Work Text:
Kaworu stood atop the diving tower in much the same way like he had sat perched on the headless statue when Shinji first met him at lake Ashi. The light filtering through the roof panes gave him a surreal, otherworldly aura; in an elegant arc, he dove head first into the pool, disappearing from Shinji's sight in a splash, only to resurface and shake the water out of his hair in a shower of brilliantly shining droplets. Scans had found no trace of angelic properties within him after his rejection and fall, and yet the rainbow refracting around him made Kaworu look divine all the same. Shinji remembered all too well how nervous he had been when he first met Kaworu, his presence soothing him when he was near the lowest point he had ever been at, the flutter in his chest that Shinji didn't know what to do with, the glances he found himself unwittingly sneaking at his body.
Shinji was glad that he was no longer the person he had been then. When Kaworu resurfaced right before him on the shallow end of the pool that he was relaxing in, Shinji did not hesitate to hold him, the lukewarm water displaced by the feeling of Kaworu's skin; his lips were slim, firmer than Rei's but softer than Asuka's. Even now, Shinji got a little weak in his knees being held like this, Kaworu's arms closing behind his back; he closed his eyes and mirrored the motion, resting their foreheads against another once their kiss broke.
Kaworu separated from their embrace with a wink, leaving a content warmth in Shinji's chest, a lingering reminder of a moment that had only been theirs.
