Chapter 1: Get out of your head

Chapter Text

Clack! Is what Cole heard as he missed the goal for the millionth time; he was panting, trying to catch his breath while wiping sweat from his brow. It was well past four, and his whole team had left, including the coaches. His friends had invited him to dinner after practices, which he completely denied he needed to stay focused; the big game was in a few weeks, and he needed to be the best for his team if only he could score this fucking goal.
“FUCK! Why won't you go in the fucking goal?” Cole shouted to the ceiling. He clenched his stick in his fists, trying to calm down.
“Maybe if you fixed your stance, you’d be more in control,” a distant voice called. Coles' whole body twisted over to the entrance to the ice, where he saw a tall, blond man. The next second, he heard skates on the ice, then a close heat behind him.
“Here, legs apart, shoulders loose, and mount your legs,” the stranger said with his hands on Coles, guiding him.
“Oh,” Cole sighed. He'd forgotten about mounting his feet in his haste to get better.
“Uh, thanks, um.” Cole stuttered
“Zane Julien, and you are?” the man stated
“Cole, Cole Brookstone,” he stated, pulling away from Zane to stick his hand out. Zane gladly accepted the hand to shake.
“ Thanks I completely forgot about mounting,” Cole spoke kinda ashamed about it.
“No problem, you were working pretty tough, something big happened?” Zane questioned with concern
“No, not really, I should be better than this. I've been playing since I was a kid, so I should know how to mount my feet,” Cole complained, lifting his skate in the air to be dramatic. Which got a giggle out of zane
“You're very amusing, but every player can make any kind of mistake. That's what my dad says when I forget parts of things I should know,” Zane spoke with a slight grin on his face, letting go of Cole's hand. They stand there for a good two or three minutes just staring at each other, big icy blues to deep browns.
“Well, I should probably head out, gotta get some sleep,” Cole sighed, exhausted, and he started to skate towards the exit from the ice.
“It was nice meeting you, Cole. I hope to see you again.” Zane said, a grin coming to his face as he leapt to grab his stick to play. Cole had gotten his stuff packed and ready to head out.
“Same here, see ya, Zane, and thanks for the help,” Cole spoke, facing the ice with one of the biggest smiles.
“Glad I could be of assistance, but remember to stay out of your head, the game out here,” Zane replied with that Cole walked out, letting the big metal doors close behind him with a bang.

The next morning was uneventful. Cole got up, ate breakfast, and then got on the bus for school. Once he was on the bus, he was immediately screamed at by his friends in the back
“COLE! BACK HERE!” Jay has been Cole's best friend since grade school.
“Jay, shut up.” Lloyd voiced irritated hitting the back of Jay's head.
“Ow! That hurt Lloyd." Jay shrieked
“Good, maybe you'll shut up,” Lloyd explained. Cole went and sat down in the seat next to Lloyd and Jay. Being the closest to him. Cole set down his bag, taking out his phone to check up on something, but then his phone was snatched from his hand.
“Hey! What the hell was that for!” Cole hollered
“You gonna explain why you've been dodging to hang out with us?” Jay ask phone in hand
“Yeah, it has been a while since we've done something.” Lloyd pressed, turning to face Cole
“Just been busy, we have to be the best, and the big game is in a few weeks.” Cole sighed, his shoulders falling,
“Cole, come on! Really the game will be fine with you as the captain will do great. “ Jay exclaimed
“Hes right Cole, your the best on the team we'll be fine.”Lloyd added
“I know it's just-” Cole paused to take a breath “I can be better I know I can.” he finished. Both Llyod and Jay looked at him with worry but they both ended up sighing but Jay perked up saying
“It's fine but come to us and we can help you, you're not alone” the rest of the bus ride was quiet leaving Cole to ponder what both Jay and Zane said but his mind was just drawn back to the blond. The man was honestly cute, the slight grin he had was just amazing. But Cole shook those thoughts he needed to focus on school and the game practice was tonight so he should be fine, as he shook his head to forget him he needed to focus but could he, No he has to and with that the bus came to a halt and everyone began to shuffle out.
“Well let's go, we got a long day ahead of us.” Jay whined walking to the math hall “See you guys at practise BYE!” Jay gushed as he ran the other direction
“See ya, come on Cole lets get to bio” Lloyd was already walking away but Cole took a minute to ponder if they were right about what he was doing was correct maybe
“Wait up” he shouted ahead.

The day had gone better than what Cole had expected: easy assignments he smoothed by and got done in class, light gym work so he wasn't tired all day, and his rest period was spent hanging with Jay. Well, he skipped social studies.
“Bro you're gonna get caught one of these days you've missed his class how many times?” Cole questioned well taking a sip of water.
“Um, about 10 times this semester but I make it to all the important days, the test, check in regularly so I think I'll be fine.” Jay replied Cole just rolled his eyes in reply
“What! His class is so boring I can't stand it.” Jay complanded
“Yeah but one day-” Cole was immediately cut off by the bell “wow looks like the days are done, come on let go find Lloyd for practice." he continued to stand up to stretch his back.
“Yeah, your probably right coach will kill us if we're all late again.” Jay remarked well standing. It took them a good two minutes to find Lloyd walking out of the art hall.
“Hey guys come on we got like three more minutes before we're late”Lloyd called out running in the direction of the rink Jay and Cole followed in suit. Through the crowded mess of peaple they finally made it to the rink, got changed, and were walking out to the ice only to hear shouts and yells.
“We scheduled the rink today for practices you need to leave!” coach garmadon shouted getting pissed you could see his fist close around his clipboard.
“No we did, and lower your voice no need to yell.” the other person scolded but that's when Cole peaked up to ask.
“Um coach what happing” skating out to him
“This coach says he booked the ice when I know I did.” garmadon said still mad
“We can take this up to the director but I will not argue with you anymore.” The other coach insisted on walking up to the director's office.
“Oh no you don't wait up.” Garmadon scolded back, gliding to catch up with him. Cole was dumbfounded that it was weird to over book teams like this but who cares they'll get it figured out.
“Wow what was that about?”Jay questioned gliding next to Cole
“Yeah my dad was pretty mad, hope he doesn't take it out on us.” Lloyd observed follow in suit after Jay
“They overbooked the ice with two teams, weird right” Cole remarked, turning to face them as they continued to talk. Cole caught a glimpse of bright blond hair, with the biggest blue eyes looking dead at him.
“Zane?”
