The Tallest Tale

Summary:

Well over a Century ago, an unknown force of beings plunged from the Stars to invade and spread across our planet. The Raptures, as they have come to be called, have since taken the surface of our world as their own, with Humanity locked underground In a grand bastion: The Ark.

Yet none of that is important.

What would that information do for a person who has woken up in the middle of nowhere, with no recollection of anything? What will they get out of it?

Or rather, what would that do when they simply don't know what they are, or who they are? All they know is they're alone.

Alone, and unknowingly carrying a vital piece many have been searching for.

Notes:

Bear in mind to all who read this: This is my first time posting a story on AO3. I’m figuring this out as I go.

If you want the stories in their rawest form, I’m on Wattpad and will continue to be writing there while working here from now on too. All of my works, old and new, good and bad, are found over there, so if you’re feeling adventurous, head on over and see if you find anything you enjoy.

Speaking of, I hope you enjoy this story, as I am uploading the entirety of what I have down now here in a short span of time.

Chapter Text

Cold

It was cold

But...what does that mean?

Never had they experienced it, yet they know what it means.

Intriguing...

...

It's dark

What does this one mean too?

The absence of light makes it...then light must be somewhere!

Oh, that's what an arm feels like?

Wait, what's an arm?

And...those are legs?

Weird...but it's something they're born with right?

Then it's time to use them

Somethings above, so it's time to push it aside and keep going upwards

Another thing? Why is there so much?

This one's kind of heavy too...

Come on...

Finally!

Oh...is that light?

—————

A head broke free from the pile of material above them, soon followed with their arms that pulled the rest of them free. They took a deep breath, something their mind told them to do, even if it felt like they didn't really have too.

They looked around at the black landscape, the light reflecting off being quite an eyesore, but that was paltry compared to the pure elation of finally seeing what they wanted.

Light

A smile grew on their face, looking around at the landscape that was...dead.

...

The smile vanished quickly after, seeing nothing but grey ground and fallen...things. They were long and brown, or at least most of them were, they must have been really majestic when they were standing.

Speaking of, it's probably best to not stay on top of this black shiny stuff, could fall out under their feet.

Still not entirely use to it, they did clumsily flail about as they tried getting off this large pile. Sometimes they would hop and land perfect while other times they would miscalculate and slip into a crack, earning a yelp as they tried crawling out from the cracks yet again.

It was getting annoying, but at least it wasn't painful.

Alas, just a little further of a jump, and they finally made it to the grey and brown ground. With a huff and a smile, they'd gotten up and stretched, getting nothing out of it but the gesture felt right after that.

Now the next question...

"...Who am I?"

Their voice, soft yet surprisingly firm, held all the confusion in the world as that thought came to mind. They had no recollection of their name, nor their surroundings or...anything major for that matter.

All they had was their eyes to help, and looking down helps to confirm a few things. First, they were a woman, if the bulge on their chest was anything to go by.

She sighed got a closer look at what she found herself in, a tight fitting yet comfortable one piece, if it were a jacket or a suit she didn't know, whatever it was it was buttoned up nicely and around her stomach, so at least it was comfortable and pretty weather protective.

Her hands were clear of anything, no gloves or rings to speak of so nothing to get lost with thankfully. Looking further down, and past her chest because she's apparently quite the looker, she had stockings reaching up and under the end of her jacket/skirt thing, and a pair of black boots with...heels?

"Well, no wonder I was having trouble." She did a few leg shakes to see how her legs felt after all the falling in that pile, and after they were fine, she turned to the place she woke up in.

It was strange how this pile of junk was here, especially worse how she woke up in it. Was this a landfill or just a pile of scrap thrown together cause there's nowhere else?

"Hm?" She noticed something though, and she approached one of the pieces at the end of the pile.

It was a sharp...arm? It was something that she would have seen on a bug, not a machine, and yet here she is seeing what was apparently an arm connected to something buried underneath the piles further.

"This is getting stranger and stranger..." She dropped the arm and looked around again, hoping to find anything as a starting point to go off of.

It was nothing but empty for miles around, wind brushing against the occasional small bushes and yellow grass that looked almost sickly and spindly. With no landmarks and nothing to orient, she looked to the sun and thought things for a second, humming as she went in the direction it was opposing, west.

She knew this, but at the same time, she had no clue how.

"Must be morning...I hope I find something soon, I don't know if I'll be getting hungry soon or not."

——

Three hours of walking and little to show for it, but at the very least she wasn't tired yet...somehow. Her feet haven't began to ache either, despite what walking in rough terrain with heeled boots should have done long ago.

It was nice nonetheless however, as the greenery was already showing again at this distance. She couldn't see the pile of scrap that she woke up in anymore, nor could she yet scrounge up any memories of who she use to be.

It's not like it was being blocked from her, she felt it somehow. It was...well, there was nothing.

