Chapter 1: The Call

Chapter Text

The call comes while Amy is alone.

She’s standing in the kitchen, sunlight pooling across the counter, a mug cooling untouched in her hands. Her communicator vibrates once. Then again.

She almost ignores it.

The ID flashes, familiar, international, and long-distance. The kind of call that doesn’t come with a break.

Amy answers anyway.

The voice on the other end is calm. Professional. Careful with its words.

They talk about a city on the other side of the world. About infrastructure failures, displaced civilians, and systems that won’t hold through another season. They talk about need. About how her experience, her leadership, and her steadiness under pressure make her uniquely suited to help.

They don’t hint at any repercussions.

They say it’ll be short, but then they mention no communication. They say it’s a once-in-a-lifetime impact.

Amy listens without interrupting. Her fingers tighten around the mug. The warmth has already faded.

“I’d be on-site,” she repeats, softly. “Full-time?”

“Yes.”

She swallows. “And recovery operations are… ongoing?”

There’s a pause. Just a fraction too long.

“They will be.”

Amy exhales through her nose. “Can I- can I call you back?”

“Of course. Take your time.”

The line goes dead.

Amy doesn’t move right away. She stares at the blank screen, then slowly lowers her hand.

Something settles in her chest. Not fear, she knows fear. This is quieter than that, yet heavier. A sense with no shape yet, only weight on her shoulders.

She turns her head.

Sonic is in the doorway.

Leaning against the frame, arms crossed loosely, quills still damp from a shower. He’s relaxed, smiling at her like the world hasn’t ever given him a reason not to.

“Everything okay?” he asks.

Amy looks at him intently. The ease in his posture. The way his guard is down unlike anywhere else. With anyone else.

She almost tells him right then.

Instead, she smiles.

“Yeah,” she says. “Just… work stuff.”

Sonic nods, unconcerned, already pushing off the frame. “C’mon. You promised we’d make pancakes before we left.”

She watches him walk back to their room, humming to himself, entirely unaware.

Amy glances back at the communicator in her hand.

Then…

They have a rhythm.

It’s not loud. Not flashy. It’s not the kind of love people write legends about. It’s actually much better than that.

Mornings start slow, and Sonic has learned to love them.

He’s up first, most days. Not forcefully, but because Amy likes waking up to the smell of coffee and something warm on the stove. He pretends he’s bad at cooking. He isn’t. He just likes it when she steals bites and “fixes” things.

“You flipped these too early,” Amy says, peering over his shoulder.

Sonic grins. “They were getting impatient.”

“They’re pancakes.” She laughs, leaning into him, resting her chin against his shoulder. Sonic leans in automatically, like he always does when she gets close.

Their mornings are full of this. Small touches, quiet jokes, shared space, and no rush.

They sit at the small table by the window, with sunlight spilling across its surface. Sonic eats fast while Amy eats slowly. He keeps stealing glances at her like he’s making sure she’s still real.

“You’ve been staring.” She says without looking up.

“Can’t I admire my very talented, very patient wife?”

Amy chuckles, going back to drink her coffee.

When Sonic leaves for missions, he always comes back.

When Amy worries, she says it out loud, letting him know. When Sonic spirals, he lets her see it, being vulnerable with her. They trust each other.

In the afternoons, Amy sprawls across the couch with her tablet, planning logistics for whatever she’s involved in that week. Sonic stretches out on the floor, pretending not to listen while she talks through problems out loud.

“Okay,” she mutters, tapping her screen. “If we reroute supplies through the eastern sector-”

“Bad idea,” Sonic says immediately.

She blinks. “You weren’t even listening.”

“Sure I was.”

“You were upside down.”

“Still listening.”

Amy sighs. “Why is it a bad idea?”

“Flooding risk. Plus, that road’s cursed. Not, like, actually cursed, but-”

“But?”

“But everyone who uses it regrets it.”

She smiles despite herself. “You’re impossible.”

“And yet,” Sonic says, grinning up at her, “you keep me.” He winks up at her.

Later, Amy folds laundry while Sonic sprawls across the bed, tossing socks at her.

Amy drops a folded shirt onto his chest. “Get up.”

“No.”

“Sonic.”

“Nope.”

She climbs onto the bed and straddles him without hesitation. Sonic freezes, hands flying up instinctively.

“Oh?” he says. “This feels like a trap.”

“It is,” Amy replies sweetly, reaching for the socks.

“You’re abusing your power.”

She flicks a sock at his face. “You love it.”

He laughs, loud and easy, and lets her win as they share a deep kiss.

Evenings are quieter.

They cook together or don’t. Sometimes Amy makes him sit down and wait just so Sonic doesn’t eat half the meal before it ever hits a plate.

