There was a single candle on the round table still lit.
“The candle ought to be extinguished,” James murmured, his head resting in the crook of Jack’s shoulder. They both laid on the bed in the captain's quarters, and neither of them had any urge to stand up and cross the cabin to see it done.
“Nonsense” Jack's voice was already sleepy. “It adds… ambiance. A romantic glow for a romantic evening.”
James shifted slightly, turning his head to look at the man. “It’s a fire hazard. And you, my dear, soaked as you are in rum, are likely the most flammable object on this ship.”
Jack chuckled. “A wager, then,” he proposed, “A contest of wills. First man to blink gets up and snuffs the flame.”
James rolled his eyes but couldn't help the half smile that tugged at his lips. “Are you challenging me?”

James met his gaze across the pillow. The small flame danced in Jack’s eyes. The seconds stretched, the silence of their ridiculous duel filled only by the gentle rocking of the Pearl. Jack's lips quirked in a smirk, and then he leaned in.
His lips met his. It was soft, slow, a lazy kiss that tasted faintly of rum, and James felt his own eyes flutter shut without a fight. Jack pulled back a moment later, grinning in the dim light.
“You blinked,” he whispered, triumphant.
James frowned. “You cheated.”
Jack's fingers traced the line of his jaw. "Pirate"
An exasperated laugh escaped James’s lips. He rolled on the bed, pulling the covers off him to stand up and go put out the candle.
