Nurse’s Office
11:11 pm
Sokka is sitting on one of those weird plastic beds, being generally miserable. He can't believe he missed Jet getting attacked. Life is so unfair. At least Suki was kind enough to record some of it.
He's jerked out of his self-pitying thoughts when a boy walks through the door. The first thing he notices is the bruised knuckles the nurse tuts over. And then his eyes drift up, and he instantly freezes. Because this guy is beautiful. He has longish, messy black hair that covers his bowed head. There's a massive scar along the left side of his face, and Sokka can already imagine all the cool ways he might have gotten it. Maybe he fought an evil dragon. The boy's eyes flit towards Sokka, and his mouth presses in a thin line when he sees him watching. It presses harder when the Nurse gives him an ice pack and motions for him to sit next to Sokka.
He realizes, suddenly, that this is the guy who attacked Jet.
“Dude, you beat up Jet,” he blurts out. The boy blinks.
“Was that his name?” he says casually, not meeting Sokka's eyes. Which does not help with the cool bad boy look that's making Sokka’s intestines do flips. The boy reaches up to absentmindedly wipe blood from his nose.
“Don’t worry, he's too stubborn to report it and actually get you in trouble,” Sokka says. “He's, like, a total jerk.”
The boy finally meets his eyes. They're such a shockingly light brown, they almost look gold.
“Yeah?”
“And Principal Kyoshi hates him anyway.”
“That doesn't seem professional.” But his fingers have unclenched around the ice pack he's holding.
“Well, it’s public school. Last year some kid threw a chair at a teacher.” It was Toph, but he doesn't want this guy to know he has crazy friends. “Were you worried?”
“Kind of. I didn't want to think I attacked some innocent person,” the boy admits. He jolts when Sokka laughs, his eyes widening. Or, well, eye singular.
“Jet dated my sister last year,” he explains. “He was a total prick, and then had the nerve to dump her.”
The boy nods slowly, and is silent for a few seconds. Then, “Do you know Mai?”
“The goth girl with the knives? She's in history with me.”
The boy nods again. He's like a really cute bobblehead. “He wouldn't leave her alone even though she already rejected him, and I, um, I snapped a little? I know it wasn't good but he kept saying all this stuff about her-”
“Dude, don't worry,” Sokka knocks his knee into the guy's. He freezes. “I, um, I mean I'm sure there are worse things you could do. Like. Killing someone.”
Now the boy is staring at him with some sort of indiscernible expression. “Why are you here?” he says suddenly. “At- In the nurse’s?”
Sokka groans. “You're not allowed to make fun of me, okay?” He waits for him to nod. “I tripped on the stairs. Then got up, made it another few steps, and tripped again. Three times. And with people behind me.”
“Well, everyone's tripped going down the stairs, that's not awful.”
“...I was going up.”
The boy covers his mouth, hopefully amused instead of disgusted.
“I'm gonna tell people it was a shark attack,” Sokka declares.
“Sharks in a school?”
“Yeah, they were transported here. Like Sharknado.”
He looks perplexed. Sokka is about to dive into a tangent about how he can't believe he's never watched Sharknado, but the moment is swiftly broken when the nurse comes back and basically kicks Sokka out.
At the door he turns around to stare at the boy.
“I’ll see you around! Try not to beat up too many other people,” he calls out. The guy’s lips twitch just slightly like he's maybe smiling and his eyes crinkle at the corners, and Sokka's an idiot so he blurts out, “I like your eyes. Uh. Bye.”
And immediately sprints away.