They talk about nothing. They talk about everything.

There are no raised voices. No slammed doors. Disagreements happen, but they don’t linger. They end in compromise, or laughter, or Sonic conceding dramatically and declaring Amy the victor of the century.

At night, they slow down even more.

He doesn’t pace. He doesn’t bolt at the slightest noise. He curls in close, arm slung loosely over Amy’s waist, breathing evening out in a way it never does anywhere else.

Amy traces patterns into his fur, absentminded, grounding both of them in their bed.

“You ever think about the future?” Sonic asks one night, voice soft in the dark.

Amy smiles, eyes closed. “All the time.”

“Scary?”

“Sometimes.”

“Worth it?”

She turns slightly, pressing a kiss to his jaw. “With you? Yeah.”

Sonic exhales, tension leaving him like he didn’t realize it was there.

“Amy.”

“Mhm?”

“What do you think about…”

He stays silent a bit too long, and Amy knows he’s nervous, so she reaches out to cup his cheek, stirring him to look at her. She gently whispers to him.

“About what? You can tell me.”

Sonic locks eyes with her. Even though it’s dark, the moon spotlights Amy’s light green eyes, and the blue hedgehog can’t help but be compelled by them.

“About… having… kids?”

Wow.” Now it was Amy’s turn to be quiet.

The cobalt hero panics. His eyes are wide open, and his voice comes out carefully. “W-what?”

The pink hedgehog kept quiet for a beat before responding, exasperated. “I-I thought you’d never ask!” Her cheeks turned a shade darker than her fur.

“So, is that a yes?” He looks at her attentively.

Amy nods her head fast, excitedly, and sits up, pulling Sonic up for a hug. They embrace each other closely, melting into a warm kiss which quickly turns to lustful touches and kisses all night long.

This is what they have.

No drama or chaos, just passion and safety.

She watches Sonic with tasseled quills, rummaging through a cabinet, utterly at home. Utterly unaware.

Amy presses a hand to her chest and looks at him fondly.

“Found it! Ima go text this to Tails and get ready, you got it back there, right, Ames?”

“Yeah, don’t worry, but they’re coming in about ten minutes!”

The sun is just past its peak. The kitchen smells of toasted bread and fruit preserves by the time Sonic comes out of their room dressed up.

Amy has the windows open, letting the late-afternoon breeze wander through the kitchen while she stirs a pot on the stove. Sonic hugs her from behind, surprising her, before she turns around to a pleasant view.

“Gee, I’ll never get over how good you look in-”

“Don’t mention the pants,” he joked lightheartedly. “But you…” He takes one of her hands and twirls her around. “Look absolutely beautiful in that dress.” Amy giggles and hugs him back, while Sonic places a sweet kiss on her neck, taking in her flowery perfume.

He moves around her easily, wordless and attentive, while setting plates out, rinsing vegetables, and checking the oven when Amy forgets to.

“Hey,” she says softly, reaching for his wrist as he passes. “You don’t have to hover.”

Sonic smiles, leaning down to give her another kiss on her temple. “I know. I just like being useful.”

She laughs quietly. “You always are.”

The knock comes just as Sonic is wiping his hands on a towel. He opens the door to Rouge’s familiar grin and Shadow’s reserved presence just beside her.

“Hope we’re not early,” Rouge says, already stepping inside. “I was promised food.”

“You’re right on time,” Amy says warmly, moving to hug her. “Come in.”

Shadow inclines his head. “Thanks for having us.”

“Always,” Amy replies.

Lunch spills naturally into the dining room as sunlight slants across the table, dishes passed hand to hand. Sonic sits close to Amy, his knee pressed gently against hers, his hand resting at the small of her back without thinking about it.

“You two are disgustingly domestic,” Rouge says fondly, sipping her drink.

Amy smiles, unfazed. “Is that a complaint?”

“Absolutely not. I just need to emotionally prepare myself. Speaking of, I already have a date tonight.”

Amy’s eyes light up. “With Knuckles?”

Rouge groans. “Yes, and before you ask, no, I cannot cancel.”

“No, you go enjoy your night.” Amy says. “But would you at least want to take leftovers?”

“Oh, I’m good, hun, but thank you. I’d love to join y’all for dinner,” Rouge admits honestly. “Believe me, but if I’m late again, he’ll brood for a week.”

Sonic grins. “That long?”

“Minimum.”

Laughter filled the room as Amy stacked the dishes with the help of Rouge. Sonic lingers, fiddling with a napkin, tossing playful jabs at Shadow. Shadow responds with that rare, faint smirk, letting Sonic think he’s winning.

