
Kenma sighs and sets his phone face down. That’s when he declares he is going to replay the walking dead and won’t stop until he finishes or passes out of sleep exhaustion.
He only gets 30 minutes in until he’s checking his phone again. He’s not irritated about it anymore, he’s just sad.
He really misses Shoyo tonight and he doesn’t know why. Maybe it’s the fact that he’s been alone in his house for a whole week now, but he had friends over today and that feeling still didn’t leave.
“I’ll just text him one more time”
———
< Shoyo?? >
———
He pauses for a minute, then two., and still no response. He goes to put down his phone, admitting defeat, when a specific ringtone fills the room.
That’s Shoyo’s ringtone.
Kenma jumps out of his chair and sprints out of his room. He closes his door and puts his back against the wall just staring.
He puts a shaky thumb on the enter button of his phone and brings it up to his ear.
“Ughhh…Kenma?” As if he’s reliving that day infront of Shoyo’s house, his knees go weak once more. He feels his back slide down the wall and his legs touch the floor, but all he’s focused on is Shoyo’s voice.
Kenma can tell he just woke up, he started the call groaning, Kenma’s imagining him on his bed, arms spread and back arched , limbs entangled with his sheets.
He sighs, long and hard.
“Kenma? are you mad I didn’t answer or something?!”
“No! no i’m just..happy to hear your voice.” He can hear Shoyo’s smile through the phone.
“Aughhh..I just woke up I can’t handle you sweet talking me.”
“I’m telling the truth.” He hears Shoyo giggle.
“I know you are..” They sit in silence for a second, you can hear Shoyo shift around in his bed occasionally but that’s it.
“Shoyo?”
“Hm”
“Are you awake now?”
“…for the most part”
Kenma tries to catch his breath and gather his thoughts. It’s not helping hearing Shoyo talk like this, he wishes he was next to him in bed, just sleeping peacefully. But he can’t.
“What’s wrong you keep sighing? you sound like a puppy”
“Can you come over?” There’s more silence.
“What?”
“Can you come over.”
“Kenma its 12am.”
“Please Shoyo..” He hears a huff and a squeak on the other end, followed by a long sigh.
“You know I want to..but i’m the only one here with Natsu.”
“When does your mom get home?”
“Mmm usually 12:45-1:00”
“Bet” After that all Shoyo hears is Kenma’s fingers against the buttons of his phone.
“I bought a ticket for 1:15, your house isn’t far from the station.”
“What! Kenma!”
“It’s only a five minute bike ride.”
“I didn’t think you were this serious”
“Of course I am, call your mom and ask her.”
“I-“
“Shoyo..”
“Ugh! Fine i’ll let you know what she says.” After a few more grumbles Shoyo hangs up and Kenma feels electric.
He’s practically dancing through the halls of his house in joy. It’s nothing much, he’s probably going to sleep here and then leave tomorrow afternoon but still, it’s more than enough for Kenma.
He sends the ticket to Shoyo, making sure to quadruple check that it’s Miyagi to Tokyo and not the other way around. After that he sets off to tackle the mess his friends left in the living room.
I mean Kuroo’s here, they can’t be lollygagging in his room while he’s asleep.
So he cleans up the living room, throws in a load a laundry and checks the time. It’s 12:30 and he’s terrified when he thinks he hasn’t gotten a reply from Shoyo but thankfully he was just scrolling too fast.
———
< SHE SAID YES!! :D >
< She should be home by 1 >
< UGH I wish u scheduled it earlier i’m too restless now… >
< It’s only 15 minutes -_- >
< EXACTLY >
< btw Kuroo’s here >
< he’s asleep though >
< oh •_• >
< don’t worry he’ll leave early tomorrow >
< r your parents still gone?? >
< yes.. >
< ;) >
< get out of here kid >
< I HATE WHEN YOU CALL ME THAT >
< i’m aware >
———
Kenma thoroughly enjoys talking to his boyfriend. It genuinely makes his day, and it’s nice to know that Shoyo is just as excited as he is.
———
< oh em gee i’m coming to ur house in middle of the night AND ur parents aren’t home?? >
< were soooo teenager kenma ;))))))) >
< you’re so corny >
< HEY >
———
Kenma chats with Shoyo until he gets frantic messages saying he’s about to miss the train. He then has to remind Shoyo that it comes at 1:15 not 1:05. After that mess was settled, he quietly gathered his things and went to shower. He didn’t expect anything to happen tonight, especially because Kuroo was there, but still. He wanted to feel presentable for his boyfriend, even if it’s the middle of the night.
After he’s finished Kenma goes to change the load of laundry he put in and after he sits on the couch he starts to realize how tired he is. He wanted to stay up for Shoyo but he still has atleast 2 hours before he gets here.
