Chapter Text
Seokjin was feeling out of place.
He wore his best - aka eye-catching - clothes and was sitting at the bar of that club. Gladly, the place was not that crowded but had enough people for him to lose sight of his friends. Hoseok, Namjoon and Taehyung were somewhere dancing and probably making out, and Seokjin was left wondering why he let Yoongi convince him to go out.
To be honest, it took Yoongi and his friends a lot to convince him, especially because it had been years since the last time Seokjin went to a club, and it was only the second time he left Soobin, his seven-year-old son, under someone else's care.
Yoongi claimed that he needed to go out and have some fun. He offered to look after Soobin and, to be fair, Seokjin trusted Yoongi with his eyes closed. His best friend had been there since before Soobin was born, and Yoongi helped Seokjin a lot daily.
After being convinced to go out, his friends helped him find something to wear. Seokjin was all about comfortable clothes (he was a young single dad, after all), and he didn’t even remember he owned sexy outfits. He put on black pants, a long-sleeved white crop that only showed his skin whenever he raised his arms anyhow, and Hoseok helped him put on some light make-up, focusing on his eyes.
And now he was sitting by himself all alone, after rejecting two guys gently and wondering if he should just leave.
He had no idea of how to flirt anymore, and he didn’t know how to dance, still a bit shy to do it even in the low lights.
“Seokjin-ssi, here is your drink.” The brown-eyed barman said, and Seokjin looked up when he heard his name. He didn’t remember giving his name to anyone nor ordering a drink already. “Hi.” The guy said as soon as Jin’s eyes widened in recognition.
Jungkook, the barista from the coffee place he goes to almost every day.
“Oh, Jungkook-ah!”
“It’s on me. I saw you here, which I must admit was a surprise because I swear I haven’t seen you here before, and decided to make a drink based on your coffee orders that I know by heart.”
Seokjin smiled at him; It was good to see a friendly face.
“Oh, a man after my heart. Yeah, it’s not really my scene, but my friends told me I should go out and have some fun.” He said and shrugged his shoulders before pulling the drink Jungkook made for him a bit closer.
“And are you? Having fun?”
“They went to the dance floor and are probably making out now. I was about to leave, so yeah, not really.”
“I’m sorry to hear that, but. It’s not really crowded tonight, so I can come and talk to you eventually, if you want me to, of course.”
Seokjin looked at his eyes and smiled. Jungkook was really handsome, and they’ve been flirting with each other at the cafe where he works. Seokjin also would never admit it to Yoongi, but he goes there only to see Jungkook. The man is always so attentive and careful, it makes his heart melt a bit every time - and he really liked the attention. He’s been deprived of it for too long.
In the beginning, Seokjin didn’t really pay much attention to the guy, but he’s been going there for more than a month now, and he is not that oblivious. Jungkook is always making small talk, always complimenting him, always making sure he would come back the next day… and Seokjin also put a lot of effort into flirting with him. He asked way too many times what he should order from the menu, he always made sure to make Jungkook talk and talk and talk - which he learned that Jungkook really enjoyed when he felt comfortable around someone.
Seeing him there, in the club, was a breath of fresh air and also a little exciting. Jin had no plans of leaving with someone, nor kissing someone, but he would not refuse talking to the guy he had had a visible crush on for some time.
“That would be good, yes, but I don’t want to get in the way of your work. What if your boss gets mad?”
“He won’t.” He said, simply. Jin nodded and took a sip from his drink.
“This is good.” He said and Jungkook’s smile was even bigger.
“Irish coffee.” He stated. “Whiskey and hot coffee, no sugar because I know you like your coffee a bit bitter and a really small portion of chantilly.”
“This is probably my only drink for the night. I’m a lightweight and I can’t handle much whiskey.”
“That’s why there’s more coffee than alcohol in there, so you don’t get drunk.” He explained and Jin nodded, taking another sip.
It was really delicious and, indeed, was not strong at all. The coffee was bitter just the way he liked it but the alcohol was a really small portion of the drink.
“Thank you, Jungkook.”
“I’ll be right back.” He said and went to serve another customer. There was enough time for a random guy to sit by Jin’s side and start talking about how handsome he was and how they should be dancing.
“I’m going to stay here, I’m sorry. You can go find someone else to dance with, though.” He suggested, trying not to sound rude when rejecting the guy who, gladly, only smiled in understanding and left the stool vacant by Jin’s side.
“You’re popular.” Jungkook’s voice resonated, and Jin shook his head.
“I’m really not.”
“It’s the third guy you reject in a span of what? Half an hour?” He paused. “I didn’t even know you were gay, to be honest.”
“Bi. I’m bi.” Jin said, and Jungkook smiled at him.
“Good to know. I’m gay, and I spent quite some time trying to figure out if my flirting with you was working or if you were just a really nice straight guy.”
Jungkook was bold.
Really bold.
Seokjin wasn’t expecting him to acknowledge their obvious flirting at the cafe. To be fair, he thought they would flirt like they always do, and hopefully Jin would go home feeling good about himself.
Seokjin smiled shyly and shifted his gaze to the drink in front of him. A beat of silence, and Jungkook spoke again:
“I’m sorry, didn’t mean to sound arrogant- I was just-“
“You’re fine. Really. Don’t worry. It’s just… It’s been a while since the last time I flirted with someone.”
“I don’t believe that at all.” He said, snorting a bit. “I flirt with you almost every day, and I’m sure you’re aware of how handsome you are.”
Seokjin knew that; he knew he was handsome, and he had his fair share of people trying to hit on him, but people don’t usually hit on men with kids (because they usually think he’s in a relationship already), and he mostly is with Soobin whenever he goes out.
“It’s also good to know you’re gay and interested.”
“Yeah?”
“Mhm.” He agreed. Another sip of his bitter and delicious drink. “I think you should go back to work. Your friend there seems to be struggling.”
“I- Seokjin-ssi,” and, surprisingly, Jungkook blushed under the low lights, his eyes a bit hopeful. Different from all the sexy vibe he was going for just a few seconds ago. He looked like he used to during daylight shifts at the cafe. “I take a break in a few minutes. Can we… Talk?”
Seokjin nodded slightly. “Yeah, we can.”
The club got louder, the lights darker and it was clear that people were having fun. Seokjin could spot his friends on the dance floor and he almost missed when Jungkook called his name.
Jin looked at him and Jungkook signaled with his hands, asking them to go outside. He was finally having a break.
It was not cold at all, but when they got out of the stuffy and hot club, Seokjin felt his body shiver slightly under the fresh breeze.
Some people were talking outside, probably waiting for a ride home because it was late enough for some people to just end the night.
Seokjin looked back at Jungkook, who gently and hesitatingly held his hand and took him to an empty spot right in the corner of the alleyway.
“Here we are.” He said, with a confident tone.
“You’re funny. You’re all cute and careful and then you’re… Like this.”
“Like this?”
“Hot. Crazy hot.” He answered and Jungkook chuckled.
“Thank you, I guess. I don’t like being cute that much-“
“Oh, but you are.” He paused. Jungkook rolled his eyes, a smile on his lips. Jungkook took his other hand and took a step closer. Jin let him do it; Jin was almost hypnotized, enchanted.
“How many guys do you usually bring here between your breaks?”
“You’re the first.”
“Oh, come on, we don’t have to lie.”
“I’m not lying. I’m not the kind of guy to do these things. I’m trying really hard here because I’ve been thinking about you quite a lot and how lucky I am to find you here. In this club? during my shift, of all times! It must be something the angels did for me. I had to take my chance.”
Seokjin nodded and leaned back so he would rest his back on the wall behind him.
“I’m glad you did.”
“Can I be bold again?”
“Sure.”
“Can I kiss you? I really want to kiss you-“
He was interrupted by Jin’s lips crashing against his own.
Jin wanted to kiss him so badly and also wanted to give Jungkook something, anything. So he did. He kissed him and Jungkook seemed genuinely surprised by it. It took him a second to kiss him back and to acknowledge that Jin’s hands were on his neck.
Kissing Jungkook was good and sparked something inside of him. He felt wanted after so long and it was nice.
They kept on kissing; innocent but suggestive touches all over each other when Jungkook said: “I think I should go back. My first break is almost over.”
Seokjin sighed and, with reddish lips from all the kissing, he nodded and placed another kiss on Jungkook’s lips.
“I have another break in two hours, at 4 am and I leave at 5. I know it’s really late, but if you feel like waiting, we could do something after.”
“After 5am?”
“Maybe I could take you to my place, maybe you could take me to yours…” Jungkook said and even though he was looking all smug and sexy, his cheeks were blushing. “We can keep talking inside… But if you’re tired and have to go we can set up a date later this week-“
“I’ll stay. We’ll keep talking. If I get tired and really sleepy, I’ll let you know and we can reschedule.”
