Professor's Observance

Summary:

The Pevensies through the eyes of one of their professors.

Work Text:

Many suspected that there was something going on with Susan and Peter. Especially one Professor Margo Warde. They did not treat each other like they treated their other siblings, that is to say; like siblings. Susan being the only one who can calm him once his rage is released. Peter is protective over Lucy, but he will kill a man over Susan. He doesn’t treat her like a sister. Many other professors notice it. But Margo notices that he acts like more of a husband towards her than a brother. So much so that she begins to question if they are siblings at all. It all starts when Peter refuses to let the barber cut his hair. He goes to the store that weekend to buy a straight razor, but because he is too young, he needs to get an "adult". She allows him to buy it, but insists on being in the room. He whips off his shirt and sits in the bathroom as she cuts his hair and shaves his face. She is surprised when Susan sits in his lap. There is a point where she feels as if she’s intruding. Many times before has she cut her own husband's hair and shaved his face. But it’s never had an intimate air about it. Not like them. She slips out of the room unnoticed as Susan cleans the razor and starts on Peter’s neck.

The razor is kept in her office, only to be returned to Peter and Susan once a month.

There is one time where she is sure she overhears Peter call Susan “Wife”. She brushes it off as a mistake. She just heard a part of a conversation without context. Even as she thinks it, she doesn’t believe it. It isn’t until that weekend, when she sits on a bench by a tree in the courtyard that Peter and Susan are sitting under, watching their siblings spar, that she hears it. This time it’s unmistakable.

“Peter, darling…”

“Yes, my dear?”

“Do you think Lucy and Ed would fancy going to the shops tomorrow?”

“Is there something you need?”

“Books… and a dress for the ball.”

“You have dresses.” Peter says.

“I need a new one… you’ve seen those dresses.” Susan smiles.

“Then you shall have it.” Peter takes her hand and kisses it.

“You’ll need a shirt to match.”

“Naturally.” He smiles at her.

It’s not natural, but who is she to judge. These children are far older than their bodies. Anyone who has met them can see it.

During the weekend she has tea with a friend. She says something she has only heard once before.

“By the Lion!” is muttered under her breath when she drops sugar on the floor.

Her curiosity gets the better of her and she asks, “What is an Aslan?”

“I’m sorry?”

“You said “By the Lion.” I’ve heard it before. Along with “Aslan’s mane.” But I can’t decipher what it means. Please Polly, tell me.”

“Aslan is The Great Lion. The King of all kings. He is good, but he is not a tame lion. Where have you heard this before?”

“One of my students. She and her siblings are of the strange sort. But not a bad strange, just… different. They seem older, but they are only children. All four of them.”

“The Pevensies.”

“You know them?”

“Of course.”

“How?”

“If I told you, you wouldn’t believe me.”

“At this point I think I’d believe anything.”

“During the war, they were sent away like most children. They found a wardrobe and went into it, and came into the land of Narnia. They spent fifteen years as Kings and Queens of Narnia, but when they came out of the wardrobe, they were in children’s bodies again. But their minds didn’t change. They retain their memories. They are Kings and Queens, all four of them. Peter is High King.”

“And Aslan?”

“The King of all Kings. The Father of Narnia. In Narnia he presents himself primarily as a Lion. But in this world, he is known as Jesus Christ. I’m not sure if the Pevensies know that yet, but they will, in time.”

“Peter and Susan, are they…”

“Married? Yes. They were wed by Aslan himself when they came of age.

Somehow, she wasn't surprised. It all explained so much.

During the ball, she watched as the Pevensies took the floor and danced the Waltz. She was not, however, expecting Peter to hold his hand out to her. She felt honored, knowing what she knew, and took his hand. When their dance ended, she spoke, "You must return to your Queen. Thank you sir, for the dance." The look on Peter's face was priceless. He only nodded and returned to Susan.

She noticed them watching her more as the days passed. Peter came to her directly to ask for Susan to be escorted to him. She put it together quickly that he preferred to be clean shaven, and that only Susan was allowed near his face with a blade. They also seemed to have a routine. They would go to the shops on Saturday, and Susan would shave him on Sunday. Against her better judgement, she left them alone.

After a week, she was approached by Susan as she returned the razor. "May I ask you a question?"

"You may," She answered.

"You referred to Peter by his title. How did you know?"

"I happen to be good friends with someone who knows your Aslan." Margo answered. That was all it seemed that Susan needed, as she left with a succinct nod.
