Day 9: Lava Lamp

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Jin Zixuan and Wen Ning came from very different lives, but fate somehow found them. The estranged circumstances of their families pushed them to find new lives. In their lives, they found each other.

Today, they found themselves shopping for clothes and random items. Among those, Wen Ning found himself standing in front of a lava lamp wall. All different sorts of colors and designs bounced around in front of him. Suddenly, Jin Zixuan was at his side.

“Pick one,” he said.

“Eh? No, no, no. It’s okay. We don’t need one. I just think they’re pretty,” Wen Ning rambled, but Jin Zixuan huffed and gestured to the wall.

“I wasn’t asking. Which of these do you think is the prettiest?”

Wen Ning felt bashful. He still wasn’t used to be so spoiled. But, something about the way Jin Zixuan pushed him didn’t feel stifling. He shyly pointed at one on the third shelf up. It was a smaller lava lamp that would be perfect for sitting on a side table or a desk. The display version had blue bubbles dancing about with little designs of frogs engraved on the base and cap. Jin Zixuan nodded and grabbed one.

“Good choice,” he praised. He pecked Wen Ning on the forehead and left with a knowing smirk. Wen Ning felt warm like steam was coming out of his ears.

“Thank you, Zixuan,” he said quietly. Jin Zixuan paused and looked at him before turning away. Wen Ning could see how pink his own ears were becoming and laughed behind his hand. What a silly pair they made. “I guess we should keep going. Maybe, some lunch after this store?”

Jin Zixuan agreed.

“My treat,” he insisted. Wen Ning let out a whine as he latched onto his side. He sighed pleasantly. There would be no arguing that one he supposed.