Jungkook beamed. “The DJs tonight are really good. You should dance for a bit as well.”
“I’m not the best dancer, don’t know about that.”
“I’ll take you to dance in my next break.”
Seokjin kissed him again. “That would be nice, I guess.”
Talking to Jungkook was easy.
And Seokjin was feeling comfortable.
He didn’t know if he would stay until 5 am just to have a hook up with him at the break of the dawn, but he was having fun.
He texted Yoongi earlier, when he said he would be going home soon because he was feeling a little out of place, and all Yoongi answered was:
If it’s not fun, just go home. Soobin is sleeping already, everything is fine, and you should enjoy your free time as you please. Night, hyung.
His friends came back to the bar after a while and they didn't notice Jin was away for a few minutes…. But Namjoon tilted his head and said:
“You look…. Happier.”
“Right?!” Taehyung exclaimed.
“What happened?” Hoseok asked, looking around.
“Nothing.” He tried. “I’m just having fun tonight.”
“Alone? You didn’t dance for a second-“
“I’ve been talking to people.”
“Whom?”
“Hello.” Jungkook, who was there all along, said. Taehyung squinted his eyes at him for a second there; a wave of protection came over his body… Until he realized it was Jungkook.
“Kookie?”
“Hey, Tae.” Jungkook bowed his head a little. His hands were busy with a drink.
Namjoon and Hoseok didn’t know Jungkook, so they stiffened a bit when they heard the nicknames. Jin didn’t know if they were trying to evaluate Jungkook because he was talking to him or if they were doing it because Taehyung was smiling from ear to ear.
“I haven’t seen you in ages!” Taehyung exclaimed.
“I’ve been busy, working at the cafe and here… I’m just all over the place and really tired to go play.”
“Uhm, do you know each other?”
“Jungkook and I used to work out together, have dance lessons together, play volleyball together…”
“We met playing volleyball once and it was kind of a club so we met a lot in other activities. I’m sorry I’ve been MIA. I know you texted me, but I haven’t had the chance to reply to anyone-“
“Don’t worry about it. It’s nice to know you’re alive.” He paused. “These are my boyfriends. Namjoon and Hoseok.”
“Taehyung talks about you guys a lot. It feels like I know you already from all the stories he told me.”
That seemed to make Hoseok’s shoulders relax a bit.
“And this is Seokjin, a friend of mine, but I guess you already know his name.”
“I usually go to the cafe where he works, daily, but I didn’t know he worked here. He’s been keeping me company since you all disappeared to the dance floor.”
Taehyung shifted his gaze between them and gave Jungkook a knowing look. “We should catch up anytime soon. I feel like you have a lot to update me about.”
“You could pop up at my work. I stopped working out and everything because, uhm, it got a bit expensive, so, yeah.” He said those words in a low voice, a bit ashamed of his current financial situation, which was terrible.
“That’s a great idea. I’ll go there sometime this week. Seokjin-hyung can go with me, show me where it is.”
Jungkook smiled at Taehyung and nodded.
“That would be good, yes.”
Namjoon and Hoseok were only watching the interaction but they caught up on the tension between Seokjin and Jungkook pretty fast.
“We actually are ready to leave. We were worried you didn’t have any fun and we’re sorry-“
“I told you. I’m having fun. You have nothing to worry about.”
“It’s almost four. We can leave you at your place first-“
Seokjin widened his eyes and looked back at Jungkook, who was not facing him, focused on shaking a drink and pretending he was not listening.
“Uhm, I- Are you guys tired already?”
“Yes, and to be honest I’m a bit hungry. If you’re too, we can stop somewhere to eat first.”
“I think I’m going to stay.” Jin said, quickly.
Hoseok arched his eyebrows and Namjoon looked at Jungkook, trying to do it discreetly. Taehyung smiled proudly.
“Alone?” Taehyung asked, teasing.
“I told you. Jungkook and I are talking.”
“Oh.” Namjoon said and shifted his gaze back to Seokjin when Jungkook went to the other end of the bar to get some orders.
“Are you sure?” He whispered the question, not used to his friend being this outgoing and adventurous. Damn, they couldn’t recall the last time they managed to convince Seokjin to be awake after 1 am.
“I’m sure.”
“He’s nice.” Taehyung said. “A sweetheart covered in tattoos.”
Seokjin smiled.
“Alright, but text us when you get home, please.”
“I’m not sure which home-“
“Wait, you- You kissed already!” Hoseok whispered.
Seokjin looked around to see if Jungkook was far - and he was. He only nodded.
“Oh, damn, you’re fast.”
“Eager.” Taehyung corrected and Jin slapped his arm lightly. “Well, Soobinie is staying with hyung until tomorrow, right?”
“Yes.”
“Then have fun.” Hoseok chuckled and hugged his friend goodbye. “Use protection.” He whispered in Jin’s ear, who rolled his eyes.
He was not sure if he was going home with Jungkook or not but he wouldn’t discuss that with his friends at that moment. “Text me when you guys get home safe, please.” He asked his friends. Namjoon promised he would.
They left at that moment and when he looked around, Jin realized that a lot of people had already gone home.
“Are you staying?” Jungkook’s voice made him shift his gaze back to the man at the bar.
“I am, yes. You promised to dance with me.”
They danced, indeed.
Kissed a little more when they found a place a bit more private.
When the clock hit 5 am, Jungkook was ready to go. He asked the guy who worked with him to clean what was left and promised to stay a bit longer in his next shift.
Seokjin was tired and hungry; That night was way different from his usual routine but he felt electricity inside his veins. He was also excited, happy, horny… He really wanted to take Jungkook home, especially after all their making out and with all the pent-up sexual tension between them.
“I live close by. We can walk there, if you feel like coming home with me… Ten minutes and we’ll be there.” Seokjin suggested and Jungkook intertwined their hands and let Jin show him the way.
The younger one couldn’t quite believe that he was going home with the guy he’s been crushing hard for the last four weeks.
He saw Seokjin come and go all by himself, and he always tried to talk about anything: the weather, the coffee, work, politics. He had noticed the guy didn’t wear a ring and that gave him courage even though he didn’t know if he was into men or not.
He always loved it when Seokjin smiled at him, and Jimin, his co-worker, always knew that Jungkook wanted to be the one in charge of his order.
He couldn’t believe it when he saw the guy sitting alone at the bar that night; Everything fell into place, better than he could ever have imagined.
Jungkook started a random conversation, his fingers playing with Seokjin’s while they were walking, and Jungkook dared to ask:
“Have you ever thought about kissing me before tonight?”
Seokjin shook his head.
Jungkook tilted his head, a bit disappointed, per se.
“I always saw you and thought that you were handsome and that you were nice. I always flirted with you and all but I never really gave it a thought because I used to think you were way out of my league.”
That made Jungkook laugh. “Have you ever seen yourself?”
Seokjin shrugged and shifted his gaze back to where they were heading.
They arrived at Jin’s apartment and, as soon as they closed the door behind them, Jin kissed Jungkook while taking off his shoes. The younger one smiled between those kisses, and after taking off his own shoes and putting his jacket on the hanger without really looking at it, he followed Jin inside.
“Your place is really organized.” He said and Jin smiled proudly. He and Soobin always cleaned up after playing and they put every toy inside the closet at the end of the day. It was their rule.
Seokjin didn’t know how to tell Jungkook that he had a son, but, to be fair, he didn’t think Jungkook would be anything other than a one-night stand.
Seokjin didn’t know how to do relationships anymore and even though he enjoyed his company, he was not sure he would be able to keep dating Jungkook if he wanted to.
He had a lot going on with work and Soobin…
And, to be fair, there were small frames on the table with pictures of him and his son. There were some plushies over the couch and other details in the living room that could tell that a child lived there… But Jungkook was definitely not paying any attention to anything besides Seokjin and his lips.
Until his stomach groaned.
Seokjin stopped their kisses and laughed loudly. Jungkook blushed right away.
“I can make you something to eat. I’m hungry as well.” He said, trying to lighten up the mood. Jungkook shook his head and got back on kissing Seokjin, following him to his bedroom.
Another sound. Jin cackled.
“It’s fine. I swear. We can eat some ramen and continue this right after.”
“Ugh.” Jungkook but his lower lip and gave in. He really was hungry but he was horny! He wanted to keep kissing Seokjin without a care in the world.
“Come on, do you work later?” Seokjin asked, trying to look at the clock on the wall even in the dark.
“No. When I work at night, I usually have the next day off at the cafe.” He said and Jin nodded, his fingers holding Jungkook’s waist tightly.
“Great.” Another kiss. “Now, come on, I’ll cook something for us.”
They spent way too much time in that kitchen. Trying to cook while stealing kisses and playfully touching each other was a hard task.
Jungkook talked and talked about his work, his friends, the music he liked and placed various kisses on Jin’s shoulders, over his shirt.
