Rainbow tresses lay fanned out as she reclined on the plush headrest. Violet, indigo, and blue cascaded down the headrest to reach her slender shoulders. Green and yellow locks framed her youthful features, concealing slightly the shade of pink that bloomed on tan cheeks and traveled to her ears. Orange and red bangs covered the girl’s forehead, pushed back just enough to let her magenta eyes peer down her frame as she laid back on the cushioned tabletop. A baby blue camisole top hung loose and comfortable, covering the young woman’s figure, but leaving her fit arms free of any restrictions. Nothing at all enveloped the rainbow haired girl’s legs. Long for a girl her age, and dangling from her knees down off the table’s edge, but not done growing yet. Not that she wore much beyond shorts when given the choice, especially at home, over that part of her body tight and toned from the athletics she so frequently ran in.
Beyond the small undershirt, Dash was nearly naked as she laid back and listened to the quiet tones her mother hummed as she stood over her at the end of the plush tabletop. The blush on her cheeks deepened little by little as she silently considered her situation. It was a flustering state of affairs for the young woman to be sure; sprawled out nearly in the nude in front of her mother well past her girlhood years.
But it was a position that Dash had asked to be in.
Despite being someone that her friends looked up to as being ‘put together’, being a star member of any sports team she was on, and generally considered the model of what a growing girl her age ought to be like, something far less mature gnawed quietly at Dash for years. She couldn’t explain it. Not even to herself. And she had truly tried to do so many times. For some reason, even as much as she was happy with the person she was becoming, part of her yearned for things she dared not say outloud. But she knew well in the quiet parts of herself how tickled she was when walking past certain aisles at the store the supplies that were stocked there. How much she silently pined for a bottle of her own when she saw an infant suckling on one in the family or out and about. How much her senses fixed on diapers. Their sounds, the faint smell they gave off, and their looks, especially the ones adorned with vibrant patterns.
Years and years passed before Dash could hold herself back no longer. When she quit letting her mind simply imagine what it might feel like to have those items of infantile care again and instead bought some for herself, eager to wear them in privacy away from anyone’s eyes. From any questions or judgement. Of course, her mother always did have the worst timing and at times forgot to knock despite the teen’s growing insistence of the act as a procedure to enter her bedroom. Being walked in on as she was standing up and struggling with diaper tabs she didn’t know how to properly secure had to top some list of most awkward moments with one’s parents somewhere, the girl was certain.
Dash thought then that she’d surely die of humiliation right there and then. That her mother’s face would take on a thinly disgusted mask while turning away as fast as she could. Or both. But that wasn’t what happened at all. Tears of shame gathered in the teen’s eyes then and she recalled covering her face in her hands, wishing she could disappear from the face of the earth as she searched for something to say. But before the first drop of dew could form or run down her face, Dash’s mother had shut the door, closed the gap between them, reached down to finish the taping up job Dash had clumsily started without a word, and pulled her daughter into her arms.
What words exactly passed between Dash and her mother weren’t ones the teen was able to fully recall as she sat atop her bed with her covers hiding the plastic backed infantwear. She had never been sure how to reason her desires to herself. How could she explain them to another? More so to her mother of all people? But she’d never forget her mother taking a seat beside her, nodding her head attentively, asking questions, and patiently waiting through long pauses as Dash grappled for her responses. The conversation was an anxious and heart thumping blur in the girl’s memory, but the beaming smile on her mother’s face at the end and the warm enthusiastic words she sounded off took easy root in Dash’s heart, a slight bashful smile growing the instant that love sown seed was planted.
"If my little girl wants to go back to diapers, then mama will be here!"
That was only days ago and already Dash found out how sincere her mother’s energetic declaration had been when she arrived home, the start of a two week break of school beginning after only a half day of classes, to the sight of a diaper changing table having been added as a new fixture in her room.
Dash was at a loss of words, but none were needed as her mother followed the girl to her room and began helping her set things aside, undress, and take a place atop the cushy tabletop.
Butterflies fluttered in the young woman’s chest so great it seemed as though her hands could feel them truly there as they laid to rest over her toned tummy. A tumult of emotions tumbled about all at once in the young girl’s heart and in her thoughts, her feet unable to be still, wiggling about as they hung dangling from the edge of the table despite Dash’s best efforts against doing so.