Afterward, they move to the backyard, a small routine for quiet Sundays. Sonic races Shadow in a quick dash around the garden, grinning ear to ear. Meanwhile, Amy and Rouge cheer both of them on. Rouge yells playful taunts, “No cheating, Sonic!” “Shadow, don’t go easy!”

Shadow keeps pace but never pushes Sonic too far, letting the friendly rivalry play out safely. Sonic trips over a root, rolls dramatically, and Shadow simply shakes his head with the faintest smile. Amy laughs until she doubles over, clutching her sides.

Later, Sonic is perched on the counter, spinning a mug in one hand, while Amy is touching up Rouge for her date. Shadow stands quietly near the doorway, arms crossed, watching the chaos unfold like a judge who secretly enjoys the trial.

Sonic grins, showing his phone screen. “Come on, Shadow, admit it. I’m the better chef here. Pancakes this fluffy? I rest my case.”

Shadow doesn’t move. “You’re spinning that mug like a toy, and that photo looks like it was taken on a potato. Besides, technique matters more than flair.”

Amy laughs, setting Rouge’s hair down. “See? I told you. Shadow always has to be right.”

Rouge raises a brow. “Yeah, I can’t with that man’s ego.”

Sonic turns to Shadow. “Or maybe I should just prove you wrong.”

Shadow’s lips twitch. “Keep dreaming, hedgehog.”

Amy shakes her head, smiling softly. “You two are so troublesome.”

Sonic leans toward her, mock-whining. “Troublesome? You’re troublesome! You let him lecture me!”

“Only when you deserve it,” she replies. She glances at Shadow, giving him a small, kind smile. “And you always do.”

Shadow’s expression softens just a fraction. “Noted.”

Afterwards, they play cards.

Shadow claims he doesn’t play. Rouge calls him a liar. Sonic insists on being the dealer despite having no idea what he’s doing.

“This is not how this game works,” Shadow says flatly.

Sonic squints at the cards. “It’s how it works now.”

Rouge is about to say something before Amy leans closer to her, whispering conspiratorially. “Just let him have this.”

Shadow glances at them, then back at the mess of cards.

Sonic beams. “See? I bring people together.”

Amy watches the two of them from the corner of her eye. Sonic’s easy confidence and Shadow’s restrained presence. They’re opposites in motion, in instinct, but there’s something solid between them. A trust neither of them would ever say out loud.

She likes that. She likes knowing Shadow has a place here. That he’s not alone.

When the game dissolves into laughter and cheating accusations, Amy gets up to make tea. Shadow follows her into the kitchen, quieter now that Sonic is distracted, rearranging the cards, and bickering with Rouge into what he calls “a better system.”

“You didn’t have to come if you didn’t want to.” Amy says softly, setting the kettle on.

Shadow shrugs. “I wanted to.”

She smiles at that. “You’re always welcome.”

There’s a pause.

“You’ve built something good here.” Shadow says after a moment. Not judgment, just mere observation.

Amy’s hands still briefly. “We have.”

Shadow looks back toward the living room, where Sonic is now sprawled on the floor, humming to himself. “He’s… different with you.”

Amy’s smile softens. “So is he with you.”

Shadow blinks, then looks away. “I doubt that.”

“I don’t.” she says gently.

The kettle whistles. The moment passes.

They bring the tea back into the living room. Sonic immediately steals Amy’s mug.

“Hey!”

“I’m testing it.”

“You already tested yours!”

“This one might be better.”

Shadow raises a brow. “You’re insufferable.”

Sonic hands the mug back with a grin, “And you still decided to come over.”

“Someone has to make sure you don’t burn the house down.”

Amy laughs, curling into Sonic’s side as the night stretches on. A movie plays in the background, something they’ve all seen before. No one’s really watching it.

Rouge checks the time, visibly torn.

“I really hate to run,” she says, standing. “This was nice, thanks, guys.”

“You’re always welcome,” Amy says, hugging her again. “Tell Knuckles we say hi.”

“Of course,” Rouge says, thankful. She glances at Shadow. “Thanks for the ride, hun, I’ll see you back home.”

Shadow nods. “Call me if anything.”

After she leaves, the house settles into a quiet ambience. Shadow stands after a while. “It’s late.”

Sonic groans. “You’re always the responsible one.”

“Someone has to be.”

Amy rises too. “You can stay, you know.”

Shadow hesitates. “I don’t want to impose.”

“You’re not,” Sonic says immediately. “Couch is yours. I call dibs on judging you if you snore.”

He rolls his eyes, “I don’t snore.”

Amy chuckles at their banter, “Well, it was nice having you and Rouge over, you’re both welcome anytime.”

