Chapter 1: Sharing a bed ( New York case)

Chapter Text

A patter could be heard as rain slowly fell from the sky and hit the sidewalk near the street. The light of cars illuminated the rain falling on the street creating a beautiful contrast of white crystals falling on the dark street below.

Two teenagers could be seen walking down the street.

Well, one actually since the other was passed out, long since taken out from the deep cold she acquired, and the ongoing fever that wouldn't seem to stop.

Even becoming higher due to the rain and chilly winds of the night in New York.

The other one, carrying her bridal style as he traversed the sidewalks hoping to reach home soon enough.

The house his mother had rented wasn't this far away, it wasn't that big of a house.

Nothing grand just a small flat with a kitchen and two separate bedrooms.

Honestly, since it was only needed for the next three days before they return to the other house back in Los Angeles where his father currently resides unable to join their trip.

As he walked he had a pensive expression on his face, the moment he shared with that long silver-haired man and the light brown haired girl in his arms couldn't leave his mind.

Whoever saw them at that moment would think he was composed during the entire exchange with the serial killer on the loose.

Meeting him on the roof was scary enough then remembering his company made his fear root deeper into his bones.

He lost all sense as he ran to the edge of the staircase and looked down.

There he saw her. That was the only time he wished she weren't there. Wished that he didn't see her there.

After all, he is after young girls, after their heads. He never understood how people joined in murdering.

Apparently from the news reports and various police recorders, it's stated that the silver-haired man tended to find phycotic enjoyment in seeing their heads detach from their necks and the blood that splatters onto the ground.

He looked down at her again. Seeing her faint mid-conversation with the serial killer fueled his fear.

In the end, they went out safe, of course without a bit of mental scaring for both.

He's just happy that she no longer thinks so lowly of herself, to think she drilled herself as the culprit just because she couldn't help but save the woman whose heart was cruel and killed someone she saw as a lover.

It's absurd to him, all she did was save a soul from dying which is the bravest thing any girl her age could do.

Now that he thinks about it even boys their age wouldn't do such a thing.

He's very proud to call her his best friend, he's very proud of her.

He held her closer to him as he walked home faster hoping to get home before she was soaked or before her fever got worse.

The moment he got there he quickly pulled out the keys his mother gave him, she expected their home already which in his defence he hadn't really expected to happen.

He pried open the door with one hand while the other held Ran closer to him.

He entered the house closing the door and tossing the keys to the table near the entrance and quickly took off to one of the bedrooms.

He placed her down gently and got his phone out of his pocket to dial his mother's number hoping she'd answer rather quicker than she always does.

Thankfully she picked up only after three rings.

(which is very unusual for his mother)

"Mom, I've returned home where are you?"

He could hear the distant chatter of officers and the printing of what could be a fax in the police station.

"Oh, Shinichi I can't really call now if you need anything there is food in the fridge I'm sure you could manage."

She was talking very fast enough for him to barely understand half of the words she was saying.

"I still have to attend to the case you solved and the police aren't letting me out of this.

Goodbye, love you!"

Before he could really absorb what she said and articulate a response she had already ended the phone call.

He sighed before moving towards Ran who was residing on the bed, she had her eyes closed tightly and her breathing was getting deeper from the high fever she had.

He quickly runs to the bathroom and acquires a towel, wets it with water, and rinses back to her.

Isn't it funny? He's always the one to run back to her while she is the one who's waiting.

She never waited for him more than a few weeks (his time in Hawaii being the longest he's been away from her since they first met) and he'd always return to her no matter what.

He may be only 15 but she means the world to him, it took him a smile to fall in love and a few weeks to realize his feelings, but it's going to take him a lifetime to truly understand her.

She's a difficult case to solve but god does he want to solve her. He wants to understand the clues and find the evidence and connect them together so he can finally be the perfect friend, lover, or pillar in life.

No matter what she was to him, he wanted to be perfect for her.

