Rejection and Adoration

Summary:

Colin Creevey realizes his crush finds him irritating, and then that actually, everyone does. These new realizations crush him, and cause him to become withdrawn from all those around him. Harry notices the difference in Colin’s outgoing demeanor changing, and tries to help him.

Notes:

Hello! First, this is a work that has been adopted from Fanfic.net, where it was called ‘Rejection’. The original author wrote the first 9 chapters. We have edited and changed a few parts, and added a few lines here or there, such as keeping it mostly third person perspective but is mostly Kenny0208’s original words are still here. The Original can be found here.

ColinCreeveyDennicCreevey has loved this story and wanted an end to it for many years. In 2022, he wrote an end to Rejection and posted it here on Ao3 (watch the tags, it ends quite different to this story.) And then I read that story, and I enjoyed it. We decided together to write a happier ending for Colin and Harry 13 years after the original fanfic publication! This is entirely written for the love of the original fanfiction. We were unable to reach Kenny0208 as he hasn’t been active on ff.net in a decade, however the last chapter he posted he put up a notice that the fic was up for adoption.

Only the last two chapters are incomplete. After this initial chapter, I will post on Tuesday and Thursday. I do hope you enjoy this story as much as we do!

Chapter Text

Colin Creevy has always been a very happy and energetic person. His mum would even say that as a baby he was never grumpy and hardly ever cried. When he grew a little more, he learned to walk and became very energetic. loving  to explore around the house and yard around, vivid imagination propelling him to his next make-believe adventure.

One year for Christmas, Coilin’s dad bought him a camera, so that he could keep the memories of the things he discovered, and the games he played. It wasn’t long before his dad was proclaiming that Colin would make a fantastic photographer, his Mum on the other hand, wasn’t so sure a kid should be worrying about work ahead of them, and knowing what they should do professionally.

It wasn’t many years until Colin received a curious cream envelope informing him that all the weird stuff that happened around him was magic, and that he had been envioted to a school of magic and wizardry.  Colin didn't really have any friends in his  primary school, so it was no loss for him. He dreamer of making lots of friends in Hogwarts though. And he'd have his camera with him to capture every moment of his ‘fantastic’ new life at wizard school.

Colin was awestruck when he learned that another student at the school was a celebrity. He spent all night on his first night at school reading about him in his history book. The next day, Colin took his first picture of him. It probably would've been more polite to ask him first instead of just flashing his camera in his face, but Coilin didn't really think about that at the time. Then he was nice to Colin, so naturally Colin thought he had made his first friend. From then on, Colin would say hi to him when he passed Harry in the hallways, and take any chance that he could to talk to him. That's what friends were supposed to do, right? And he took so many pictures of his new friend to send home to his mum, so that she could be happy that he finally had a new friend.

Towards the end of his second year, Colin realized he wasn't following him around because he wanted to be his friend. His mind wasn’t full of dark curly black locks and green eyes becasue he wanted to be friendly with him. Colin knew that he didn't have a chance with him, because he was most likely straight. And if he was gay, he could probably do much better than him. But his friendship and the chance just to see him every day was more than enough.

Then one day he saw him in the hallway.

"Hiya, Harry!" he greeted him same as he usually did.

"Hi, Colin," he said right back, like so many times before. But this time, he noticed something that he hadn't before. Harry turned his head to his friends, the girl and the red head, and rolled his eyes.

Colin felt his chest tighten slightly when he saw this. He started remembering all of the times that he encountered him. Harry would react with either reluctance or forced politeness. So Colin made a silent, sad promise to himself that if he didn't want him around, then he wouldn't bother Harry Potter anymore.

In those last few weeks of second year, though, he noticed that it wasn't just Harry that cringed at his presence. Almost everyone he knew would act the exact same way as Harry whenever he came around. The day he made this realization, he skipped his last few classes and spent the rest of the day with his head shoved into a pillow so that the sound of his crying wouldn't echo in the lonely dorm.