“Thank you, but before I leave, I’d like to help you clean up.”

“That’s so sweet of you, Shadow, but you really don’t have-”

Sonic quickly interrupts Amy and, out of nowhere, hands a sponge to Shadow. “Then you’re on dishes!”

Amy is taken by surprise and a bit embarrassed by her husband’s actions. “Oh my god, Sonic, why you-” She presses a hand to her forehead.

Shadow nods. Efficient as ever.

They work in companionable silence for a while. Amy hums softly. Sonic occasionally brushes past her, murmuring apologies, kissing her cheek when she glances his way.

Shadow watches without comment, and something in his expression eases. It isn’t performative affection, but rather natural and caring.

While they’re all tidying up the place, Amy asks Shadow about his week. Sonic listens, attentive. When Shadow speaks, Amy gives him her full attention, nodding and asking questions. Sonic doesn’t interrupt. He doesn’t compete for attention. He just stays close and grounded.

They have a good time chatting before Shadow finishes washing the last plate and heads towards the door, grabbing his jacket from the coat rack. Amy and Sonic both hug him, saying their goodbyes before the door closes softly behind Shadow.

When she turns, Sonic is watching her in a trance. There’s something quieter in his expression now. Less performance with less company, it’s just them.

“Well,” he says lightly, breaking the silence, “guess it’s just us again.”

Amy smiles, slow and fond. “Guess so.”

She crosses the room and sits beside him on the couch, tucking her legs under herself. The space between them feels charged in a way that’s familiar and comfortable.

Sonic reaches for her hand without thinking. Their fingers lace together effortlessly, as if by muscle memory.

“You okay?” he asks.

She nods. “Yeah. Just… a bit tired.”

He mirrors her response with a soft smile. “Me too.”

The TV hums quietly in the background, some forgotten movie neither of them is watching. Amy turns slightly toward him, her knee brushing his thigh. Sonic’s thumb starts tracing absent circles over her knuckles.

“You ever notice,” he says softly, “how quiet the house feels when everyone leaves?”

“I mean, besides it being obvious,” she answers. “It’s still missing something.”

He laughs quietly at that. “That’s exactly it.”

She leans closer, resting her head against his shoulder. Sonic shifts instinctively, arm wrapping around her, pulling her in until she fits against his side like she always does.

For a few seconds, that’s all it is, warmth and comfort.

Then Amy tilts her head up.

She doesn’t rush anything as she looks at him, green eyes soft, searching his face like she’s memorizing it. Sonic’s breath catches due to how seen he feels.

He leans in slowly, giving her every chance to pull away, and unsurprisingly, she doesn’t. Her lips meet his with gentle certainty, the kiss unhurried and deep in the way only long familiarity allows.

Amy’s hand slides into his fur, fingers curling at the nape of his neck. Sonic exhales into the kiss, his free hand settling at her waist, steady and grounding.

The kiss lingers and deepens. They part briefly, foreheads touching, breaths mingling.

“You’re warm,” she says softly.

He smiles. “You always say that.”

“Because you always are!” She snickers.

She kisses him again, faster this time, softer at first before pressing closer. Sonic responds instinctively, arm tightening just a little as he pulls her into his lap. Amy settles there easily, like it’s the most natural thing in the world.

Her hands rest on his shoulders now, thumbs brushing along his collarbone. Sonic kisses a trail briefly from her cheek to her jaw before returning to her lips.

“Still tired?” he murmurs against her mouth.

She giggles. “Not anymore.”

That’s all he needs.

The kiss grows warmer, more desperate. Amy tilts her head, chasing his mouth when he pulls back just enough to breathe. She smiles against his mouth mid-kiss, and Sonic can’t help the way his grin breaks through and laughs softly against her lips, a quiet sound that makes her complain and giggle.

“God, you’re so eager,” she says playfully.

“Can’t help it.”

She kisses him again as an answer.

They shift back against their bed and sheets, still wrapped around each other, sweaty, and their clothes on the floor. Sonic’s hand slides up her back, fingers splaying gently between her shoulders. Amy’s forehead rests against his as they pause again, breathing together.

“I love this,” she whispers.

Sonic presses a kiss to her temple, then her forehead. “I know.”

Amy curls closer, her head resting against his chest now. Sonic’s arms come around her fully, holding her there, chin resting lightly atop her head carefully.

The world feels small in the best way.

They stay like that for a long time, kissing occasionally, slow and unhurried, like they’re stretching the moment as far as it will go. There’s laughter, soft murmured words, the quiet certainty of being home with the person who knows you best.

Eventually, Amy shifts slightly, tilting her face up again.

“One more?” she asks, smiling.

Sonic grins. “Always.”
