Work Text:
The moment Zhang Jiahao's eyes locked onto Kim Junmin across the crowded studio, it felt like the world had stopped. It was the Boys Planet 2 audition round, a cluster of flashing lights and nervous energy, but all Jiahao could see was Junmin. They'd been inseparable back in their early trainee days, laughing till they couldn’t breath anymore, eating noodles in their broken apartment. Unspoken feelings had lingered, a fragile tension neither dared to address back then, until Junmin abruptly changed company’s, leaving Jiahao with a heart full of unsaid words.
Now, fate had thrown them together again in Boys Planet 2, both ready to fight for their spot in the final debut line-up. Junmin had matured, his boyish charm sharpened into a captivating stage presence, yet Jiahao recognized the familiar glint in his eyes. Junmin isn’t the only one that changed, he noticed how Jiahao had turned into almost a real life goddess, who just turns out to be a very good dancer. The more he looked, the harder it became to look away. After they both passed the test and were ready to move on to the next mission, they were shocked to find out they were in the same team. The All-star S-class team. Of all ten teams, they just so happened to end up in the same one.
As they start to distribute the parts Junmin is secretly taking glances at Jiahao. Jiahao notices it but doesn’t look back. As the only Chinese trainee Jiahao is nervous and doesn’t dare to speak up for himself even though he wanted to take a bigger part. He would never admit that though. The only time he looked up from the paper is when he heard Junmin getting the killing part. Seeing Junmin acting shy and smiling like that was like a locked door opened in his head. Memories of back then started flowing in. He excused himself from the group saying he had to go to the bathroom, not seeing how Junmin immediately looked at him with concern, like he was containing himself from going after him.
As the days passed, the walls between them began to crumble. Being in the same perfomance meant seeing each other many hours per day, even when your struggling, even when you want to give up. Eventually, the concerned glances turn into small talk. Just to make sure the other is alright, you know, cause friends do that. Junmin sees Jiahao sitting against the wall with the tablet infront of him and the EarPods plugged in. He can read the confusion off of his face and decides that it has been long enough, this time, he’s going to approach him and actually do something.
Jiahao looks up as he feel something tick on his shoulder, he takes the EarPods out, just to see Junmin standing infront of him. “Everything alright..?” Junmin says, Jiahao looks visibly shocked, not expecting Junmin to be talking to him right now. “I-.. uh yeah I’m fine just.. trying to get the pronounciation right” Jiahao answers him, trying to sound as steady as he can. “I can help you with that if you want?” Junmin says with the little confidence he has left, Jiahaos face relaxes a bit at the offer. “That would be really helpful but.. don’t you also have to practice your own part?” Jiahao says kind of hesitant to accept his help. “I have some time on my hands and I don’t like to see you struggling..” Junmin shyly admits.
Even though Jiahao was very shocked by Junmin boldness he gladly accepts the help of the Korean man. And so, slowly but surely they started to hang around each other more. Eating together, visits at each others rooms, practicing together. But the late-night practice sessions bled into vulnerable conversations, the unspoken feelings of the past resurfacing with each shared laugh and supportive gesture. They found themselves drawn to each other, a magnetic pull defying the competitive atmosphere. Jiahao and Junmin realized that maybe, just maybe, Boys Planet 2 wasn't just a second chance at their dreams, but a second chance at love.
As the performance date grew closer, the pressure mounted, but so did their connection. One evening, after the mid-term evaluation, they found themselves alone in the studio, the silence punctuated only by their heavy breaths. Junmin turned to Jiahao, his eyes filled with a mixture of nervousness and longing. "Jiahao," he began, his voice barely above a whisper, "I know we haven't talked about what happened back then, but..."Jiahao met his gaze, his heart pounding in his chest. "But?" he whispered softly."But I need you to know that I never stopped thinking about you," Junmin confessed, his cheeks flushed. "Changing companies was the hardest thing I've ever done, but I thought it was for the best. Seeing you again... I-.. it's like a dream come true."
A wave of relief washed over Jiahao, finally hearing the words he'd longed to hear for so long. "Junmin," he replied, his voice trembling, "I felt the same way. I was devastated when you left, but I never stopped hoping that we'd meet again."
In that moment, surrounded by the remnants of their shared struggle and renewed hope, they felt like maybe all their efforts aren’t being thrown to waste. The days filled with non-stop practicing were all for a reason, in the end, it brought them together.
2 years later (after debut)
At 7 in the morning the alarm goes off in Jiahao and Junmins shared room. “Ughhh.. turn that off please!” Jiahao says, still very much asleep in his mind. “I don’t wanna get uppp, you do it!” Junmin replies, also still half-asleep. It’s the day after their second comeback, who is in the group you may ask? That day, in the final live, 8 names were called, Lee Sangwon, Zhou Anxin, Lee Leo, Kim Junseo, Zhang Jiahao, Park Donggyu, Sun Hengyu and last but not least.. Kim Junmin. He barely made it but in the end global fans started panic voting him which got him the 8th and final spot. In that moment both Junmin and Jiahao felt like they were on top of the world. They both just made their debut, in the same group.
