“Im sorry Mikey, i can't drive you today. You’ll have to ask your sister.” His mother tells him. He huffs in annoyance and stomps upstairs.
He doesn't bother to knock and barges right into Nancy's room. He speaks before he can register what's in front of him.
“Nancy! You have to drive me to meet with Lucas and Max, moms busy.”
There's a groan and a rustle of sheets as someone who isn't Nancy turns to face the door and sits up on their elbows, still with Nancy's arm draped over their chest.
“Robin?”
Hearing her name, she suddenly comes to from her sleepy daze and startles at the sight of Mike in the doorway.
Robin's brain misfires and she just hides under the covers as if she would teleport away from the situation. She couldn't believe her girlfriend's little brother had just caught them in bed together, she can already hear the teasing from Steve.
At the disturbance, Nancy herself turns to face the door and freezes when she makes eye contact with Mike. Her flustered expression quickly changes to an annoyed one.
“Haven't you ever heard of knocking? What do you want?” Her brows furrowed together as she waves a hand around, not fully understanding the gravity of the situation yet as she's still waking up.
Mike is still caught in disbelief, his ears buzzing with white noise as he looks around Nancy's bedroom.
Robin's hand reaches out from underneath the duvet to grab onto a nearby shirt that was lying there.
Nancy watches the single arm patting around her floor till it feels something fabric and slinks back under the covers.
Her head turns back to Mike and she repeats herself, growing more frustrated with her brother standing there and gapping like a fish.
“What do you want Mike.”
“Did you sneak Robin in?” He finally says, to Nancy and Robins discomfort, the lump on the bed freezes and deflates. It hits Nancy that she's just been caught.
Nancy's lip twitches unconsciously as she feels her patience dwindle as it normally does when her brother is bothering her but she takes a second to calm herself before speaking.
“Would you answer me Mike, what do you want that you have to walk here in unannounced?” Her tone grows more clipped as she goes on.
“Does mom know?” He asks, completely ignoring Nancy.
She throws her hands up and lets out an irate sigh.
“Am i talking to myself? The neighbour?”
Robin, seemingly having managed to put a shirt on, peaks her head out from the duvet and Mike's eyes lock onto her.
Seeing the two of them in bed together and the clothes strung about seem to click in his mind as his eyebrows almost fly off his forehead.
He steps further into the room and whisper yells,
“Nancy did you do Robin with everyone in the house?!”
Nancys face flushes with anger and embarrassment. As she seeths, Robin breathes a defeated “oh god” and flops back onto her pillow.
“Thats probably what she was doing last night!” Mike comments unhelpfully. Robin turns away, pulling the pillow into her face and groaning.
“That too!”
“Nance, make it stop.”
“Mike.” She begins, voice low.
“Yeah?”
“Get out!”
He jumps and scrambles away, his brain supplying him with the knowledge that Nancy has at least two guns in her room but fails to tell him that she wouldn't shoot her own brother. Probably. Most likely.
He slams the door behind him and starts to go ask his mom for a ride but remembers that the whole reason he was in Nancys room, was so that she could give him a ride.
Hes still going to meet with Lucas and Max so he just has to wait by Nancy's door.
Eventually Robin and Nancy emerge from her room, clothes rumpled and hair messy.
Nancy closes the door behind her and looks at Robin. She starts carding her fingers through Robins hair to try and make it more pressentable.
“What are you doing Nance?”
“You still look like you've had sex, I can't have you looking like it in front of my mom.”
“Nancy!” Mike and Robin say in unison.
“Oh what as if you don't know,” she looks at Mike. Turning to Robin she exclaims, “And you were there!”
“Whatever, lets go.” Mike interrupts, already walking to the stairs.
As he walks away, Nancy grabs Robin by her face, shmushing her cheeks in her palms and tilts her head down so that they are face to face.
“When you go down there, you don't greet my parents, walk straight out and wait for us by the door. If you encounter Holly, say hello, do not ignore her.” Nancy says, tone grave. Robin salutes and Nancy releases her.
“Yes, drill sergeant.”
Nancy smiles fondly at her joking, she stands on her toes to give Robin a kiss on the cheek and lightly pushes her toward the stairs.
“Okay, okay, go.”
Robin salutes one last time and speed walks downstairs with Nancy trailing behind her.
Robin rushes out the frontdoor, almost slamming it behind her. “No slamming doors.” Ted drawls from his La-Z-Boy, not looking up from the newspaper.
Karen looks suspiciously at the figure and her children.
“Mike, who was that honey?”
He glances over his shoulder and shrugs.
“I don't know, I didn't see anyone.”
“Nancy?” She turns to her eldest.
“I didn't see anyone either.” She says too quickly. Karen squints at her and looks her up and down, observing her wild curly hair.
Karen stalks around the island and gets into Nancy's personal space, causing her to lean away from her.