However he has yet to solve the difficult case called Mouri Ran, and with the case he had solved with his mother he's ready to try time and time again to solve her.

He runs to her bedside and gently lays the towel on her forehead before returning to the bathroom and retrieving a bowl of water, he sets it down on the nightstand beside her, drags a chair, and places it near her bed.

He tumbles down into the chair and simply stares at her.

She was everything to him. His muse, something that inspires him to be greater, to truly perfect his art.

She is also the light at the end of the tunnel in his darkness, these lonely hours at home being alone and that sinking feeling he still couldn't understand that claws his heart and leaves it numb or aching, she was the only source of light amid it all.

She was the one who'd come and get him out of it, she was the one who understood him.

Yet, he has yet to understand her.

What a waste, a detective couldn't understand the heart of the women he loves.

It humbles him.

During his musings, Ran's eyes flustered open and tried to assess where she was.

She looks around before her eyes fall on him.

The only one in this world who truly brings her comfort in this world, no matter how depressed she was he's always there to lighten her world up.

She smiles before feeling something cold lying on her forehead. She blinks up at him smiling down at her, applying a damp cloth on her forehead to bring her fever down.

He then faces her and smiles.

"Hey you." She gazes back at him and throws him the most smug smirk she could muster (in her condition anyway).

"Hey." They both laugh quietly before their laughter eventually dies down.

Thie comfortable silence between has always been something that just settles smoothly with each other.

Ran tried to will her eyes open but the exhaustion is weighing her down rapidly and before she knew it she was dragged into slumber once again.

Shinichi just smiled and layed his hand on her forehead, waiting for her to actaully fall asleep.

Before long her breathing evened out and her chest slowly but surely fell.

He glanced at a clock nearby to see its very late and that his mother had taken her sweet time at the station.

He sighs then glances at the empty spot beside Ran..... this might make her uncomfortable but.. she did sometimes ask to sleep beside him when she was scared.

And from past experiences he knows him ignoring their little habits just because of whats 'shameful' due to their age and whats not.

So maybe she wouldn't mind this at all.

If she minded she could easily throw him across this room with her karate and hed apologise to her, as easy as that.

He quietly turns to the other side of the bed and gracefully settles down beside her.

Her sleeping face directed in his direction, giving his eyes all the access to gaze at her bueatiful sleeping face.

Her pretty eyelashes innocently laying in her full round rosy cheeks, and her nose that rests on her face, adorning a similar red colour to her cheeks because of fhe fever. Her peaceful expression that gives him a sense of clarity.

Shes truly pretty, gorgeous, not a single word he could think off truly explains her beauty to him.

Not to mention her lips, inviting red lips...

He really should stop looking, his face is already red and he can't be looking for long either.

But the knowledge of her safety and her breath taking face beside him, he lulls into peaceful sleep for the first time in a long time.

The door of the apartment closing could be heard from the living room.

Yukiko kudo made her way inside, she worried that she made Ran and Shinichi wait for long in here since they questioning took a long time.

She sighed ready to put her head into the pillows and sleep, but before that she had to check on her future daughter in law!

She quickly made her way to their room, the place was quite enough to deduce thats where they'd be found.

She slowly opened to door as not to startle them ( maybe something exciting is happening inside ! She cant distrust that) she peered inside.

And oh god what a pleasant surprise it was!

Her sweet shin-chan was sleeping with an adorable smile on his face hugging a very peaceful looking (and smiling !) Ran-chan close to him!

'Hehehe this trip was definitely not ruined !'

Giddy about the view infront of her she quietly snapped a picture and closed the door slowly.

She plasterd a 'couple in the room, do not disturb' before she made her way into her room to tell her darling husband of the sweet veiw she saw !

Notes:

I have three shinran fics other than this in the works since shinran seems to lack a LOT of fics and there isnt enough shinran appreciation out there so I finally decided to make up for it.