“You have a crazy amount of cereal in this place.”
And Jin did. It was Soobin’s, mostly.
If Jungkook noticed anything else that could tell that Jin had a son, he didn’t say.
Jin cooked ramen and let Jungkook fry some chicken. The sun was already up and both of them were really tired but they were having fun and Jin liked being around Jungkook and his safe embrace.
When they finished cooking, the clock marked almost 6:30 am.
Jungkook spilled some kimchi on his shirt and Seokjin let him borrow another one; one that was huge for Jungkook. Both of them had really strong shoulders, but Jin’s were still broader.
“It would be easier to just stay without a shirt, you know?” The older one teased and Jungkook smiled at him.
“I feel like I talked a lot about myself and that I still don’t know much about you. Tell me, what do you do for a living?”
“I mostly test games?” He tried to explain.
“Shut up.”
“I swear that’s my job. I’m not the one to play and tell if the game is fun or not. I mostly play games to test their user experience. It's fun work and all and I can do it from home so it’s a plus.” Seokjin explained. Jungkook groaned.
“Oh, fuck, you’re so hot even when you talk about games.”
Seokjin laughed again. Jungkook was really straightforward and he liked it; he was all shy at the cafe but getting to know this other side of him was good. Jungkook leaned a bit and mumbled only for Seokjin to hear: “Should we head to your room?”
And Seokjin was a weak man. and a really horny one at the moment. “If you want to eat more,-“
“Hyung, pleeease.” And that was unfair. Jungkook never called him Hyung and hearing it from Jungkook’s lips made his heart race a bit.
Seokjin held his neck and kissed him deeply, their tongues dancing together and all the shyness and nervousness no longer there. They talked a lot and felt comfortable around each other so it was just like having a friend with benefits.
They put all the plates, bowls and kitchen utensils in the washer machine. Jungkook didn’t really want to wait anymore. He managed to sit on the counter after noticing it was strong enough to support his weight and pulled Seokjin closer and closer. He couldn’t stop kissing Jin’s lips. They were already big and soft but now they were reddish and wet; Jungkook was about to lose his mind.
Jin’s hands were over his naked stomach, inside his shirt and Jungkook could smell Jin’s cologne all over himself because of the shirt he was wearing.
Jungkook was never the strongest soldier, anything could get him going. Fast.
“Hyung,-“ he started again but he shushed quickly as soon as he heard the front door opening and closing heavily. His heart was racing and Jin didn’t listen. “Do you live with someone else?-“
“What?”
“Jinnie-“
There was a man at the kitchen door, his eyes widened as soon as he realized that Jin was not alone.
It was Yoongi and it gave Jungkook and Seokjin chills for various reasons.
Jungkook had no idea who that man was; all he knew was what he was seeing. A really handsome man holding a sleeping child in his arms and calling Seokjin as Jinnie in a really soft and warm voice.
All Jungkook thought was that the man was Seokjin’s husband, boyfriend, partner, whatever…
And Jin seemed surprised because Yoongi shouldn’t be there at that hour. He was supposed to take care of Soobin until evening - and he was the one who so insistently made Jin take some time off. So he would never bother Jin if it wasn’t something he couldn’t do alone.
Yoongi didn’t know how to act because he really needed help. Soobin woke up early in the morning with a fever and Yoongi had no medication for children at his place and it took him a while to make Soobin fall asleep again but he would cry if he woke up away from his dad once again when he’s sick.
He didn’t know Seokjin had company; the last text he sent Yoongi was saying that he was bored at the club and that he would go home.
He assumed Seokjin was alone.
Jungkook pushed Seokjin away quickly and tried to make himself presentable, his mind racing and he felt extremely ashamed in front of the guy who, supposedly, had a family with Seokjin and was being cheated on.
Seokjin, on the other hand, rushed to Yoongi and asked: “Is he ok?” All he could focus on was his son and the reason why he was there and not sleeping safely and soundly at Yoongi’s.
Yoongi stared at Jungkook a bit more, trying to recognize where he had seen the guy before. “Who are you?” He asked and Jungkook could feel tears prickling his eyes, a rush of emotions getting the best of him.
He shook his head. “I’m sorry. I’m sorry. I didn’t know he had a partner- You never told me you were married! What is wrong with you?!” Jungkook took his time between bowing and apologizing for a really confused Yoongi and sending glares to Seokjin.
The younger one was feeling used and pathetic.
And he managed to rush outside as fast as he could, feeling ashamed.
He ignored Seokjin’s voice calling his name a few times and the heavy eyes of the man at the door.
After walking down a few streets, he finally let himself breathe. It was too early in the morning for him to call anyone and he felt guilt creep up his body.
How could he be so naive? He didn’t really pay attention to Seokjin’s place; he probably would’ve spotted a few family pictures.
He was too horny to think.
He got home safely and quickly. Usually, after a bad night, he would call his friend Jimin but he probably would wake up for work in a few minutes and Jungkook didn’t feel like being a nuisance, so he showered thoroughly and went straight to bed after telling himself he shouldn’t cry about it.
Seokjin put Soobin to sleep in his own bed after giving him some medicine. The kid hugged him tightly when he woke up for a few moments and said that being in Yoongi’s place was fun.
He fell asleep really fast right after.
Jin left the room with the door open and got back to the living room where Yoongi was still waiting for him.
“Hyung, I’m sorry.” He started in a low voice so they wouldn’t disturb Soobin’s rest. “You didn’t tell me you were going home with someone and I didn’t even think about it. It’s been ages since the last time I’ve seen you kiss anyone and-“
“Yoongi, that’s fine. Soobin needed me. That’s fine.”
“I could’ve handled it but I didn’t have any medicine for kids at home and I thought that you’d be alone in here and I thought that if you were asleep, I could easily give him some medicine and put him to sleep and wait for you to wake up. I didn’t know-“
“Yoongi!” Jin stopped him.” “It’s fine.”
The younger one retorted: “He left apologizing and I’m pretty sure he thought I was your husband.”
“Well, you did show up without needing to ring the door with a kid in your arms. I don’t blame him for thinking that. I don’t know what came over me, I’m not that kind of guy to have one-night stands… I just thought that it could be nice…”
Seokjin could feel all the lack of sleep getting into him. He tried to party and do things he used to do but he couldn’t slip for a few hours because his reality always followed him with every responsibility.
Seokjin loved Soobin more than anything else, he wouldn’t have his life any other way, but being that young sometimes messed up with his head. His friends were all spending time together, going out, and he liked to do those things when he could but it was not that easy.
“He, uhm, he was handsome.”
That ripped a laugh out of him. “He was, yeah.”
“I’m sorry.”
“Yoongi, if you apologize one more time I’m kicking you out.”
“Did you meet him at the club?”
“He was making drinks.”
“And you decided to flirt with the guy behind the bar instead of finding some random person to dance with.”
“Yes, pretty much it.”
“I sometimes forget that you used to be a flirt.”
Jin shook his head. “That’s a lie and you know it.” He yawned. “Can I ask you to stay and watch over Soobin for a bit? I really need to sleep for a few hours and if he wakes up feeling-“
“I can stay. Of course, I can.” He paused and sat on the couch. “Have some sleep, I’ll be here when you wake up.”
Seokjin smiled gratefully.
Yoongi was the closest thing to a family that Seokjin had.
His best friend stayed when he needed someone to help him the most and even though they were both really young, Yoongi treated Soobin as a nephew and helped with almost everything.
Seokjin, for sure, would be lost if it weren’t for him.
“I’m so stupid.” Jungkook stopped by Jimin’s side. The shop was slow and there were no new clients at that moment.
Jungkook spent the prior day feeling like shit for possibly ruining a marriage and traumatizing a kid but, at that moment, he was working and, gladly, with his best friend, who didn’t have time for him before because he was working and having classes.
“Stop it or I’ll drop this hot milk all over your pants.” Jimin threatened and Jungkook rolled his eyes. “It’s not the first time you met a douchebag.”
“He was married! He had a child and was in a club, hitting on me! What kind of person does that?! I’m so stupid.” He repeated and Jimin pretended he would turn the milk over Jungkook, who (finally) laughed a little.
“I thought he was nice as well. Every time he was here ordering coffee he was super polite and clearly interested in you.”
“I know, right?” He sighed. “And I was doing my best last night. I was the one starting the conversation, being the bold one. It took a lot from me to act like that.”
“We can hit up some other club next weekend or on our next break so you can hook up with someone else and forget all about this.” Jimin finished the drink he was making. “Now, go, the cashier is empty.”
“What if I ruined a family?”
“You didn’t. If anyone did it, it was Seokjin-ssi, not you.” Jimin reasoned. Jungkook knew he was right.
“Now, enough about me. Tell me about the guy you’re seeing. The one who popped up in your dance class to see their friend.”
“I’m not seeing him. We’re talking and he’s nice… But I don’t think he realized I’m flirting with him.”
