Chapter 1: The Night It Happened

Chapter Text

CHAPTER ONE: The Night It Happened

Bridget Spaniel was a normal two-year-old child in her neighborhood. She lived with her parents, her mum was a tutor, and her dad was a doctor. Both of them knew everyone around, and loved Bridget deeply. Bridget loved her parents as much as they did with her. But then, something terrible happened. Something that would change Bridget’s life forever.

It was about seven in the night, and Bridget was in her bed, trying to get to sleep. It had been a long day, and the Cavalier was exhausted. Even if her eyes were closed, she could hear every detail. The wind outside, the tree in the backyard rustling it’s leaves, and the slightest sound of birds chirping in the background. It was a pristine, calm night. Suddenly,

BANG! BANG! BANG!

Bridget was jolted awake. She sat up straight away and covered her ears. There was a loud banging sound coming from downstairs, and she couldn't stand it.the banging continued for at least three more seconds, before stopping, just as suddenly as it started. Bridget had no idea what just happened, so she decided to investigate. She carefully made her way across to her parents’ bedroom, expecting them to be awake thanks to the noise. But to her surprise, her parents weren’t there!

Perhaps they went downstairs too, Bridget thought. So she went downstairs – and was met with chaos almost too great to describe. Shattered glass was everywhere, broken items were all over the place, and amongst it all, were two fallen bodies. It didn't take long for Bridget to realise that these were the two people she most cared about in the whole world.

“There, I’m done,” said Reese, closing her work at last. Reese was one of Bridget‘s neighbours, a university student at the University of Queensland. She had been given an assignment to do during the weekend and had finally finished it. But then,

BANG! BANG! BANG!

The same sound came, startling her.

“ What in the world?!” She yelled, shocked. She listened carefully. It sounded like the sound was coming from next door. She then realized, those weren't bangs.

Those were gunshots.

Just as suddenly as it started, the gunshots stopped, leaving the neighbourhood in silence. Reese had no idea what just happened, but she sprang into action. Wasting no time, she closed her laptop and rushed outside. She was concerned about the Spaniels, mainly Bridget. She was only two.

“Hey Reese!” Came a voice from behind. “ Where are you going?”

Reese looked behind her. The voice belonged to Adam, another one of Bridget’s neighbours, and one of Reese‘s professors.

“ Hey Professor Wellington,” Reese replied, “I heard gunshots from the Spaniels’ home. I'm going to see-”

“If they're okay?” Suggested Adam.

“ Yeah,” said Reese.

“Well then we better hurry!” Said another voice. “ We don't know what happened in there!”

Reese looked and saw it was Oliver, a slightly older student at the university. Adam agreed, “He's right, let’s go!”

The three neighbors then opened the door to the Spaniels’ home, and were immediately greeted by the devastation which Bridget found. Shattered glass, broken items, and bullet holes everywhere. And through it all, they saw Bridget, crying next to two people on the ground. The trio were quick to realize that a shooting had happened inside the house, and the two people on the ground were the victims.

Bridget's parents.

Shot to death.
