Work Text:
They’d known the storm was heading their way. They’d stocked up their fridge and snack cupboard in preparation for the weekend hunkered down together until they were forced to return to work on Monday.
“Hey, Sugar is Soonie upstairs?” Felix asked, watching their other two cats Doongie and Dori happily munching their breakfast in the kitchen. He glanced up, bottom lip caught between his teeth as Minho answered in the negative.
It had already started to rain and he planned on locking the kitty door so that none of the cats could go out in the storm.
“Did you check the laundry room?” Minho asked, appearing in the doorway, a mildly worried look on his handsome face. “He doesn’t usually miss breakfast…”
Before Felix could attempt to reassure his boyfriend, a noise caught their attention. The little kittie door snapped open as Soonie traipsed in, damp from the rain but seemingly fine. Both men rolled their eyes as the cat scurried under the kitchen table.
Just as Felix was about to lock the kittie door, Soonie scampered past him, heading back out into the storm. “Ugh, he’s such a dumb little thing!” Felix huffed fondly, opening the door to go after him. “Can you lock the cat flap while I grab him?”
Minho nodded but Felix didn’t hang around, he dashed out to the garden and followed the little ginger furball to the perimeter fence. When Soonie disappeared into a low shrub, Felix cursed under his breath. “Oh come on!” He grumbled, brushing thin branches and leaves aside until he spotted Soonie’s ginger butt. “Gotcha!” He yelled triumphantly, scooping the cat into his arms. Soonie mewed almost urgently as he fussed and squirmed in Felix’s arms. Just as he was about to dash inside, he heard another little sound, more of a squeak than a meow and Felix almost missed it through the sound of the rain. Then he noticed it, a little ginger fluff ball right where he’d just picked Soonie up. Not knowing what else to do, he scooped up the kitten too, noticing Soonie stopped struggling instantly as he ferried them both inside.
He placed Soonie down but kept hold of the shivering kitten. He ran over to the draw where the teacloths were kept and grabbed the top one from the pile, wrapping the mewing kitten up to keep it warm. He yelled “Sugar, c’mere.” Just as Minho appeared beside him.
“Umm, Sunshine, we seem to have a li-“ his sentence trailed off as he glanced down to Felix’s arms. “Oh, make that two little visitors.” He held out a tiny grey kitten, also wrapped in a teacloth.
“Soonie was trying to bring them to safety…” Felix cooed. “Should we keep them inside? At least until the storm has passed?”
Minho nodded. I’ll keep an eye on the cameras too, if mama cat turns up, we’ll bring her in too.”
Felix nodded as he pulled out his phone to check how he could age the kittens. It only took a few clicks to discover they were likely around 10-12 weeks old. “Okay they need special kitten food and milk!” He said, “I’ll run to the store-“
“Nu-uh!” Minho insisted, handing him the grey kitten. “You keep them wrapped up warm and put them somewhere away from our cats for the time being. I’ll go and grab supplies.”
Felix’s heart glowed. “Are you sure?”
Nodding, Minho jogged to the door. “And take a shower, babe, you’re soaked and freezing too!”

By the time Minho got home, Felix had already grown attached to the two little bundles snuggled together on his bed.
The two men fed the kittens and took them into the spare room with all the relevant supplies.
“What happens if their mama doesn’t come back for them?” Felix asked as they closed the door to the spare room.
Minho shrugged but the expression on his face told his boyfriend that he’d already landed on the answer.
“Can we afford two more cats?” The blonde asked.
A small smile curled the corners of Minho’s lips. “We can make it work.” He replied. “Besides I think they’re past the age of needing their mother’s milk now so I’m not sure she’d have any reason to come back for them.”
Felix couldn’t help but get excited by the thought of adding to their little family. “We can keep them?” He asked, just to be sure as they headed downstairs.
“I mean we should probably do the math before we decide for sure, but yeah.” Minho answered, sprawling out on the sofa and lifting an arm in invitation for Felix to join him.
They’d barely been sat down for a full minute when the older three cats sauntered in from the kitchen. They each found their favourite spot; Soonie in the window sill, Doongie on the cat tree and Dori in Minho’s lap.
The storm was in full force now, luckily Minho had arrived home before the hail & thunder had started. “Thank goodness Soonie found the kittens when he did.” Felix stated, suppressing a shiver, not sure how long they’d have survived if they’d still been out there now.
“Yeah, he’s a good boy!” Minho’s his gaze drifted across the room landing on the shelves next to the TV. “Hey, do our two new arrivals remind you of anything?” He asked, tilting his head to one side.
Felix followed his gaze and grinned widely. “The stuffies we won for each other on our first date!”
Minho chuckled. “Feels like fate that they ended up in our garden doesn’t it?”
Pecking his lover on the cheek, Felix nodded. “Guess it’s obvious what we should call them then, huh?”
Still giggling Minho cuddled Felix closer. “Welcome to the family Shortcake and Solar.”
They’d named their plushies based on the pet names they’d given each other really early in their relationship. It felt even more special now they’d been assigned to actual kittens.