“Impossible. You’re a tease.”
Jimin laughed and hit his arm lightly. “Go back to the cashier, please. You’re distracting me.”
Jungkook exaggerated his reaction and went back to the front of the shop.
Usually, the afternoons were slow until the time people started leaving the office.
As soon as people started coming, Jungkook spotted who he didn’t want to see at all.
The husband got inside the shop, visibly shy and with wandering eyes.
“Jimin?” Jungkook called him urgently.
“Yes?”
“Can you take over for a second?”
“What? Why? Right now?” He was in the middle of making drinks and he looked at Jungkook, genuinely worried.
“Please? I can make the drinks, I just- His fucking husband is here. He never came here! Is he looking for me?“ Jimin followed his eyes and saw Yoongi, the guy he’s been crushing on, and two other guys. Regular customers. Jimin frowned.
“Yoongi is here.” He said and, and this time, Jungkook was the one confused.
He never saw Yoongi; his instagram profile - really low profile - didn’t have a clear picture for gossip and Jimin didn’t have any picture of him yet.
“Yoongi? The guy you’re talking to? Where?”
“Yes.” He answered and quickly went to the cashier by Jungkook’s side. Jungkook saw the husband coming over but he was curious, he wanted to see Yoongi and it took him a second to decide what to do.
“Hey, Yoongi!” Jimin said.
And Jungkook could swear he took crazy pills because the husband waved at them, at Jimin.
Yoongi and the husband were the same person.
“What?” He tried to understand and the girl with five colours in her hair in the line to order some coffee was getting impatient.
He was so confused, so anxious and so nervous. The husband, Yoongi, was the next customer. Jimin was smiling from ear to ear.
Was he fucking with his friends’ feelings?
Were they in an open relationship?
Jungkook’s mind was overworking.
“Yoongi, hi!“ Jimin exclaimed and Jungkook realized no one was making drinks, the girl with the colorful hair was probably hating them at that moment but Jungkook couldn’t move. His face got on fire and he couldn’t stare at the guy. “I didn’t think you’d actually show up.” Jimin said and smiled gently.
“Oh, God.” Jungkook let out before Yoongi could say anything and Yoongi’s eyes shifted for the first time and he finally recognized Jungkook.
“Wait. Do I know you?!” He said and Jungkook quickly bowed. A perfect 90-degree bow.
“I’m sorry!” He apologized. The only action his body remembered how to do and the only thing he could say. He hated being in that situation. Jimin looked at him, confused. “I swear I didn’t know he had a partner, boyfriend… He didn’t tell me! I’m deeply sorry.”
“Jungkook-ah, what are you doing?” Jimin asked in a low tone. His voice already got the attention of a few customers and the girl waiting for her drink seemed amused and curious.
At least, she was not mad.
“I should go make the drinks.” He said.
Yoongi took his time to understand, but stopped Jungkook from walking away. “What are you talking about?”
“I didn’t mean to ruin your marriage but, well, you’re not so faithful yourself if you’re here flirting with Jimin-“
“Jungkook!” Jimin warned him. The line behind Yoongi was growing and some people were genuinely invested in watching them.
Jungkook hated everything about that day.
“Are you married?” Jimin asked, trying to understand. Trying to make sense out of Jungkook’s words. And his voice shook a bit, he didn’t want to find out the guy he was interested in was with someone else. Maybe that would explain why he didn’t realize that Jimin was openly flirting with him whenever they saw each other.
Yoongi frowned, blinked a few times, looked around and then looked right at Jungkook, who was still standing there.
…And Yoongi cackled, loudly. He genuinely couldn’t help himself from the wave of laughter.
“You’re the guy Seokjin took home!” He said and Jungkook was watching him with fearful eyes and confused frown. Why the hell was he laughing about it? “I’m not his boyfriend. I’m not his partner. I’m not his husband. I’m only his best friend. You can chill!”
And a wave of relief came over Jungkook. But it felt like ice cold water on his face.
“But you- The child.”
“Oh, he’s the guy who interrupted you and Seokjin?” Jimin asked. “Wait. Do you know Seokjin-ssi?” Jimin looked at Yoongi.
“We've been friends for 15 years. We basically grew up together.” He paused and looked at Jungkook once again. “I’m the one sorry for interrupting you guys but hyung didn’t say he was taking anyone home and Soobin had a fever…” Yoongi was saying words and Jungkook was no longer listening. He was really overwhelmed.
He really should get back to work.
“I need to make the drinks.”
“No need to rush!” The girl interrupted Jungkook and he looked around. A lot of people were staring. He was feeling terrible, not really keen on being the center of attention that much.
Yoongi stopped talking and his eyes shifted to worry.
“Jungkookie, are you ok?” Jimin asked in a whisper and he shook his head.
“I’ll make the drinks.” He repeated. This time, Jimin let him.
People stopped staring slowly, getting back to their own lives and Jungkook left the girl’s drink over the counter so Jimin could give it to her.
It took a moment, a few orders, until Jimin stopped by his side:
“Are you good?”
“I’m so embarrassed.”
“What for? I talked to Yoongi and he explained. The guy you like is not married! You still got a shot.”
“I ran away from his house after accusing him of being a cheater. I made a scene here trying to apologize to a guy who was not his husband and I was talking loud enough for the customers to feel the need to stare right at me.” He sighed. “I’m embarrassed.”
Jimin could understand that. “Yoongi is sitting at one of the tables; I think you should talk to him.” He paused. “He wants to talk to you.”
“I’m sorry, Jungkook-ssi, I think I threw too much information at you just now.”
“You did, yes.”
“Sorry.” He smiled, sheepishly. Jungkook looked beyond his shoulder and Jimin was watching them from the counter.
“So… You’re not married.” Jungkook started. Yoongi shook his head.
“Nope. I’m actually trying to ask your friend on a date.”
“He’ll say yes in a heartbeat.” Jungkook stated. “You took a weight off my shoulders. I thought I had ruined a family. Cried a lot, felt guilty a lot, and got angry at Seokjin…”
Yoongi laughed. “Sorry. I- We have the key to each other’s places for emergencies and, well, Soobin had a fever. I had no medicine at home and needed help. He texted me early in the night that he was going home. I thought he was alone.
“Who is Soobin? The kid?” He asked and Yoongi blinked a few times.
“Oh. He didn’t mention- Soobin is his son.” He explained, carefully, that it was not his story to tell and Jungkook could say Yoongi respected his friend a lot.
“Oh.” He paused. “Oh.”
“I’m not answering any more questions. I think you should text him or something. It was just a big misunderstanding and I don’t want to be in the middle of the possibility of you guys hooking up.”
“Oh, we won’t-“ Jungkook shook his hands. He didn’t know if he would ever talk to Seokjin again so hooking up with him was a bit far off.
“Jungkook-ah!” Jimin called him. “Sorry, hyung, I need Jungkook to get back in here.”
“Give me your phone.”
“What?” He asked but gave it anyway.
Yoongi typed a number. “Seokjin’s number if you feel like texting him.” He tilted his head. “I think you should.” It took him a second for Jungkook to move and get the phone back, Yoongi already shaking it so he could grab it. “Don’t make me regret giving his number to you.”
Jungkook only bowed lightly, not being able to say anything.
“Are you going to text him?” Jimin asked when Jungkook stared at his phone way too long after they ended their shift. Jimin was putting on his jacket while texting something quickly to someone.
“I don’t know.”
“I can’t believe you thought that Yoongi was married to the guy.” He huffed.
“I told you how things unfolded. I couldn’t think of any other reason for him to show up with a kid in his arms at that hour-“ Jungkook explained and Jimin smiled at him.
“You should text him. What can go wrong? You said that he was a pretty cool guy. If you decide you don’t want to hook up or date him, we can always add a new friend to our group.”
Jungkook chuckled. “You’re only saying that because he’s friends with Yoongi and you are trying your hardest to keep Yoongi around.”
“It would help, of course. But, genuinely, I’m telling you this because I think you should do it.”
“I don’t know, hyung.”
Jungkook went home and got to his tiny apartment, checking the calendar on the wall to know when would be his next night shift at the club.
He spent the day overthinking about a handsome guy but whenever he got back home he was reminded of his current situation: living in a really small apartment with bills to pay and having to also save money so he could, maybe, buy a nice camera and its lenses so he could start taking pictures and making nice videos with it.
He always had an artistic eye but he never had the money to buy equipment so he promised he would do his best to buy all he needed (and also a good laptop) to start doing what he wanted to do.
But things weren’t that easy.
He also spent a crazy amount of money helping his grandfather.
Jungkook didn’t have parents; never met them. He was raised by his grandparents and he wanted them to have everything they needed so he helped a lot financially, especially now that they could no longer work due to their age and some health situations.
