taking care of those you love (and being taken care of)

Work Text:

Horse wouldn't call herself good at taking care of others. Until recently, she just didn't have many opportunities to. Rider was always stubborn just like Horse was, which meant the two often took more care of themselves in each other's company than taking care of the other.

“Can I, um,” she stammered as she peeked her head into Wammawink's room on the houseboat. “Help? With anything?"

Wammawink sighed with the effort of moving, sitting up in her bed with a blanket still wrapped around her shoulders. She shivered, shaking her head with a tired smile. “No, I'm alright.” She said.

Horse lingered, slowly stepped into the room. “Are you sure?” She asked, softer this time.

Wammawink was a lot like Rider and Horse, Horse had noticed more and more.

Wammawink nodded, patting her bed for Horse to sit at her side. Horse sat on the floor beside it, wordlessly leaning her head against Wammawink's chest for her to brush her fingers through Horse's mane.

“Your mane is tangled.” Wammawink whispered, hands moving only long enough to lift her blanket in time to cover a sneeze with the fabric. Bubbles escaped her lips with a hiccup after she finished, and Horse suppressed a chuckle at her pout at the sight.

“Here.” Wammawink hummed, pulling out a brush Horse hadn't even seen her grab or conjure. “Let me help.”

Horse turned closer, scooting on the wooden floor until she was sitting close enough for Wammawink to more easily work.

Wammawink's arms moved sluggishly, though Horse tried not to bring attention to it. Wammawink had been stuck in bed all day with this sickness, and Horse knew she was grateful for the company.

“There.” Wammawink leaned over the edge of the bed to see her mane from the front, kissing Horse's nose. “Beautiful.”
