Work Text:

Red pushes the door open with his shoulder after fumbling with the keys for an embarrassing amount of time, letting it shut behind him as he heads to the kitchen to drop off the bags of groceries. The kitchen is in slight disarray, as it was left as it was since that morning, and well, for the past two days. He lets out a heavy sigh at the sight of the dishes in the sink, and the many empty mugs cluttering the already small counterspace. He sets down the bags, focusing on putting the items away first. It doesn't take him too long, moving to start cleaning up, starting with the dishes. As the sink fills, he gathers everything that needs washing, giving the counters a quick wipe before setting to the task.

He's maybe a third of the way in, when Dust wanders into the kitchen, coming up behind him and pulling him into a soft hug. Red can't help the small smile that comes on his face, turning and meeting Dust in a quick kiss, before focusing back on his task.

"how's your day been?" Dust asks, lingering against Red for another moment, then moves away to start on dinner.

"oh, y'know, th' usual. had t' beat up 'few fuckers, but that ain't new." he responds, and Dust replies with a hum, pulling out some containers of leftovers and checking their consumablity. "what 'bout ya?"

"oh, had some rich asshole call to get a custom, "super cool and neat" prosthetic made. the only reason i even agreed is because he didn't even try to haggle the ridiculous price i gave him." Dust huffs in amusement at recalling the event, but it quickly turns into a scowl at opening one container that had a mysterious, awful smelling mystery food in, or at least, what used to be edible food. He empties it out, before putting the container at the sink for Red to wash.

"you okay with fried rice for dinner?"

"sure, sounds nice."

The night slowly drags on, with the two skeletons now sitting on the couch held together by ducktape and staples, nursing their bowls of warm fried rice, huddled up close under a blanket. The city is bustling outside, never really seeming to rest, no matter what time of day it is.

"you know, i miss having you here and working with you." Dust remarks after a while, picking at a suspiciously green something in his bowl.

"yeah, me too, but we gotta lay low fer a while, y'know that." Red sighs, nuzzling a bit closer to Dust, who frowns.

"why should we? everywhere sucks, and it's not like we can't escape prison." he mutters angrily, stabbing at a piece of meat like it owed him money.

"sure, but if we kept constantly bein' locked up by th' cops, who's gonna watch over Bingus? 'nd none of our contacts would wanna talk t' us no more, we'd be too much risk fer 'em. 'nd we'd also lose the 'partment-"

"yeah yeah alright, you made your point." Dust sighs heavily, letting the anger fizzle out into a low simmer, his body relaxing more against Red's. Said skeleton lets out a sigh of his own, wrapping one arm around Dust, his empty bowl held in his other hand.

"ya know i would love t' spend more time wit ya 'nd create things again, but fer now, we lay low. play house fer a while." Dust scoffs in amusement at the last part, Red grinning softly as he places a quick kiss on Dust's skull.

"imma get some more food." he says and gets up, and Dust only has a moment to lament his lonesomeness on the couch, when the very questionable looking cat (it is a cat, right? Rats don't get that big) hops onto the couch, making a sound akin to a purr and a growl, and Dust rolls his eyelights as he scoops the permanently frazzled looking animal into his arms, giving them the attention they demand, making sure to keep his bowl out of the Bingus-consumption-range. Red comes back, cuddling up to his boyfriend, also keeping his food safe from the absolute creature in Dust's lap, and Dust can't help but smile softly. Maybe laying low for a while will be nice. Yes, he thinks, especially if he can have moments of peace like this.