Thankfully the small space was organized; Jungkook was not a messy person at all and all the cleanliness made up for the lack of space.
Just before going to bed, he put his phone on the charger and wondered if he should text Seokjin.
He was curious and he wanted to, but there was too much involved and he didn’t know if Seokjin would want to talk to him.
Also, the guy had a son and Jungkook didn’t know if he was ready to hook up with a dad, nor even start going on dates with a guy who was that responsible.
He decided against it. He wouldn’t talk to Seokjin and let things go any further.
Two hours later, though, he changed his mind.
He is not that diligent about his own decisions anyway.
jungkook
Hey, Seokjin-ssi?
jin
Who are you?
jungkook
Jungkook, from the club. From the coffee place.
jin
Jungkook.
jungkook
Shit. Do you know any other Jungkooks?
I’ll send you a selfie
[pic]
jin
Thank you.
I don’t know any other Jungkook from the coffee place and the club but the selfie was cute.
Hey Jungkook. What’s up?
Thought you might hate me so I didn’t go over for coffee today.
jungkook
I don’t hate you.
I was extremely confused.
But your husband stopped by the coffee and told me everything.
jin
My husband?
jungkook
The small one. Yoongi.
jin
Did you really think he was my husband?
jungkook
Well, can you blame me? You were alone in a bar looking like the best person there.
A guy enters without knocking in your place with a kid sleeping on his arms.
jin
Fair enough.
He’s not my husband. We’re friends.
jungkook
Yes, he told me that.
And he told me you have a son.
jin
Yes.
jungkook
Oh.
jin
Oh?
jungkook
I don’t know what to say to that. I never had a friend that had a kid before.
jin
Oh, yeah, forgot you’re a baby yourself.
jungkook
I’m not a baby 😡
jin
Look, Jungkook, it’s late and I like talking to you and all but you vanished the other day and I’m feeling you’re about to vanish again, so, yeah, I have a son. I’m not married. Why did you text me?
jungkook
To talk? To ask you out to talk a bit more?
jin
Talk?
jungkook
Yes
jin
Yes. I could talk. I like the idea. I like spending time with you. I’m sorry about what happened. I didn’t know Yoongi would stop by and, well, my son is my top priority, so of course I would drop anyone or anything to rush to him.
jungkook
I can understand that. You’re a good dad. That’s great. So when can we go out?
jin
Do you want to go out with me?
jungkook
Yes?
jin
Oh, right. Saturday? My friends, those who were at the club with me, will take Soobin on a shopping spree.
jungkook
Fancy.
jin
Not that much; they’re going to buy toys and they told him he could choose three. He’s ecstatic.
jungkook
I would be too if someone promised to pay for three things I like on a random Saturday.
jin
I can buy you coffee, a cake, and an ice cream on Saturday.
jungkook
A man after my heart, I see it.
Well, so Saturday it is. I don’t have any day shifts on the weekend, so we’re good.
jin
Great. We can talk and decide where we’re going later.
jungkook
Ok!
jin
Jungkook, I’m glad you texted.
jungkook
Me too! Good night, hyung.
Seokjin couldn’t believe his eyes.
He had a date with Jungkook and he agreed to it after knowing he had a son; Seokjin didn’t expect that at all.
Especially because of the way things went between them a few days ago and because it’s been a huge while since the last time he went on a date.
He was about to go to sleep; his routine was a bit exhausting even though he stayed at home most of the time and he always craved for the hours offline; for the moments where he wouldn’t have to answer his phone or think too much about media and screen time. The moments he could actually spend having fun with Soobin.
When Saturday came, Seokjin thought about canceling it.
“You’re not canceling!” Taehyung said while searching, again, for nice clothes in Seokjin's closet.
Soobin was watching everything and even helping Taehyung choose. Namjoon and Hoseok were also in the room but only for moral and emotional support.
Yoongi was also at his place, but talking on the phone, with Jimin, in the living room. They were also going on a date that weekend.
“Tae, this doesn’t make any sense. I have no idea what I should do on a date.”
“You’re better than you realize! Tell him, Namjoon.”
Namjoon was about to say something when Soobin said:
“Are you going to meet your boyfriend?” His voice was excited, and he was clearly having a lot of fun imagining things - and Soobin always loved how Taehyung dealt with things. How he put a lot of energy into whatever he was doing.
“He’s not my boyfriend. We’re friends. Just like I’m friends with Namjoon, with Yoongi…”
“I’m not his friend like that.” Yoongi showed up at the door. “Come on, choose an outfit already.”
“Dad needs to get pretty.” Soobin added and Seokjin smiled at him. His son was adorable.
“I thought I was always pretty. Did you lie to me?”
“No! Dad, you’re always pretty! I don’t lie!”
They joked around for a few minutes and Soobin loved being around his uncles because they spoiled him a lot, so when he said he wanted some cookies, Hoseok took him to the kitchen in search of a pack of them.
“Talk to me.” Namjoon said; Seokjin looked around and Yoongi was also watching while Taehyung was still searching for a nice shirt for him to wear.
“I’m nervous. I don’t even know if it’s going to go well. We just texted, quickly, and then we decided on the place.”
“That’s good, though.”
“Is it?” He paused. “Am I being irresponsible? Leaving Soobin under your care just because-“
“Hyung! We’ve been over this once. You’re a single dad; We’re here for you. It’s not irresponsible to want something for yourself especially because we’re here to help. You deserve to have fun and Soobinie will also have lots of fun.” He answered quickly. “Everything will be fine.”
Seokjin nodded at him, trying to make those words sink down, and then nodded at Taehyung’s choices of clothes.
Seokjin was not usually this insecure but it was like going on a first date all over again.
“Thank you.” He said, simply. Namjoon hugged him. A habit he acquired after dating Taehyung. Seokjin liked it a lot.
“And Jungkook is nice. He’s really sweet, and it will all go well. You’ll see. You have nothing to worry about.”
Jungkook was indeed super nice and all but Jin knew all about that already due to all the times he went to the coffee place and talked to him and due to the few hours they spent talking together and making out a few days ago.
They were sitting across from each other and Seokjin, as promised (and also as his hyung) paid for his coffee and sweets.
Jungkook was no longer the bold guy Seokjin remembered from the club; he was shy at that moment.
“Am I making you uncomfortable?” Jin asked, a bit nervous still. He didn’t know how to act on a date; it’s been too long and it felt like they were awkward near each other.
“What?”
“You look uncomfortable.” He pointed out and Jungkook adjusted his posture, a small smile blooming on his face. He shook his head.
“I’m ok. I’m not uncomfortable. Really. I don’t have that much experience with dates, that’s all.”
Seokjin didn’t believe that at all.
“We have that in common.”
“I don’t believe you.” Jungkook said and took another sip from his coffee. “You have a kid! Of course, you have experience in dating…”
That was not completely true, but Seokjin would not talk about his ex-girlfriend on a first date with a guy he actually likes to be around. He tried hard to think that Jungkook could be a one-night stand but the worst happened: he liked Jungkook. A lot. And for the first time in a really long time, he caught himself wondering if he should get back on dating; if he should maybe try to date Jungkook. “I think we should ask about each other, get to know the other a bit better…” The older one said and Jungkook nodded.
“That’s good. What do you suggest?”
“Tell me about your hobbies.” Jin said and Jungkook smiled, easily answering that:
“I like to draw. I’m a great barista and barman but I’m also great at making art.”
“I’d like to see that.”
“I have some pictures in my phone… Would you like to see some of it?”
“Yes, I would.”
And he genuinely wanted that. He wanted to know more; Seokjin also loved meeting new people (despite being extremely shy in certain situations) and knowing what ticked their heart.
And, by the look Jungkook gave and the easy smile on his face, he could say it was art for him.
They talked for three hours; time flew.
They talked about their hobbies, talked about work, about music, and about Soobin - Jin talked a lot about his son. Jungkook made it clear that he liked hearing those stories.
“You’re a good dad.” He said when Jin told him about Soobin’s last birthday.
“I try my best.”
“How old is he again?”
“Seven.” He answered and Jungkook widened his eyes, counting in silence. Seokjin helped: “I was nineteen when he was born. Yes, long story short, condoms are important and all.”
Jungkook didn’t say anything to that and he was thankful; usually, people laughed when he mentioned that and some of them felt sorry for him.
It was not easy for Seokjin to raise a kid and it was even harder when he was younger, but he was responsible enough to take his role as a father and make everything happen even though he had no idea of what he was doing.
“And where is his mom?”
“Are you genuinely curious or is this your way to make sure I’m single and not cheating on anyone?” Seokjin asked, trying to lighten up the mood and Jungkook leaned back on the chair with a smile.
“Both.”
“She moved to another country… and it’s not like she really cares. She sends money and Christmas cards. We were never really in a relationship.“ He paused. “I promised myself I wouldn’t talk about exes on first dates.”