The last thing Kenma remembers before dozing off is Shoyo sending him a picture of himself on the train.
———
He feels his eyes drift open and after he remembered he fell asleep, Kenma immediately shoot’s up and grabs his phone. Oh. It’s 3:00.
Shoyo messaged that he had 2 more stops until he’s at the station near Kenma’s house and he contemplated running there to meet Shoyo.
He told him so, Shoyo firmly denied it.
He fell back onto his couch and he can feel the blissed out smile on his face.
He starts making his way around the house, checking for any stray trash lying around or any objects out of place. He knew Shoyo wouldn’t care but still, he needed to do something to calm down.
As he’s bringing his laundry out of the basement he hears a small knock on the door and he practically runs to it.
Kenma knows he has a smile on his face when he opens the door, he knows it gets bigger when his eyes fall on Shoyo.
He’s standing there with a backpack over one shoulder, a blanket over the other and a variety of snacks in his hands.
Wow, Kenma really knows how to pick them.
Shoyo’s smile is blinding currently, he practically squeaks and rushes to take his shoes off and put down his stuff. Kenma is already chuckling at him and barely gets to close the door before Shoyo is on him.
He crashes into Kenma, pushing a grunt out him but he just laughs in response. Shoyo nuzzles the crook of Kenma’s neck like he’s trying to burrow into it before sighing and finally relaxing against him. Kenma is hoping Shoyo doesn’t hear his heart doing backflips in his chest.
“Missed you…” Shoyo whispers into Kenma’s neck and oh god. If only he knew how much Kenma missed him. He shudders a bit, his pulse going faster before wrapping his arms more securely around Shoyo’s waist and pulling him close. He sighs, choosing his response carefully.
“Words can’t describe how much i’ve missed you, Shoyo.” He feels him smile against him before gently puckering his lips and kissing his neck.
Ah..this is what Kenma needed.
He couldn’t even describe the feeling he had earlier if he tried, it didn’t matter. He was with Shoyo now, and they had the rest of the night to spend together.
He pulls Shoyo’s hair, which makes him giggle and push into Kenma more, causing both of them to fall into a fit of laughter.
Shoyo’s giggles die down and they both stay there for a bit , enjoying the others embrace before Shoyo pulls back. His arms lovingly slide up Kenma’s back and over his shoulder until they rest around his neck.
They’re both smiling when they meet the other eyes. Kenma could get lost in Shoyo’s smile, there’s many variations of it. There’s the smile Shoyo gives when he’s overjoyed, there’s the smile Shoyo gives when he’s challenged in something, and there’s the smile Shoyo gives Kenma.
It’s full of all the love and joy in Shoyo’s regular smile, but as he said before, it’s more private, reserved only for Kenma.
“Hi..” He’s smiling but he’s practically whispering.
“Hi Shoyo” Kenma is also smiling.
They just stare at eachother for a moment. Kenma wants a kiss but he doesn’t expect one, not yet atleast. Shoyo’s going to make him wait, and he’s surprisingly okay with that.
He laughs again, this is another big change for Kenma. He’s always laughing when he’s with Shoyo, it’s like they’re drunk.
“Sooo, how have you been?” Shoyo asks, his hand moving to hold Kenma’s.
“Lonely.” He answers honestly, that pulls a frown to Shoyo’s lips.
“Aw Kenma.., is it because your parents aren’t here?” Kenma chuckles at that, I mean yeah he misses his parents but he sees them everyday.
“Sure, I guess you could say that.” Shoyo just stares at him after he says that, Kenma just raises an eyebrow at him, waiting for a response.
“Are you tired?”
“Mm a little”
“Then let’s go to sleep!” Shoyo grabs Kenma’s hand and starts to lead him towards the ginormous couch in his living room.
“Noo..wait.” He plants his feet and pulls Shoyo’s arm, making him turn towards him. He slides his other hand on Shoyo’s hip, like it’s natural.
“Huh? Why?”
“Um I want to spend time with you? Hello?” Shoyo cackles in response to that, he had to remind the boy that Kuroo is only one floor up.
He just flops onto Kenma, and cups his cheeks.
“Ohh Kenma…you’re so sweet!” He punctuates it by grabbing Kenma’s cheek and pulling it like an annoying aunt would.
Kenma protests and starts trying to grab Shoyo but he is extremely stubborn, so he has be a bit more forceful.
Once he realized he pulled Shoyo a little hard he immediately stops and goes to apologize, but Shoyo is just looking at him with that dorky smile and bright red cheeks.
He just laughs, letting Kenma manipulate his arms however he wants. Then he slowly brings his face up to Kenma’s.
At first he just slowly brushes his lips over Kenma’s, making him start grabbing Shoyo’s forearms. He just lets out a pleasant hum and lets the other continue his shenanigans for a bit longer.
