Chapter Text
2Na (s) + Cl₂ (g) ⟶ 2NaCl (s)
Sodium grew up with the fact that she should never interact with water molecules.
She was told that by her alkali metal friends.
Lithium said Oxidane was like a threat to her.
Potassium once bonded with Oxidane and it was very explosive... you can say that.
Rubidium went to the beach with Strontium and accidentally touched the waves. A part of her violently exploded. She went to the hospital after that.
Cesium knew she was too reactive to Oxidane.
Francium already decayed before she could speak. She went from ²²³Fr ⟶ ²¹⁹At due to alpha decay. That was probably the quickest 22 minutes ever.
Currently, the alkali metals are gathered around a table at a restaurant for dinner.
Out of curiosity, Sodium asks, "Is there a way to bond with water molecules without violence and explosion?" The question hangs in the air.
After a while, Potassium responds, "There could be. Maybe it could involve another element?"
The others agree. Sodium wonders, "Whom?"
Cesium shrugs, "I'm assuming a non-metal. Presumably a halogen."
From another table, Fluorine perks up as soon as she hears "Halogen." She eavesdrops on their conversation.
"I mean, alkali metals have 1 valence electron and halogens have 7, so if the alkali metal gives her electron to the halogen, both will be stable. And that also means they'll form a salt, since salts are formed from ionic bonds and a mixture of cations and anions."
Sodium gets confused. "Uh what does this have to do with reacting with water?" Potassium shushes Sodium. "Let her explain."
Cesium clears her throat and continues,
"These salts will usually be soluble in water. Since the alkali metal is stable and a cation, she won't react with the water. Instead, she'll depart from her halogen or negative anion, and dissolve in water. The O in H₂O will pull her away because it's attracted to her positive charge."
The others gasp.
Rubidium slaps Cesium. "Cesium! Why didn't you tell us earlier?"
"I didn't want y'all bonding with everybody and giving away the singular valence electron immediately! That's why I kept it as a secret. I waited until the right time." Cesium sighs and puts a palm where she got slapped.
Potassium says, "She's right. Some of us can be wild. Especially her." She glares at Lithium.
Lithium clutches her chest. "It's not my fault I'm the highest on the reactivity series!"
The alkali metal girls giggle. Fluorine smiles.
The drive back home is full of silence.
(They have their own individual houses but they share a different house to meet up together)
Sodium watches out the window, admiring the city lights contrasting with the dark evening sky.
Suddenly she recieves a text from Chlorine.
"Hii Sodium can you come over?? I grilled some food and the pool is set up!!"
Sodium texts her back "I'm with my friends right now but once I get back home I'll come over"
"Ooh okay that sounds good!!"
Once they get home, Sodium goes into her room to pick out her butter yellow bikini. She goes to the bathroom to shower.
(No, alkali metals don't use water to shower, obviously. They use a cleaning solution like NaOH)
After showering and getting dressed, Sodium gets her bag of personal items. Rubidium sees her and asks "Sodium, where are you going?"
"Chlorine's house."
"Oh okay have fun there! Bye Sodi!"
"Bye Rubi!"
Sodium gets in her car and drives to Chlorine's house.
