The proposal

Work Text:

Stacking a match against the side of a box. Raoul lit a match cupping it loosely with his hand around the flame . He lit the candle that he had placed on the small dinner table in the center of the room earlier that morning. Raoul bowed out the match and binned it after leaving it in the sink for a while. He stood stricken over the details in his mind

Standing at the threshold to Raoul’s home stood Lucille in a dazzling pale blue dress .

Raoul moved aside to let Lucille into the arrangement soon they make their way into the kitchen “what is all this?” Lucille ask’s as she took in the room. The aroma of roast chicken with seasoned potatoes filled the air as they entered the dining room. The table was set with a crisp white cloth, and the flickering candle cast a warm glow over the carefully arranged plates and silverware. A bottle of wine chilled in an ice bucket beside two wine glasses.

”I thought a romantic meal might be nice you know just the two of us.” Raoul replied “how sweet.” Lucille give Raoul a kiss on his cheek. “While maud taught me the recipe. I..I hope it’s good. I’ve never actually made it on my own before Raoul said sheepishly. Lucius picked up a fork from the table and took some food and offered a small piece for rauol and held it to his lips. “Well then it’s only right that you be the one to test it out.”

Raoul hesitated but took the bite. His eyes widened and he sat back. “Hey that’s actually good! Not… As good as yours tho Raoul said sheepishly.

Lucille’s eyes widened as she really took in the effort Raoul had put into the evening. “You really went all out,” she said, her voice filled with genuine appreciation. They ate their dinner and talked about random things that have happened to them in the past week.Lucile told Raoul how Albert tried to get his job back while driving her aunt insane. Raoul his eyes drifting to the record player in the corner of the room. He rose from his chair and selected a vinyl from a nearby shelf, and placed the needle onto the record player. The soft melody up beat filled the room wrapping around them like a warm embrace. They sat back down, and he took her hand in his, looking into her eyes.

"Lucille," he began, his voice quavering slightly. "You know how much you mean to me. Since the moment I first saw you, I knew that you were the one even if I didn’t really know it fully at the time ." He paused, feeling the weight of the words he was about to say. gathering together all of his courage and determination to ask the question." He took a deep breath, his heart racing.

Lucille eyes searched his, a questioning look flitting across her features. "Raoul," she said softly, her voice a whisper of anticipation. "What is it you want to ask?"

Raoul swallowed hard, the room seemingly closing in around him as he reached into his pocket. His hand felt cold and clammy, but the small velvet box inside it was warm. "Lucille," he continued, his voice steadier now, "will you do me the honor of becoming my wife?" He pulled out the box, opening it to reveal a ring that sparkled in the candlelight. It was a delicate band of gold, with a solitary diamond that seemed to dance with every heartbeat.

Lucille's hand flew to her mouth, and her eyes grew wide with surprise. The color drained from her face, and for a moment, Raoul feared he had made a mistake. But then, a smile began to form, and her eyes filled with tears of joy. "Oh, Raoul," she breathed, her voice trembling. "Yes, yes, I will marry you."The room seemed to spin around Raoul’s face broke into a wide smile as he slipped the ring onto her finger. It fit perfectly, just as he had hoped. He had spent countless hours at the jewelers, making sure it was just right. They spent the rest of the night in each other’s arms.
The end.
