Work Text:

As far as Ryotaro understood, it had been such a colossal failure against Adachi and Ameno Sagiri. He’s not even sure what an Ameno or a Sagiri is, but he understands the severity; failure resulted in what he could only charitably call the apocalypse.

Nanako, thankfully, was holding up the best. Even after her stint, well, both of their time in the hospital. Especially since she’s now acting as Naoto's babysitter.

She hasn’t been responsive. Ryotaro almost couldn’t believe his eyes when he first saw the detective, her face bloodied and missing her left arm and eye. The cold, catatonic look in her eye was something he could never get out of his mind. Rise fared only a little better, her ankle twisted and her clothes covered in blood-- everyone else's blood, not hers.

Everyone else…

He refused to believe his nephew was dead.

Ryotaro sighed and puffed on his cigarette. In the past, he joked that he did it to take the edge off, but to his dismay, he actually does exactly that. He’s aware it's actively making the other people in the room uncomfortable right now.

“How are we on supplies?” Tatsumi asks with tact like a bull. Today has been quiet on their front, thankfully, but this means Yasogami felt more like a ghost town than an actual school. “I know that nurse chick Kindness-senpai worked with said we’re good on first aid, but…”

Kujikawa bites her nails, although she’s already chewed them to the hyponychium, so it’s more like she’s biting at the nail bed. Ryotaro can notice that the mention of Joy Kindness has left her incredibly tense. “I… I don’t know? I think… um, Ai said something about…” She trails off and doesn’t say anything else. The three of them, mainly Kujikawa and Tatsumi, would practically start panicking at the utterance of Joy Kindness. He can understand.

Naoto, vacantly with her lone eye, stares at the coloring page that Nanako is working on. Red, blue, and gold blended on the grey colored paper. Ryotaro can tell Nanako is making the page look less like some random bear walking on the stream and more like Teddie. Ryotaro cringes at the somber recollection he’s having, remembering how distraught Nanako was when the news was first broken to her.

“How far has the fog reached?” Dojima finally speaks, removing the cigarette from his lips. He was aware that the fog and shadows crept further through Inaba, enveloping more in a yellow abscess.

Kanji arms fold. “...Kou checked this morning. A friend of his said it’s already passed Okina.”

Has it gotten to Okina City? Already? God, by the end of this week, it should be in Tokyo. It doesn’t help that they’ve been mostly cut off from the world, and text messages barely get through. What the hell are they going to do when Japan gets submerged? What do they do when this spreads worldwide? He never imagined he'd live in the apocalypse.

Ryotaro couldn’t imagine that this was what Adachi wanted. Granted, he never really knew what Adachi was thinking or feeling; if he did, he…

He closed his eyes as he pinched the bridge of his nose. He usually avoids swearing, but he can’t help it. Ryotaro spoke in a low voice: “Jesus Christ.”

Nanako looks up, which Naoto barely registers, her eyes wide with confusion. “...Dad?”

“It’s ok, honey,” He tells her with a kind voice, patting her back. “How about you go back to your drawing for Shirogane?” Ryotaro hoped to get any sort of reaction from the younger detective, but she just blankly stared at the drawing. It’s a far cry from what she used to be.

“Ok!” She then goes back to drawing and explaining the details of her drawing to Naoto (but Naoto’s lone, icy-gray eye is still focused on nothing).

Note: Yu is called "Joy Kindness" because that's what my friend Lili named him lol