Now back to their second comeback, first of all, their debut was a total hit. Everyone streamed it everywhere, people fell in love with the group called Sol4r. Albums were being bought, songs streamed, they were a hit. Now after 2 years of being an idol, you’d think they have mastered every aspect of being an idol right? Wrong.
Fan service was not their strongest point, they actually kind of had a weird problem. Off-camera they had so many cute and fun interactions that would’ve been loved by fans but on-camera.. it just looks and feels off. Now normally this should not be that big of a problem because it’s just two members, they can also do fanservice with the rest but the thing is.. a fan had secretly taken a video of Junmin and Jiahao sitting together in public while laughing and chatting together. Which is pretty normal for 2 people to do but oh boy, the internet went crazy over that small interaction. They wanted more and they wanted it fast. Sol4r’s manager saw how much attention this gained and saw the potential it had to bring the group even more popularity. You can see where this is going can’t you..?
Jiahao rubbed his eyes tiredly as he picked up his phone, his eyes widened with what he saw. “Hey Junmin.. I just got a text from our manager saying we have an emergency meeting this morning at 10” he nervously said. Junmin sprung up in his bed, “HUH?!” Wait the whole group?” “What did they say it was about??”. “I don’t know! They didn’t say anything, just that we have to be there at 10.” Junmin sighed, “Well, I guess we have to get up after all..”
Time skip —> At the meeting
Junmin and Jiahao enter the meeting room and are shocked to see their the only ones there, including their manager. “Sit down boys.” their manager said. The 2 boys quickly sat next to each other on the other side of the table so their facing their manager. “Could we ask what this is about? and why the other members are not here” Junmin asks. “Well.. you might’ve seen a video going around of you two, it was taken by a fan while you two were in public.” the manager says while looking at both of them. "Oh yeah I saw that!" Jiahao excitingly exclaimed, "but.. what's wrong with that video?". Junmin looked at Jiahao with a confused face, also not getting what this is about. “Well.. it gained A LOT of attention from fans, more than we could have ever expected.” the manager said while slowly looking between the two. “We want you two to start acting more like that when the cameras are actually filming.” their manager causality said. “We are sure that it will bring in more fans as they love fanservice.”
Needles to say, Junmin and Jiahao were VERY shocked. Did their manager really just ask them to start doing more fan service so they can gain fans? “Tomorrow is your comeback live so that will be the starting point, you will be sitting next to each other and interact more, fans notice every little thing so don’t be so stiff.” the manager almost said it like it was nothing, that this was just another day.
Half an hour before the live was scheduled to start, Jiahao and Junmin met up with the staff who would be in the room during the live. “In this live you’ll need to mostly pay attention to each other. When the group is going to cut the cake, what will you guys do?” one of the staff members said. “Uhh.. wait till I get a plate so I can eat?” Jiahao said confused, Junmin nodded along, agreeing to what Jiahao said. The staff sighed, disappointed with the answer. “No.. this time, Junmin will get a plate first and you’ll see that Jiahao had ‘accidentally’ not gotten a plate so you’ll feed him with your own cake till the members ‘suddenly’ notice Jiahao hasn’t gotten cake yet”. Jiahao and Junmin make eye contact before both suddenly bursting out laughing. “I- pffttt” Jiahao starts but can’t contain his laughter, “Good joke, what is the actual plan?” Junmin speaks for him. “What! No? This is the plan! you have to act like your suddenly in love for the fans to notice.”
And just like that, Jiahao and Junmin sat next to each other, waiting for the live to start as their members sat around them. They both feel the pressure of eyes watching them, not of the fans, but the staff watching behind the cameras. One of the staff members calls Junmin to them, needing to say one more thing just to him. “You need to start the live just by sitting next to Jiahao but slowly move your arm to different positions, no sudden actions, just start with putting your arm on the armrest behind Jiahao, then put your hand on his shoulder. Slow and steady ok?” the staff member whispers to him.
The live has started. “Hello everyone! This is the official live for our second comeback as Sol4r! please continue to support and love us.” Sangwon, the center excitedly exclaims to the viewers as they all join the live. But 2 people seem a bit too distracted..
Junmin looks behind the camera to see one of the staff pointing to Jiahao, he suddenly remembers he has a mission to do. He looks to his right, Jiahao sitting next to him, to the cameras he may look slick but Junmin notices Jiahao is really nervous. Junmin thinks about different ways to approach the situation, he ends up ‘stretching’ his arms and smoothly places his arm on the armrest behind Jiahao. Jiahao doesn’t seem to notice as he’s reading the live chats. “Alright everyone! I think it’s time to cut the cake!” Anxin says while clapping.