Pleasant smiles never seemed to be absent from the face of Dash’s mother. Warmth in Windy’s countenance was as reliable as the rising of the sun and often competed with it for how pleasant it could make the day, her long shining red hair and its streaks of blonde a contender for drawing one’s eye as much as any ray of sunshine might. A mild spring day to anyone that met her. As the woman stepped back from tossing the pair of panties she had just eased off her sprawled out daughter her ever summery expression curled even more than usual.
“Aww. Are you nervous, sweetheart?” Dimples narrowed the woman’s amber eyes.
The question called for Dash's hips to join her feet in fidgeting, a shy smile formed on her face. “A little…” The teen quietly replied, doing her best to keep her eyes on her mother rather than looking away.
“It has been a bit since then, but mommy was the one who changed your diapers most often back when you first wore them.” Windy tapped a finger to her chin at the memory. “And it’s not like I haven’t seen you nakey plenty of times since then. I gave you baths well past the age your friends probably stopped having their mommy beside the tub and was with you for all the clothes and everything else you needed as you got bigger. I’m not seeing anything or doing anything new, Rainbow Cake”
“Mooom…” Dash whined, that groan that every teenager seemed to know when their parents said something to remind them of their earlier years; her bashful smile growing and cheek dimples rising from rays of her mother’s warmth.
“It’s true, my love.” Windy nodded. “It’s going to be just fine, Dashy. Mommy’s here.” Windy patted the pastel pink nylon bag that hung from her middle aged shoulder. A satchel that had taken on a rounded shape with all it was filled with. “And I’ve got everything ready for you, my little one.”
Thumps of her heart could still be felt knocking against her chest, but they were slower, more of eager anticipation than dreadful anxiety. Waves of worry had quelled, but her toes still curled and wiggled as she waited. The embarrassment of the situation, of being a teen atop a changing table, was still there of course, even if pleasant.
“Ok…Mommy.” A glowing pink filled Dash’s cheeks, her shy smile tugged upwards.
Hearing that title, so long since unspoken, drew out a blissful sigh out of Windy as the beaming woman set the diaper bag down at the edge of the table and dug through it, pulling out a collection of objects that suggested her child was still of those tender early years and not in fact well into her teens. All the while the shimmer of her smile radiated balmy and bright.
Dash bent upwards slightly to see. Baby oil, baby powder, and of course, the most eye-catching item of all; a plastic backed disposable diaper, folded into a tight squarish shape, decorated by prints of a golden sun shining beside puffy clouds and a vibrant rainbow across the landing strip. Shyly, the girl curled into herself a bit, entranced as she watched and listened to her mother work open the diaper.
“Ok, sweetheart. Help mommy with this part. Lift your bottom up just a bit for me.” A melodic tone carried the request, calling the girl from her daze as Windy gathered her ankles together. “You’re a little bigger than the last time Mommy did this.”
Doing as she was told, Dash arced her back and moved as her mother’s guidance directed, her lower half rising just off the padded surface, pulled in knees easing back towards her. Dash tilted her head to observe her mom at work as the woman guided the open diaper in place to rest under her upturned backside, the rustles that sounded off so loud to her ear that it seemed like everyone in the world could hear them.
What if they could? Diapers were so noisy! Dash didn’t realize how much so until then and her heartbeat quickened with the realization. Could the crinkles of that plastic backing be so loud that they blasted through the walls of her room, of her home? Surely everyone in town, in the whole world even, knew by now what was happening in her room. That the captain of seemingly every girl’s sport in the school was being hauled up like a baby, making it easier even with her own efforts, getting diapered!
“Hmmmmm.” Soft notes pulled Dash from her spiral of woe. The sound of her mother humming as she saw to her task with a smile that the teen could feel even if her upturned frame made it hard to see.
“Eep!” Magenta eyes went wide as Dash felt her mother’s touch against her bottom, but the woman’s gentle touch and soothing melody as she rubbed in the baby oil saw the girl’s eyes shrink right back again. In fact, her vision narrowed somewhat. Any part of the teen that questioned if what was happening was truly ok was soothed to rest by her mother’s loving tone and innocent caress. Anxious feelings tucked in under a blanket of warmth that seemed to fill the whole room, maybe even the whole world. Quiet giggles rising from the girl to announce that joyful sunrise as she was tended to in such an infantile way.
“Aww. My baby girl always was a bit ticklish.” Windy held the girl’s ankles with a light grip as she reached for the bottle of baby powder. “Here comes the snowstorm, my sweet Rainbow Cake. It’s ok to be my giggly baby, but try not to be too wiggly.” The woman laughed, before resuming her comforting hums as she kept at diapering her daughter.