Once he’s had enough he slides his hands up, one going to Shoyo’s nape and the other rests on his collarbone. He wanted to wait, but shit he’s only so strong.
He slides his lips into Shoyo’s, finally connecting in the way he’s been waiting for.
Shoyo’s told Kenma once before that he gets lightheaded when Kenma puts his tongue into his mouth. Of course Kenma stored that into his mental bank and now he caters to Shoyo’s every need when they’re making out.
His hands grip onto Kenma’s hips, flexing with restlessness. Shoyo tends to get very excited when they kiss, creating this endless battle of who gets control.
Kenma’s won tonight, mainly because he caught Shoyo off guard but he couldn’t wait. Every slick remark and heavenly sound that comes out of that mouth has been mocking him, taunting him. Shoyo’s lips are perfect. Kenma loves that they’re bigger than his, they’re usually chapped but Kenma can taste the artificial strawberry flavor.
He pulls back and rubs his lips together for a second, then he’s smiling.
“You pervert, you never put on chapstick.”
“I’m a pervert? You’ve been looking at my lips since I walked through the door. It’s pathetic really.” His words are full of malice but still he’s adjusting his arm around Kenma. Pulling them even closer somehow, with the biggest smile on his face.
Kenma pulls him in again, he can’t get enough of him. He never really cared for kissing in his past relationships, which has only been two. Shoyo didn’t care for it much either at first, his only experience was with a friend in middle school when they were both curious.
But after they got together Kenma realized how intimate the task is. He didn’t realize at first, I mean their first kiss was after a rushed goodbye at a training camp.
He did start to realize though when they would be alone in his room, on his bed. It’s was much more personal than doing it in some storage closet or the locker room.
Shoyo also really liked kissing Kenma. He told him once that he could thinks he could go for hours. Kenma grimaced at the thought but then when he started to think about it, the idea was brilliant.
They could do that now, that was kinda Kenma’s plan until he feels Shoyo pull away. He immediately tries chasing after him, placing one peck after another but that just makes Shoyo laugh.
Then he grabs Kenma’s chin and holds his hand up in a ‘listen’ type of motion.
He hears a faint groan and then the familiar footsteps of Kuroo, and then the sound of his bathroom door closing.
After that the only sound they can hear is their heavy breathing.
“See..it’s time for bed.” He gives Shoyo a defeated smile back, and lets the boy drag him to the couch.
Once Kenma sits down Shoyo immediately grabs the blanket he brought, slots his body next to Kenma.
He also used to not care for physical touch in his other relationships, they would hold hands and cuddle. But he always felt like it was a forced act like ‘oh we’re dating so we have to do these things.’
But with Shoyo, he has the constant want to touch him anytime he’s around, and not in a weird way. He just doesn’t understand why he wouldn’t be touching Shoyo if he’s able to. He takes every opportunity he can get when they’re together.
“Oh..yeah I forgot to tell you.” Shoyo’s voice sounds distracted and tired. He can tell he’s dozing off, his hands are loosely playing with the ends of Kenma’s hair.
“My train doesn’t come until 4:00 tomorrow”
“WHAT!” They both shoot up, Kenma because he’s surprised, and Shoyo because he is extremely loud.
He whips his body around and puts one hand over Kenma’s mouth, and one over his to muffle his laughter.
Kenma just moves Shoyo’s hands and goes to hug him. That only makes the boy laugh more, he snorts a bit when Kenma pulls them to lay down.
“Ughhh i’m so happy, I felt like I was going to pass out i’m so tired.” Shoyo just laughs in response and pinches the tip of Kenma’s nose.
“Mhmm, now shhh i’m tired too.”
Kenma pauses and lets Shoyo get comfortable on his chest. He doesn’t know why but his chest feels extremely hot, like boiling hot. So much so that he doesn’t even hesitate with his next words.
“Hah..I really think I love you Shoyo.” His head whips up, his eyes are crazy right now.
It’s not the first time they’ve said I love you. That was after a fight they had, about Kenma going to college. Yes it might not be there first time, but Kenma can count how many times they both said it on his hands. It still gives them both a shock when the other says it. They know time will mature the reaction, but it’s still early.
Shoyo slides his hands up to cover his eyes, and all Kenma can see is his huge smile and red cheeks. But then he almost choked when he sees his lip quiver and then he bursts into tears.
“Shoyo im sorry wha-“
“Do you know how much I missed you Kenma? I hate that we haven’t been able to see eachother lately..” He pauses and another sob slips out. Kenma just hugs him and whispers random things in his ear, mainly about how much he’s missed him.
“Ughh…I love you so much Kenma..” His voice is tired and watery, and Kenma’s shoulder is supporting his head. He just sits there, occasionally running his fingers through Shoyo’s mop of hair and tickling his scalp.