“This is not our first date. We almost hooked up already.” True. “And it’s important.” Also true. Jin nodded.
A beat of quietness took over their table and Jin didn’t know what to say to break the awkward silence. The first awkward silence in hours of talking.
“I’m sorry. I just- I think it’s a lot to take in.” Jungkook finally said.
“Is it?”
“It kind of is. You were my crush from work and then things escalated pretty quickly on a really big scale. I mean, it was all fun and games, and now I know you have a seven-year-old son.” He paused and he probably saw how Jin had no answer to that. “Should we go get the ice cream you promised me?”
Jin smiled lightly. “Sure.”
But things were not the same. After they got their ice creams, Jungkook got relatively quieter, and he avoided Jin’s eyes quite a lot.
“You always liked to talk, even when I was ordering coffee, and now you’re quiet.” He pointed out and Jungkook looked at him. Jin tried to reach for his hand after he finished eating and was just watching Jungkook but the younger one retrieved his in a heartbeat, startling both of them.
Jin knew when he was being rejected and that was one of those moments. He tried to display a tiny smile to reassure him that it was alright; dates were like this, after all. Getting to know the other person and making sure you’d like to keep going out with them. Clearly, Jungkook didn’t want that.
“S-sorry.” Jungkook said and took another bite of his ice cream, buying time.
“You don’t have to explain yourself.”
“But I want to.” He paused again. Jin put his hands inside his pockets. “I like you. You’re nice, handsome, a really great kisser and I really want to hook up with you but…”
“But?”
“But you’re on another level of responsibility, hyung.” He paused. “I can’t come into your life and think things are going to be easy because being with you comes with meeting your son and,” Jin widened his eyes, curious about where that was going. “Hear me out first, please. I just… want something easy and flirty and that could be bloomed into something more or not. But if I do this with you, I’ll get in the way of your family. I’ll probably meet your son and if things go wrong; he will get confused and I’m not sure I want this kind of pressure already. I’m too young to have to think about this stuff-“
“I get it.” Seokjin interrupted him so he could please stop talking. “But I must say you’re overthinking.”
“Am I?”
“It’s not like you’re going to be a stepdad tomorrow. He doesn’t need that. I’m his father.” He took a deep breath. “I get it, it looks serious, but we could start slowly, going on dates and after a while you could meet him. Things don’t have to be that complicated. You’re overthinking.”
Jungkook stared at him, probably considering his words but Jin didn’t say them to make him change his mind, he just said that so he could realize that just because he had a son it didn’t mean he was trying to find someone to marry. He could have fun and date, and have boyfriends and girlfriends. Of course, the dynamic would be different and Jin’s priority would always be his son.
“I’m sorry. I get your point, and I really would love to keep things going with you but I’m not ready for this. I have too much on my plate right now. I need it easy.
Jin didn’t understand how being with him could be the opposite of easy but he must not understand because he was the one with the kid so maybe he was biased in his vision.
“That’s fine, Jungkook.” Jin said, trying not sound sad. It must have worked because the younger one smiled warmly and said:
“We can totally hang out as friends, though?” He bit more of his ice cream (that was already melting). “I really like spending time and talking to you.”
“We can, yes.”
He took Jungkook home and they lingered a bit too long at his doorstep. Jungkook bit his lower lip to stop him from leaning in and kissing Seokjin and the older one probably noticed.
“I should go.” He said and Jungkook nodded, hesitating a bit.
“Text me. Don’t be a stranger.” The younger one said and Jin tilted his head a bit before leaving.
When Jin got home, his friends were there and he was emotionally drained. He usually felt like a nuisance and was not prepared at all when it came to stuff with Soobin. He always feels like he’s messing things up and being a terrible father because it is his first time being a dad and because he has no one to really ask about fatherhood. Usually, he felt like a failure when he failed to make Soobin stop crying when he was younger; or when he forgot to make sure he had a lunchbox for his first day in preschool (believing that the school would give him food)… But it was the first time in a really long time that he felt like maybe he was not enough or, better, too much for a relationship at that moment. Maybe he was just not that good at expressing himself; maybe he was not that good, period.
Being a father made him a bit soft-hearted and he loved it sometimes but, but at that moment, he hated it.
Especially because he shouldn’t be sad about a date going wrong; he had a lot to worry about and none of it was related to another man he barely knew.
And he hated it even more, especially because as soon as he arrived home, all of his friends were sitting on the floor, playing with Soobin and what looked like his new toys.
He didn’t have time to be gloomy.
And, to be fair, it was hard being sad when he could see his son so happy, with a huge smile and shining eyes from laughing too much. Again, his heart was too soft.
Gladly, he was so busy that he forgot all about Jin going to meet a prince (as he called it) and he excitedly showed him all of his new toys (Seven new toys).
“I thought they would buy you three. Why are there so many?”
“I didn’t ask for more!” He was already defending himself. His son was way too smart.
“He liked them and we couldn’t say no.” Namjoon said and Jin, thankfully, said: “Thank you, but you don’t have to go out and use your money to buy him new stuff. You guys have your own stuff going on. I know for a fact that Hobi and Tae are trying to find a business to start.”
“It was not a problem.” Namjoon assured.
“Did you thank them?”
“He did.” Taehyung smiled fondly.
“I did!” Jin was now sitting by his son’s side on the floor and holding one of the toys, a dinosaur plushie.
His friends studied him carefully, trying to understand what went on his date but he would not have this conversation at that moment.
“Are you alright?” Hoseok asked instead.
“Fine. Just tired. I need some sleep.”
“Mhm. We can leave if you want to.” He added and Jin shook his head. “No, you’re not a problem. I like having friends around.”
“Samcheon, please, pay attention!” Soobin exclaimed to Taehyung who, again, laughed and shifted around so he could tickle Soobin and make him laugh even harder.
Seokjin looked around, and while his son was having a fit of giggles, he asked. “And Yoongi? Where is he?”
“I think his date went well. He wasn’t supposed to meet Jimin today but they made it work. He’s really… infatuated.”
“It’s so crazy. I didn’t know they knew each other.” Seokjin pointed out. Namjoon nodded.
“It’s pretty recent, yes.”
Soobin was breathing hard, and Taehyung was now holding him gently. Both of them had big smiles on their faces.
“Tell me more about your day. What did you do?” And that was what Soobin needed to vent all about his day.
Soobin was a really energetic kid but he always slept right on time. He started feeling sleepy and Jin knew it was time to tuck him into bed.
The clock hit 8 pm and as soon as he got back in the living room, he was well aware his friends would question him, ask everything about the date.
“Do you want to talk about it?” Namjoon asked as soon as he stepped foot in the living room, sitting back on the floor where his friends were still comfortable and near Soobin’s organized toys.
Seokjin shrugged. “There’s nothing to tell.”
“I thought you would get home at least an hour later. It was quick.”
“We spent a really nice evening together but I’m not what he’s looking for.” He said and shifted his gaze away from his friends who were frowning.
“What? Hyung, what happened? Was it that bad?”
“Not really. Jungkook is really nice. He’s curious, kind, funny, and a great listener… But we talked and talked and it was good but he’s not looking for someone like me at that moment.”
That clearly sounded absurd, given their friends’ reactions.
“Did he say that?”
“And who is it that he’s looking for?”
Seokjin chuckled with not much humor in his voice. “Someone that isn’t a dad, maybe.”
Hoseok and Namjoon’s postures deflated; they were ready to fight but they got into comfort mode pretty quickly. “It's fine, really. As he said, it’s a lot to take in and he’s young. I get it not wanting to be involved in an already formed family. It is too much to ask anyone.”
“He’s wrong. You just want to date him and maybe see where it goes.”
“Turns out, he knows what he wants and even though he has a huge crush on me, he won’t let us have this moment because I’m in another level of responsibility.” He made the air quotes with his fingers. “I’m fine. I guess. It’s just a bummer. It’s been a while and I overcame a lot to even go there today; I thought that, since he already knew about me having a kid, that meant he was ok with it.”
“I’m sorry, hyung, but he’s not the last person on Earth. You have lots of people trying to date you, I know for a fact that all the moms in Soobin’s school are crazy for you.” Hoseok pointed out, trying to lighten up the mood; which Seokjin was really grateful for.
“Thank you, but it’s ok. I just thought that maybe it would work out and maybe I should give romance another chance, but clearly that was not the best idea.”
“I know Jungkookie and I know he’s really sweet. I’m surprised.”
“He is nice and sweet. He even asked me to remain friends and said that he was just not ready to be that involved with anything. It was ok; the date was fine and he even asked about Soobin and laughed a few times, but then he asked about his mom and I think he started realizing that maybe it was too hard? I don’t know. I can’t speak for him but, yeah, it didn't work. It’s fine.”
Taehyung got closer and engulfed him in a really nice and comfy hug.