Worries seemed to crowd Dash’s head before, but they had all gone to bed. No one else could hear the sounds coming from her room. Puffs of air barely audible to even the teenager’s ear as her mother’s slender hand squeezed the little plastic bottle and forced on bursts of lavender smelling sprinkles. The subtle rise and fall of the cushioned tabletop as the teen felt the weight of her frame adjusted this way and that, as if she were still just a little girl. Her mother’s soothing hums occasionally interrupted by happy sighs as she demonstrated that, even though it had been sometime now, the woman hadn’t forgotten how to powder Dash’s bottom. Along with the teen’s own laughter lured out by the wispy dusting of that blissful scented snow.
No. Not a single person outside that room could hear. Only Dash and her mother whose love and acceptance warmed like the clouds parting wide after a gloomy day. Windy’s affection drying up the teen’s fears, worries, and any lingering dread at having been caught in the act of her secret those days ago.
It was a world for just the two of them. Just Dash and her mommy.
Dash’s interlocked her hands lay loose and relaxed over her tummy and the thin undershirt covering her navel, as she felt herself lowered onto the cottony layer waiting to wrap up her now plentifully powdered backside. Her vision narrowed, the girl’s magenta eyes partly hidden like two gemstones not quite fully buried away in the earth. Comforting smells wafted to her nose as her mother flicked out more bursts from the little bottle to powder the girl’s modesty. Once more, Dash felt her feet dangling off the front of the table while her mother tended to her.
“Let’s get my baby girl all taped up. Doesn’t that sound nice?” Windy spoke softly as she took up the front of the open diaper from where it rested.
“Mhmm…” Dash meekly responded, her whole body at ease and more than content to give herself over to her mother’s care. Rustly noises reached her ears as her mother finished the process. The girl watched with interest as her mother pulled one side of the diaper taut to cover her well, the hushed opening of the tape sounding off before it was pressed down lightly against Dash’s now covered hip. Her tranquil gaze moved watching her mother’s hands, to the woman’s face and contented smile as she worked.
It was really happening. She was almost done getting diapered.
“Just a bit more, Rainbow Cake.” Windy announced, unaware of her daughter’s look as she finished her task. One hand taking the still unsecured side of the diaper, stretching it just right, tucking it in under the wing that was gripped in her other hand, pulling open the adhesive tab on the big disposable, and pressing it down gently. “There. All done and all better. Mommy’s little girl all swaddled again.”

A colorful rainbow decorated the landing strip greeted the girl’s gaze, the arc of color matching her own vibrant locks that were pulled off the table as she sat up, her hand taken in her mother’s own. Crinkling noises sounded off with her movements and Dash couldn’t help but giggle as she heard them. Once she was pulled to sit upright, the teen leaned forward and threw her arms around her mother, hugging her tight.
“Thank you…” Dash could feel her heartbeat quicken as she reached for a word her voice had stored away so long ago, pressing the side of her face into her mother’s chest. “Mommy.” She sighed deep. “Thank you for accepting this.”
Windy returned the embrace, rubbing her daughter’s back as she did. “Of course, sweetheart. Whether you’re out there running at the head of the field or wanting to be a little girl swaddled in her diapers again for a while. No matter what, Mommy and Daddy love you with all of our hearts.”
Days ago dark clouds gathered inwardly as Dash struggled to diaper herself, a hushed sense of self disdain knowing how odd such a thing was at her age. Those bleak rushed in to cloud her heart in a ceiling of gloomy gray when her mother had walked in and found her and the sloppy job she was in progress of. A flashflood storm of tears came on, threatening to sweep the teen up in that torrent.
But her mother held Dash fast from the sweep.
Her mother’s words as they talked gently blew that gale away.
Her mother’s warm touch as she diapered her girl banished that anxious tempest.
Her mother’s beaming embrace then warmed the diapered teen all the way through.
Dash had no words and none were needed. Just a sigh of sweet relief exhaling as she leaned into the tight hug, comforted by both the embrace of her mother and of the plastic backed padding that enveloped her waist. Her cheeks were flush with flowering pink color, hearing a crinkle from her hips as she shifted slightly. She’d still be hard pressed to explain why she felt so happy then if asked, why such a sporty and tough girl was so giddy to be diapered up like a toddler again, but it didn’t matter as she leaned into the hug.
A rainbow shining bright under the comfort of the sun.