They stay like that for a long moment, Mike watching the uncomfortable exchange with trepidation, aware of the time and how he's running late.
Karen finally breaks the silence with a playful yet dire, “You should shower.” Making a chill run down Nancy's spine, already anticipating the questioning she’ll receive later.
“Ok mom we need to go, bye!” Mike swoops in, grabbing Nancy's arm and pulling her away. She silently thanks Mike for the saving grace though she wouldn't out loud, god knows that ego of his doesn't need anymore feeding.
They leave the house together and find Robin sitting on the front steps, shivering. She stands to address them, jaw chattering.
“Fucking finally, im freezing my tits off out here.”
“The sun is shining.” Mike says, confused.
“And? Let's just get in the car already.”
Robin rushes to the passenger side and waits impatiently for Nancy to open the door.
Nancy unlocks the car remotely and Robin immediately jumps in.
The siblings both get in the car. As soon as Nancy turns the engine on Robin flicks on the heating, with warm air blasting at her face she sighs in relief.
“Seatbelt, Mike.” Nancy says as she turns around while backing out the driveway and getting on the road. He rolls his eyes theatrically but does so anyway. Robin, hearing this, also moves to put her seatbelt on.
“Where to?”
“Maxs house.”
“Alright.”
During the drive, Mike and Robin converse about various different movies they've seen. Nancy hears a ringing in her ears as she subconsciously tunes out their talks of star wars, focusing solely on the road. The buzzing in her ear stops when she hears mention of her own name.
“Why did you assume Nancy was the one doing me and not the other way around?” She hears Robin's voice ask Mike. She whips her head to her girlfriend, startling Robin at the sudden movement. There's no reason for her to be discussing this with her brother of all people.
“Jeez, I didn't know you were listening.” She whispers with a hand over her chest.
From the backseat, Mike answers.
“I know what she was like with Johnathan. She would say ‘I got this.’ And he would listen.”
“Seriously?” Robin asks, curious. Nancy can only be glad she wasn't jealous or upset Mike was bringing up her ex.
“Yeah, that guy was like her princess or something. Plus you've seen her with a gun.” ‘Yes, I, have.’ Robin thinks. “No fear behind those eyes.”
Nancy looks at Mike in the rearview mirror. He smirks mischievously at her as he continues speaking, jumping at the chance to mess with his sister.
“Plus plus, I can tell by the hickeys.”
Robin, having not seen herself in a mirror since yesterday afternoon, whips her head around to Nancy, suddenly feeling very exposed.
“Well I can be, ya’ know, assertive and stuff.” Robin says, putting a hand on Nancy's thigh to punctuate her sentence.
It would've been effective if Nancy didn't immediately and instinctively swat it off.
“Get off, I'm driving.”
Robin pulls her hand back like she’d been burned.
“Sorry.” She says with a sheepish smile.
“I've watched this exact thing happen with her and Johnathan.” Mike deadpans.
“Wow she was really wearing the pants in that relationship.” Robin comments.
“Looks like she is in this one as well.” Mike replies.
“How come I'm only now finding out about it, Nance?” He asks his sister.
“I'm hiding it from mom and dad, you don't know how they’ll react to me with a girl. Especially dad.”
“But you were hiding it from me too.” He says, hurt. “I wouldn't have seen you differently. Honest.” He peers at her in the rearview mirror, waiting for her to look at him. When she does, she looks sorrowfully back at him.
“I'm sorry Mike, I didn't mean to hide us from you.” She focuses back on the road. She can feel Robin's gaze on her.
There's a moment of silence before Mike adds, “You're not hiding it very well, if I had caught you this morning. And having sex under their roof, what if they heard you two?” He says, starting jokingly but growing protective as he went on.
Robin snaps to attention at that.
“Oh god what if they did. Nance, I can't face them if they actually heard us.”
“You mean if they heard you.” She addends. Her need to be right overpowers her logic. It was Nancy's turn to smirk as a harmony of her name was yelled by Mike and Robin. Both disgusted and aghast respectively.
Nancy looks at Robin, a grin still spread across her face.
“Don't even say it.” Robin huffs and rolls her eyes. “And don't look at me like that!”
Nancy snickers and turns back to the road.
“Could you guys not. I don't want to think about my sister having sex.”
“Sorry Mikey.” Robin says, then whispers “virgin.” Under her breath but purposefully loud enough so that the other two would hear.
Robin and Nancy giggle together and all Mike can do is cross his arms and sink into the middle seat because he knows he cant say anything to that.
Nancy turns onto the trailer park where Max lives and parks up on the dirt road outside.
“We’re here.” Nancy announces. “What are you guys doing anyway?” She asks
“We’re going to town.” Mike answers
“Well why didn't you say that, i would have dropped you off there.” She says, exasperated at the waste of time.