He can feel his breathing even out, and is unsurprised at the soft snoring that follows later.
He’s feels eerily calm, he imagines him and Shoyo as the only people left on this planet. Just confined to the walls of his dark living room, he likes the idea much more than he thought he would.
———
Kuroo wakes up and peers out the window, he can’t tell if it’s the middle of the night or early morning. He doesn’t exactly care either, he’s way to comfortable.
After waking up last night and realizing Kenma wasn’t in bed, Kuroo did the thing any best-friend would do and decided to keep it warm until he gets back.
He can hear shuffling and drawers being opened, he assumes it’s his best-friend until he sees a flash of orange run by.
He whips his head up, startled by the intruder, but then he relaxes when he realizes who it is.
Shoyo, in the midst of getting dressed, noticed the new presence in the room and turned and made eye contact with Kuroo.
“Sorry Kuroo! Just go back to sleep.” The boy walks up, grabs something off the nightstand, and places his hand on Kuroo’s forehead.
Oh yeah , Kuroo can go back to sleep. He seems to welcome the idea with open arms because he lets the slight pressure from Shoyo’s hand guide his head back onto the pillow.
‘Ahh I love sleep…’ That’s all that crosses Kuroo’s mind before he hears the door shut and footsteps fade down the hallway.
His mind is quiet for a second, his muscles relaxing back into the mattress, but then he shoots up again.
‘Why the hell is shrimpy here??’ With that realization he grumbles and finally forces himself out of bed. His phone says it’s only 6:00am, but it’s a 2 hour drive back to his dorm. So he decides to get ready for that venture now.
After doing his morning routine, he heads downstairs and finds Hinata awake on the couch, with Kenma asleep, his head resting on one of Shoyo’s thighs.
“When’d you get here?” The statement pops Shoyo’s bubble and he jumps a bit, causing them both to laugh.
“A few hours ago, Kenma basically made me.” He playfully rolls his eyes and lets his gaze drift down to Kenma. He’s sitting crisscrossed and Kenma has one arm hooked under his leg, and the other wrapped around his inner thigh.
“That’s not surprising.” He sits across from Hinata, the other boy unconsciously offers Kuroo some of what he’s eating. It’s a fruit bowl, Kuroo doesn’t know how he found the stuff to make that in this house but he accepts it either way.
“Hm? Why?”
“Kenma’s been extra bitchy lately, you’ve been busy huh?” He questions before popping some of the fruit into his mouth.
“Mm yeah…i’ve been having to cram for midterms every weekend.”
“I know, Tsukki always messages me complaining about you”
“What! What did he say-“ He then processes Kuroo’s information and turns to him with a devilish smile.
“You still have his email?” Kuroo looks like he’s been caught.
“Yeah..so what”
“Nothing, it’s just…interesting.” With that he grabs his fruit bowl back and directs his gaze to the tv, not wanting to press Kuroo anymore.
“Leave me alone man.”
“I didn’t say anything!” Kuroo then pushes himself off of the couch and goes to grab his stuff.
When Shoyo notices he has more than one bag with him he offers to help but Kuroo just denies and ruffles his hair.
“I gotta start the drive back, bye kid.”
“What is up with you and Kenma? Did you make him start calling me that?”
“Mmmaybe.” Hinata just rolls his eyes.
“Bye Kuroo.
After the door shuts he goes back to watching his show until he hears a grumble by his side.
“Are you awake?”
“Who was that?” Kenma’s voice is strained and hoarse, but Shoyo still enjoys it. He used his elbows to crawl further into Shoyo, his arms taking purchase around his waist.
“Mm just Kuroo, don’t worry.” He starts combing his hands through the others hair, he gets a long sigh in response. Then Kenma continues to burry his head into Shoyo’s side.
He feels Kenma’s hand slide lower, and then up again, this time under the fabric of his shirt.
Shoyo just sighs and lets Kenma do what he wants, letting the heated feeling it causes spread throughout his body. It’s honestly relaxing.
After a moment he feels the weight of Kenma’s head shift to his thigh, and when he looks down he meets Kenma’s tired, hooded eyes.
“Wanna go back to bed?” It’s a stupid question really.
“Ooh of course.” He immediately lets Kenma drag and lay down his body however he wants. He pulls Shoyo down and spreads his legs so he can fit in between.
He lets his head fall heavy on Shoyo’s chest, specifically on-top of his heart.
“…I love you.” He says it like he doesn’t know Kenma feels the same way. He just tilts his head up, his cheeks flushed red and a rare smile adores his face.
Shoyo also starts blushing. Kenma just leaned up, and pecked him on the nose.
“I love you too Shoyo.” With that he fully laid down and went back to sleep.
Shoyo’s going to need a second though, his hearts going to fast.