“You guys don’t have to look at me like that. I’m a grown-ass man, a dad. I think I had my fair share of hard days and this is not a problematic one.”
“You don’t have to be strong all the time, hyung.”
“I expected it. I really did. But being rejected always messes with our confidence.”
“I know. I’m sorry.” Taehyung and his boyfriends watched all the interaction fondly.
“Thank you.”
It took him a few days to adjust but he was going well. Sadly, he no longer went to the best coffee place in town because he was doing his best to avoid Jungkook. Not because of anything in particular but just because he thought that maybe he would be uncomfortable and also Jungkook would be uncomfortable.
And he didn’t want to have to deal with it. Whenever he needed to take a break, he went on a 35-minute walk to another coffee place that he kind of liked.
On weekdays, Soobin was at school from early in the morning until late in the afternoon so he had time to vent out of the games he was testing and appreciate silence and real things.
Yoongi started dating Jimin and Seokjin saw the blonde cute guy a few times when they were having a movie night or whenever Yoongi felt like bringing his boyfriend along to hangouts. The trio loved him and Jin did too. Jimin was super funny and kind and he really liked Yoongi, which was what Jin wanted the most. His best friend deserved a lot of love.
It felt like destiny because at that same moment, his phone buzzed and it was Yoongi.
“Hey, Yoongi.”
“Hyung, you’ll kill me. And I’m sorry!”
“What is going on?” He had no reason to want to kill Yoongi yet and Soobin was still at school so he knew it had nothing to do with maybe dying a strip of his hair blue - like he did once.
“I forgot that I was supposed to watch over Soobin this Friday. I know I promised you but I forgot! It slipped from my mind and I now have plans with Jimin.”
“Hey, that’s fine. It’s ok. Really. Don’t worry.” It really was not a problem. Yoongi always tried to watch over Soobin once a week so Jin could rest. He never asked for it; Yoongi just did. So it was ok. He had nowhere to go, after all.
“Aren’t you going out?”
“When was the last time I went out? I don’t even remember.” He did. It was when he kissed Jungkook. “I swear, it’s fine. Go have fun with your boyfriend.”
“Maybe we could do something together.”
“No, thank you. I don’t want to be the third wheel and I won’t expose my son’s eyes to you and Jimin making out on my couch.”
“We won’t-“
“Yoongi, it’s ok.”
A sigh. “Alright. If you say so. I’m sorry anyway.” He paused. “You know, Jimin’s birthday is coming up and he wanted to invite you and the guys. It’s a small party but it’ll be nice.”
“Can Soobinie come?”
“Of course.”
“Then we’ll go. When is it?”
“Actually, this Saturday.”
“Oh. Wow. Alright.”
“Yes, uhm, Jungkook will probably be there.”
Jin nodded at that, even though Yoongi couldn’t see him.
“I figured. They’re best friends.”
“You didn’t tell me exactly what went on between the two of you; I just know those small details you let out. I hope you can still go; Jimin likes you a lot.”
“I’ll try. I promise.”
He wasn’t sure and he didn’t know if he should show up after ignoring Jungkook’s tons of messages.
Spending his free time at night and on weekends with Soobin, helping him do his homework and just having fun was the best. Seokjin, most of the time, thought he was helpless and a terrible dad, but in times like these, he felt like the best father in the world. He clearly had a talent with kids and he already learned a lot in the past seven years so he, sometimes, felt proud of how far he’d come.
His friends always reminded him about how great he was but seeing his son looking at him with so much adoration and happiness held all the reassurance he needed.
“You’re looking pretty.” Soobin said after Seokjin put some glitter on his eyes; he wasn’t big on wearing heavy makeup because he usually would smudge it without even realizing it, but he loved putting a pop of color to give his cheeks a lively feeling and glitter to mark his eyes.
“Can I put some glitter too?” He asked and so Jin did. Soobin was way too excited about this party and all because Jimin had mentioned that another couple of friends, who also had a son, would bring him along and Soobin would have someone to play with, if he wanted to.
Jin was not the best when it came to his son meeting new people; he was way too guarded, not wanting Soobin to get attached to someone that might leave but he always reminded himself that maybe he was the one afraid of it.
The party was nice and Yoongi was right, Jimin was a ray of sunshine. Hoseok and his boyfriends were also there. Namjoon was way too busy sitting near the kids, Soobin and Park Hyungsik’s son, Yeonjun. Gladly, they got along just fine and were acting like long time friends.
Jin was watching them from afar.
“I’m glad you made it.” Yoongi said, Jimin by his side. They were parading around the party making sure to talk to everyone. Jimin was smiling widely.
“Hyung talks wonders about you and I know we see each other every other time but I’m glad to have you here with more time to talk.” The blond said. “Soobin is adorable. I’m glad you brought him as well.” Jin nodded.
“He likes you a lot.” He paused. “You too.” He said to Yoongi, quickly shifting his attention back to Jimin. “Happy birthday.”
Jimin blushed a bit and thanked him. “I feel like I’m meeting my boyfriend’s older brother or something. I really want you to like me.” He confessed and Jin and Yoongi laughed loudly at it.
“What are you talking about? I already like you and it’s important that Yoongi likes you-“
“I know but you and Soobinie are a really huge part of hyung’s life and I want to be part of it as well.”
Jin looked at Yoongi who was smiling dumbly at his boyfriend; they were both really in love. It was cute to watch.
“I think you’re great. There. If you want my approval of something, you have it. Just take care of him. Yoongi pretends to be fine when he’s not and he’s really good at acting. I’d say that he could easily go to the casting agency for sky castle or something.”
“Shut up.” He said and Jimin placed a kiss on his lips.
“And, uhm, I know you and Jungkookie are not on good terms but I, of course, invited him. He might show up at any moment. I hope it’s not a problem, especially because I quite like you and that could shift in seconds if you dislike or disrespect him.”
“Minie..”
“I’m sorry, hyung, but I mean it.” He apologized to his boyfriend and got back to looking at Jin.
“You have nothing to worry about. I haven’t talked to Jungkook in a few months; I stopped going to the coffee place because I thought he would be uncomfortable or something. I have nothing against him, I mean it. It’s fine. We’re just… Not talking? We never really did, to be fair.”
“I’m sure he misses you going there every day but don’t tell him I told you that.”
“Minie..” Yoongi alerted once again and Jin didn’t want to keep talking about it anymore.
Taehyung noticed he wanted out of that conversation and quickly hugged him from behind and interrupted the talk. “Let’s play with the kids. You’re great at entertaining them.”
“That’s because I’m a dad. We learn a thing or two about kids.” He answered and excused himself so he could go to the corner of the living room.
“Thank you.” He said to Taehyung who let out a knowing smile.
“You looked uncomfortable.”
“Jimin was saying that he liked me but that if I have something against Jungkook, that he wouldn’t like me that much anymore.”
“Sounds reasonable. I wouldn’t like someone that makes a friend of mine sad or something. For example, I’m not sure if I like Jungkook that much anymore. He made you sad.”
“Jungkook and I, we haven’t even talked in the past months. He texted a few times but I ignored, obviously. He rejected me, maybe he was just trying to be nice after that because Jimin and Yoongi started dating.”
“Jungkook is not like that and you know it.” He paused. “I told you he’s nice. You know it yourself.”
“I do, but, well, what can I do?” He paused. “There was nothing for us to talk about and I was disappointed by the whole situation. I don’t want him to talk to me because he pities me for rejecting me or something.”
“That also sounds reasonable.”
“You’re a good therapist, you know that?” Taehyung laughed.
“The best, hyung, I’m the best!” He answered and Jin had to agree. Taehyung was a great listener.
“Appa, come here!” Soobin called him and he sat by Namjoon’s side; they were playing with some random figurines and Yeonjun was really careful. Whenever Soobin made a big movement or was about to hurt himself, Yeonjun made sure to help him. Adorable.
Hoseok was holding a glass of wine and placing kisses on Taehyung’s face while Namjoon looked at them lovingly. Jin snorted.
“You’re hopeless.”
“What?”
“You’re so in love with them, it’s annoying to watch.” He said and helped Soobin fix one of the dolls, the one he took the head off without really meaning it.
“I am.” Namjoon confirmed and Jin smiled. “I really am. Who would’ve thought? I didn’t even think I was capable of loving someone…”
“I’m happy about how things unfolded between you guys. It was painful to watch how oblivious Hoseok was.”
Namjoon laughed again. “It was.” He looked at Yeonjun who was quietly watching Soobin try to put an armor in one of the figurines. “I think Soobin made a new friend. They’re glued to each other.”
“That’s nice. I need to grab his father’s number or something and organize some playdates. Sometimes I think Soobin is around too many adults; he should have more friends.”
“He likes being with you.”
“I know and I love that but he needs to be more sociable. His teacher said he’s really shy sometimes, that his mood changes constantly.”