Was she not even Human to begin with? That being the answer would definitely explain not only her unnatural athleticism, but the seeming inexhaustibility she has and why she could also tell she simply doesn't have memories to work with.

"Such a strange thing I am...I sincerely hope there are others who can help me with this dilemma." Not to mention her dialect. She couldn't tell where her voice came from without knowledge but it was clearly more mature than youthful.

Enough of the self reflection though, she needs a name. If there isn't a name she could recall, on the merit of there being nothing TO recall, she'll have to make her own.

Passing by a dead branch, she opted to pick it up and use it as a walking cane further on. Never hurts to have more point of interaction with the floor, especially in nature where the ground can give out under your fe—

"Wah?!" Such a thing just happened, as the ground beneath her extended foot fell out and sank into the tiny creek she was passing by.

She almost fell in herself too, but the foresight of grabbing that branch helped immensely. "Thank goodness..."

She checked out the branch after the surprise catch, only for an eyebrow to raise as she observed it. The branch was thick and clearly quite sturdy, yet after that little fall it was splintered in several places.

...

She was going to ignore the possibility that she was heavier than she looked.

She dropped the soon to be broken branch and continued on, hoping to find another just as sturdy if not more so in case of another situation like that. Though, she was certainly having a good time going through this place anyways.

She was right, those brown thing standing up were beautiful and worth the effort traveling here made it out to be. They were massive and stood proudly in the world, scraping the sky with their greens and the rustling sounds they made were heavenly.

"Such magnificence..." She smiled to the trees, enjoying the rushing waters as well to couple with the wind.

Speaking of, the water seemed to teeter off down stream, and there was a little pond there too. She came over to the pond's edge and looked down, finally getting a good glimpse of herself.

...

"My...I was right about that, I am beautiful!"

Sure enough she was, short hair colored black on the outside, while under the locks of hair framing her head the color turned a deeper blue color, her eyes were also a sparkling light blue, almost the color of Lilacs actually, with a twinkle in her eyes that never seemed to leave.

She chuckled at her reflection, a prideful smirk on her face as she stood straight. "Well, at least I know I can turn heads whenever I find others. Perhaps a young man can help me more readily if I butter him up a bit?"

Clickclick

The hairs on her neck bristled up immediately, the strange and unnatural sound firing all types of signals in her head. It was like a switch activated in her head, her entire body listening to it and preparing for whatever it was that she heard.

Her legs bent and lowered her stance, her arms hung out from her sides, her hands curled in slightly as if to grab something coming her way. She had no clue what was happening, but as she heard those clicks get closer, she decided it was best to comply with this weird change in her body and hope it kept her safe.

The sound kept getting closer, prompting her to fall back and hide behind a rock and away from the sounds direction. The small trees, as she has finally come to find the name of with her ever expanding mind, were slightly moved in the clearing ahead as whatever was making that sound was finally appearing in her sight.

'What in the world is that?!'

It was a robot, black in color like those she saw in the pile she awoke in, walking on four sharp legs that guided it through the forest. It had a ball above it's body with a red light shining within, scanning it's surroundings while something long and dangerous was stuck into it's center.

Whatever that was, it was probably a weapon that would hurt to get hit by.

The robot wasn't too big though, maybe about her size if not a little smaller, and it was much easier to see that when it finally came up to the pond and scanned the water's edge. The thing dipped an arm into the water and scrapped away at it, disturbing the surface and moving rocks from beneath the surface as it seemingly searched for something.

She kept herself still and observed, the robot scanning around itself and keeping its attitude going for seemingly no real reason. Was it looking for a mineral to dig up, or was it actively trying to find something inside the water?

Clearly, her answer wouldn't be found once that light flew over her face. She clicked her tongue as the light continued on for a second before snapping back, her sudden absence now sparking the robot to perk up and beep a few times, the weapon on it's body beginning to aim towards the rock.

She hid herself there and calmed down, not minding how there wasn't a heartbeat to hammer down in her chest as she would have assumed so. Again, she really had to be not human for a stressful scenario like this to not elicit a reaction from a heart.

The robot stepped closer and closer, it's gun aimed square at the tree and where she was hiding behind. There was no way out of this now, she would be attacked by this robot and she was unarmed, with no weapons to speak of to defend herself with.

She was soon to be found, and with no other options, she felt her fists tighten together and her body wind up like a spring. No weapon would have been bad if she was Human, but if she's not, then what could be her limit?

Only one way to find out.

The robot finally rounded the rock and spotted her, letting out a high pitched whine as it's gun aimed dead for her chest. She didn't give it a chance as her hand shot out and grabbed the gun, pushing it upwards to get it out of the way

RIP!!

...

She blinked owlishly at the gun barrel, or rather what's left of it. She was holding the end of the barrel ripped straight from it's mount, rendering it inoperable.

She looked down to the robot, which seemed just as confused as her. With the change of events, a smile came to her face, as she dropped the barrel and watched the robot back away a hair.

"Well, I suppose it's your unlucky day~."
