Chapter Text
People surround hiccup cheering as he gets lifted off his feet, the Viking helmet big on his head; hitting him as he bounced up and down with the cheering crowd.
“Heh. Oh, yeah! Yes! I can't wait. I am so...”
“LEAVING! We're leaving. Let's pack up. Looks like you and me are taking a little vacation, forever. Ah, man... Aggh! What the-- What are you doing here?”
He turned finding Astrid standing there, a livid expression ok her face. She walked forward, tapping his chest as she spoke her axe held tightly in her other hand; making her nuckles white
“I want to know what's going on. No one just gets as good as you do. Especially you. Start talking! Are you training with someone?”
“Uh…training?”
“I know this looks really bad, but you see...this is, uh... You're right! You're right! You're right. I'm through with the lies. I've been making... outfits. So, you got me. It's time everyone knew. Drag me back. Go ahead. Here we go.”
Astrid bends his arm backward, making an audible cracking noise, forcing him to the ground
“OW! Why would you DO that!?”
“That's for the lies.”
Astrid drops her axe handle on his gut
“And THAT'S for everything else.”
“Oh, man.”
A shift in the air as a swoop is heard and toothless, black scales shine as he stalks forward. Jaw clutches as a faint growling sound can be heard
“Get down! RUN! RUN!”
Astrid screamed already running to grab hiccup
Hiccup instead sprinted in between Toothless and Astrid, hands moving to separate the two.
“NO! No. It's okay! It's okay... she's a friend. It's okay. You just scared him.
“I scared him?! I scared him!? Who is "him"”
Astrid yelled axe now in front of her, protective.
“Astrid, Toothless. Toothless, Astrid.” As soon as he's done, glancing at Toothless then back to Astrid- and she's running away.
“Da, da-da! We're dead!” Toothless suddenly swoops over him grabs him, and swings him ontop to ride as they chase down Astrid.
Once she's in the line of sight, Hiccup leans forward guiding Toothless down as she is plucked from the ground and flown into the sky
“Hiccup! Get me down from here!” Astrid scratched swinging her hand that once held her axe which is now discarded on the ground.
“You have to give me a chance to explain.”
“I am not listening to ANYTHING you have to say!”
“Then I won't speak. Just let me show you. Please, Astrid.”
He held his hand out and guided her to sit behind him. She looks down at the fast-moving ground.
“Now get me down,” she stated calmer
“Ok, toothless, down. Gently.”
The dragon suddenly takes off springing up, Astrid screams clinging to Hiccup and he protests the dragon's rash decision. He finally calmed gliding just above the clouds, the sun painting the sky all sorts of colors. Astrid finally looks around taking in the sight no longer wanting to go down.
She reaches up to the clouds turning them to water on her palm, she smiles showing no teeth as Toothless glides back down the small pit Astrid found them in.
Hiccup helped her off the giant lizard as the black dragon walked off to lie on his rock.
“I won’t tell.” She blurts fixing her hair
“Thank you.” Hiccup responds.
Astrid looks through the stuff he packed and sighs adding a few rashions she keeps on herself. Muttering ‘you're already too thin’
“You will come back. We will meet somewhere but you will come back. I’ll get you supplies.”
Hiccup nods taking his bag back and slugging it over his shoulder. The sun is setting turning the sky dark. Perfect for toothless stealth.
Nodding hiccup climbs in the dragon and looks down at Astrid
“Free that dragon for me. Oh and take care of my father for me. You know how hell get when he finds out I left.”
Astrid confirmed she would. Hiccup looks at the water one last time before taking off toothless flying above the village. He spots his and his father’s hut. The training arena. The main hall. Taking it in one last time, then flying south. Away from berk.
Away from home.
————
Forever.
They have been flying for
Forever.
Hiccup knew there were not many surrounding islands near berk but this is ridiculous.
The vast ocean seems never-ending. Hiccup talks to Toothless really just talking to himself.
It’ll be ok.
They’ll find somewhere.
They’ll find a home.
They’ll be safe.
Toothless grumbles or purrs in response.
When the boy was almost fell off from asleep toothless changed course.
“Wow! Toothless where are we-“
He dives and flies for what feels like forever. Then an island. Small but there appears. Hiccup screams in celebration.
When they land the pair walk for a few moments before finding a suitable cave. Starting a fire with shaking hands toothless assists with a small plasma blast making the final spark needed.
Hiccup finally lays down his anxiety eating at him.
What if he dies out here
What if he fails and can’t contact Astrid
What if his father finds him?
What if they kill tooth-
A weight is pressed on him. Toothless's head is resting on his chest. Hiccup pats him
“He-yy bud. Thank you” closing his eyes hiccup finally gets some rest.
——
Hiccup wakes in the cave, fire now nothing but ash, toothless curled around Hiccup's body. The boy sat up looking around. Remembering the events of the past day and sighing. Finally standing hiccup used the wall to help balance as he walked out of the cave leaving toothless sleeping.
Now out of the cave, the sun shone onto him as he gathered all the food he could. Knowing what fruit was good and what could kill him. Finally grabbing his boot dagger and using spare fabric to tie it to a longer stick hiccup started to hunt for fish. It took a while but after some practice and moving pond to pond, he finally got three, which should be enough for a toothless breakfast.
He dragged them back to the cave, toothless, still passed out. He restarted the fire, it being easier to form the ash as he added some twigs.
He ate some of the fruit he gathered while looking into the red flame. Toothless soon woke and ate up two of the fish and half of the first. Hiccup cooked it up for himself after Toothless refused to eat the rest.
After he finally finished eating he took the bones and made a small cord. Using a string of fabric and winding the fish bone at the end. He added one of toothless old scales and carved a small hole into it and threaded it through. The fish bone on the end acts as a stopper.
He smiled.
Hiccup often made jewelry while working in the forge. It was nice and calming to do. He put the string in his front pant pocket planning to add to it as he goes.
He lies back letting himself rest.
He doesn’t know where to go
He didn’t know what he was doing
He retreats everything.
But in this moment he’s calm. Smiling as toothless stretches in the side of his vision and a small purple terrible terror eats some of the scraps of the fish.
