Work Text:
Another day in the soft, white winter void of the Canadian forests. Everyday was filled with cold, hard labor, but it was all worth it. After all, the business is what keeps a roof over his head. Not to mention, it's how he's able to buy such nice things for his Sunshine, Olivia.
At least, that's how it used to be. Before that buffoon, Jean started stumbling around. Everyone knew him as the local drunk. Even after his property burnt down, he couldn't shake his reputation.
The Merchant would be a liar if he said he never had a couple of drinks at the Applejack Acme. It was a decent place close enough for his liking. Besides, was it such a crime to indulge in a good temptation every once in a while?
Another good day was spoiled when Jean showed up. Today, he came stumbling and waddling up to his stand, pants stuffed with fish. Why didn't he make something to carry the fish was beyond him.
As Jean continued to make a fool out of himself, The Master of Fur Tapping approached his stand with yet another bountiful supply of beavers. As The Master dumped his load off on the skinning table he saw an opportunity of gold fall into his lap.
The Merchant tugged on the sleeve of The Master. This was his chance. Although no clear signs of courtship were ever indicated, he was willing to risk such a vital client in the name of love.
Or so he thought...
He clasp the tiny box in the palm of his hand. He held it up for The Master to see. Opening the box, he revealed a gleaming, untouched diamond ring.
He is by no means a man knowelgable of gems and jewelry. Luckily, his cousin married a well-off jeweler in a more populated area. While still far out of his budget, he managed to get a good deal on a gorgeous, authentic diamond.
He stared into The Master's eyes, smiling as though The Master is holding the moon and the stars. But before he could even begin to say, "Will you marry me", he caught a glimpse of The Master's expression.
He held a look of unsurity and judgment. A look that could not only destroy their relationship, but destroy his business...
He would make it up to Olivia later. For now, he had to recontexeualize the proposal.
He looked at the ring and back to The Master, feigning the realization of miscommunication. He stepped aside to give The Master a clear view of his daughter. He knew Oliva was threatening violence right behind him. They had spoken about her future before. Oliva didn't want to get married unless she was completely positive he's the one. The Merchan didn't want her getting married at all.
