Work Text:
The familiar figure came into view. The tall man, hair a bit longer than Sarah remembered, and with a slight limp that he’d never had previously.
And finally she was able to let out the breath she’d been holding for six months. He was alive. He was here.
Rex’s ears perked up at the sight of Charlie, and he bounded towards him, tail wagging excitedly. The man kneeled down, wrapped his arms around the dog in a fierce hug. He stood back up, taking in the sight of the woman running towards him.
Sarah launched herself into Charlie’s waiting arms, clung tightly to him, her tears soaking his t-shirt. He held her close, his own tears falling as he inhaled deeply, the soft scent of her shampoo reminding him that he was home. Safe.
Sarah spoke first, muffled through her tears. “I missed you. I missed you so much. I thought I’d never see you again.”
“I would never leave you.” Rex circled the pair, and Charlie reached a hand down to ruffle his fur. “Either of you.”
Sarah finally raised her head, looked him over. “You’re okay?”
“The doctors checked me out. I’ll have some physical therapy to do, but overall, I’m okay.” Charlie gave her a reassuring squeeze. “I’m just ready to go home. Together.”
Sarah nodded. “Together.”
