My Heart It Beats Just For You

Summary:

Over the many seasons, the Games have evolved into something worse. Grian has tried his best to fight against the Watchers, but no matter what he does, no matter how many times he raises a rebellion, he always fails. And the Watchers are tired of his meddling.

They wipe his memories before the next Games and give him a clear set of instructions, hoping he’ll bend to their will. The most important rule? Stay alone.

But when he meets a certain conniving salesman, he starts to remember. And he can’t pull himself away.

Chapter 1: Prologue

Chapter Text

He wasn’t really sure where he was. All he knew was that he was surrounded by darkness and, more alarmingly, he was falling. He scrambled for something to hold onto, reaching out for something, anything to anchor him, but there was just… nothing.

That’s not going to work, advised a voice he couldn’t place. It sounded so familiar and yet so strange at the same time. He frantically tried to look around but still could only see darkness.

How silly, the voice said. You look like a fish out of water.

“Who are you?” He asked. “What is this place? What happened? Why can’t I remember anything?”

Relax, the voice said. This is a void. You won’t hit the ground anytime soon.

“What’s going on? Who are you?” he asked again, panicking even more. Then something even scarier occurred to him. “Who am I?” The voice laughed.

You’re Grian, it said. That’s important to know. He considered this.

“Grian, huh?” He said shakily. “Ok. Where am I?” There was a pause as the voice considered Grian’s question.

You are in the void. I already told you this. However, the voice continued, you will not be here much longer. Grian began falling faster, a light appearing below him. He shrieked in surprise as the light got closer and closer.

We trust that you can handle yourself, the voice said, as if nothing had changed. But we still want to help you win. There are a few very important things you need to remember.

Grian was falling very fast now. He tried to shout for help but he couldn’t speak.

Keep a large pack of dogs, the voice said. Live in a tower or on top of a mountain– always take the high ground.

Never build with wood. Don’t provoke others. Don’t make enemies. Steal, but only when you know you won’t get caught. Be forgettable.

The light was fast approaching now and Grian’s consciousness was fading.

And most importantly, the voice said finally,

Always

Stay

The light swallowed everything and Grian blacked out.