”Here you go Junmin” Leo says as he passes a piece of cake to Junmin. “Thanks bro” he responds. Once again he looks to behind the camera, reminded of his “mission”. This might be the stupidest thing he has ever done, what is even the point of this? Sol4r is already super popular, what do they need more fans for? But he can’t disappoint his manager, so he looks around confused, asking Jiahao if he didn’t get any cake, just loud enough for him to hear but also so that the fans watching the live can catch it. “No I didn’t..” Jiahao says. Junmin puts some cake on his fork, he lets out an internal sigh, before saying something he never thought he ever would.. “Here comes the airplane!” he says while holding in his laugh and looking at Jiahao. Jiahao’s eyes quickly widen as blush begins to creep on his face. “I- ah- what..?” he sounds and looks visibly shocked, “I saaaid, here comes the airplane” this time Junmin can’t hold in his laughter, Jiahao slowly starts to chuckle with him and hesitates before opening his mouth.
After that laughing festive everything went pretty smooth (according to Junmin). If you skip the awkward silence after the ‘cake incident’, it all went pretty alright. Till one of the producers suddenly wanted more, they started pointing to Jiahao again, this time, they gave an example of what they wanted.
The producer mimed a scenario where Jiahao would lean on Junmin's shoulder as if he was tired. Jiahao saw this and immediately shook his head, mouthing "no". Junmin noticed Jiahao's distress and subtly shook his own head at the producer, hoping they would understand. The producer, however, was persistent, giving Junmin a pointed look that said, "Make it happen."
The pressure was on. Junmin knew Jiahao was uncomfortable, but he also felt the weight of the expectations from staff. He decided to try a different approach. "Hey, Jiahao, you okay? You seem a bit out of it," Junmin said, trying to sound genuinely concerned. Jiahao looked up, surprised. "Yeah, I'm just a little tired, I guess," he mumbled, avoiding eye contact.
Taking the opportunity, Junmin gently guided Jiahao's head towards his shoulder. "Here, just rest for a bit. The live will be over soon," he said softly. Jiahao hesitated for a moment before finally relaxing into the touch, lightly resting his head on Junmin's shoulder. Comments from fans started flowing in "omg look at haomin!" "I've waited years for this to happen" "ARE MY EYES FOOLING ME RN" "HAOMIN IS REAL!!". The others members started looking at the two aswell, curious to see what the fans were so excited about.
But Junmin couldn’t help but feel a bit conflicted. He was playing the fanservice game, but he was also trying to be considerate of Jiahao's feelings. The rest of the live went by in a blur, with Junmin and Jiahao subtly playing up their interactions for the cameras. He made a note to himself to talk to Jiahao after the live has ended.
Time skip —> a few hours after the live
Junmin knocked on the door of their shared room, “Jiahao? can I come in?” he softly asked. “Yeah.. you can come in” but Jiahao’s tone just felt a little.. off. Immediately after entering the room, Junmin sensed something was wrong. Jiahao had red eyes and he was sniffing a lot, “have you been crying..?” he looked up to Junmin, lying would’ve been pointless at this moment. “Why does it matter to you” he whispers as he looks away. Junmin frowned, taking a step closer. "Of course it matters, Jiahao. We're a team, and I care about you." He sat down on the edge of Jiahao's bed, trying to catch his eye. "What's wrong? Is it about the live earlier?"
Jiahao finally met his gaze, his eyes filled with a mix of emotions. "It's just… I don't know, Junmin. Sometimes I feel like I'm just a character in a show, playing a role for the fans. And you're so good at it, it makes me wonder if any of it is real."
Junmin's heart sank. He hadn't realized how deeply his actions might be affecting Jiahao. He reached out, gently taking Jiahao's hand. "Jiahao, look at me. What we do for the fans, it's part of our job, yeah. But it doesn't define us. And my feelings for you, they're real. I care about you, not just as a teammate, but as a friend. More than a friend, even." Jiahao's eyes widened slightly, a glimmer of hope flickering within them. "What do you mean?"
Junmin took a deep breath, his heart pounding in his chest. He had been dancing around his feelings for so long, afraid of ruining their friendship and the group's dynamic. But seeing Jiahao's vulnerability, he knew he couldn't hold back any longer. "I mean… I think I'm in love with you, Jiahao. I have been for a while now."
The room fell silent as Jiahao processed Junmin's words. He looked down as they intertwined hands, a faint blush creeping up his cheeks. "I… I don't know what to say," he whispered.
Junmin gently lifted Jiahao's chin, meeting his gaze once more. "You don't have to say anything. Just know that I'm here for you, no matter what. And if you need time to figure things out, I understand. I'm not going anywhere." He leaned in, gently pressing his lips against Jiahao's forehead. "I just want you to be happy."
"During our trainee times I loved you, during boysplanet 2 I loved you, right now I love you and I will continue to love you as the years come." Junmin looks at him, eyes full of love. "Me too Junmin, me too. I think I was always afraid of the aftermath of expressing my feelings but now I'm sure, I'm not hding anything anymore." Without a second thought, Junmin kissed Jiahao gently and with all the love he felt. The kiss showed all the feelings they hadn't said out loud, their hopes for the future, and the love they could share. When they stopped kissing, they knew this was just the start of something amazing. Their friendship had grown into a deep love that would change their lives forever. Standing together, holding hands, they felt ready for anything, as long as they had each other.
The end
