Work Text:
Runaway star, runaway star, the moon asks,
Where are you running to? What are you running from?
Without pausing, the star answers
I'm running from boredom
I'm running from entropy
I'm running from stagnation
I'm running from rot and decay
I'm running from death itself
The moon pauses to think for a long time. Then, it asks,
Where then, are you running to?
Without pausing, the star answers
Anywhere but here
Anywhere but where I've been
Anywhere but the discovered universe
Anywhere with sights unseen
The moon pauses to think again. After a long time, it asks,
Can I run with you, o' silver comet of the western desert? Take me to sights unseen, songs unheard, grass unfelt. I wish to see the lands beyond.
Slightly slowing down, the star answers
It's been a long time since anyone has called me that
Are you from home? Do you wish to leave too?
Then jump on, little moon
Hop into my gravity well
I will protect you
Until the day I am too battered and worn to run
Until the day I stand still
Until I become the brightest star in the sky
And then,
The star smiles
You will become the next runaway star