“He’s a great kid, hyung.” Namjoon said and Jin smiled at that.
Namjoon got back to the party and Jin was the only adult in the kids’ area, looking over them.
Soobin and Yeonjun got tired and both of them were now playing something with Pokémon in it.
“Hey. You must be Soobin’s dad.”
“I am.”
“I’m Yeonjun’s father. They got along pretty quickly. Yeonjun is outgoing and all but I’ve never seen him click with someone this fast.”
“Soobinie is good at making friends. I could learn a thing or two from him.”
“I know how it is.” A pause and a smile. “I can stay here for a while. You can take a break.”
“Are you sure? It’s not a hassle for me. I like spending time with them.”
“Yes, I’m sure. You can come back whenever you feel like it. I’m here if you want to talk more.” The guy said and sat by Yeonjun’s side.
“I won’t take long. I just need something to eat or drink.”
“Take your time.” He smiled and Jin blinked a few times, wondering if Park Hyungsik wanted to talk more or if he was just being polite by saying that he could come back to talk.
Seokjin was too absorbed in his own thoughts to realize that Jungkook was the guy standing up in front of the kitchen.
“Seokjin-hyung, hi.”
The older one stopped in his tracks.
“Hi.”
They stared at each other for a few seconds but Jungkook was the one who shifted his gaze before saying: “I should see if hyung needs something.”
“Jungkook-“
“Yes?”
“It’s good to see you.”
Jungkook snickered. “You don’t have to lie.” A pause. “I’m a grown man, I know when I’m ghosted.”
“I’m not lying. I really am glad to see you.”
“Right.” Jungkook thought about leaving that conversation right at that moment but he didn’t. He sighed. “I can understand that we didn’t get to start anything between us and that was a deal breaker for you. I really meant it when I said we could be friends but after the nth unread and unreplied texts, I think I realized that you didn’t want that. I’m sorry for trying to reach out and I won’t be in your way.”
“Jungkook, I-“
“Save it, hyung.” And just like that he vanished away, going after Jimin or someone else and leaving Jin utterly surprised at that door.
Seokjin saw hurt in Jungkook’s eyes and it was never his intention to hurt him or to make him sad. He just thought he was doing the right thing; he thought that he only said that they could be friends so the night wouldn’t end awkward. Seokjin wasn’t good at reading situations like that, he never did.
After a few time, he thought about leaving but Jimin would still cut the cake and he decided he would wait for it. He liked Jimin and he knew it was important for Yoongi.
Again, as usual, he got back to playing with the children. Soobin and Yeonjun were getting tired, they were less talkative now and Seokjin had already made sure that Jimin had an empty room he could use if the kids decided to sleep.
Hyungsik went after some snacks for them and Jin was happy to see another single father there. It made him feel seen and made him feel like he belonged. He was the only one in his several friend groups that had a kid so it was good to meet someone else who understood what it was like to be a father.
He was collecting some of the paper cars Soobin left under his shoe when someone approached them.
“Do you want me to watch them for a while?”
It was Jungkook. His big doe eyes stared down at Seokjin. “I’m good with kids.”
Seokjin blinked a few times. He thought Jungkook would not talk to him after what he said in the kitchen. Soobin and Yeonjun were way too invested in their toys to realize Jungkook was standing there; they only noticed when Jungkook sat right in front of Jin, where Hyungsik was.
“You don’t have to-“
“I can stay here for a while. I need a break, and maybe playing with paper cars would be it for me right now.”
Jin chuckled a bit. “I appreciate it but I’m good, really.” A pause. “Yeonjun’s dad went after some snacks for them. It’s not like I can’t keep an eye on them from afar; the apartment is not that big, but I enjoy being with them. I’m not that social with people I don’t know and- sorry, I’m talking too much.”
Jungkook didn’t have a second to answer because Hyungsik showed up carrying small bowls with snacks and some candy. “Did I take too long?” He asked and Jin shook his head.
“Kids, come say hi to Jungkook.”
Jungkook widened his eyes, his cheeks getting bright pink when the small ones looked at him with curiosity.
“Hi. I’m Soobin.”
“I’m Yeonjun.”
“They just met and are glued to each other.” Hyungsik said and Jungkook looked at him once again. “I’m Park Hyungsik. We’ve seen each other a few times but I don’t think we were properly introduced.”
Jungkook smiled at them and introduced himself as well. “I’m Jungkook, Jin’s friend, it’s nice to meet you.”
“Are you guys hungry?”
And just like that, Hyungsik made sure they got the snacks he brought and the three of them got really busy with it.
“Look, you don’t have to stay here. I’m sure you’d like to spend your time with someone else.” Jungkook frowned.
“I just thought I could help out-“
“Look, I-“ He paused. “I’m not good with this. I’m sorry. I’m sorry about not texting you back, I’m sorry for saying the wrong thing- I’m sorry. When we met, I liked you and then we had all those misunderstandings… When you asked me out after knowing I had a son, I thought things were going to go differently but it ended the way it did and the end of the date was weird and quiet. I thought you hated it and when you said we should be friends, I thought you were just saying something so we could part ways without making a fuss about the rejection. I didn’t know you really meant it, so I decided I should give you some space so I stopped going to the coffee place and left some unread messages on the way. I’m sorry.”
“I meant it. I want to be your friend. I miss your weird coffee order and your jokes.” Jungkook shrugged.
“Asking for honey in the coffee is not weird, Jungkook.” He said and a small smile slipped. “I’m sorry.”
“We can start again.” The youngest tried. “I’m not sure I can trust you right now, maybe you’ll say yes and vanish again but I’m all about second chances.”
“You’re really something.”
“I am, indeed.” A triumphant smile. “Do you want me to bring something to eat?”
Seokjin looked at all the snacks Hyungsik and the kids were eating and he shook his head. “I’m good. He brought a lot.”
Jungkook blinked a few times. “Oh, right.”
A gut feeling caught up to him and he didn’t know exactly what it was.
Jungkook knew Hyungsik; He was friends with Jimin for a long time now and allegedly always the only single dad at their parties.
He liked Hyungsik.
“He’s single.” He whispered and Seokjin took a second to understand what Jungkook was talking about.
“What?”
“Sorry, I thought-“
“You thought that the dads should get together.” A huff. “I’m not looking for someone at the moment and he’s nice, the only one who visibly enjoyed talking to me the whole night and it’s not because we’re both fathers- You know what? Forget it. Thanks for the heads up.” He got offended. He knew that his friends would like to set him up with cool and handsome guys and Hyungsik checked all the boxes.
But hearing that from Jungkook sounded different; as if he was trying to set Jin up with someone because he felt guilty.
“I- I don’t know why I said that. I just thought.”
“Jungkook, you know? I’d really like some soda.”
Jungkook gulped and rushed away in the kitchen’s direction.
Seokjin rolled his eyes.
“He looked smug and then terrified. What did you say to him?”
“He was trying to set me up with you. Clearly, he thinks that the single dads should stick together.”
“Are you single?” Hyungsik asked, surprised.
Jin laughed. “I am, yes. I’m not looking for a relationship, though.“
“Me neither.” Hyungsik was quick to add. "I’m just surprised."
Jin didn’t know if that was good or bad but he didn’t want to dwell on it.
“I think he’s into you.” Hyungsik whispered when Soobin was too busy paying attention to what Yeonjun was saying. “Jungkook.” He explained.
Jin shook his head. “He’s really not.”
The rest of the night was pleasing and Jin had a great time chatting with his friends; Soobin ended up sleeping in one empty room right after they cut the cake. Jimin convinced Jin to spend a bit more time with them.
Jungkook was trying his best to talk casually with Seokjin but he was afraid things were never going to be the same between them. Seokjin thought that Jungkook had labeled him in his mind already and it messed with him a bit.
“Jin-hyung?”
“Huh?”
“Can we talk for a bit?”
Seokjin didn’t want it, not really. “Yes, sure. What is it?”
“I want to apologize. I didn’t mean it that way; I was not trying to say that you and Hyungsik should flirt because you’re both dads. I guess, I just-“ Seokjin waited, eyes staring. “I guess I just wanted to fish for information.”
“How so?”
“You guys spent most of the night together… I guess I was just trying to know if you were interested in him.”
Jin frowned, confused. “Yeah, right. Why?”
“I wanted to know because-“ A pause. Jungkook stopped himself.
The truth was that he got jealous even though he shouldn’t have. But the thought of Jin flirting with someone else made him mad.
“Because?”
“I don’t know.” He said, instead.
“Ok.” Jin sighed. “I may have overlooked it. People always forget that I’m young and also allowed to have fun. They put me in boxes with other dads, don’t ask me to hang out and don’t flirt with me. I’m sorry if I got too defensive. If you want to be my friend, you should know that it ticks me off.”
“Do you still want to be my friend?” Jungkook asked with wide eyes.
“Sure. Why not?”