“You are.” Mike says cryptically. He gets out the car with a ‘Stay there!’ Called over his shoulder as he runs up to Maxs front door, knocking on it repeatedly.
Max and Lucas answer the door, they exchange words with Mike that Robin and Nancy cant hear.
“What if we just drive away?” Robin asks cheekily. Nancy sighs whistfully.
“I wish, but he would snitch on me.”
Nancy rolls the window down and lets her arm rest on it. She revs the engine, grabing the three teenagers attention.
“Lets go!” She drags the ‘oh’ in ‘go’ out.
Robin climbs on Nancy to stick her head out the window and greet the three as well.
“Hey lovers!” she calls out to Max and Lucas.
Mike says something to the two of them Nancy and Robin can't catch, but they can see it makes them laugh.
Make their way down to the car and Max and Lucas join Mike in the backseat.
“Hey Robin.” The two new ones greet.
“Seabelts.” Robin says, mimicing Nancy.
When only Lucas and Mike move, Robin turns around.
“You too Maxine, you're not exempt just because you're way cooler then these dorks.” Robins scolds. Max makes a face at being called by her full name but smiles and puts her seatbelt on anyway.
“What the hell? Are we not cool?” Lucas asks incredulously, Mike joining in.
“Yeah! Nancy, defend your brother.”
Nancy backs out of the trailer park and gets back on the asphalt road.
“No im with Robin on this, you two are dorks.”
Mike scoffs. “You're only agreeing with her because you got laid.”
Nancy shrugs, unbothered by her brother's attempt to provoke her.
“You two would still be dorks if I didn't get laid.”
“How does this keep coming up?” Robin asks Nancy, who clicks her tongue.
“You brought it up!”
“Oh yeah, forgot about that.” Robin says with a chuckle and a shake of the head, as if amused by her own actions.
“Brought what up?” Max pipes up, immediatly intrigued.
As Nancy is about to say ‘nothing’, Robin actually answers her. She couldn't believe her ears as Robin details the conversation had in the car before Lucas and Max got in. Nancy knows this is just a habit of Robins, to talk and keep talking until told otherwise, and usually Nancy finds it endearing. This is not endearing, this was telling 15 year olds about her night with Nancy.
As she spirals, she considers driving into a pole or a tree, taking everyone with her to avoid the embarrassment.
Her eyes dart to the rearview and as she expected, Lucas and Max are listening intently, ears perked up the moment they hear the word ‘sex’, and Mike is grimacing in the middle, having to listen to this all over again.
He makes eyecontact with Nancy and mouths “make it stop”.
Before Robin can say something truely graphic, in a split second decision Nancy swerves the car, knocking everyone against eachother. Surprised shouts from everyone in the car ring out.
It gets the intended effect though as Robin is groaning from knocking her head against the window. Nancy will have to apologise to her later and kiss her bump better.
“What the fuck Nance! When I said "make it stop" I didn't mean to actually kill us!” Mike yells at her. It falls on deaf ears however, as Nancy stares forward, eyes glazed over.
“I saw a… rabbit.” Was all she said as then silence fell over the drive. She glances at Robin when she says ‘rabbit’, for a reason unknown to Mike, Max and Lucas.
“Is she calling me the rabbit?” Robin asks herself, disbelieving. Nancy swats her arm and mutters a strained ‘shut up’ through her teeth. Robin, finally, takes the hint and turns to the teens behind her. She searches for something to change the subject.
“So… have you guys seen Labyrinth? David Bowies in it.” She says with a twitch in her lip. Mike, Lucas and Max all share a look between each other before Mike responds.
“Yeah, it's pretty good”
Nancy breathes a sigh of relief as the conversation topic changes to Labyrinth, never turning to her or Robin until the very end when the three are getting out of her car.
“Dont have too much fun without us.” Max says as she walks away with Lucas
“Hey hey hey wait, Mike.” Robin calls out, making him stop begrudgingly and drag his feet back to the car. He leans over the driver's side window and waits for Robin to say her piece, Nancy looking over as well.
Robin takes a moment to marvel at how they are both giving her the exact same look and how similar they look.
“You didn't actually hear us, right?” She asks. Nancy stifles the urge to hit the gas and speed away so instead pinches the bridge of her nose in a display of disbelief. Robin was just showing off at this point, again, to her brother of all people.
Mike thinks back to the heavy breathing and bed springs squeaking he chalked up to Nancy having trouble sleeping when it woke him up in a sleepy daze in a whole new, and in his opinion - gross, light.
He makes a face, to which Robin immediately dispairs.
“No…” She whispers.
“You tried?” He shrugs and stands up straight, making a quick escape.
“I told you to be quiet!”
“How could i when you-”
Mike shouts over his shoulder,
“No no no, do that when I'm out of earshot.”
There's a long pause as Nancy and Robin watch Mike catch up to the other two.
“Show off.”
“How could I not?”
